This enchanting collection of Hollywood movie partners captures all the classic moods of love: romance and intrigue, passion and infidelity, adoration and fiery obsession. From rugged heartthrobs and femmes fatales, to illustrious liaisons and unrequited love - the path of love never runs smooth, but the journey itself spurs each of us on.
Of all the famous screen pairing to put on the cover, Hulton Getty chose David Niven’s embrace of Barbara Stanwyck in The Other Love, an overlooked movie most people haven’t even seen. I think the cover design was a great choice, for two reasons. One, in choosing a less-than-famous screen pairing, Getty is setting the tone for the rest of the book. Sure, Gone With the Wind and Casablanca are included, but most of the book contains onscreen couples from less famous, and some obscure movies. Buster Keaton is not normally thought of as a romantic figure, but he’s included alongside the more idyllic Cary Grant and Rock Hudson. Alongside each photograph is a quote about love and a trivia about the corresponding movie. Next to Buster Keaton’s picture from Sidewalks of New York, the quote is, “Women like silent men. They think they’re listening,” from Marcel Archard. An unknown fact about High Noon? Gary Cooper’s pained, conflicted expressions owed their origin to his constant pain from ulcers and an injured hip. Poor guy, but he did win an Oscar for the role.
For those who love old movies and old movie romances as much as I do, this pocketbook is a must. Oh, and the second reason the cover is perfect? Because David Niven is a total stud. Enough said.
Another book that was given to me years ago that I look to reread/look at. A great book if your into old Hollywood stars and want some interesting facts/quotes of classic movies!
Can't really say that I have seen a lot of these films although I can say at least say I know more than a handful of the Hollywood starlets that appeared in the photographs, which is something.
Perfect Pairs is a collection of black-and-white screen photographs of classic Hollywood when the passion and emotions on the screen felt more alive than they do now. As a result each spread has a quote about love while since I am an aficionado of the films I can't vouch as to whether the quote actually matches up with the movie or was randomly thrown in to the page. Underneath the quote is the name of the movie being depicted, the year it was made, the lead couple and a film fact for those who would like to know more whether it is about it.
Having a book like this makes me want to make a bucketlist goal of seeing all of these movies instead of the horrid collection that IMDB has for their top films.
Cute, short book with some amazing pictures and quotes. I got a few good movie recommendations from this collection, and I think this would make an amazing gift!
My favorite quotes:

“Happiness is perfume; you can’t pour it on somebody else without getting a few drops on yourself.” - James Van De Zee (Madame Butterfly - 1932)
“You are my lover and I am your mistress and kingdoms and empires and governments have tottered and succumbed before now to that mighty combination.” - Violet Trefuls (Salome -1953)
“On the last analysis then, love is life. Love never faileth, and life never faileth so long as there is love.” - Henry Drummond (Grand Hotel - 1932)
