Rate this book
The excavator goes, "chumma chumma hufft hufft FALUMP." The steamroller goes, "CHUG chug CHUG chug moooooosh." The wrecking ball goes, "BOOOOOM!" Come on down to the construction site and make some noise with eight exciting construction vehicles as they rumble, crunch, chug, and boom their way through this lively book! The oversized format lends itself to the shape of the vehicles and the boisterous text begs to be read aloud.

High rating for a book of onomatopoeias, but Steve Light’s illustrations are just lovely

Another title in Light's board book series on transportation vehicles and this time it is digging machines. However, Light does include a couple that do not dig and since they are vertical machines the illustrations for those two machines are presented vertically on the two page spread, which is a nice touch and what gets the book a four star rating.

An extra-wide board book about large construction vehicles. Each double page spread shows the vehicles working with their noisy sounds printed in big text. Also the pages for the extra tall vehicles are displayed vertically. An entertaining board book for toddlers who enjoy construction or vehicle books.

Oh the sound effects! Perfect for babies who are interested in sounds but have yet to grasp meanings. I'm sure this will be a hit with older babies and toddlers as well, or for any adult who likes to be silly and make a lot of noise!

Some of this onomatopoeia is hard to say aloud, it took a few goes to feel I had a handle on it. But there is fun in the silliness here. The illustrations and text are great and the wide format board book is also a joy.

You like this big book! We picked it up from a Free Little Library and you read it in the stroller while we walked home. There are a lot of big construction machines and fun sounds. Like the word “boom” with lots of “o”s.

This board book presents different construction vehicles accompanied by onomatopoeia.

The illustrations were done in watercolor, depicting stylized construction equipment loosely drawn against negative space. This book features two portrait layout illustrations.

(The onomatopoeias are not as straightforward as Light's "Boats Go" which makes this read not as successful. Nevertheless Clive enjoys it.)

Eight different construction vehicles all make different noises, which are recreated in the text of this book. It is simple, but children will love mimicking the noises along with you!

I also enjoyed airplanes go. The wide format of this book, and the vertical orientation for the forklift and wrecking ball are a feast for the eyes. And the onomatopoeia is fun, too.

Richie's Picks: DIGGERS GO (board book) by Steve Light, Chronicle, July 2013, 16p., ISBN: 978-1-4521-1864-2

"Dig it. Dig it. Dig it. Dig it."
-- The Beatles (1969)

Okay. So what would YOU be figuring if you came upon a grown man sitting by himself, loudly going,

"THE FRONT LOADER GOES SKWEE BRRUMM BRUMM SKOOOOOO SKOOOOO"

Yup. Either he's a few sandwiches short of a picnic OR he's just gotten hold of the new Steve Light book DIGGERS GO, and he's trying out all the new machines.

"THE EXCAVATOR GOES CHUMMA CHUMMA CHUMMA HUFFT HUFFT FALUMP"

There's just something about being human that makes us want to be digging and building from a young age. Just the other day, I was recounting the story I'd often been told as a child about how I'd been a toddler sitting in a highchair in front of a big picture window at my grandparents, transfixed, watching a bunch of large machines build a park on open land just beyond their backyard. And you know that I couldn't wait to get out of that highchair and go dig holes and build castles. And, nope, I never did grow out it.

"THE BULLDOZER GOES RRUUMBLE RRRUMBLE SCRUNCH SCRUNCH SCRUUMBLE SCRUUMBLE SCRUUUNCHH"

DIGGERS GO opens to spreads that are 6 inches high and 24 inches long, so there is plenty of room for BIG machines and BIG text on each spread.

There are some excellent machine books out there for preschoolers, and this one will provide a great springboard to the McMullan books, the Rinker/Lichtenheld books and all the dramatic play that these books foster.

Okay. Off to my sandbox I go.

BRRUMM!

This board book contains the pictures of eight construction vehicles and the sounds each makes as it is used on a construction site—or in your house! The eight vehicles are the excavator goes . . . HUFFT-FALLUMP; forklift goes . . . WHIRRRFFFTT-BONK; jackhammer goes . . . KKAKKA-AKK; dump truck goes . . . PA-LUMP ; front loader goes . . . BRRUMM-SKOOOOOO; steamroller goes . . . CHUG-CHUG; bulldozer goes . . . RRRUMBLE-SCRUUMBLE; and the wrecking ball goes . . . BOOOOOOOOOM!

Diggers Go is a thick board book of an unusual size. It is longer than most books to accommodate the size of these construction vehicles. Little boys will go crazy for this book. When my nephew was three, he would have loved Diggers Go. Like other kids his age, and younger, he was car and truck crazy. Girls might also love this book, but it is really for boys.

When open, Diggers Go is two feet—2 FEET!—of colorful, noisy construction vehicles, busy doing their jobs. A mini-front loader is on the cover and a mini-excavator on the back. In between are those plus six more LARGE vehicles that young boys will really love reading and playing with. Diggers Go will ignite their imaginations and a love of reading.

The pages are thick to withstand major construction. These tough-working, construction-site vehicles are on stand-by, waiting for the right little boy to help them bust, break, and build anything they can imagine. Along with Diggers Go, Trucks Go, and Trains Go are available for your transportation-loving child.

Anyone interested in what goes on at a construction site will enjoy this sound-filled board book, but it is intended for young readers. The watercolor illustrations provide a perfect backdrop for the noises made by an excavator, a forklift, a jackhammer, a dump truck, a front loader, a steamroller, a bulldozer, and finally, bringing everything down--a wrecking ball. Young readers may enjoy having the chance to turn the book horizontally and vertically in order to appreciate all the destruction.

The large size of this board book matches the large size of the topic, construction vehicles and it is full of SOUNDS that dominate each page and beg to be sounded out, again and again and again. The images are not defined by outlines but rather blur a bit, just the way you would describe working machines that do not rest (unless they go Goodnight). The shape of this dynamic book even changes with the size of the vehicle described. This is a book that demands participation and will be enjoyed by young and old over and over again.

Falump, beep, and grrrakka along with machines at a construction site in this energetic and noisy board book. Colorful diggers created with mixed media share the extra long pages with the rhythmic and bold all-caps text. Set off against a crisp white background, the illustrations make create use of texture and thick, glossy black lines.

This is a fun twist on the "Animals Sounds" book, instead of "Cow goes MOO" It is Fork lift goes "BEEP BEEP BEEP....whirrrffft bonk" It is done in a large board book (almost a foot long) and you have to sometimes turn the book around to get the whole effect. Boys love their dump trucks and construction equipment so this one is sure to check out a TON!

Construction sites are noisy places and the eight vehicles in this board book are no exceptions. The excavator goes, chumma chumma chumma huff huff falump and the dump truck goes beep beep beep beep screeeech and so on. Playful illustrations of the construction vehicles, vibrant text and a fun format make Diggers Go a standout.
