Ruskin Bond, India's most loved author, puts together his favourite sayings, aphorisms and quotations in this delightful little book on life and living. Drawing on his own observations and life experiences and those of his favourite authors, he presents thoughts on nature, friendship, love, family, money, enemies in short, pithy statements. This is a book you can dip into anytime, and come up with something that will make you smile or think with its wit and gentle common sense.

This is a book by Ruskin Bond about his favorite sayings, aphorisms, and quotations. Ruskin Bond is an author that has always amazed us with his wonderful creations. Each quotation in it is carefully picked from his works and will be a great addition to your collection of Ruskin Bond's books.
I reread this amazing collection of quotes which are quite comforting and inspirational at times today. I read this book for the first time last year and it went in a blur without much impact during that time. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood.
But the book returned back when I needed it the most this time around and I am so glad it gave me so much comfort during my most stressful days.
Pick up this pretty amazing book when you’re in need to calm yourself and something to comfort you.
While this is a really quick read which you can finish in under half an hour, I would suggest that it be read in short bursts with time to contemplate. Some of the quotes in the book strike home, most others feel a little too philosophical for my liking. Maybe they'll make more sense when I'm older. This is a book which encourages you to be content with the simple things in life. The author's love for nature it clearly seen in some of the quotes and sayings.
Some of my favorite quotes from the book:
Avoid long speeches. The less a man knows, the longer he takes to tell it.
Those who are overly religious are well-practised in self-deception.
‘You know, the way love can change a fellow is truly frightful to contemplate.’ —P.G. Wodehouse
‘It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do.’ —Jerome K. Jerome
‘Two things a man can never hide—that he is drunk and that he is in love.’ —Anonymous
If all the tiny nuggets of wisdom could be encapsulated into a lovely hard bound book, this would be the book. A must read, a must have for a bibliophile, a gift from my dearest author Mr Ruskin Bond.
The greatest books find you at the most random times. This was a thoughtful read, where the author decided to share the advice and sayings he lives by with us and left room on each page for us to gather thoughts and realizations. I appreciate it so much. This was also beautiful, had me giggling, and definitely thought-provoking. This stressed the importance of slowing down, enjoying the earth, sun, rain, and the privilege of having windows. Content is more important than happiness, shine in the darkness, be independent, and be available to others. Live and help live better. - QUOTES I LOVED! "Praise all countries but live in your own." "Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny." "The wisest man is he who doesn't think he is." "What if you failed yesterday? Today is not yesterday is it?" "Money often costs too much." "Bad times are good times to prepare for better times."
' read almost everything that came my way, from the plays of George Barnard Shaw to the thrillers of 'Bulldog Drummond', a forerunner of James Bond. '
' Don't pray for easy life. Pray to be a stronger person. '
' If you can smile when you feel hurt, the hurt is half cured. '
' Be true to yourself, and you will be true to others. '
' Before you get upset, ask yourself : does it really matter? '

A collection of Ruskin’s favourite quotes! Beautifully wrapped up in a visually pleasing book cover and amazing illustrations. A treat to the eyes of the reader
A Little Book of Life is one of Ruskin Bond’s most soulful and introspective works—an elegant companion volume to A Little Book of Happiness and A Little Book of Comfort.
This book distils Bond’s lifelong understanding of what it means to live fully, simply, and gently.
Through short aphorisms, reflective paragraphs, personal memories, quotations, and brief philosophical notes, Bond builds a tapestry of wisdom that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
What makes the book powerful is its humility. Bond does not preach. He shares. Like a quiet mentor or a thoughtful grandfather, he offers reflections drawn from his own experiences—growing up in India, enduring loneliness after the loss of his father, navigating young adulthood, finding purpose in writing, and eventually settling into a life of contentment in the mountains.
These experiences shape his philosophy: life is not a puzzle to solve, but a path to walk with openness and gratitude.
Bond touches on themes such as love, fear, ageing, friendship, failure, hope, and inner peace. His insights are not complex abstractions; they are grounded in everyday life. For instance, he writes about the importance of small routines—tea in the morning, reading before bed, walking in nature. He reminds readers that stability, not grandeur, forms the foundation of a meaningful life.
One of the book’s strongest elements is its emotional honesty. Bond readily admits his imperfections: moments of restlessness, laziness, stubbornness, or self-doubt. Yet he frames these not as flaws to eliminate, but as inevitable parts of being human.
This acceptance becomes a quiet reassurance for readers, encouraging self-compassion rather than self-criticism.
Nature remains a guiding presence in the book. Bond repeatedly draws lessons from the mountains: resilience from trees that withstand storms, patience from rivers that carve valleys slowly, and serenity from quiet forest paths.
These natural metaphors offer not only beauty but also grounding—reminding readers that life is cyclical, forgiving, and always moving forward.
The book’s structure—fragmented yet cohesive—allows readers to absorb wisdom slowly. Each page feels like a pause, a breath, a moment of clarity.
Rather than building an argument, Bond creates a mood of gentle reflection. It’s a book to return to repeatedly, especially during emotional fatigue.
Above all, A Little Book of Life celebrates humanity. Bond believes in kindness, grace, forgiveness, and the quiet strength within every individual.
His optimism, shaped by decades of living close to nature and people, feels like a warm lantern held out in a dark corridor.
It doesn’t deny darkness; it simply lights a path through it.
In the end, the book becomes more than a collection of thoughts—it becomes a philosophy of gentle living. It encourages readers to slow down, breathe deeply, appreciate beauty, and trust the rhythms of life.
Bond’s wisdom is not dramatic, but deeply nourishing. In a world often defined by noise and tension, A Little Book of Life offers precisely what its title promises: a small, steady guide to living with humility, gratitude, and heart.
I don't know where I was before I found this book, but it sure is helping me get out of there. This was my first time meeting Ruskin Bond's hands, and my oh my, I am more than impressed with his work. There's no doubt that this will be my last book from him, I have so much to say but little words to describe how grand they all are (you know what I mean?). Below are a few quotations that just got me unexpectedly. This also me recommending the book to you guys 😉.
- Praise all countries, but live in your own. - Believe in God.Believe people. Believe in yourself. Then go ahead! - If we fear someone, we give that person power over us. - Be gentle, but don’t allow yourself to be trod upon. - What if you failed yesterday? Today is not yesterday, is it? - ‘What you think of yourself is much more important than what others think of you.’ - We have a lot to learn from children. A good teacher will always learn something from a good pupil. - Value good friends. - Remember Coleridge’swords: ‘Friendship is an asheltering tree, in a way that seems impossible or difficult to understand because of containing two opposite facts or characteristics - ‘A great man is always willing to be little.’ - ‘Whatever you have, spend less.’ - Napoleon: ‘Never awake me when you have good news to announce, because, with good news, nothing presses; but when you have bad news, arouse me immediately, for then there is not an instant to be lost. - ‘I’ve seen more tears run down the pretty faces than the plain ones.' - A fool always tries to appear wise. The wise man is not afraid to play the clown. - Select wisely the person you must live with forever—yourself.
"Believe in yourself. Soon others will believe in you too"
‘Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.’
'Do not pray for an easy life. Pray to be a stronger person.'
'Light suppers make long lives.'
‘Never seek to tell thy love, Love that never told can be; For the gentle wind does move Silently, invisibly.'
'how shall we hoodwink them asked the young demon in the old story , tell them there is plenty of time said the old demon out of experience , they always fall for that'
'The greatest victory is the one you win over yourself'
'Grandmother defined a true gentleman thus: ‘He must be gentle as a woman, and manly as a man.'
'Almost anyone can do the first half of anything; only the people who do the second half arrive.'
'Adversity is always intermittent; and therefore, if effort is constant, you are bound to win.'
'Don’t give up. One success will erase many failures.'
'What if you failed yesterday? Today is not yesterday, is it?'
'Before you get upset, ask yourself: Does it really matter?'
Truly this book is a tremendous compilation of various quotes, thoughts and aphorisms that Ruskin Bond collected for years. The author rightly said that these quotes are for life. This book discusses life and how one supposed to live it.
❤️ People are stumbling now and then and the number of times they give up. These quotes are going to alleviate them as they’re not quotes but gems stowed in a hard-bound book. Though We have listened to many of the quotes before, they still have an immense blow and nourish hope.
❤️ This book is of course a short read but requires continuous contemplation.
Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. - Soreness Kierkegaard We all are trying to understand life. Everyone wants certain things in life. But many a times, it doesn't happen ot takes time. In situations like these, people just lose hope. They leave things mid-way. But, one should never lose hope. You must try to figure things out, even if it takes time.
A Little Book of Life by Ruskin Bond discusses life and how one is supposed to live. It is a collection of Bond's favourite quotations and sayings about life. He connects life with nature, love, people, success and failure. He explains life in a simple way. According to him, live your life the way you want too.
A small and wonderful read. It comforts you in your times of distress.
A very easy- to- read compendium of simple thoughts, aphorisms and quotes. Read with an open mind and let the thoughts sink in. Here are some of the quotes I loved from the book:
1. You will sometimes be punished when you do not deserve it. Before giving vent to your indignation, reflect on how often you deserved punishment without receiving it.
2. Life will always give us what we know we are worth. It never fails to take us at our own valuation.
3. May you have the wisdom to be simple, and the humour to be happy! (Best of the lot! So simple, yet so deep!)
4. There is no cure for birth and death save to enjoy the interval.
5. I have yet to hear of anyone dying from an overdose of reading!

I loved this series of " little books" by Ruskin Bond
Life wisdom from the very loveable author Ruskin Bond. “Let this little book be a garden in your pocket”. Keep this book at a noticeable place in your house and keep coming back to the book to read a quote here and then. This may come handy as per the author “ when you’re down in the dumps- as we all are, from time to time “

Mr. Bond has written in this book that he loves to write all the quotes in a diary that inspire him and he has written all these quotes in this beautiful book for his readers. This book has great collection of quotes , simple yet powerful.
This book is actually a collection of quotes by different persons. It's a small book, though it's not something to finish at one go. You need to contemplate over many quotes to understand their true meaning in your own way. Overall, a good book, a book to keep with you always.
A very quick, easy and most importantly profound read!
This book, by legendary author - Ruskin Bond, contains byte sized lessons for life, that the author graciously shared, drawn from his own experiences and observations.
This is reminiscent of the book of quotes that I maintained in school, thinking I'd one day get to be the lucky girl who got to stand up on a chair and write a quote of the day on the blackboard.
Pocket book - randomly open a page and you may find the quote you might need in that moment. It's a combination of Bond's fav quotes and his personal observations. Reading Ruskin Bond feels like a warm hug and a cup of Hot Chocolate.
