"They came from an alien time continuum with the sole intention of subjugating the Lensmen and ruling the entire galaxy and everything in it. But the Lensmen had no intention of letting that happen. Voted one of the two best science fiction series of all time, coming in behind only Asimov’s Foundation series.
Collected together in one binding for the very first time are all six Lensman novels and the final book of Lensman short stories for 7 complete books with over eleven hundred pages and six hundred thousand words of pulse-pounding science fiction adventure. Edward Elmer Smith (also E.E. Smith, E.E. Smith, Ph.D., E.E. “Doc” Smith, Doc Smith, “Skylark” Smith, or—to his family—Ted), was an American food engineer (specializing in doughnut and pastry mixes) and an early science fiction author, best known for the Lensman and Skylark series. He is sometimes called the father of space opera.
Tri planetary was the first example of space opera that I ever read , in fifth grade. ( Thank You Sister Mary Ellen for finding my passion and kindling a life long need to read and learn!!) It is still enjoyable and fun today as I Approach 60. Oh some of the science is known wrong today, and we've gone other directions than some of the predictions. But the stories hold JP amazingly well. for all who love or loved Star Wars especially, I deeply recommend this trip to an alternate, but near, reality and future.
A favorite of mine discovered 60 years ago. Periodically reread. Along with Burroughs a recommendation of my Dad's discovery back in the 1930s. Classic sci-fi from the space opera period. Some things are anachronistic from our point of view but representative of the evolution of fiction, science, cultural values, and story telling. If you're a literature fan a must read as a definition of early 20th century SciFi.
Some remembered revisited, some visited deleted, some new
I really enjoyed this pack, it took me back to my original readings. I feel there is still some lensman writing missing from this pack, in particular the thought directed space drive and it’s four couple relationships. I thought this was the complete series but obviously i need to research further.
The books kept jumping backwards and forwards from book to book, making it difficult to remember where I was when I stopped reading. very irritating. This an issue because I've read all the books before.
The Lensman series is "essential, crucial" reading for fans of Heinlein, Asimov, Dune, and Star Wars. You'll be warmed by the familiarity of themes and passion, in a background of cosmic scope.
A little young in some ways as style has changed since this was written, but taken for what it is an epic story of good versus evil it is excellent. Some great characters.
For classic heavy duty 1930s SF these are hard to beat. Unless you don’t like space battles where planets get tossed around… I read a bit too much into it now for it to be as fun as it was when I was a kid, but they still work for high energy action.
The technical concepts were simple enough to understand without being dumbed down. Enjoyable characters, with relatable motivations that stand the test of time.
It's good to read something I haven't read in many years, and it's still a great read. Enjoy these stories from a real master of early Science fiction!
A space opera collection that should be in every ones collection, the progression of the growth of a culture from historical times to the future of the lensmen
This is a trip back to my childhood. It is terribly dated and paternalistic in many ways, but if you can deal with that then prepare for rip roaring space opera on a grand scale. Great fun!
