W.S. Head lived in and loved the area he describes. Here is an intimate ecological description of the widespread brush country of California. Fascinating wildlife stories add to the details of the plant and animal stories.
Great book describing the plants and animals you would expect to see in the chaparral - complete with the authors drawings. Take this book with you on your next hike in SoCal, together with a notebook and start really appreciating our commonist ecosystem.
Interesting but very outdated. It's not just the Latin names that are outdated, but concepts such as fire regimes, snake bite first aid, etc. It's fun to get a historical perspective, and the author clearly loved the area very much, and was ahead of his time in several ways.
