Contention is a scientific journal which aims to offer a novel contribution to the study of social protest. The journal intends to advance knowledge about a comprehensive range of collective actions, social movements and other forms of political and social contention. Its main purposes are to offer a multidisciplinary forum to scholars from different fields and to bridge the gap between them, within and across the social sciences and humanities.Vol. 0, Issue 0, "Theory, Action, and Impact of Social Protest," comprises the proceedings of the first "Theory, Action and Impact of Social Protest" conference, an interdisciplinary event which took place over two days in October 2012 at the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK. The event included over 100 speakers from almost as many universities from all over the world, and speakers presented papers from a wide variety of academic fields including politics, sociology, psychology, philosophy, literature, law, criminology, geography, anthropology, and media studies.The journal is edited by Giovanni Travaglino (University of Kent, School of Psychology) and Eugene Nulman (University of Kent, School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research).
