Bad Boy

Rate this book
Before Melissa Bank and Helen Fielding, bestselling novelist Olivia Goldsmith was penning tales "like Jane Austen dealing blackjack" (Newsweek). The queen of the modern comedy of manners serves up her sharpest novel yet, "Bad Boy".A modern day Pygmalion with a twist. Best friends Tracie and Jonny have been meeting for coffee every Sunday for the past six years, trading stories of failed romance. Tracie has been involved with one bad boy after another -- men with a fondness for black leather and motorcycles and a distate for commitment. Jonny, on the other hand, is a nice guy and he always hears that women like him as a friend, but never "in that way". Now the tables are turned when Jonny convinces Tracie to teach him how to be a bad boy and, after his successful transformation, she falls in love with her best friend. Olivia Goldsmith, author of The First Wives Club, turns her sharp wit to the foibles of modern dating in this comic and poignant "young" novel.

Olivia Goldsmith (January 1, 1949 - January 15, 2004) was an American author, best known for her first novel The First Wives Club (1992), which was adapted into the movie The First Wives Club (1996).

She was born Randy Goldfield in Dumont, New Jersey, but changed her name to Justine Goldfield and later to Justine Rendal. She took up writing following a divorce in which she said her husband got almost everything (including her Jaguar and the country house). A graduate of New York University, she was a partner at the management consultants Booz & Company in New York prior to becoming a writer.

Many of her books can be described as revenge fantasies; a constant theme is the mistreatment of women by the men they love, but with the women coming out the winners in the end.

Controversially, in late 1996 Goldsmith said, in response to an Entertainment Weekly reporter's question, that her favorite event of 1996 was when Bob Dole fell off a stage during a campaign function.

She also wrote several books for children, which were published under the name "Justine Rendal."

Goldsmith died as a result of complications from the administration of anaesthesia before cosmetic surgery. Her final two books were published posthumously.

"I want you to train me to be the kind of guy that girls always go for. You know, the kind of guy you're always going with."

Bad Boy by Olivia Goldsmith

I loved this book.

I do not care that it has so many one and two star ratings. The book is adorable. How could anyone who even moderately likes fun and smart chick lit not love this?

John. He is a computer geek, something of a nerd, can't get a woman's interest and is not happy about it.

John's best friend is Tracy. She is a sassy and fun loving young lady whose boyfriend is a "bad boy". Cliff is a rocker with long hair and a selfish attitude. Tracy loves him. He is the latest in her disasterious dating choices. John can't understand what she sees in him.

John gets an idea..how about if Tracy does a "makeover" on him and educates him on w hat women want and how to be a "bad boy". That is all Johnny wants. To be able to walk into a bar or party without fear and get the woman of his dreams.

After initial skeptisism Tray agrees. There follows one hilarious book as Tracy literally schools John..whose name she has changed to Johnny because Johnny is a bad boy name.., in the art of everything from how to dress, how to walk, what to eat and how to break up with a woman. It makes for highly amusing and surprisingly poignant reading.

Eventually the experiment works..Johnny is a hot bad boy..and every woman seems to want him.

What Tracy did not count on however are her own feelings regarding Johnny.. maybe these feelings are not so pure..

I loved Bad boys..it was an incredibly tender, highly humerous read with vivid character depth taking place in Seattle at the height of the grunge rock scene. It was like a breath of fresh air.

Highly recommended to anyone who wants a break from ions of dark books and just wants a fun, really sweet book. I loved it.

My expectations were way too high for this book, it let me down in more ways than one. Staring with the ridiculous title, are they suppose to be any bad boys in this book? Maybe I glanced over the characters cause the book was extremely boring and trite. It is one of those books that I regret that I believed the hype surrounding it. I don't have a clue what this was about, no character made a lick of sense to me. One part it was about a strained relationship, but who were the characters? Opps I forgot the moment I flipped the page. It was laughable to see the rules of what makes a bad boy.

I read several books with similar content but this was one was pathetic.

Another book that bites the dust...

I've read this book a few times and in all honesty I'm not quite sure why. It's not the best in a literary sense but I think that sometimes you just want to read a book because it is nice more than anything. This novel allows a cynic of all things romantic to indulge in little romance and enjoy it for the nice ending and nice characters. Nice, being the operative word, not brilliant.

Lo so, lo so, chiedo troppo.

I have to say that The First Wives Club was by far her best work, and all of her other books including this one fell short.

The story is about Tracie and Jon who have been best friends since college. He’s your stereotypical nice guy nerd who has it all except love. She’s your stereotypical female who falls for the bad boys and is friends with the nice guys. In a desperate attempt to win girls over, Tracie agrees to transform and train Jon to be a bad boy. However after successfully turning him into a ruthless heartthrob, she realises that maybe bad boys aren’t all they are cracked up to be.

The premise of the story was interesting however I don’t think it was pulled off all that well. There were sections that seemed to have no point and sometimes it didn’t seem to flow properly.

I found Tracie extremely hard to like. I understood her issues causing her to be attracted to men that treated her like crap however she just really bugged me. I mostly liked Jon, however as his true self rather than his ‘bad boy’ self. The other characters in the book i liked – Tracie was the only one who I really didn’t connect with.

For most of the book I felt like the author didn’t really know what she was doing, and it really came across. Like someone who looks amazing but they have no self confidence – you see right through them. The book didn’t have a strength that only the author brings, where even if it’s the crappest book ever written it still compels you because the author wrote it with self confidence believing they knew what they were doing. I felt a lack of that, which even though the book wasn’t terribly written I keep doubting myself whether it was or not. I don’t know if anyone can relate to what i just said. Maybe I’m talking out my butt.

I really don’t want to spoil anything but the ending was the worst! I think it’s what tipped the book from being alright to completely lame. It was so cliche and corny however not even in a good way! I don’t mind a sweet, corny ending but this was just dumb. And it was so quick and weirdly written like the author didn’t know how to bring it all together.

Anyway even though it completely rubbed me up the wrong way, it was interesting enough that I kept turning the pages.

Also if you think you might relate to Tracie then you should probably read this book as it might open your eyes a bit to yourself.

Overall I wouldn’t say I disliked this book or thought it was a waste of my time, I just felt it was severely lacking – it had so much potential and could have been something great.

Another Veeta's recommendation and I looooved it!
I know it's kinda cheesy, flat and predictable for some people. But well, it's kinda story that could be happened in our daily life. And reading this novel felt like watching those Hollywood's romantic comedy movies.

Ngerasain deh perasaan sedihnya Tracie, for turning him into bad boy.
When they finally made love, berasanya simpel dan natural, malah nggak diekspos sama sekali.
Mereka nggak berhubungan sama sekali selama berbulan-bulan. Oh, aku sukaaaaaa banget. Endingnya sederhana dan maniiiiis... Love it!

After reading 'book club books', this book seemed really silly. I felt it had no substance and not much character development. It was hard to feel anything for the main character, Tracie, when even the waitress at the restaurant called her an idiot and she was dating Phil solely for his looks. And really? This smart, nice-looking guy, Jon, waited for her for seven years and commented that he even loved her earlobes? Not all that practical. At least they could have made Tracie succeed at writing or Jon fail at Micro Con but the book didn't even do that. Overall, skip the bad boy and go for a better read.

I had high hopes for this but I think it was of its time 2002 and tastes have moved on from then. So the two stars is rather mean. I might well have given it more than that if I'd read it ten years ago.
What I liked - there were moments of real comedy in this. My favourite was the climbing wall - hilarious. The section at baggage claim was funny too. But I wished there had been more to laugh at. In fact, there was much that made me rather sad. For the lack of a proper conversation too much time was wasted, but then, that was the point of the story. So not bad for whiling away a sunny afternoon but it was a bit too old fashioned for me.

Publishers Weekly
For all its hip talk and flaunting of high-tech accessories, Goldsmith's {The First Wives Club) cream-puff new read is an old-fashioned tale of love and friendship. In the new SeattleDa town suddenly stinking rich, "famous for its bad boys, good coffee, and Micro Millionaires"DTracie Higgins is a young reporter for the Seattle Times. Though she has a musician-poet-lout boyfriend, every Sunday Tracie meets platonic chum Jonathan Delano for brunch. Jonathan is a techno-wizard for
Micro/Con; he is responsible, dedicated, environmentally correct; good to his mother and stepmothers; and alas, an ugly duckling dweeb who hasn't had sex in a year.
Tracie agrees to give him a "make over" : the clothes, the mov es, the haircut, the linesDin short, attitude. "Women don't want nice guys," she says. She should know.
In fact, every man in the book (except Jon) is a selfish leech, abusive or indifferent. Every woman seems clueless. But the dialogue is crisp and funny, and though the characters a re shallow, they're lively, comradely and comic. The makeover itself is wonderfully funny, especially as poor Jon remains pretty hapless on the pickup.
Soon, however, his spiffy clothes, spiked hair, stale lines and casual cruelty turn his love life around. Has the loyal friend, the true lover, the decent, smart, stock optioned man vanished into chic-ether? Read on.

This is actually a reread. I had bought this book many years back when it was a new release. I still remember it because it was how I got sucked into one of those monthly book catalogues that were popular in the 90’s. I did read it all and remember not thinking it was great, but reluctant to move it on and admit I’d wasted so much money on a dud book (it was expensive for me back then).
Anyhow finally doing a big purge and this is one of many on the reread and move on pile.
I’ll admit nostalgia value kept me reading half way through. This is a very 90’s chick lit with the protagonist, Tracie, giving her nerdy best friend Jon a bad boy make over so he can attract women. Tracie herself is involved with Phil, a cliched assh%%e wannabe rock star. I think anyone with half a brain can figure out where this one was going and amused nostalgia hit boredom by halfway for me.
This one’s off to a new home.

This one took me a long time to finish, but I am not a quitter. It seemed like it had some foresight, but I was irritated by the shallowness of the characters. This is a Cinderfella story where Tracie agrees to coach her guy friend into being an ass and catching women, of course it works. I hope it would not work in real life. I did not like Tracie, she played both her boyfriend and her friend, in addition to of course having the luxury of walking off of her job and living on her trust fund. I do wonder if there are whole careers for people out there on persona coaching or helping people become more confident, but this one seemed more focused on lying and shoes.

This wasn't the best book that I've read by Olivia Goldsmith. I found that half way through the book that I began to get annoyed with the treatment of women by the male character and how the main female character molded her man friend from a nice, nerdy guy to, basically, an asshole so that he could get women to like him. It pissed me off. Then to top it all off everything is fine in the end.
Maybe I wasn't in the mood for this type of book or the subject matter was off putting, I'm not sure but I don't really think you need to put a lot of effort into reading it.

How i met your mother?"

Tried finishing the book, but just couldn’t. Got about halfway through and the main character made me so mad. Women don’t always want bad boys who can’t pay rent or make a commitment. I’m sure in the end, the two ended up together, but I wouldn’t know. Couldn’t bring myself to finish.
