Never Coming Back

Rate this book
Jessica is a successful lesbian romance novelist who hasn't dated in over a decade, and hasn't written a new novel in years. Her inability to move on with her life after her wife's death forces her literary agent and her best friend to convince her to date again - for her own well-being, and to break her writer's block. Venturing out into an unfamiliar dating scene, Jessica meets three intriguing women. Kate, the young clerk at a local coffee shop, is infatuated with her and seems willing to do just about anything for Jessica's approval. Jo is a professional photographer specializing in nature scenes, but her brooding demeanor is better suited to her less-public photography projects: capturing intimate moments between couples. Adrian appears to be a stereotypical motorcycle rider: tattoos, attitude and all, but Jessica discovers there is much more going on beneath the surface. Complicating her life further is the attention Jessica receives from an unknown admirer - flattering, until admiration turns into obsession. With the help of her friends, old and new, Jessica must deal with her personal demons while trying to identify her resourceful and persistent stalker before someone gets hurt or killed.

I don't like writing negative things about books, even when I don't like them. The writing isn't that bad, but the dialogue sounds the same for every character and the plot just doesn't ring true. Instead of coming across as wanting to date again after four years of mourning her partner, the main character (Jessica) just seems indecisive and pretty much willing to go out with anyone who crosses her path (even the stalker who TYPES ALL IN UPPER CASE and does very creepy things). This isn't a romance so much as a score card. It was all I could do to finish the book so I could move on to a better read.

Great premise but I didn't care for the execution. Jessica was a frustrating and unlikeable protagonist for me. The stalker aspect could have been thriller material if taken at all seriously; each escalation seemed to be met with either a 'meh' or 'I won't address this' response.
