Whew! I just finished NIGHTFALL. What a rocket ride through assloads of backstory, but somehow, all action! It's fluffy in a way--Gresh doesn't pause to do any buildup, she just lays that backstory out
and everyone acts on it with extreme prejudice, right *now.* Pay attention! Here comes another wowser action scene! But that's a wonderful thing in its way. Reminds me of how Ysabeau Wilce does pulpy adventure stories. But more Jungian ; ) Also, like Diana Wynne Jones, who never bothered with laying groundwork. Also, a sparkly vampire.

The sex is a big tease, not because it's not satisfying, but because I keep thinking there's gonna be another book with these characters. By the time we're done I'm thinking we'll have at *least* the vampire, the voodoo priestess, the goddess, a gargoyle, and a couple of wraiths all in bed together, full-out group grope. Ssssizzle!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review. I feel bad to leave a review saying that I didnt like it, but I just could not get in to it.
The book started with the main character sitting on a bridge with friends, but there was no introduction into the story or characters, and it led me to keep flicking back to check I hadn't missed something.
The story is told in the pov of Alex, who is attracted to Vadim, a newcomer to town. The pov is told in first person, as though its happening now, but then slips into a reflective pov, as though she is re-telling events that happened previously. Its very confusing.
Also hard to get my head round was Alex's attraction to Vadim, the way she goes to his lair (after being warned by her uncle to stay away from him) and she's considering getting naked and waiting for him to return - at this point they've only just had a brief meeting on the bridge and barely spoken 5 words to each other. Throw in the fact that she's supposedly a reincarnation of a voodoo priestess, and Vadim is a Vampire that knew her in her former life, and her ex is Xerxes from ancient Persia, it just all got a bit much for me, and I put it down after chapter 7.

I edited this book three years ago when the author's nonfiction companion guide to the Twilight series had made the NY Times best-seller list. She told me she knew what made the Twilight series so compelling and I double-dog dared her to put her fingers where her mouth was, so to speak. When this manuscript came in, I read it in one night. Her star-crossed bad blood lovers were riveting to me. She told me there were additional books in the series, so I re-published the first book to see if other readers wanted more of the immortal Greek vampire and the young voodoo heiress.

This book kept me enthralled the entire time and I read it from cover to cover and couldn't put it down! It's a short read, so you can get through it fast. One vampire book to definitely pick up!

When I first read the synopsis I thought, wow, what a unique combination, Voodoo Priestess and a Vampire. I was eager to start reading. However, once I started reading and after a few chapters, I felt like I had missed something. I decided went back and re-read it and found nothing new, but I still felt like something was missing and yet I couldn’t put my finger on it. So I thought, maybe it needs a little more background or a little more details added here and there. I don’t know, I’m not a writer, I’m a reader and I know this was bugging the heck out of me, but I continued to read, I’m no quitter, onward with the story. After a few more chapters I noticed something else… there were scenes that were way over done with too much detail and sections that really had no purpose. I could see how this could have been a longer and better story, with the right editing of course, and I wouldn’t have mind it at all.

I was aware that this was an adult novel but the language to describe her feelings of wanting Vadmir (the vampire) threw me off. To me it was vulgar and made her (Alex) sound like a slut. I wasn’t expecting it; there were no signs that she would be using that type of language. I assumed that since Alex is a college educated individual, she might have a better vocabulary to express her thoughts, actions and feelings, instead of sounding like a slut and acting like a dog in heat ready to hump anything with a hard dick. I was unable to click with Alex and found a lot of her actions and decision making very immature. There were a few sex scenes but they were over before I knew it. One of them went something like this and only after a day of having met him (it blew my mind)..(Alex)I want you to F… me…(Vadmir) no we can’t but I can make you feel better…he shoves his hand in her pants she has an orgasm, he then takes his hand back out of her pants grabs her hand and places a kiss on it the end… really!!!! I need more than that. It was like boom bang thank you ma’am. I came and conquered end of that scene on to the next one.

Like I said before the plot was interesting and I wish I would have enjoyed it more. This was my first Voodoo Priestess, Vampire read and normally I enjoy Adult science fiction/paranormal ect, and looking at all the great reviews I would have never thought the story would be a disappointment to me. Buy the looks of it, I am the only one that that feels this way everyone else thought it was a great story so take this review as you like. The story reads and sounds more like a draft, this, this and this is going to happen, to makes me wonder if the author was pressed on time to submit the story. Or maybe this is her unique writing style that I just didn’t follow. Just like the genre “New Adult” that is used for this book, I don’t know nor care to find out, if it is, maybe I should stay away from this new genre.

Besides what I already mentioned, there were a few errors and since I was already thrown off, to me they seemed to stand out more than usual. Also, the changing of tense from, making me believe that the story was in, first person present (good job), then inserting statement that makes you believe that its past tense (not good) were unnecessary and did nothing for the story. It only made me stop reading because I was confused and question as to why the author decided that there was a need to insert it.

So in closing only one thing left to do and that is….would I recommend this book to my friends? No, I wouldn’t.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and review.

Review: Nightfall by Lois Gresh. Wow. I am quite at a loss for words, firstly, because I think some of the book went right over my head, and secondly because it was really intense. I don’t know if I am right, but I found myself thinking quit a few times during the book ‘Thank goodness for uncle Frenchie’. I think if anything, him being alive and around, and him loving Alexie-Marie (I liked this version of her name given to her by uncle Frenchie) so much, and her in turn loving him so much made her more human. Which is a contradiction I know, she is and was human all along. But instead of turning into a godlike voodoo priestess that uses her power to hurt and destroy –as she did in the past – her being MORE human this time around – thanks to uncle Frenchie – enabled her to harness all her goodness and use her mercy for good instead of bad. I think it turned her from a self-centred, selfish, egotistical, maniac, into loving, gentle, caring person who thinks of other before herself. Of course, I think she should of fried Haimon’s ass, but I guess Gojim chowing down on his head was justice enough. Vadim, he loved Haimon. I don’t really know why. But any kind of love is better than nothing, even if it is tainted. And I think that Haimon put a lot of nonsense in Vadim’s head over the years, but Vadim’s love for Alexie-Marie kept him sane and more normal than Haimon over the long years. I think there is a lot more to the book, more history I mean, and I think it would be interesting to get into it. I enjoyed the book, and relished the facts provided ever so often. Of course I don’t know how true they are or not, and will definitely not go look it up, but either way, it was great information. I think Alexandra Marie Leveau waited a long time to become ‘real’ and Vadim waited a long time for their love to become ‘real’ and I think that finally they will be happy together. And who knows, maybe Skipp and Naomi will find peace as well. Happy endings for all!

This book was hard to get into to . It was interesting but choppy and hard to understand in places. Also the characters were shallow and their reactions to some things didn't make any sense. I thought that the author just changed the personality of the characters to fit her needs and them change them back later when she could.

The plot was original but it didn't make any sense and it wasn't well developed. It lost or confused me in a lot of places. This book is about a girl named Alexandra Leveau who one day runs into a guy named Vadim Blerinca and starts to change. Get stronger, get powers that are terrifying and seductive. She is the descendent of the Voodoo Priestess Marie Leaveau. Marie Leaveau and the Blerinca family have 'bad blood' between them and Vadim's father refuses to let them see each other. Alex starts merging with her ancestor Marie and the source of this power is Vadim the more time she hangs out with him the more powerful she gets. Enough that a touch or thought could kill everyone she's ever loved. Will she be seduced by the power or will she use it for good instead?

So this book was strange for me. It was an original plot but I didn't like the fact that Marie was so strong all she had to do was wish for something to happen and it did. When you make characters that strong they lose the ability to be related to and that makes them shallow and hard to like. Also I didn't like any of the characters really they were all shallow and all they cared about was power and sex. I thought that the love that spanned centuries by Marie and Vadim was not very well written to me it felt more like lust and not love. Marie was so concerned with power that she didn't much care about anything else including Vadim at least that's the impression I got.

Do you know the feeling you get when you go on holidays - the feeling you must have forgotten something? That's exactly the feeling this book gave me - I felt I had missed something, forgotten to read a chapter, not gotten the point or something like that...
And I do not like this feeling!

It is a good book, nicely written, with a few more repetitions than necessary but that's the authors personal style and I decided to just let it go. What gave me this odd feeling of having missed something was the story itself: several times throughout the book there are comments from Alexie (the protagonist) pointing out that she'll know better in the future, and that's what I didn't get in the end, these bits and pieces of hindsight. To me there was no clear plot, no event everything was pointing to, the changes were more in the protagonist - A Voodoo Priestess coming off age (in a way).

The characters were nice and felt real even though there was not so much time for deepening their stories.
Additionally I loved Vadim!!! He's just PERFECT! Where Alexie sometimes appeared ignorant to me, Vadim balanced her out. He was just so powerful but also good and still reasonable!!!

In the end Nightfall was not the story I'd expected but it was still very good and I can sincerely recommend this book to fans of paranormal stories.

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review *

All i got to say is that i went into this book with an open mind , and i hoped that it would meet at least some of my expectations ... Let me tell you , It didn't even meet one . This book was sooo boring ! I've got to give the author props for her unique storyline , but it was poorly executed. I thought that the plot was seriously ridiculous. . If this was written better and it wasn't so damm confusing i would i have definitely loved this book .
This was just a complete yawn fest .. it's less than 200 pages , yet it took me more than 2 days to finish it . Everything felt a bit rushed , and sometimes while i was reading it i felt completely lost :-| I couldn't even relate to the characters . Another thing that annoyed me was the grammatical mistakes , i mean i'm no editor but some of these mistakes you pretty obvious . I don't like to give books bad reviews at all , but this is just one of those books :( I would not recommend it to anyone either .

ohh before i forgot,
I swear if she says my fake fur coat one more time ! I'm gonna die x_x ...

NOTE: I got this book as part of an author review.
I was excited to Ms. Gresh has won so many awards so perhaps expectations were a bit high going in to this read. She had some funny moments such as "For my gargoyle Gojim had just eaten Vadim's father. Not a good thing for future romance." chuckle worth. But often I felt like the author thought readers were inept to remember details such as the three times she explained the knives or ingredients to protections needed, etc. I thought the main character Alexie gave up her identity to quickly for an educated woman, word choice of calling men 'dude' did not seem to fit her character's background, and the romance between her beloved and her was confusing at best as the plot twisted and spend 276 pages explaining details from the first moments. Of course we remember the mysterious silver box from the initial scene but waited till the closing pages to get back around to this eyebrow-raising momemt and only after the author felt the need to remind me yet again of this detail. I like giving stars. Authors put work into their plots and characters but I think this plot needs some work. So two stars for effort.

Note: I recieved this book from the author in exchange for a review.

This book is a whirlwind of action. When first starting to read this book, I was so confused. I felt like I had started reading halfway through the story. Normally, this would be frustrating and confusing, but somehow this worked. It was refreshing! I felt like I was learning with Alexie (Marie), instead of having an omnipresent story built up over time. I've *never* read a book like that before. It's completely against everything I've read in the past, but I loved it!

Even though I was confused about exactly what was going to happen while reading this story, I had this overwhelming feeling that everything that I was confused about would somehow fit together. I was right! This is such an intricate story, peiced together delicately to create the best effect. I couldn't think of a single way to improve this story. Kudos Ms. Gresh!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that is looking for something a little different than your average vampire love story.

I received this book as an exchange for my review. I'm sorry to say that I just could not get into the book. Maybe if it was longer and had more time to introduce characters and explain things more, it could have captivated me. There was a lot in a short amount of time. Many different types of paranormal went on in this story and I just couldn't grasp some of it. There were vampires, voodoo, gargoyles, wraiths and more. The way Valdim and Alexandra came together was just too sudden and strange for me. I didn't care for him to continually call her Marie and by the end of the story I wasn't sure if it was Marie or it was Alexandra. The ending was quite confusing for me as well, wasn't quite sure what happened between Valdim and Marie...Alex. I will give two thumbs up to the author for having an incredible imagination. Like I said if the story was longer and let things happen at a gradual pace, I could have been into it more.

Alexandra is your normal girl who just majored in math, lives in a tiny old house, struggles to take care of her uncle, works at the local gun shop and has a couple a friends.

Everything seems normal until a sexy blond 'god like' vampire comes into her life.

Her uncle's health decay and tells her a secret that will change her life forever. Her friends are not really who they seem to be. Her boss is full of mysteries. Inanimate objects turn to life. Love is complicated, almost impossible.

They say voodoo and vampire are bad blood, should not mix and stay apart, but in order to save someone who is dear, everything can happen... even the impossible.

The story is intricate, fast paced, entertaining, sexy, enjoyable and perfect for paranormal readers.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

When I finish reading half of the book, I finally admitted to myself that this is just one of those books that are not meant for me, I just can't get into it-I feel bad for not feeling connected with the characters, I always find myself distracted~putting down my tablet every now and then.
And for me there are too many unresolved issues at the end, like..I would love to know more of Xerxes and Alexandra's past in able to understand why Xerxes of Persia felt that kind of love towards Alexandra, and what's the very reason of Xerxes and Naomi's existence- I mean I think it was explained somewhere in the book but the explanation is not enough.

This book took me a bit to get into, but I was glad that I stuck with it. I like how the author jumped right into the story and the reader learned about each of the characters along the way. This was a well-written book with interesting characters. The premise is about two people who are forbidden to, yet they fall in love, something I never grow tired of reading. The paranormal genre is not something I typically do not read, but the idea of vampires struck up my curiosity although the voodoo was a turn off. The author did well at combining these two elements together to create a uniquely told story.

I was given an opportunity to read this book for an honest review.

I usually like all the books I read. The paranormal genre is a new one I started reading, so when I read vampires and voodo were being mixed together I thought 'how exciting.' This book did not meet all my expectations. I felt like the story of Alex and her vampire could have flowed a little more smoothly. Their attraction didn't seem to flow smoothly.

I was excited reading the summary and was really into it during the first few pages. It just seemed to loose me at times.

I will give it two stars.

I received this book for my honest opinion

I really wanted to like this book but I really couldn't. I felt the story was rushed and that there was to much going on and The story line threw me for a loop. There is not many times that I cannot finish a book, but this was one of those times. Although I had to push through it and finish it. I thought that this could have been a wonderful story had things been different

"I love vampire and anything paranormal, so when I started reading this I was not disappointed. I can't stand a story that is slow and this one wasn't. It was filled with non-stopping action. The plot kept me turning the pages and the characters, well let's just say I wanted to kill the villain. I can't wait to read more from this author." Trinity Blacio

This is a wonderful play on the tropes of Twilight (hence the cover). Instead of a passive, bland heroine, she gives us a reincarnated voodoo queen (who in this life just graduated from college with a math major), an animate gargoyle companion, Venus de Milo with her arms intact, and a bunch of other deliciously wacky twists. Plus some juicy 18+ scenes.

I love books with Vampires. What can I say they are my weakness. This story had your Vamp, Goddess and Vodoo and what a mix do they have. Will Love conquer all that's the big question? My question is Does Vadim love Alexandra or Marie? I really hope the story continues, and we get answers.

I really wanted to get into this book, but I just could not. The story and the paranormal got me confused at times and I did not care for the protagonists relationship at all. It was really hard for me to rate this book so low since the idea for the book was good, it was just executed as expected.

a short read.

The book has a promising plot and background and I did enjoy it, but I sometimes felt it was rushed or that there wasn't enough substance so information was repeated. I also wish that it didn't end the way that it did I'd like to know what happens.
