Descendant (The Kacy Chronicles Book 1) - a review by Rosemary Kenny
Doting Daddy's a State Senator and 'perfect' daughter Jordan's the apple of his eye, in this Wizard of Oz with a twist mix of urban and epic fantasy, that starts in Virginia and ends up with Jordan in Oriceran, after passing through a portal in a locket that once belonged to Jordan's missing mother, whom she's never given up hope of finding again one day.
Along the way, Jordan's helped by Sol and later Toth, winged beings who are among the least peculiar of some of the other creatures and events that befall Jordan on her quest.
Can she ever get back to Virginia? What happens to her in the city on Oriceran? Who are her enemies?
You'll become totally immersed in this novel which is book 1 in the Revelations of Oriceran/The Kacy Chronicles series by the wonderful Martha Carr, A L Knorr and Michael Anderle, (despite the sudden small cliff-hanger ending) and look forward - as I do - to the next books in the near future.

Well written but little of relevance seemed to occur
I did like the writing style with this one. It was a creative fantasy world created. However, this book almost felt like a sample instead of a whole read. It just ended abruptly. I get that it's part of a series but even for a first installment it lacked in too many aspects for me to enjoy it. the characters and plot were barely expanded on and had no depth. I won't personally be continuing the series when other books are released.

With that as a hook, how could anyone resist? I certainly couldn't, and I'm glad I didn't. AL Knorr and Martha Carr have written a fascinatingly neat novel to start off yet another new, and I anticipate thoroughly delicious, series. I'm not going to summarize it as I don't want to risk spoiling anything, and the kindle blurb does a good job of it, but I will simply note that if you found that blurb even remotely appealing you're bound to love this book with its well-crafted characters and well-written plot. I've read other books by AL Knorr and loved them. That's what attracted me to this book and series start. I've not read other books by Martha Carr but have learned she's written or co-authored several other books / series in a universe linked to this series. I suspect I'm going to be compelled to read those. I know I'm going to simply have to read the next book in this series once it's out. In the meantime, the bottom line for this book: highly recommended.

This book is the first in a series entitled Descendant, by A.L. Knorr and Martha Carr, and it hooks you from the start.
The story is beautiful. Jordan's mother disappeared when Jordan was a child. Years later, not long after Jordan earns her masters, she is given something that sends her on a long quest. I was with her all the way, unable to put the book down. My only issue is the cliffhanger ending, which left me with the sense that the thrilling final scene was missing a few pages. Nevertheless, I give this book four stars, because of its captivating story and the touching father-daughter bond at the heart of the narrative. I am craving the follow-up.

I wasn't sure about this to start, since the beginning was a little slow and I wasn't sure about the writing style, but it was definitely one of the most fun books I read this year!
Descendant is a portal fantasy about a missing mother, an alternate world, and the girl stuck between. The worldbuilding was so much fun, and I fell in love with the characters. I really can't wait for the next one! If you like fantasy of any kind, you will like this.

Great story. Jordan is fabulous. Sol and Toth are an enjoyable pair of male, winged warriors: one's wings feathered and the other's skin. While much of the story centers around action, Jordan's character brings a significant amount of humor as well. I look forward to the following stories.

Jordan has lived her entire life wondering about her mother's mysterious disappearance. One day, she discovers a portal in her backyard which transports her to another dimension, filled with creatures and races she's only ever read about in fantasy novels and myths. She befriends an Arpak, a winged human, who helps her navigate through the perils of a world she doesn't understand. Is this world the secret that will explain what happened to her mother? Will she ever be able to find a way to return home?
This book was so well written. The language was extremely descriptive, and I really got a picture of the landscapes, the creatures, and all the details of the world. The entire story was told from an omniscent perspective. It mainly focused on Jordan's adventure, but there were a few chapters that happened away from her where we saw what other characters were doing. The only thing I found unusual about the third person perspective was that sometimes we saw inside the other characters and heard what they thought or saw their perception of things. Many authors only show the perspective of one character, even when using a third person voice. This was a little unnerving, but it did enhance the story since we understood how other characters perceived the same events. Definitely a bold choice.
The plot moved along at a steady pace - there was action, but also time for the characters to dissect their feelings and reflect on events. The story definitely was not complete, as I expected from a book with "book 1" and "chronicles" in the title. I did think the ending was a little abrupt, and I kept trying to turn the page because it didn't seem like a stopping point. I'm very excited to read the next book in this series and continue Jordan's adventure.

I loved this book from start to finish.
Jordan is quite a character and, although brought up in the lap of luxury, on Earth, in the USA, she isn't a spoilt brat, but somebody not afraid of hard work.
Having grown up with the knowledge that her mother disappeared when she was three years old, Jordan is very close to her State Senator father so, when she turned up to their Summer Home, after her University Exams, she couldn't wait to see him.
While she waited for her father, who was running late, her old Nanny tuned up, and handed her a small box, with orders not to open it until she was gone.
With that, a whole adventure started for Jordan, that would take her far from her father's home, and in search of a Mother that she was convinced was still alive.
Many strange things would happen to Jordan - the least of which, was her ending up being drawn through a Portal, and onto a Planet called Oriceran, where she will make some really startling discoveries.
This book kept me riveted, as any book by Martha Carr, and Michael Anderle does. But I'm also loving this next new-to-me Author, in this series, one Abby-Lynn Knorr, or A.L. Knorr!
I really love her style of writing, which fits in so beautifully with Martha's, and I'm very much looking forwards to getting on with reading book two of this series: 'Ascendent'.
This is especially true, after the cliffhanger ending! Lol
But this is yet another reason why I'm so glad I found Martha's books, after she had completed quite a few of her Oriceran series, so that I haven't had to wait for any of them to be published, before being able to read the completed sets!
Anyway, after I've hade some much needed sleep because, as usual, I've read on far into the night, I'll be starting this next book, then I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think about it!

This is an amazing series. I wish they would make movies of the books. Think Harry Potter on steroids. I loved Sol and hope he will be in all of the books. I think my favorite was the elves. It was such a fascinating story behind the ones that were prisoners and how they were punished.
Jordan is thrust through a portal into a world she could only dream of. How will she ever get home? And she knows the locket that’s responsible for it all holds the key to finding her mother she thought dead. Sol helps her on her journey. Together, they fight harpies. I loved the harpy until I saw how mean it was. That was such an awesome scene. The elves were amazing but I would be leery of them. There was a surprise Jordan finds out about herself. I didn’t see that coming at all. And at the end, we meet a tiny dragon who imprints on her and she is stuck with him for life. Some readers have said it ends on a cliffhanger, but I don’t really agree. Sure we haven’t discovered where her mother is or how the adventure ends. If we did, there wouldn’t be any more books. But the end was a great close to the book. We see a lot accomplished and how Sol sees Jordan differently now.
I recommend the audiobooks. The narrator is amazing! He reminds me of BJ Harrison. He can do any voice and accent. He really brought the characters to life, especially Sol.

I’ve read quite a bit in the Oriceran universe, and I like to think I’m well versed in it. That it is a middle of the road urban fantasy and is good but not great. The Kacy Chronicles occur relatively early in that universe. It is pretty good, better than some of the others for sure.
A. L. Knorr has a good grasp on character creation for certain. I’m thrilled to read Jordan’s journey so far. The character is interesting and has quite a bit of unique characteristics without being overboard on it. Sol is more stereotypical, but still follows the same pattern of being a little more unique than the average stoic male character in a urban fantasy.
The story is simple and clean, not too much over the top happens. There are a few pitfalls with clichés and other stereotypes, but overall, it is strong in the telling of it. The tone is a little higher fantasy than other of this universe.
Overall, a strong start to the series in a decent universe with tons of individual storytelling styles. I think I’m going to like this series much more than the original series of the universe, The Leira Chronicles or the later but significant School of Necessary Magic series.

Cool world building; author paints a magical picture with her words. It’s like a Fae world with things like elves, harpies, and winged men and women. Love that type of magical setting; makes for some entertaining and fun scenarios. There were times the story moved a little slowly, but I really enjoyed the adventure Jordan is involved in. The story follows Jordan, who is about to find out there’s a lot she didn’t know about. She’s sucked into a magical portal after saving Sol. Sol is a winged man that has an important message to deliver, so the last thing he needs is dealing with a human who knows nothing about his world. Jordan and Sol set out on a quest filled with danger and secrets. Love when characters have quests they need to accomplish and have to travel to different towns and such. There’s some unique characters and interactions that make for a fun read. I’m excited to see where this story goes; there’s still a lot of story to be told!

Just as great the second time read!
I was first exposed to the Oriceran universe through this series. I enjoyed it so much that I looked into the rest of the multiple series being added to Oriceran. Knorr does an incredible job jumping straight into this universe, and immediately enriches the entire universe. I highly recommend this series to any fan of fantasy! With one caveat, I recommend considering looking up the main Oriceran universe page, take a look at ALL the series there, and think about reading the different series in order. If that seems intimidating, or just too much to take on in your busy life, this series is FANTASTIC all by itself, so I will leave all that up to you, but do yourself a favor and one way or another check out Knorr's Kacy Chronicled (the first of which, of course, is this book: Descendant.) Highly Recommended!

Everything you thought you knew but didn’t
This is my first ever Oriceran story and I’m pumped! This author did a great job of creating a magical world that could come true if it hasn’t already. I like that the world of Oriceran is a collaborative effort of multiple authors. I kept reading about it from the various newsletters I get from authors and simply had to find out about it for myself. I picked up this book from KU and I’m glad I did. This was very well written with descriptive scenes that a reader can picture easily. The main characters are easy to become acquainted with and others I would like to know better. I will continue to read this series and those of the other authors as I am looking forward to seeing all the different takes on this world.

Great Start
I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in this new series. Jordan has come to spend the summer with her father. Her mother disappeared about twenty years ago, never to be seen since. Her old nanny turned up whilst her father was out and gave her a locket that used to belong to Jordan's mother. It turns out that the locket opens a portal to another world, which she accidentally activated - twice - resulting in her being taken to the other world. The guy that had come through when she first activated the portal is her only hope of getting home but at the same time she realises that her mother is probably here too. So she has to find her also. She has to find elves who can heal her new friend and also repower her locket.

Another great series. This is the first book in this series and I am anxious to read the next book. These are not stand alone books and they are a bit of a cliff hanger type books. I listened while traveling and it made the trip go so much faster. This first book is about Jordan and Sol. We also have side characters that are pretty great. There is some interest between Jordan and Sol but this book is not about romance. Jordan has always wondered what happened to her mother. During this story Jordan gets some clues about what happened to her mother and she discovers some things that are a bit wondrous and scary.

It's been a while since I've read a Fae story wasn't really sure if it was since on the MPG that genera wasn't mentioned. However I haven't seen that genera in a while, has GR merged it with Fantasy?
Anyway back to the story, fast read, innocent story, nothing that might be considered inappropriate for middle school readers.
One story line which I love, no fillers, which I love. The story was about the two MC, Jordan and Sol. Allowed the reader to get to know the two main characters before other characters are thrown in and introduced or the story starts to deviate with other story lines.
I really enjoyed the story. On to book 2.

A well written story involving a portal to a fantasy world that becomes a rich setting for the journey of self-discovery for Jordan, a grad student and only daughter of a Virginia politician. Jordan's character is likeable and easy to relate to and the author does a good job of describing this new world through her eyes. As the plot unfolds and more information is revealed, the pages turn quickly, making this an enjoyable read that leaves the reader anticating the next book in the series.

Wings To Soar
Jordan is A likeable, compelling character. She is taken from her comfortable life and thrust into a dangerous confusing new world. She discovers more about who she really is and the connection with her mother's disappearance. I like the action, humor and realism of the characters. Jordan is A likeable, compelling character. She is taken from her comfortable life and thrust into a dangerous confusing new world. She discovers more about who she really is and the connection with her mother's disappearance. I like the action, humor and realism of the characters. They make me feel as if I am right along side them living their adventures. It is interesting to see Sol's increasing attachment to Jordan and Toth's attraction to her, both torn from her by duty. Jordan's mother disappeared when she was small. No body was ever found and the mystery of the disappearance was never resolved so she has always harboured the hope that maybe her mother was still alive somewhere.
Then a mysterious man appears out of nowhere, landing in Jordan's favourite huge oak tree. she discovers a portal and a whole other world beyond. There she finds there are possible answers but also so many more questions.
The story kept me gripped and I couldn't believe when it ended. I will be moving on to book 2 as soon as I can.

This is book 1 and does end on sort of a cliffhanger so be prepared to not have all of the answers at the end of Descendant. That being said it was an enjoyable read and I liked Jordan's journey of discovering who she really is. Jordan can be a little stubborn and spoiled but I like her anyway. My fave part was their stay with the elves. I hope the Author elaborates more about them in future books. I look forward to more in this series and from this Author.

If you enjoy following interesting female characters to new worlds where unknown creatures lurk, love can spark and never before seen species keep secrets, this is a great series to pick up.
I couldn’t put this book down and literally bought the next book in the series seconds after finishing this one. I really enjoyed the insights in the each character and the growth that can come to them and their relationships with one another. I highly recommend this series and this author.

I agree with a couple of other reviews that it started kind of slow, but, boy, did it pick up. Whoooosh! I couldn't put the book down. I 'm glad Sol came back for her, as she didn't seem to be able to go any further on her own. And then to find find out about her origins, oh my! I thought there would be a hint about her Mother, but nothing! And poor Daddy, he at least knows she's Ok for now. So what I want to know now is: When is the next book coming out?? Please tell me it is going to be soon!

I picked this book up on a recommendation and I am so glad I did. The characters and world are wonderful creations. This one of those rare stories with just the right mix of finding, fighting, and love. Just as soon as you help the main characters escape a desperate situation, you get to help them seek great rewards, and onward, until suddenly finding you have read late into the night.
I'm starting book 2 immediately and I don't plan to sleep tonight.

What a great start to a new series! Once started, I had a hard time putting the book down. There was so much happening, twist and turns and surprises, that I just didn’t want the book to end. Didn’t like the cliffhanger though, it makes me itching for the next book, but there isn’t one. Besides that, loved the story, the characters and the world building was awesome. Highly recommended!

So well written it is as if this book: Descendant: The Revelations of Oriceran; The Macy Chronicles Book 1, were "written for me". This group of authors created one of if not the best story I have ever read, I would and will recommend anyone and everyone read it and frankly find anyone who doesn't enjoy it to have something wrong themselves. LOL

Great start to the series!!
Ok so I read A.L. Knorr's elemental books and I loved them so much I decided to try the next series and I couldn't put it down either!!! Great fantasy read! I can't wait to see what happens next! A.L. Knorr is a must read author for anyone who likes fantasy! I am so glad I found her!!!

A truly great mythical adventure filled with surprises around every bend. All manor of strange and fantastical creatures threaten to devour or destroy our heroic main characters. The story is so engaging that it is truly difficult to put it down. I can't wait to learn more about Oriceran and find out where this story leads. FIVE WELL DESERVED STARS!!!!!

Jordan is home from college for the summer. Her senator father is busy but a surprise visit from her former nanny and a stranger drags her to another dimension. Jordan is on the search for her mother who went missing when she was a child and the search takes her to different parts of Oriceran. This series has already caught my attention and I can’t wait for the rest.

Wonderful start to a new series in the universe of Martha Carr and Michael Anderle. Jordan is a typical college student in Virginia whose mother disappeared when she was 3. It starts to become interesting when she and an Arpak wind up going through a portal to a magical world called Oriceran. I enjoyed it and can't wait to continue with the series
