I haven’t been this excited about writing a review in a long time! First, let me tell you about this truly amazing story. Billie is comfortable, almost perfectly sanguine with her life. She’s the triple threat; popular, pretty and a good student. Billie doesn’t have a care in the world. Or does she? Billie has a reoccurring nightmare. That, in and of itself, is not so unusual. But, Billie always has the same horrible nightmare on her birthday and has had it as long as she can remember. Now, that is unusual.
So, while Billie loves everything “Birthday,” like parties and gifts, her special day is always tinted; marred by a sweat-inducing, heart pounding, scream provoking nightmare. Billie’s sixteenth Birthday is no different. After a night of horrors, Billie wakes, gathers her composure and is surrounded by her family for a morning of birthday wishes before school. Billie’s mom gives her a special gift for her birthday, a family heirloom, a necklace that’s been passed down for generations and always bequeathed on the sixteen birthday. Affected by the necklace, so intense; Billie feels hot panic and passes out. This is the beginning of many strange occurrences to follow. But, there is more to tell.
After Billie’s Birthday “vapors”, she convinces her parents to allow her to go to school. She goes to school, wearing her birthday necklace with little on her mind other than meeting up with her best friends Arianna and Jocelyn. In addition, Billie is looking forward to seeing her boyfriend, Tony, and receiving whatever gift he may have for her.
Billie thinks everything is okay, that the morning was a fluke, that the world is still on its axis. After all, Ramey is leering and Tilly is quiet. Nothing out of the ordinary about that. Freak Boy is staring at Billie. Now, that’s different. Freak Boy is a “non-entity” like so many others that don’t merit entrance or warrant notice in Billie’s world. Although Billie has been in classes with Freak Boy since elementary school, she doesn’t even know his name. But, he knows a great deal about Billie. Freak Boy, whom Billie will later learn is named Tyler, knows who and what she is and has been sent to be her Watchman.
Tyler quickly reveals his identity to Billie later that day. Time is of the essence; Billie’s sixteenth birthday is a catalyst, the bringer of her destiny. Billie learns that the world is a lot bigger and scarier than she’s ever imagined and the life she’s planned isn’t the life she will live.
As Billie learns more about her duties and gifts and begins training, her friends notice the weirdness meter inching higher and higher. But Billie is dealing with a lot. In fact, Billie is in danger--mortal danger-- and anyone around her might end up as collateral damage. And Billie also learns that some of the “non-entities” are more than they appear to be and aren’t friendlies. In fact, they’ve been waiting for her, searching for her, knowing that her sixteenth birthday would trigger her powers, making it possible to find her. They’ve been sent to kill her. And Billie’s strangeness causes Arianna and Jocelyn to distance themselves from her and Tony too, until he learns the truth. Arianna and Jocelyn, even her family don’t know she is literally fighting for her life.
No, Billie’s life isn’t what she thought it would be. It’s keeping secrets, dealing with scares, learning to fight and training to use her gifts with Tyler. In the middle of that, Billie and Tyler are growing more and more attracted to each other, so much so that Billie thinks it might be “some sort of superpower,” to which Tyler responds, it’s “hormones and it’s a bad idea.” He’s right!
And then Tyler is suddenly gone. Billie is devastated. She is lonely in a way she’s never experienced and has to be on guard every moment. As the danger pursuing Billie escalates, others are drawn into her new circle. They know who she is and are willing to aid in protecting her. But what can they do? They are only human. Billie must survive, if she doesn’t…
I love, love, love this book!!! Natalie Star has written a book with a dynamic cast. Billie is a likeable protagonist. But she’s not perfect; her character doesn’t morph into a saint as she grows in emotional, physical and mental power. I like that. Billie’s imperfection, while at times annoying, makes her feel real. Billie is self-absorbed and a little shallow like many teens and never completely loses those idiosyncrasies. Billie does mature as the story progresses to become what I affectionately call “kick-butt spunky.” Tyler’s character will strike an accord with many teens. He’s not part of the pretty-popular click or the jock-macho click; he’s a loner. Tyler has surprising depth. He’s a fearlessly passionate, extremely complicated being.
The supporting cast isn’t bad either. They are former love interests, new enemies, unsupportive friends, surprisingly helpful brothers and more. Natalie Star does a galvanic job of managing a busy cast. She’s written a fantasy story with such believable characters they will resonate with you. You’ll cheer for some and roll your eyes at others as you turn the page anxious to know what happens next. This is a must read!!!!
