Mikey Brooks is a small child masquerading as adult. On occasion you’ll find him dancing the funky chicken, singing like a banshee, and pretending to have never grown up. He is the author/illustrator of several books including BEAN’S DRAGONS, the ABC ADVENTURES series, and author of the middle-grade fantasy-adventure novel, THE DREAM KEEPER. He spends most of his time playing with his daughters and working as a freelance illustrator. Mikey has a BS degree in Creative Writing from Utah State University. He is also one of the hosts of the Authors’ Think Tank Podcast.
Aside from writing and illustrating, Mikey also love to read middle-grade and young adult fiction, narrate picture books, sing, and even sew. That’s right he also sews! He’s made practically everything from, Elizabethan costumes for the Utah Shakespearean Festival, to modern style wedding dresses. Mikey’s greatest love is his family. He gets more than inspiration from them; he gets support, courage, and most of all happiness.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: This is the first installment in a series of ABC adventures featuring Professor Vontriponmybottom, a heroic explorer determined to share with children the alphabet through exciting and fantastical means. MY TAKE: I'm always on the lookout for fun books to read to my grandchildren. I know some people like to keep the language of books for really young children simple, I love exposing them to our language. A child's vocabulary is broadened the more they're exposed. I was pleased to see that Brooks wasn't afraid to use language in the book (example: Professor Vontriponmybottom--try saying this fast three times).
I'm a fan of exposing kids to myth and legend, so a book about magical creatures is right up my alley. I even learned some things, which is something else I like to do.
And the art? LOVED it. I'm drawn to rich, bright colors, and the charming creatures Brooks has in the book are a delight to scrutinize. It's fun to go through and teach colors to the kids as I'm reading to them.
The challenge is in trying to keep them from changing the pages too quickly.
Illustrated and written by the talented Mikey Brooks, this book was a whimsical foray into the world of fantastical creatures that we dream about from the time we are children. Beautiful illustrations with vibrant colors and accompanying rhymes that flow off the tongue. I was very happy to read this to my own boys. Nicely done, Mikey!
Such a cute book. Lots of magical creatures that I knew about and a few I haven't heard of. The kids loved it. And professor Vontrponmybottom is awesome.
