Lawyer Frank Prescott is exhausted. The forty-year-old bachelor works late into the night, poring over documents. When he sleeps, he wakes up in a panic. Wesson Woodbury, invites him along on a canoeing and fishing trip in Saskatchewan, Prescott gladly accepts.

However, nothing about the excursion is relaxing. As the journey begins, tensions mount and tempers flare between Prescott and Woodbury. When they meet the rugged Joe Easter, a Canadian trading company owner, the man welcomes Prescott to fish at his home in Mantrap Landing. Prescott is happy to join him. But between Easter's lonely wife, unrest among the area's indigenous Cree tribes, and a dangerous race down the rapids, getting back home safely will be the only thing that can calm Frank Prescott's nerves . . .

Novelist Harry Sinclair Lewis satirized middle-class America in his 22 works, including Babbitt (1922) and Elmer Gantry (1927) and first received a Nobel Prize for literature in 1930.

Middle-class values and materialism attach unthinking George F. Babbitt, the narrow-minded, self-satisfied main character person in the novel of Sinclair Lewis.

People awarded "his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humor, new types of characters."

He knowingly, insightfully, and critically viewed capitalism and materialism between the wars. People respect his strong characterizations of modern women.

Henry Louis Mencken wrote, "[If] there was ever a novelist among us with an authentic call to the trade...it is this red-haired tornado from the Minnesota wilds."

Really enjoyed this book. Read it aloud over a six week period with my wife. Very funny, but also very thought provoking as the main character has to struggle with decisions about loyalty, love, and friendship. Some of the best fictional dialogs I've ever read are in this book.

Few things are as enjoyable as reading a Sinclair Lewis book written in his classic prose. This is the story of a city slicker New York lawyer who is talked into going on an outdoor adventure in the far North of Canada. It's a great adventure that brings in several unforgettable characters.

What is not to love about this book? Almost nothing. Like any tragedian worth his salt, Lewis doesn't sugar coat or demonize his characters. They are regular human beings playing the cards they've been dealt and the result is: isolation and loss. Nobody gets the brass ring in the end. This is not a spoiler because everyone already knows the story of human experience. But what a magnificent ride it is. I particularly appreciate the interaction between the lawyer and the banker, the lawyer and the fur trader, the fur trader and the manicurist, the three of them and the missionary, and all of the above and the Indigenous Americans, and all of the above and the lakes, rivers, mosquitoes, swamps, and forests. The denouement is beautifully done. If there is one thing that I would change it is the title, which I am guessing was not Lewis' own: it makes it look like a vilification of the main female character in the book: that is not what Lewis intends, although it does express how some of the male characters may feel about her.

Smart, witty and unexpected!
Full disclosure - I usually don’t watch a movie prior to reading the book it is based on. Not this time! I discovered Lewis’s Mantrap thanks to one of my favorite movies of all times - a silent film of the same name starting ingenious Clara Bow. And I’m so glad that I did. Although some of the first chapters were a bit drawn out, once I got to the main story line, I couldn’t put the book down. It kept me guessing till the end and left me with something to think about.
Sinclair Lewis turned out to be somewhat of a revelation - an underrated author of the roaring twenties, he definitely surpasses Fitzgerald for me and gets very close to Maugham - my favorite writer of that era. Surprisingly, I liked Lewis’s writing style even better than Maugham's. Maybe it was the movie, but Lewis's characters really came to life in my head. Would like to read more of his works.

I enjoyed this book a lot. never expecting to given the subject matter -- a camping trip in Northern Saskatchewan. But it was well-written, exciting and interesting, I can understand that it was the subject matter of two Hollywood movies - the story is tautly laid out; there are no sub-plots or distracting political messages. It kept be interested to the last page, something you can't say for every book. Well done.

A rare find in a secondhand book truck in Budapest ! Moves along at a good clip with compelling characters such as Ralph (Yale man, lawyer, suffering from ennui) who aspires to be honourable but ends up losing both in friendship and in love. A most enjoyable read.

Kastaş Yayınları'nın çok bilinmeyen kitapları bastığı bu serisinden yine bir kitap seçip bu ayki okumalarıma ekledim. Vahşi Aşk, ne daha önce yazarını duyduğum ne de kitabı bildiğim bir eserdi fakat yazarı Sinclair Lewis, Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü'nü kazanan ilk Amerikalı yazarmış ve Amerika'da edebi çevrede büyük saygı gören biriymiş fakat ne yazık ki ülkemizde sadece bu kitabı Türkçe'ye çevrilmiş olarak bulunuyor ve bu kitap en ünlü kitabı bile değil. Hal böyle olunca kitapla ilgili çok bir beklentiye girmedim ama yazarın Nobel kazanmış biri olması biraz da ilgimi çekmedi değil.
Kitabımızın baş kahramanı Ralph, New York'da iyi bir kariyere sahip ve düzgün entelektüel çevreye sahip bir avukat. Bir gün iş temposundan yorulup tatil planları yapmaya başlayan bu orta yaşlı adam, bir spor salonunda tanıdığı Woodbury adlı adamın doğaya yaptığı yolculuğu merakla dinliyor, adamın anlattığı ada hayatı, egzotik yaşantı ve Kızıldereliler ile beraber balık tutma gibi ada maceralarını ilgiyle takip ediyor. Woodbury ise şansa bak ki buraya tekrar gitme planı yapıyor ve Ralph'i de davet ediyor. Ralph de bu daveti kabul ediyor ve ikisi beraber teknelerle, kayıklarla uzun ve inanılmaz bir yolculuk yapıp istedikleri yere varıyorlar. Fakat Ralph'in planladığı gibi gitmeyen bu tatil, ona inanılmaz sıkıcı ve sıkıntılı geliyor çünkü ikili çoğu noktada anlaşamıyor. Ralph, mesleği ve çevresi gereği kaba işlere gelemeyen biri ve sırf bu yüzden Woodbury'nin saçma sapan zorbalığına maruz kalıyor ve daha sonra bu adaya gelen ticaret ustası Joe ile anlaşıp beraber gidiyorlar ve arkadaşı Woodbury'yi bırakıyor Ralph. Joe ile güzel bir ilişki kuran Ralph, sonrasında Joe'nun karısı Alvy ile tanışıyor ve bu çiftin arkadaş çevresiyle güzel bir tatil geçiriyor fakat Ralph'ın gün geçtikçe Alvy'ye olan ilgisi de artıyor, hem yeni arkadaşına ihanet etmemek hem de Alvy'ye umut vermemek için çabalayan Ralph'ı okuyoruz en çok.
Kitap, başlarda çok ilgi çekici gelmedi bana ama daha sonra tam da istediğim yerde olayların gelişmesi ve daha ilgi çekici yerlere gitmesi sebebiyle beni içine çekmeyi başardı. Yazarın bu kurgusu belki de çok farklı ve özgün değildi ama anlatımını ben çok sevdim. Betimlemeleri çok iyiydi diyebilirim, karakter analizlerini çok beğendim. Ralph'ın girdiği ruh halleri, Alvy'nin güçlü kadın duruşu gibi çok güzel tutumlar vardı kitapta. Karakterleri çok güzel anlatmış yazar. Kitabın sonu çok beklediğim gibi değildi ama bu haliyle de beğendim ben çünkü dostluğun da önemli olduğunu çok iyi yansıtmış yazar. Bunun dışında kitabın ön sözünde okuduğum şekilde yazarın sarkastik bir dili var ve bu eleştirel kısmı da kitapta örneklerin içinde yansıtmış, mesela Kızılderelilere yapılanlar ya da şehirli köylü farkları gibi.
Ben kitabı gerçekten beğendim. Belki şaheser, mükemmel diyemem ama yine de okunabilir bir kitaptı ve bana keyifli bir zaman geçirtti. Kitabın akışını sevdim ve bu şekilde merak ede ede bitirdim kitabı. Ada macerası, karakterlerin sağlamlığı, biraz dram ve romantizm için çok güzel bir kitap diyebilirim.

Ralf Preskot konzervativni član njujorške advokatske firme, svoju majku smatrao je najprefinjenijom ženom, ozbiljnom i punom razumevanja, i jedinom koja je savršeno ispunjavala njegove želje sve do svoje smrti. U četrdesetoj godini suočen s tim gubitkom, neženja, bez ikakvog interesovanja kao i do tada za bilo koju ženu koja nije njegova majka, odlučuje da prihvati ponudu Vesn Vudberija, rukovodioca prodaje ugledne kompanije, da odmor provedu na severu u divljini, preživljavajući uz pomoć Indijanaca.
Dva potpuno različita karaktera Preskot koga je majka šoljom toplog mleka ispraćala u krevet do četrdesete godine i Vudberi debeli dečak, meta vršnjačkog zlostavljanja tokom odrastanja u okruglog, samozadovoljnog poslovnog čoveka, suočavaju se s najsurovijim prirodnim izazovima i jedan sa drugim u borbi za opstanak, praćeni mržnjom Indijanaca, njihovih plaćenih vodiča na putu.
Ovo je pre svega izuzetna psihološka drama iz pera američkog Nobelovca, koja je do detalja ogolila glavne junake, ali i svaku osobu koju su sreli tokom putovanja i koja je obeležila njihov nesvakidašnji odmor.
