Looking for the One: Stories of Seeing the Lost, Lonely, and Broken Through the Eyes of Jesus

Rate this book
"I would love to share my faith, but I don't know what to say."

Most Christians don’t know how to talk about Jesus. They know they ought to share their faith, but evangelism methods feel awkward and pushy. Feeling guilty and discouraged, many believers simply avoid the subject altogether. But what if there was a simple, normal way to introduce people to Jesus, without sounding like you’re selling something?

This book explores the message of Luke 15:4, building on the radical notion that Jesus—the Good Shepherd—is actively seeking the One lost sheep, right now—today. What if we joined Him on His search, inviting Him to look for the lost, lonely, and broken through us?

Full of true stories about walking with Jesus as He finds the lost, Looking for the One is your invitation to follow the Good Shepherd to natural, authentic interactions with people who are ready to meet Him. It’s an opportunity to exchange awkward conversations for organic, supernatural encounters. It’s a front-row seat to experience the power of the gospel in your own life—as alive today as it was in the New Testament.

In October 2023, I was “the one” David was looking for and he ended up handing me a copy of his book in a parking lot. This book was an incredible dose of encouragement to me as I have slowly read through it. The timing was only because of God - my brother has gone astray and to have this book in my hands to encourage me that God seeks me, He sees me and He is also not done seeking my brother. Not only am I encouraged towards my brother but this book has helped me see the importance of keeping my eyes open to seek the ONE on Jesus’ heart each day.

While the author has many poignant stories admitting wonderful insights from God with regard to whom he should approach and how—and encouraging us to not be timid—I was disappointed that he had no stories about “looking “ for the least or last in our society. McIver never seemed to go outside of his comfort zone. For those hoping to be emboldened to talk to unhoused people, beggars, the foreigners (Lev. 19.34), and any others of a different ethnic or socioeconomic class, this book fails to be role model on how to love “them” as we love ourselves and those in our “tribes.”

This book has easily made its way up to one of my top recommended books in the Christian genre. I have loved EVERY inch of it.

David shares raw and personal stories about how he asked the Lord to open his eyes for the “one” he wanted him to intercede/cross paths with daily, and he writes down these accounts.

I am leaving this book with my eyes open to bigger dreams in how God can move & a desire for bolder prayer.

Wonderful book. The author was the team chaplain for the Minnesota Twins. He seems to have a knack for finding someone to bless by asking the Holy Spirit to open his eyes for the one person who God wants him to connect with every day. Great stories. I am trying to keep my spiritual eyes and ears open as a result of reading this book
