[Siren Erotic Paranormal Romance, HEA] As a part of the royal line of magic, Maya Griffon knows just what evil is brewing in her own home. Growing up poor, Quincy Wallace learned that everything has a price. Nothing is unconditional, and nothing is ever free. Love? Love is for those that can afford to be made the fool, something he will never be again. Maya, though, might just be the one person who can change all that if he dares to let her in. With a crown on the line and danger pressing ever closer, love is truly the most powerful and pure magic there is. But will it be enough? ** A Siren Erotic Romance
I have been waiting for Skittles/Quincy's book since reading about him in Their Unexpected Mate. He was such a great character in that book and I definitely wanted to learn more about him. Their Mating Illusion started out so funny! The back and forth between Quincy and the dragon twins (Allister and Aiden) had me laughing so much and then the nicknames that he had for them~cracked me up! I couldn't wait to see how he was going to work out having to share his mate with one of them. This humor just pulled me right into the story. It was a great way to start the book and I totally enjoyed it. I love a book that can make me feel good by laughing at the antics and comments of the characters.
Their Mating Illusion had me from the start with such a well written, easy flowing, funny, interesting story. And of course the return of some of my favorite characters. I am so looking forward to Talon's book~just love him! I loved Maya from the start. The fact that she ate gummy worms amused me so much~so cute and funny! She was perfect for Quincy! And Quincy...I just couldn't help but fall more in love with his character. As I said, I was so looking forward to reading how Quincy was going to share a mate with one of the dragon twins and I was little bit disappointed that it didn't turn out that way in the beginning. But Quincy broke my heart when he said that he would never share a mate because for his entire life he never had anything that was just his alone. And in the end, I was so happy with the way their relationship turned out with just the two of them. Plus the fact that Allister's book sounds so good and I cannot wait to read it!! lol
So up until about the 60-65 page mark, this book was getting a Best of the Best rating from me. It was going into my keeper pile to surely be reread. But then something changed when Quincy accepted being mated to Maya. From that point on it was like the story was written by another person or that these were totally different characters. Quincy and Maya weren't written the same as in the first 60 pages or so. They acted totally different~saying and doing things that they didn't do before~I don't now what happened and it totally threw me off. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the story and I can't wait for the next book and I loved the ending, but the story just lost its spark for me that it had prior to that point and I couldn't get it totally back. I did get glimpses of Quincy and Maya as they were in the beginning of the book but just not enough. Oh...one of my favorite scenes is towards the end when they are all at the Council meeting and another favorite is when Talon forces Quincy to come into his power by putting Maya in danger. Still the first part of the book was so incredibly good that it made up for any changes in the characters. This is definitely my favorite of the 2 books in the series so far. And is a keeper that I will reread.
I am definitely a fan of Honor James and although I might struggle with a few things with this series I still very much enjoy it and I look forward to reading more. I am also interested in another series that Honor has coming out entitled Royal Wolf's.
Love this cover!!
4 out of 5 rating!!
***ARC provided by Honor James~Thank you so much!! :)
Although I liked the story, the mush between the hero and heroine is ridiculous and the jumps in time with no warning. Author should spend more time on the story and not the silly monotonous dialog between the main characters. No one and I mean no one spews that much sugar back n forth. I'm gonna try the third book. Hope it gets better.
I had this on my TBR list for a long time and finally decided to read it. As I said in my review for the first book you have to definitely suspend reality and the same goes for this one. This one was full of a lot of lovely Dovey stuff. It just was a little bit over the top for me in that department. Good, story but every other sentence was I love you. It got to be a bit much.
action, drama, fun times, interesting characters and a good storyline. i really enjoyed it all.. it was a good second story in this series.. it made me smile and laugh.. it was all around a feel good interesting story
So the beginning of this book was really great, but then it sort of took an odd turn. Somewhere along the way Skittles had it implied (and it was rather subtly implied because it took me a few rereads to decipher what the author meant) that he'd be sharing his mate with one of a pair of dragon twins. Skittles is so not on board with this and *SPOILER ALERT* the only reason Gaia seems to do this is to screw with him. Seriously. This part of the book confused me because (honestly) it was shittily written. What I can sort of understand is that their Goddes, who loves them and thinks of them as her children, decided to mindf*ck Skittles because he needed to feel what it was like to lose his mate so that he fought hard to keep her safe. Yeah. So what this translates to in the book is Skittles deciding to be an ass and ignore his mate (which hurts her) and tell Gaia that he doesn't want her if he has to share. Oh, he throws a bit of selfless crap out there about how she'd be better off with the dragon blah blah blah, but what it really boils down to is that he doesn't want to share and he's willing to give her--and the chance of ever getting a mate--up because of it. He does state that he's been belittled most of his life and that he couldn't see himself living in a relationship where he had to deal with the same thing constantly, but I never got the impression that either of the twins mocked him. In fact, it was mostly Skittles mentally making fun of them for being so "slow".
So he gives up his mate and is willing to walk away from her, not even willing to fight for her, despite the supposed overwhelming draw and instant love mates are supposed to have when they see each other. Gaia says sure, I'll take that connection away and leave her with the dragon twin, who has no idea he's even remotely connected to her. In a matter of moments Maya sees through this and realizes something is missing. She finds out what happened and Gaia tells them she was just joking. Seriously. She just needed Skittles to feel what it was like to lose his mate. My problem with this logic is that Skittles willing gives her up. He's willing to walk away from her. After experiencing the loss of "her" he doesn't seem all that choked up about it. Lesson not learned in my opinion.
There were some inconsistencies in this book that I felt should have easily been dealt with. One of which is the supposed prophecy read over Maya's birth stating that she won't have a mate. And yet...she does. Nothing is really said about this, or the fact that one of the dragon twins was told he'd be mated to the same woman Skittles mates, yet neither wonders at anytime why they aren't lusting after Skittles' woman. Unless Gaia magically cleared that from everyone's memories and we were just supposed to infer that, it's a loose end that was left to dangle. During the story we also learn that Maya's friend (the whole reason she's on the cruise ship and meets Skittles in the first place) is being sexual abused by her father and is basically trapped due to a magical hold on her mind. She isn't ever saved! In fact, the father makes a threat to help Maya's brother capture her, as he's still believed to be "family" and safe. Nothing comes of this. At all! Honestly, it makes me wonder if the brother was really trying to get a hold of Maya. It seems like he's just suddenly become interested in her because of something she does on the boat, but in later conversations the brother indicates that he assumed Maya had gained the magic that he wanted, and had been actively hunting her and making her seem like a wild child to their community on purpose. If he was hunting her previous to this, she wasn't exactly hiding all that well. Also, it seemed like the "trick" she used that got her brother's interest was something she planned to do from the start, thereby blowing her cover. Maybe she could have come up with a better plan to save her friend? Well, from this danger anyway. But really, this trick didn't tip him off because apparently he set this whole thing up in an elaborate attempt to capture his sister as she returned her friend to her father. Yeah. I know. This plot line is so very very muddled :P
Another thing that threw me was that in the previous book a big thing was made out of that fact that Skittles eats a ton of skittles. But we learn in this book that that sort of thing isn't abnormal for magic users because they burn a lot of energy and need the sugar. This seems to be a known fact, while in the previous book it was an "oddity". It's not odd if a bunch of people from the same race do it. Geese.
Over all, I feel that the tone of this story shifted midway through. The characters changed and some of the things that happened to them seemed ridiculous.

The story was ok, but I was sick of the use of the word darling after the 5th time. Unfortunately she used it 88 times. I will still try the next book in the series, but she does it again I'll pass on the rest of the series.
Much better than the first. A great story and not as much over sharing or over explaining. Enjoyed Skittles in the first so was glad he found his bond mate. Cant wait for Talon to get his. Enjoy the way Gaia pops in and out. Glad that Kat and the gang showed up too
Loved this book Quincy breaks my heart and I just wanted to wrap him up. Maya is just looking for a place to belong, together they find each other. Loved it!
