When the power-crazy Most Royal of Fire Dragons decides he wants to rule not only his own hot southern kingdom but also the icy wastes of the Snow Dragons' northern territory, catastrophe occurs. The Fire Dragon ignores the warning from the powerful Book that Twolegs will eventually destroy his kind, and sets out crisping and frazzling the world. Little Tuft, a Twoleg, can't ignore the warning and enlists the help of the last remaining Snow Dragon in a thrilling and magical quest to save the world from burning up...
An entrancing story, lyrically told and gorgeously illustrated, which will be appreciated on a variety of levels by children from pre-school to 8-year-olds and older.
Vivian June Isoult French MBE was born in 1945 and educated at Exeter University. Vivian French was best known in school for being extremely skinny and for talking a lot. At school she developed an attachment to words and later became an actor, then a storyteller, and finally a writer of children's books. She is the author of more than two hundred books. Ms. French lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, and has four grown daughters.
I didn't find the text particularly flowing to read and Miss 4 was only interested in hearing it once.
Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
I do love picture books and this one is just beautiful. It is the tale of how Little Tuft, a Twoleg, and the last of the snow dragons triumph over the evil fire dragons that want all of the world for themselves. The illustrations are exquisite and the expansive landscapes emphasise how tiny (& how brave) Little Tuft is. It has an ending that is both hopeful and a little sad.
This is another children's book that I found and listened to on You Tube.
In a world on fire a boy goes in search of the last Snow Dragon.
This is a wonderful story and every child should read this. And every adult as well! It's pretty imaginative and great escapism. Children's writing at it's best.
I read this to whole class over 3 sittings and the children were enthralled! It captivated the children and provoked the most stimulating and thoughtful discussion. The illustrations were varied and unique. There is a quirkiness to the characters and twists and turns to the plot that really hold a child's attention
