Learning about Heraldry

Rate this book
This clearly written and beautifully illustrated book tells about the fascinating subject of heraldry, which is concerned not only with the romantic chivalry of the past but is also a very colourful part of our life today.

You will learn how to read a coat-of-arms, which can be a heraldic pictorial record of a family, city or school etc., and to appreciate that with its attractive and varied decorations, emblems and mythical creatures, heraldry provides interest and enjoyment in many spheres of our daily life.

NB: Whilst the cover states 'Learnabout Heraldry', the actual title page states only 'Heraldry' and that is how the book is recorded.

It never ceases to amaze me how informative these Ladybird books are; they cover the subject admirably and are excellent on detail that gives the reader a very good understanding of the subject.

I am no heraldry expert but thought I would like to know a little more about the subject so when I saw a copy of this book I purchased it. And it proved to be a good buy for I now know how a coat of arms is designed, what each of the component parts are, why certain symbols are used, why certain colours (or should I say tinctures) are used and what they represent and also some of the history of heraldic development.

One of our masters at school was a member of the College of Arms and was responsible for designing some of the home countries' football badges so in quiet moments he would often tell us tales of how they came about so I was pleased when early in the book there is a football illustration and background to how football and cricket clubs came to have their own coat of arms. And we learn how the coat of arms began at the time of the Crusades.

It is interesting to read how many different types of crosses there are, to note the 10 Royal Beasts that are taken from heraldic devices of the Queen's ancestors, to learn a little about scholastic and civic heraldry and to learn how the coronets are designed for the different classes of peer. And there is lots more in this most interesting book.

okay so I actually just picked this up at my grandmas house for the #lolz and to get my goodreads challenge yk but honestly it was really interesting?!! ngl it MIGHT be the beginning of my knight era because I’m craving some revelry and merriment after a jousting tournament rn… also some choice fave words which I loved included: marshalling, Fesse Point, sable, and of course ESCUTCHEON 🤤
don’t be surprised if my 2022 aesthetic consists of mainly medieval shields and coats of arms
