Who Killed September Falls

Rate this book
Arianne Tawnison is shocked to read about the death of her life-long friend September Falls in France. Wild and intensely beautiful, September had been hailed as the next great artist and her sudden death sends the cost of her work escalating dramatically. The media coverage focussed more on September’s wild and controversial behaviour, matching it only to the vivid imagery of her art, than the facts of her death.

Deeply upset and perplexed by the lack of answers being provided in the media, journalist Arianne leaves her home town of Salisbury and travels to Ceret in the South of France, determined to unravel the mystery that surrounds her friend’s death. Shrouded in secrecy, it’s all too evident that there is a web of lies and deceit to unravel as she retraces her friend’s last days, meeting the former lovers and friends who have their own agenda and conflicting memories. Following the clues, Arianne realises that September’s whole life had been built on a lie and as she draws closer to the truth, Arianne suddenly becomes aware that her own life is now in deadly danger. v

Loved this novel. The preface unusually gives you the first-hand view from September perspective as the victim followed by the first hand account of the investigation by the lead character, Arianne. Miss Young's writing skills lead you through the drama of the murder, the emotion of the investigation and builds up to quite a heart pumping last couple of chapters. I found myself reading faster and faster as I approached the finale. You can really picture these characters and you soon find yourself really hoping your favourite isn't the guilty party. A couple of twists along the way, I didn't guess the final outcome - in itself a rarity these days. Well done, and really hope this novel is the first in a range of crime novels from this talented writer.

I read the first chapter and found it boring... Too many descriptions, too much unnecessary information. I found its premise interesting (after all, the victim knows her killer...) but I just wasn't interested enough to continue reading.

From start to finish, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I knew who the killer was very early on but getting to the why & how was gripping. It's the first book I've not wanted to put down in a long time. I loved the writing style & the characters. Great read!

The narrator is a self absorbed 39 year old (emotional age 14) who is wallowing in grief at the death of her best friend, who was vain, selfish and bitchy. Reads like a short story from an old fashioned woman's magazine, padded out to novella length.

Great suspense thriller

This book kept you guessing until the end. I think the author paid too much attention to Arian he's feelings. The twist as to the killer really was, was a big surprise. Can't wait to read more from this author.

Short but sweet

An interesting twist of a murder story. the story keeps you on the edge of your seat. The main character, Arianne Tawnison, tells the story well and is believable.

On the whole, I found the story ok, but predictable. I knew from about 20% into the story Who Killed September Falls. I never fully committed to the characters and only read on to see if I was right with my guess of who the killer was. I didn't find any one thing "wrong", but just felt detached and sort of wanted to yell at Arianne that maybe it was time she act like an adult, not a whiny teen who can't handle anything or to maybe think before she acted.

Really wanted to like it more but it was too simplistic. I also guessed the protagonist more-or-less as soon as they were mentioned. Having read that the novel was written by the author as an attempt to show that a novel could be written in a month, its shortcomings make sense. Just because you can write a novel in a month doesn't mean that you should.
