Mourning Dove brought back many memories from my Grandpa's farm. I really enjoyed the relationship between Billy and his beautiful grandparents. I also appreciated the realistic stories of farm life.

I read Mourning Dove aloud with my sister. We both loved the beautiful relationship between Billy and his Grandparents. We laughed and cried with Billy and decided everybody needs a friend like Kenny. The sensitive topic of death and loss of Billy's dad is written with an incredible tenderness. We definitely recommend Mourning Dove!

My third graders are in the midst of Mourning Dove and are completely engaged. In fact, I love how they connected so thoroughly with Billy in the first two chapters that they were unsure and afraid for Billy! They have started into the third chapter now, and they are already excited about Billy and what he is going to learn on his grandparents' farm.

In addition, my students had the extreme pleasure of sitting with Carolyn and learning about real live chicks! She gave them good information, let them hold the chicks, and encouraged them about the things that they were worried about for Billy! Needless to say, when we got back to class, they were begging for some reading time!

Carolyn is an extraordinary educator! I got to watch her with junior kindergarten students, my students and seventh graders. They were all completely engaged in what she had to say and interested in her books. I highly recommend checking out the Spruce Valley series as the children will get a beautiful connection with rural life in a story that is engaging and wholesome!
