Un gentleman in strainatate

Rate this book

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

John Bridges is the author of the bestselling book, HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN, today's most popular guide to etiquette for the modern man. When it comes to handling any issue related to courtesy, common or uncommon -- whether it's how to use a shrimp fork, how to conduct yourself in a business meeting, or knowing when to turn off your cell phone -- John is "Mr. Right."

"Over the course of my life, I've been to a lot of parties," says John. "What I've learned is that it's not enough simply to get invited. What's really important is knowing how to behave yourself, so you get invited back."

A native of Slapout, Alabama, John has served as Classical Music Editor for the Nashville Tennessean, and was an award-winning columnist and editor for the Nashville Scene. He also gained a wide following as an associate editor for Nostalgia magazine and as an etiquette columnist for Traditional Home.

John served for eight years as Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of Nashville. A frequent media guest, he has been featured on the "Today" show, "CBS Sunday Morning," and the Discovery Channel. He has been profiled in the New York Times and People magazine. His advice has repeatedly been sought out by major men's magazines such as Esquire, Men's Health, and Details. John is also the co-author, along with Bryan Curtis, of eight other books in the "Gentlemanners" series, a publishing phenomenon that has now sold more than 1.25 million volumes, world-wide.

HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN and other volumes in the "Gentlemanners" series have been translated into more than 15 foreign languages -- ranging from Spanish and Croatian to Latvian and Vietnamese.

The only time I’ve ever got to read a 200+ page book in one day.

The edition of the book I have is a hardcover version from Brooks Brothers (but I didn’t buy it from Brooks Brothers), and it’s not available on Goodreads for some reason (could be that the book doesn’t seem to have an ISBN number either). This book was extremely basic and rudimentary, the book treats the reader as if they’ve never traveled before as it provides “advice” that any common sense-wielding person would already know! And the information presented on different countries is so extremely limited, like it doesn’t give you any fun facts or trivia about a country’s history or culture, and the language “guides” doesn’t give you a way of pronouncing certain words (esp when it comes to how Gaelic and Icelandic words are presented). Also, it only gives you basic words to learn which won’t get you far in a foreign country. Most of the book is very America-centric as it only gives information about American embassies/consulates, and since this book came out in 2007, who knows if this info is still valid nowadays (the book mentions iPods, so you know there’s a chance that phone numbers and addresses must’ve changed). Also, the temperature measures are only in Fahrenheit. There’s very little in actual useful information, but I’ve already forgotten it by now.

Overall, you’re better off with an ordinary travel guide than this milquetoast excuse of a “book”. Sure, this edition I have may look pretty with its gold trimmed pages, but it’s all looks and no brains for this one.

Most of the country specific info is pretty good, but don't look for in-depth itineraries. A good read, get it from the library. I got mine as a groomsmen gift from my brother for his wedding; it was a perfect thoughtful gift (I spent the last two years abroad, and will move abroad again soon).
