He won’t be denied again. Everything Jasmine thinks she knew is about to change. This time he’s keeping her.
I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.
No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.
I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.
I just finished Mine to Chase. It just came out today. I was anxiously waiting for this and read it in just a few hours. I'm so sorry to say I am extremely disappointed. Laurann Dohner is one of my favorites and this one just did not deliver. That really hurts me to say. I guess I would give it 2 and 3/4 stars if I could.
The story was rushed and underdeveloped and Jasmine was way too accepting of her situation right away. I know it is paranormal but this was just not at all realistic. And where did Chase calling Jasmine "Mine" come from? Why all the fighting and killing? Why is he a jerk to his sister? Why did she (Jasmine) have to start turning so fast? I could go on with the whys, but I don't want to give the whole story away just in case you want to read it for yourself.
With all that being said, I have loved all of Mrs. Dohner's other books and I will continue to read everything she writes. Maybe this is the begining of a new series. If so, I'll give it another try. I really liked the short story "Scarred and Kilt" from the anthology "Something Wicked this Way Comes 2".
I can't wait for the next New Species book. She has never let me down with those. Mmmmm...New Species... I love me some Species male. ;)
Well this was the first Laurann Dohner book where my brain wasn't screaming 'Raaaaaaaaaaape' for most of the book. (Or at least very ambiguous consent).
However, this was probably the weakest of all her stuff I've read. Wait, that might not be fair. I didn't dislike it. It didn't bug me. It just seemed... weak. Her cyborg series I have issues with, but that's mostly the personality issues and coldness/raaaaaaape. The New Species I had issues with at first as the dialogue felt forced and raaaaaaaape. But then I grew to absolutely love the series, which both the rape and dialogue issues for the most part have been dealt with. The Zorn Warriors were my first delve into her works, and again dialogue and raaaaaaaape issues (well, the first book. the latter ones not so much). But those series, even with the dialogue issues, had much more overall development, and a stronger base.
This just felt a little weak.
The series had promise with Scarred and Kilt in Something Wicked This Way Comes, but it just so far doesn't seem to be living up.
Plot was pretty basic.
The dialogue... meh. The female Jasmine (to which she gets referred to as Mine. And he is Chase. Mine To Chase. Hmm... trying to be clever there with the title tie in. Found it just awkward instead.), I can see she was trying to make Jasmine witty and different, so when Chase first finds her locked away near death you get a weak "hi. did you buy that property I showed you?"
Really? Again, I realize she was trying to be witty and different but it came across as blasé considering the situation she was in.
Then boom, she's turning and must be mated etc etc. Rush rush rush.
Oh, and super secret den isn't so super secret since another wolf found them, not only found them but walked right in. Walked right in through the super secret chambers into their bedroom. He's supposedly living / sleeping in the equivalent of the batcave's panic room, but yet a wolf he doesn't like just strolls right in unexplained other than "i followed you."
Then, the big dramatic action at the end? Our main character Justine literally passed out and everything happened off book. Really? Not a strong female character at all. I wouldn't be surprised if she pissed herself when she passed out. TSTL.
Chase was a bit of an ass. I don't remember him from the first story in Scarred and Kilt. But he was definitely an ass in this one. He was meant to be an ass. So that Jasmine could yell at him that he's being an ass and thus show that 'she is the only one who can temper him and he could immediately be a better man.'
Meh. I'll read the next, but I don't hold much hope for it. Much rather have her New Species series.
I can't remember who Chase is. I will have to reread the book before this one then. Love the sound of this book, and I'm happy to find out that I only have to wait about two weeks until I can get it~ So much better that having to wait two months and working myself into a frenzy.
Has everyone read the excerpt that wanted too? If not, here it is;
This was a very good story. Chase and Jasmine make a good pair and the story was short but interesting.
Jasmine is a real estate agent. She met Chase a year before and fell for him big time. He, on the other hand, didn't seem to have the same reaction. She wanted more was left dreaming about him for a year. When she's kidnapped by a psycho that ends up being a rogue vampire she thinks all is lost. When she sees Chase again and he rescues her, she thinks its all a dream but what a way to die...
Chase is a vampire/shifter mix. He can't turn in to a wolf but is an Alpha shifter strong enough that he controls the local pack (not that the pack likes his control, he's just stronger than them). He met Jasmine when buying some property and recognized her as his mate. But he lives in a harsh world and didn't want to put her through that. When he finds her dying in captivity of a rogue vampire he decides he has to protect her and destiny has decided she's meant to be his.
Jasmine was close to death when Chase finds her. He heals her with his blood and proceeds to work to convince her to accept being his mate and completing the mating bond with him. She's understandably unsure about this. She was very attracted to him when they met before and she found a lot of admirable qualities about him (his intelligence, his sense of humor, his sexy body...) but she feels it's too soon to just jump in to a mating. Regardless of this, both of them fall for each other pretty quickly (with them being mates and feeling the pull to each other and all). Chase does convince Jasmine to take the risk though and they have a nice start to a promising relationship.
Jasmine and Chase working things out between themselves isn't the only issue confronting them. Chase's pack is hard to control at best and start causing trouble when they find out he took a human mate. He also has trouble with some local vampires seeing Jasmine as a weakness and trying to use it against Chase. On the good side, Chase has some allies....his sister (I liked Jenny and it looks like there might be a set up for her getting her own book) and his vampire bosses who are also his friends. With their help he manages to take care of the imminent danger and dispatch their enemies, which leaves things tied up nicely for the end of the story.
I really enjoyed this story. Jasmine and Chase are a hot couple and I was happy for their HEA. I wouldn't have minded the story being longer (maybe see a little more of their HEA starting) but overall, I didn't really feel it was lacking. I'd recommend this story. Thumbs up. :D
I read this book as part of the Claws and Fangs compilation.
Mine to Chase 3 out of 5 stars Jasmine+Chase So Chase, hybrid Vamp+Werewolf works for Blaron+Lethal as their head of security. He gets called in towards the end of book 2 to help in capturing and stopping the rogue vampire to avenge Lacey’s sister. When he arrives, he’s met with death and amidst all that Jasmine…who he had a thing for but kept away from her for her protection. Yeah right. I hate the fall on my sword types of heroes…because we all k ow, eventually, they’ll end up together and so inevitably they were wasting time in their keeping away from my heart bullshit. Anyway, he saves Jasmine. They face opposition to their love. Then the guys have a major show down at the end and that’s the end of the story for all the three couples. They were all short novellas. I would have preferred if they had an epilogue to show them all settled into their paranormal domesticated bliss.
This is going to be a short and sweet review. Ok maybe not sweet per say. I didn’t like this one, let me tell you why. I enjoy the hell out of a good novella. Getting right to the chase (ha funny b/c that’s the characters name too) and having a story told to me in a shortened version. *IF* it’s done right. Something vital was missing in Mine To Chase. The heat between Chase and Jasmine felt manufactured. Fake. Not there. Chase and Jasmine had previously met when she served as his realtor though nearly a year has passed. Chase is half werewolf and half vampire, a combo nobody seems to like because it makes him a threat to both sides. He acts as an enforcer and a leader to his pack though every single one of them would love nothing more then to take him down.
Unbeknownst to him Jasmine has been taken hostage by a volatile murdering vampire who Chase has been sent to dispatch. Finding Jasmine in his clutches and near death sends him over the edge and engages his mating instinct. He decides he HAS to mate her. To keep her safe. Except everyone now wants her dead because he mated a human. Didn’t make one lick of sense to me. Dohner goes out of her way to immediately pose a threat to Jasmine by adding a female intent on making Chase her mate. Arry shows up all mouthy and trying to convince Chase to leave the pesky human to die and instead run off with her. Perfect set up for a further conflict. Except Chase tells her no and that’s that. Instead towards the end another female shows up named Kim…and the exact same thing happens!
Add to this that Jasmine is incredibly weak. She’s wishy washy and can’t make up her mind. She’s backed into a corner but the sex is just so good she can’t form a rational thought. She never fights back. Even when faced with death, holding a gun in her hands….SHE FAINTS. Um no. Just no. I can’t do fainting heroines.
I’ve enjoyed Dohner’s books in the past. I’m sure I’ll enjoy them in the future. They all center around sex as an erotic romance, but this just didn’t do it for me. This one I can’t recommend.
I give Mine To Chase by Luarann Dohner 2.50 stars.
MINE TO CHASE is a short novella from Laurann Dohner. Now I don’t actually remember Chase all that much, but when I began reading it, I did find that I enjoyed him quite a lot. Dohner has this unique ability to make every hero of hers desirable. There’s something dark and primal about each of them that make them very appealing.
Also, Dohner’s writing voice is always impeccable, so free- flowing and easy to read. For such a short story, I also thought the chemistry was good. It could have been better, but for only 93 pages, I think the author was able to achieve that in a well-balanced way.
The big thing for me was the plot. I felt like I was reading in the middle of a story where events have transpired already and I’m one step behind. This is not a usual thing with Dohner’s work so I think it might have been this one title where things felt a little jumbled. The novella lost my interest a little bit in some areas, but while most novellas lack in the romance department, I felt that MINE TO CHASE simply lacked in the plotting.
Though not my favorite of Dohner’s work, I still think she’s a great auto-buy author.
Jasmine is living the last night of her life, and it is a nightmare. A sexy savior arrives from her past, but it just may be too late.
Chase is shocked to find Jasmine is a victim of the vampire he lawfully executed. He has never wanted anything more than to shield her from what he has been, but now she has been touched by the worst of his kind.
Chase hovers between two worlds, and Jasmine is the one person he wants yet can never have. Circumstances have changed, so Chase is elated to find he just may get what he wants, even if he has to fight both sides of himself to make it happen.
Ms. Dohner draws readers then dumps them in the middle of a scene out of the best horror novels and offers a light. I absolutely love how Chase discovers Jasmine and her reaction to seeing him. It has been a scene only Ms. Dohner could give her readers. I look forward to each book from Mrs. Dohner, and Mine to Chase will remain on my list of books to read over and over.
This was a good quick read, Chase is half vampire and half werewolf which means he is never completely excepted but he is completely feared because he has all the powers but none of the weaknesses. When Chase saw Jasmine he knew he wanted her but he also knew she would be safer away from him so he left. Jasmine never forgot Chase after they met so when she finally see's him again she is sure she is just hallucinating before she dies. While Chase in on the hunt for a rouge vampire he can't believe his eyes when he see's Jasmine is being held by the rogue. Now that Chase see's how quickly he could have lost Jasmine he won't waste any more time making her his. But others don't like Jasmine and Chase together. This was a great novella I loved that we got a half vampire half werwolf and as with all Laurann Dohner book Mine to Chase comes with a hot possesive hero, though this was was a short read it was a great short read.
Chase I really wished he was more alpha male I mean he was sorta alpha male but not like all alpha male, "I'm serious about the mating. We'll live together here where you'll be safe. I'll still have my job but you'll never have to worry about me cheating. You'll be it for me, the only one I want." I mean he is consider to Jasmine and humans, "mated is married. We could have an official ceremony if you want. I'm not opposed. What's a piece of paper and some guy saying words compared to the kind of bond we'll have?" Jasmine is a feisty thing I think she's perfect for Chase, "she's your sister, not your servant. You go to the store if you want steaks and I'll cook them." I mean he really does care for Jasmine and her wants and needs, "I'm glad to hear it. I like it when you stand up to me." He leaned in, smiling again. "Besides, you project your thoughts forcefully at times. You weren't happy when I left this morning. You want a honeymoon and I agree."
Well damn.. 2 1/2 Stars.. I am not a huge fan of the short stories and this one is a great example why.. It was rushed.. It was underdeveloped.. It was a huge let down..
I love Laurann Dohner and was excited to read a new Alpha tale but this one was just not a winner to me.. It did what I hate most.. It was a Q&A basically.. I get why (to give us background info) but it is just so unnatural., You just don't go into a conversation with someone you've know and start detailing your entire relationship to them.. The entire book followed that format..
Sex: Even that was lack luster.. I loved the bite and sex but other than that meh.. Not on par with what ive come to love from Ms Dohner..
Well overall.. Meh.. Not what I wanted from what could've been a sexy hybrid tale..
It was a good fast read. Exactly what I needed right now. (spoilers ahead) Not that is was actually a good book. The heroine was way too accepting of mating with a virtual stranger after being rescued from a psychopath. Because, after being kidnapped, tortured and kept in a basement with dead bodies for god knows how long, what you really need hours after being rescued is a night full of sex with a supernatural you didn't know existed, who btw also drinks blood just like your kidnapper did. But don't worry, he already loves you..
Oh well it got me out of my slump so I'm grateful :) 2.5 stars
A good quick read, should have been longer The title of my review says it all. I will read anything by Laurann Dohner, I think she is a terrific writer. This book was very short, especially since I really liked the characters, there's the usual blood and gore associated with vampires and werewolves and a quick fight scene at the end. I would have liked more of the interaction between the h and H in this book, because for me that's what this author does so well, but it did not happen in this book.
Chase Woods walked away from Jasmine once, not wanting to force her into a life she may not want. As a mixed breed of vampire/shifter Chase is feared by both races. His strength is unparalleled and with his unique abilities and without comes the constant threat of hostility from others. When Chase finds Jasmine barely alive and the victim of a rogue vampire, he can either let or die or claim her as his mate. Although life has completely turned upside down for Jasmine, her feelings for Chase have never wavered.
I have read this book once before and I really enjoyed the storyline, but I think it was just way to short. We are just missing some important parts of this story.
I liked Chase but I didn’t feel it. It is a good little story too dip your toe into Laurann Dohner but it just didn’t have that smoken’ hot feel that most of LD’s books do.
I liked the narration, but I think LD has a lot better narrators who can do a male voice whole lot better.
*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*
It wasn't a bad story, just boring. I've come to expect much more entertainment from this author. And it might have had the most anti-climatic climax I've ever read. Disappointed.
Slow going book. Not too much excitement for me reading this one. It really was a filler waiting to get one of Dohner's New Species books or Zorn books.
He walked away from her once to save her from his world but when he rescues her from a rogue vamp he can't walk away again. While they were hot and I liked how she processed through learning about his world, there were odd moments like how he treated his sister that I didn't care for. It did make me smile and I would definitely enjoy reaching future books about this world.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
i was mildly annoyed by Chase's term of endearment but putting that aside, it was a nice short read. hot sex scenes and a simple plot. I was intrigued by his 2 ancient, vampire friends and will probably be reading them soon. :)
Not as good as the others. Jasmine is not very vocal and everything pushes her to be his mate very fast. La neta no me gustó. La chica dice como 10 palabras en toda la novela (exagero, pero sí) y Chase mata a literal todos para salvarla, meh
I have reading a LOT of stand alone books recently but this one is the first in a while where I wanted more. A lot more. I want to know how everything goes. Did she learn to fight? Where did they go for their honeymoon? Is the pack more excepting? Etc.
Too many things that didn’t quite make sense. Needs lots of editing but it’s an old book so meh. The whole thing needed to be developed because it fell short. I do think this is where the VampLycan series got a start so I gave it 2 stars just for that.
