Stealing Magic

Once they lived and loved in darkness.

Stealing Magic is the first historical romance set in NYT Bestselling Author Susan Sizemore's popular Vampire Primes universe.

No one at McHeath Manor's house party is who they seem. The infamous rake is a vampire working for the British government. The housemaid is a witch. The valet is a spymaster. The courtesan is a vampire hunter. Amidst all this deception, witch Grace McCoy is determined to become pregnant with vampire Julien Weaver's child.

Grace is prepared to do her duty, but hardly expects the intense desire she feels making love to a vampire. Julien expects tumbling an innocent servant girl to be a pleasant diversion from the jaded aristocrats he's used to. What Julien and Grace find together is passion enough to fill a lifetime.

But a love to last a lifetime may not be possible when the witches want the child and the vampire hunters are determined to take Julien's life.

It's been a while since I read a Primes book. They're some of the best vampire romances out there. This, however, is the first historical I've seen. I'm going to have to catch up a little more.

A historical primes novella. Grace McCoy is a mortal witch on a mission. Every few generations one of her family seduces a paranormal in order to become pregnant in order to add additional magics to their bloodlines. This generation it is Grace's turn to seduce vampire, Julien Weaver, become pregnant and leave him. Only this is not so easy for Grace because she becomes drawn to Julien. He knows he is drawn to her but isn't quite ready to accept that a mortal would be his bondmate....but by their night together he knows it. Unfortunately, Grace has disappeared and he'll have to find her.

This was good, enjoyable in that it's a historical, there isn't a need for the whole big reveal (which I'm starting to find tedious) and the characters, what we know of them, are pretty likeable. You never really get a lot of depth in a story this length, but Julien was not overly alpha and Grace, despite her cruel intentions of stealing Julien's child, was not really cruel - she's actually being manipulated by her family. I guess my problem was in that last 10% when Julien finds Grace to steal her from her family. There's no discussion about it, no confrontation really. Was Grace angry with her family? Are they okay with her leaving them? There could have been some more wrap up regarding the family that set Grace on her course with Julien and then kept her hidden from him.

3.5 stars - When it's time to add some new blood to her clans' bloodlines, Grace's target is vampire Prime Julian, a spy for her majesty on a mission to discover a traitor to the crown.

This was a quick little Primes' romance in a historical setting, I liked the witch/vampire pairing and there was just (barely) enough to make the story work in the short space. But that said it probably helps to be a fan of the series to get the most out of the story because there isn't much in the way of world building to bring newbies up to speed - just references that us 'oldbies' will recognize.

Grace and Julien. Set in the early 1800's, Julien is an aristocratic vampire who works as a spy for the government. Grace is a witch on a mission. A mission to seduce Julien and get pregnant. The explanation for that is kinda glossed over, but it was still a good short story. Not a lot of pages, but it holds a fair bit of info and keeps you interested. It's pretty much an insta-mates story, but sweet and sexy. There's a mystery, fated love, magic and crazy fanatics. Mostly written as an introduction or back story to the 'Prime' series, it certainly makes me want to read more!
