After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.
Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.
He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men's magazines.
Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.
In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.

Twee boeken in één bundel waarvan ik het betwijfel of King, na die vele schietincidenten op scholen, het boek "Razernij" nu nog zou schrijven, want vooral het begin van dit boek waarin twee docenten worden neergeknald deed me daar toch erg sterk aan denken, zo erg zelfs dat het boek evengoed ter inspiratie zou kunnen zijn genomen, al gaat het boek na zo'50 pagina's een andere kant op....
"De marathon" is met 250 pagina's het forse verhaal uit deze bundel waarin me net als bij Razernij de voortreffelijke dialogen opvallen. De marathon verveelde weliswaar ook, doordat je van meet af aan weet dat de hoofdpersoon gaat winnen. Daardoor ontbreekt er spanning en is het aan King om op een ander manier spanning aan te brengen, waarin hij niet echt is geslaagd. Wel prikkelen de dialogen waarin de onderlinge verhoudingen tussen de lopers duidelijk worden, maar is het te magertjes om daar zoveel pagina's mee te vullen.

Charlie Decker goes berserk at school! After he gets suspended he grabs a gun from his locker and goes to his classroom, shoots his teacher and takes the entire class hostage. It's clear Charlie is very disturbed and has a huge problem with authority. After holding it back for a long time he finally acts on it.
What will become a seriously long and tense afternoon will also be a very clarifying experience, for Charlie but especially for his classmates whom he urges to lay their souls bare. Pitted against themselves and each other they need to find a way to survive this excruciating ordeal while the police and the school need to find a way to stop Charlie from killing more people.
Rage is the first book that was written and published under King's pseudonym Richard Bachman and collected in the 'The Bachman Books' until Stephen King himself decided to have it withdrawn from publishing in later editions, which is quite unfortunate. But as a European this may be hard to understand, as an American though it is not as there are a lot of school shootings and this book deals with just that kind of issue. King himself didn't want his book to be an inspiration for teenagers to go out and kill teachers or fellow students.
Apart from that, Rage is not the best Bachman novel but it does offer a teen's inner struggles with authority, with finding a way to deal with it (the wrong way!) and finally somehow dealing with it and sharing a tense moment (afternoon) with peers that deal with their own problems and struggles. I think King managed to offer a look into the mind of a teenager and the way they look at the world. For Charlie this may be a very distorted kind of world, the beginnings of a psychopath's mind!
Last year I reread the three other stories from this collection but I wanted to make the collection complete so I reread Rage as well. The only two remaining Bachman stories I'll have to reread this year now are 'Thinner' and 'The Regulators'. Thinner will be pretty soon as it will be released in Dutch this year in a beautiful limited edition by Luitingh Sijthoff (LS Uitgeverij)

Charlie Decker gaat volledig door het lint op school! Nadat hij wordt geschorst, haalt hij een pistool uit zijn kluisje en gaat hij naar zijn klaslokaal, waar hij zijn lerares neerschiet en de hele klas gijzelt. Het is duidelijk dat Charlie ernstig verstoord is en een groot probleem heeft met autoriteit. Na het lange tijd te hebben onderdrukt, geeft hij er uiteindelijk aan toe.
Wat uitgroeit tot een extreem lange en gespannen middag zal ook een zeer verhelderende ervaring blijken te zijn — voor Charlie, maar vooral voor zijn klasgenoten, die hij dwingt hun ziel bloot te leggen. Tegenover zichzelf en elkaar geplaatst, moeten ze een manier vinden om deze ondraaglijke beproeving te overleven, terwijl de politie en de school proberen te voorkomen dat Charlie nog meer mensen vermoord.

Voor Charlie kan dit een zeer vertekend wereldbeeld zijn — het begin van de geest van een psychopaat!
Vorig jaar herlas ik de drie andere verhalen uit deze bundel, maar ik wilde de collectie compleet maken en heb daarom Razernij ook opnieuw gelezen. De enige twee overgebleven Bachman-verhalen die ik dit jaar nog moet herlezen zijn De Vervloeking en De Regelaars. De Vervloeking zal waarschijnlijk snel volgen, aangezien het dit jaar in het Nederlands zal verschijnen in een prachtige gelimiteerde editie van Luitingh Sijthoff (LS Uitgeverij).

Luitingh Sijthoff heeft nog een boek uit de reeks van de boeken die Stephen King onder zijn pseudoniem Richard Bachman opnieuw uitgebracht in een luxe limited edition. Niet enkel is het een streling voor het oog, eveneens is dit boek een van mijn favoriete Bachman verhalen.
In een dystopische wereld wordt elk jaar een lange marathon gelopen door honderd jongens (in het boek is geen enkel meisje aanwezig tijdens de loop en daar wordt ook geen reden voor gegeven dus ik vermoed dat dit meer ligt aan het tijdperk waarin het boek werd geschreven). Onder toezicht van en onder leiding van ‘de Majoor’ zetten deze enthousiaste en idealistische vrijwilligers zich in om deze loop aan te vatten. Er is een grote prijs te winnen aan het einde. Maar de loop komt met een grote kost, namelijk als je onder een bepaalde snelheid loopt of je stopt met lopen krijg je drie waarschuwingen en na de derde waarschuwing wordt je genadeloos afgeknald, zonder pardon en zonder mededogen. Er kan maar één winnaar zijn!
Aan het begin van de marathon verloopt alles redelijk vlekkeloos maar eens het eerste slachtoffer valt sijpelt de realiteit van het gevaar geleidelijk aan in. En vooral als sommige voor de minste reden een waarschuwing krijgen, dan slaat de angst om het hart. Zo’n waarschuwing kan terug kwijtgescholden worden als je een uur hebt gelopen. Maar als je met drie waarschuwingen rondloopt, treuzel je maar best niet te veel of heb je best geen krampen in de benen.
Tussen de jongens ontstaat vriendschap maar ook een vijandige sfeer. Er is de stille loper die zich nergens mee bemoeit, er is de volhouder, er is de protester, er is degene die instabiliteit wil creëren en dan is er jonge Ray Garraty, die ondanks het verdwijnen van zijn vader die kritiek had op het regime, toch deelneemt als een soort van erezaak. Maar Ray en zijn medelopers krijgen het moeilijk… want de marathon in Bachmans boek gaat niet over een afstand van maar 42,195 kilometer… nee, deze gaat door weer en wind, langs heuvel en dal honderden kilometers lang tot er maar één overblijft!
Dit boek is het resultaat mochten The Handmaid’s Tale en The Hunger Games een literair kindje hebben gebaard. (Hoewel dit boek er eerder was natuurlijk).
Voor wie interesse heeft: momenteel wordt dit boek verfilmd met onder andere Mark Hamill in de rol van de Majoor. Het is pas het tweede verhaal uit de bundel The Bachman Books dat een verfilming krijgt. The Running Man (Vlucht naar de Top) werd eerder met Arnold Schwarzenegger verfilmd en krijgt momenteel een remake met Glenn Powell in de hoofdrol.
Ik begrijp dat heel wat mensen die fan zijn van het werk van King niet altijd de verhalen die hij als Bachman uitbracht (en dan voornamelijk die uit deze bundel) niet altijd even hard appreciëren maar persoonlijk vind ik deze boeken heel sterk in opbouw en dit boek vooral is een heel grote studie in het volhardingsvermogen van de mens en hoever iemand in staat is te gaan, en wat de gevolgen daarvan zijn, om zijn leven te redden. En in hoeverre ben je bereid om je eigen leven op het spel te zetten om iemand anders te helpen? Lees het allemaal in De Marathon (The Long Walk).

And especially when some receive a warning for the slightest reason, fear grips the heart. Such a warning can be revoked if you manage to walk for an hour. Friendships form among the boys, but a hostile atmosphere also emerges. There is the silent runner who keeps to himself, the endurance runner, the protester, the one who tries to create instability, and then there is young Ray Garraty, who takes part as a matter of honor despite the disappearance of his father, who had criticized the regime. But Ray and his fellow runners soon find themselves struggling… because the marathon in Bachman’s book is not about covering a distance of just 42.195 kilometers—no, it goes on through wind and weather, over hills and valleys, for hundreds of kilometers, until only one remains.
This book is what you might get if The Handmaid’s Tale and The Hunger Games had a literary child together (although this book came first, of course).
For those who are interested: this book is currently being adapted into a film, with Mark Hamill among the cast in the role of the Major. It is only the second story from The Bachman Books to receive a film adaptation. The Running Man was previously adapted with Arnold Schwarzenegger and is currently getting a remake starring Glenn Powell.
I understand that many fans of King’s work do not always appreciate the stories he published under the Bachman name (especially those from this collection), but personally I find these books very strong in their structure. This particular book is a profound study of human endurance—how far someone is willing to go, and what the consequences are, to save their own life. And to what extent are you willing to put your own life at risk to help someone else? Read it all in The Marathon (The Long Walk).

I understand that many fans of King’s work do not always appreciate the stories he published under the Bachman name (especially those from this collection), but personally I find these books very strong in their structure. This particular book is a profound study of human endurance—how far someone is willing to go, and what the consequences are, to save their own life. And to what extent are you willing to put your own life at risk to help someone else? Read it all in The Marathon (The Long Walk).

Een zeer voorspelbaar boek aangezien je duidelijk weet dat de hoofdpersoon gaat winnen.. en het boek dus zeer moeilijk is om te blijven lezen omdat de spanning ervan af is. Vond het dan ook moeilijk om mij aan het boek te zetten en verder te lezen.

Two of the Bachman novels in one book!
Rage
Rage was a very intense story. I just couldn't put it down. It is also quite weird to read something that Stephen King has pulled back from publication.
Now that I have read Rage I can understand why Stephen King pulled it back. Because what happens is that Charlie Decker for some reason gets a lot of symphatie from his classmates. And they never turn against him. Except for a few individuals.
But overall the story itself is pretty good.

The Long Walk
Wow, this was a fantastic story! Absolutly phenomenal. It is just hartbreaking to see these characters who are technically hopeless seeing them giving everything they have to stay alive. But the sad part is is that it doesn't matter how much you try or howmany will-power you have, it sometimes just isn't enough. And only one can stil win.
The only thing that I didn't loved was that the ending felt quite rushed and was very vague.
This story is now in my top 5 Stephen King stories. That's for sure.

De Marathon blijft zo'n vet verhaal! Soms wel erg gory, dusdanig zo dat ik er misselijk van kon worden, maar zo meeslepend. Geweldig geschreven, zoals je kan verwachten van Stephen King, en nog steeds verassend (en beangstigend) actueel. Als voorbereiding op de verfilming die net is uitgekomen opnieuw gelezen en dat zal ik zeker blijven doen in de toekomst. Gewoon een erg goed verhaal! Geen baanbrekend fantastisch en emotioneel verhaal, en dus geen vijf sterren, maar eindeloos entertaining zeker.
Razernij pakte me daarentegen echt niet. Aan begonnen, maar niet afgemaakt. Vaag en onduidelijk geschreven en wel erg verouderd. Geen aanrader om Razernij als apart boek te kopen, De Marathon zeker wel!
