On her own in the Big Apple, Jenna Jay Scroggs can handle herself when trouble arises. But when she tries to rescue a horse, the passionate do-gooder ends up on a runaway Central Park carriage ride with a hunky stranger. With his sexy drawl and well-worn Levis, Beauregard Cates is doing his darnedest to make Jenna homesick for the small western town she's spent years trying to forget. And it's working: She's dangerously close to falling head over boot heels for the rugged rodeo star with hair the color of moonshine.
Beau came to the big city to escape his past and live life to the fullest. Yet the leggy blonde with eyes as blue as a western sky causes a real hitch in his giddy-up. So when the well-meaning folks of Bramble plot to bring Jenna home, Beau will need to convince her that she won't ever get Texas out of her blood - or one good-time, ever-lovin' cowboy out of her heart.

Spoiler Ahead This was book five in the "Deep in the Heart of Texas" series and although I gave this book 4 stars it had some annoying moments for me. In previous book we learned Beau had cancer and went through the horrendous treatment to get rid of it which not only changed the color of his hair to silver but also changed his outlook on life and not for the better. When the last test he's gotten showed something on the x-ray instead of sticking around and finding out if the cancer was back he decided to run and live hard and dangerously. When Ms. Millie one of the hens asks him to locate another Bramble native who ran from her problems to New York he's surprised at his reaction to the blonde skinny tomboy who isn't really his normal type. Jenna Jay never felt like she belonged in her over achiever dark haired family. Because she always felt like she never fit in she's always fought for the underdog which in her adult years turned into fighting for causes. She's confused when she gets an invitation from Millie to come back to Texas and become a hen. Neither Beau nor Jenna Jay had any intention of going back to Texas but that choice it taken away from them when they are kidnapped and find their destination to be Bramble and that the town had instigated the kidnapping. Beau and Jenna Jay were two people who did not want to be attracted to each other and fought it but there attraction and the busy bodies of the town made sure that didn't last for long. There initial meeting between Pastor Robbins and Marcy in the library was very funny. Pastor Robbins may be a pastor but he is still a man with carnal thoughts. Marcy has been known as the town tramp for most of her life and most of it her own making. Not having a father figure growing up she tried to fill that void with sleeping with lots of men. The poor man didn't know what hit him. Marcy had some serious demons she's always been fighting and it was very entertaining to watch the poor pastor struggle with a few of his own until he finally figured out what Marcy really needed and that it fell in line with what he needed also. There is also plenty of drama going on and a few misunderstandings that lead to unveiling some interesting details. Beau and Jenna have a lot of things to work through and a few obstacles that they must hurdle in order to be together. This was a good book it was well written like the other books in this series with no errors in grammar or spelling and well read as I listened to this book on audio. I am looking forward to listening to the next book in this series.
*girly sigh* I just love a cowboy. And Katie Lane can write some damn fine cowboys. There's just something about them that totally sucks me in. Flirting with Texas was a quite the time. It's fun and for the most part a light read. A little silly now and again and perfect for a good chuckle. Hell, I mean really the hero and the heroine were kidnapped...by a town.
I enjoyed both of the characters but sometimes Jenna's passion for so many causes was a bit too much for me. I did love seeing her grow as a character and liked that she wasn't a damsel in distress though. And Beau is just one cowboy I can't resist. He's sexy, fun loving, rocks some boxers like you wouldn't believe and under his charming outgoing personality is hiding some insecurities and longings that made me love him and his silver haired self even more.
I loved the dynamic between the two. They have that spit fire relationship where they just poke at each other. He riles her up and she secretly loves it. She gives it right back and he eats it up. Heat wise there's actually surprisingly little nekkid time for being set at a "hen house" though what's there is mighty nice.
Overall Flirting with Texas is a fun cowboy read that's light hearted and full of quirky small town life. There were some fairly minor complains on my end--like an over emphasis on some of the Southern drawl and parts I would have liked to see more fleshed out--but it didn't keep me from enjoying the overall story or wanting to read more from this crazy little world. It's one of those reads you can easily lose yourself in for a few hours and really makes for a wonderfully fun escape.
I love this series and this town! Even better this time around is a two-fer love story, with a secondary story edging in and around
We finally cross our Scroggs and Cates with Beau and Jenna Jay. It could have been a sob fest with Beau's cancer but luckily it was pushed back. It was a fun romp with some stubborn people and that secondary story, that was just sweet!
Maybe it is me, but the antics of the town are wearing thin for me as are the hens at the henhouse. In both cases a little goes a long way. I found the romance between Beau and Jenna Jay to me meh...instead I was more interested in what was going on between Marcy and the pastor, wish that would have been more of the main story.
Wow! What a crappy story!!! Huge disappointment for me. I hated Jenna. She's too much of an activist and frankly it was corny. I didn't like that Beauregard kept dogging her figure and saying how he liked more boobs and butt. His attraction to her jumped out of nowhere!
Flirting in Texas is the 5th book in Katie Lane’s inaugural Deep in the Heart of Texas series. This story features Beauregard “Beau” Cates whom we learned in the previous two books where he was a secondary character to his older brothers Billy and Brant’s romances is a world class flirt with a smile that can melt any woman’s panties. It’s something the author can’t seem to resist reminding us of on just about every page. So why not use it in the book’s title? The female lead in this story is Jenna Jay Scroggs, the youngest sister of Faith and Hope the female leads of the first two books in this series. Other than in the first book where we briefly met a somewhat antagonistic Jenna at a family dinner held to introduce Faith, oldest child Hope’s identical twin sister (whom until that point no one but her parents knew existed) to the family, Jenna hadn’t been mentioned in the next four books. She’s off at college and then living in NYC as the story opens. Jenna is not a flirt. Jenna is as one character describes her a firecracker like her older sister Hope without Hope’s need to make people happy. Jenna is a rebel always looking for a cause although late in the story it becomes a bit cloudy as to just exactly what her motivations are for always championing the underdog. For the majority of this book I was ready to give it a strong 4 to 4.5 star rating. Watching Jenna and Beau spar and take one step forward and two steps back as they struggle with their attraction to one another was fun. Jenna’s search to discover her real genealogy added a nice subplot to the story. Even though the author had Hope and Faith and their spouses out of town on a family vacation conveniently explaining the absence of Jenna’s sisters (and two of my favorite characters in this series) for most of the book their, BFF Shirleen who is married to Beau’s brother Billy got to fill in as a substitute older sister in a small but important role. And towards the end Hope, Faith and Elizabeth returned in small roles to support Jenna and we get to see how their new married lives are progressing. The secondary stories around Minnie and Marcy and even Starlet were entertaining with some exciting plot twists. So why as I hinted above did I not finish the book by one of my favorite authors giving it a strong 4 plus star rating? I could nitpick with little things like, whatever happened to Jenna’s BFF in NYC? Did she even get invited to the wedding? Jenna had a 4 year degree from Texas Tech so why was she working as a waitress in the Big Apple? How could Jenna have been so stubbornly insistent that she was still in love with her college sweetheart and first love Davy when he over and over again proved what a self-absorbed, selfish loser he was and wasn’t even faithful to her? That hardly seemed to fit her independent personality. Elizabeth the heroine of the previous book gives up her job as the town’s librarian to become a wife and mother after marrying Brant. Okay, but it’s now 2 years later and Bramble’s library is still being run by totally incompetent volunteers who can’t even check books in and out? We never learn how Beau plans on earning a living as they ride off into their happily ever after. Does Beau continue his pro bull riding career, join his brothers company, run Miss Hattie”s? But these are minor things I know only a nitpicker like myself would be bothered about. No, the biggest reason this book dropped a full star in my grading was the final chapters and the epilogue. Jenna’s disappointing reaction when she finally learns the big secret Beau has been keeping from her was disappointing and seemed completely out of character for the strong caring woman she was to me. And Beau’s actions in order to supposedly be able to keep a big surprise from Jenna seemed ridiculously poorly thought out to the point that anyone not named Kenny Gene would realize how thoughtlessly cruel it was to Jenna. And then one of my favorite pet peeves is the epilogue seems to end with a minor cliff hanger. If I’m enjoying a series I don’t need a tease to get me to buy the next book. So while I enjoyed this book there were a few things towards the end that for me took a little of the shine off of it.
The first story about Jenna and Beau. Both run away from their family. Jenna run away with her boyfriend because of her family can't accept her boyfriend. Beau run away because he doesn't want to repeat his experience being a cancer patient. They where kidnap by their town folk. A few day in a camper with a hunk in a camper sure can get any girl feeling hot inside. Their get more interesting from page to page.
The second story is about a town slut and a Pastor. The Pastor just want to help Marcy so she would not be a prostitute. When he knew the real Marcy behind the tittle slut. He fall in love with her. their story is very little but still interesting.
This is another wonderful book about the characters in Bramble Tx. Jenna and Beau were in NY when they kidnapped back to Bramble. The adventures of the trip back and the time there. Hatties hens are funny and love all that goes on throughout this town. This book is one that keeps you wanting to continue reading and enjoying this town. Love these books and all the characters in them.
This was a delightful story about Beau Cates and Jenna Jay Scruggs and the people of Bramble, Texas. Small towns think they have a right to step in when they think someone is making a mistake and that is how Beau and Jenna got locked in a camper from New York City to Bramble, Texas. You will smile and even laugh a little and you will enjoy their story.
I don't think this series works for me. Again, I found this OTT and cheesy/silly. I also didn't really like either the hero or heroine. DNF and unhauled.
Flirting with Texas is the 5th book in the Deep in the Heart of Texas series by Katie Lane. And although it's not my favorite of the series it was very enjoyable.
Jenna Jay Scroggs may have run away to the Big City, but she is still the tough Texas girl that can take care of herself. Turning herself into a real life super hero Jenna Jay constantly finds trouble and gives it her all to right it, which is exactly what has gotten her in her current predicament. Trying to resuce the runaway horse and carriage brings her face to face with a silver haired cowboy that she can't get out of her mind. Jenna Jay has no way of knowing how much her life is about to get out of control. Not only, does this sexy cowboy threaten to steal her heart, but the folks of Bramble, Texas are happy to join in and contribute to the chaos.
Beauregard Cates has a death wish. He would argue this, however. After his cancer diagnosis, Beau did all the right things and that may not have been enough. His latest scans show that the cancer may be back and he's done with chemo and living the life of the dying. He's decided to take life by the balls and experience it to the fullest. If this means taking huge risks, so be it. He refuses to have regrets when it's all said and done. When he's asked to check on one Jenna Jay Scroggs while in New York City he reluctantly agrees, thinking his time is better spent doing anything else other than playing babysitter. Little does he know how much the beautiful blonde spitfire is about to turn his life upside down. She makes him feel more alive than he's felt in years.
This was such a tale of both characters battling demons and accepting what life has thrown at them. Beau broke my heart. For the first time in his life he's in love and he's stuck with the terrible decision of professing his love and saddling Jenna Jay with a possibly dying husband or keeping his mouth shut and enjoying what time he has left with her. I loved Jenna! She tried so hard to help the underdog every chance she got and had no idea that she sometimes made it worse. She never felt quite like she belonged with her crazy family, yet they loved her and she loved them.
"Life isn't hell; it's a journey. A wonderful, breathtaking journey. Yes, there will be bumps along the way. And more than a few times, you'll find yourself down in a ditch that looks so deep you think you'll never get out. Some folks like to stay in the ditch. They like to moan and groan about how hard life is and blame all their troubles on other people. Little do they know that in the time they spent complainin' they could have been out of the ditch and standing on top of the mountain."
I so missed the crazy townspeople of Bramble, Texas and the Hens. Their antics never cease to make me laugh out loud.
This book was provided to me from NetGalley.com in exchange for my honest review.
Katie Lane is among my favorites when it comes to contemporary westerns. Her stories are light fun and always amusing. Beau and Jenna were such a cute couple. Jenna is a tomboy who never really felt like she fit in anywhere. When her and her parents got in a tiff over her choice in boyfriend she ran off to New York with him, where she has been ever since. Beau is running from his own demons. A cancer survivor, with a suspicious mass looming over his head he is determined to run as far and as fast rom Texas as he can. If he can’t have the one thing he wants; he’s going to spend what is left of his life “living life to its fullest” aka running away from his family.
The Hens send Beau after Jenna claiming she is a “Hen” and that they need her address. When Jenna and Beau meet it is memorable to say the least. It involves her kicking his a$$! Jenna is feisty as hell and a crusader. Always championing the underdog she is always getting herself into trouble. Beau is an expert in getting himself out of trouble, but the minute he meets Jenna he realizes that some trouble you just don’t want to get out of. When Beau and Jenna are kidnapped by the crazy town of Bramble, Texas a wild ride ensues. Both Jenna and Beau take a journey to self-discovery that leaves them both a bit uncomfortable. As separate characters I loved both Jenna and Beau. Jenna is that go getter with a kind heart, she’s a champion of the underdog and you just can’t help yourself. She has such a big heart you love her almost instantly. Beau we met before and I don’t know about you, but I fell in love with him in the last book. He survived cancer and now he is determined to live life. He’s more than a little aimless; but when your future is so uncertain I think it is almost a natural feeling to try to pack everything you can in while you can. He’s been wandering the world for two years not really caring and avoiding his family. As couple, I like Beau and Jenna even more. They are just so cute together. I don’t even know what specifically makes them such a cute couple, but they just are! Beau is happy go lucky and laid back, Jenna is a go getter and somehow they enhance each other, plus their attraction is explosive. At the end when Jenna and Beau are “fighting” it had me cracking up! Jenna was definitely making Beau fight for it!
The only issue I had with this book was the Marcy plotline, it wasn’t very believable and it distracted from Jenna and Beau. I wanted more time with Beau and Jenna and less with Marcy, but I guess it had its place. What I liked with this book, as with the rest of the books in the series is the town and all the townspeople. Like Susan Mallory’s Fools Gold series, the town is almost its own character. The towns’ people are more than a little bit crazy but it’s so entertaining! I very much enjoyed this book!
Rating: 4.5
*This book was provided to me through NetGalley for an honest review no other compensation was provided.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, although there are moments in these books where the dialogue is just too southern, sickly sweet. If it weren't for those moments, honestly these books would rate right up there with my favorite contemporary romances. As it is though, they are just an enjoyable read and I love that they take place in an area of the country that I know very well because it's home...West Texas which I call home.
This book features Beau and I've been dying for his book. I love a wounded hero and he's already had one round with cancer with information that it may be back. Faced with mortality, he definitely qualifies as a wounded hero...just trying to live his life to the fullest...while avoiding his family, knowing how much his death will hurt them. My heart hurt for him because before his cancer the one thing he wanted most was to have a family. But the cancer scare took that away from him. He doesn't think he can have that anymore because he honestly is sure the cancer is back.
Jenna has been living in NYC with her rocker boyfriend. She's a do-gooder...always trying to improve everyone else's life whether they want it or not. She's been with Davy, her boyfriend, for three years, although they don't have much of a real relationship. She is at an impasse with her mother in Bramble and hasn't been home for several years. The town doesn't like that so they decide to do something about that. It's just by coincidence that Beau is with her when they kidnap her, returning another lost Bramble native back into the fold.
I liked everything about the story with Jenna and Beau. They were both such great characters. I've already talked about how much I love Beau's back-story. From the fact that he's 28 years old, but his hair turned grey from his chemo, to the fact that he owns the Henhouse, to how absolutely devoted he is to the hens. The intertwining of his and Minnie's stories...LOVE!
Then there's Jenna who's never felt like she belonged. She's a tomboy and a blonde in a family of small, petite brunettes. She's athletic and more masculine than a lot of men, but with that comes mile long, toned legs and I loved how much Beau loved those legs. They have some great scenes where he explores and even fantasizes about them.
There's a side story in this book with Marla (a woman who's trying to shore herself to be a hen because she needs the money) and the local preacher, Sean, who's a transplanted California boy. I loved the first scene with them in the library. The story delved a little too deeply into the southern whore and the preacher (stickly-sweet at moments with the southern dialogue and phrasing) in the middle of their story, but I liked it again by the end.
Overall, this was an enjoyable book. If you can overlook moments in the dialogue where things get to be too much, I promise you a book with characters and story that definitely made for an afternoon's enjoyable escape.
Once you come under the radar of Ms Hatties Henhouse and the folks of Bramble, TX beware the matchmaking that will ensue.
In this latest installment in the series we get two couple that are ensnared in Ms Millie’s web of meddling.
Beauregard Cates and Jenna Jay Scroggs – In previous book we learned Beau had cancer and went through the horrendous treatment to get rid of it which not only changed the color of his hair to silver but also changed his outlook on life and not for the better. When the last test he’s gotten showed something on the x-ray instead of sticking around and finding out if the cancer was back he decided to run and live hard and dangerously. When Ms Millie asks him to locate another Bramble native who ran from her problems to New York he’s surprised at his reaction to the blonde skinny tomboy who isn’t really his normal type. Jenna Jay never felt like she belonged in her over achiver dark haired family. Because she always felt like she never fit in she’s always fought for the underdog which in her adult years turned into fighting for causes. She’s confused when she gets an invitation from Millie to come back to Texas and become a hen. Neither Beau nor Jenna Jay had any intention of going back to Texas but that choice it taken away from them when they are kidnapped and find their destination to be Bramble and that the town had instigated the kidnapping. Beau and Jenna Jay were two people who did not want to be attracted to each other and fought it but there attraction and the busy bodies of the town made sure that didn’t last for long.
Pastor Robbins and Marcy – There initial meeting in the library was very humorous. Pastor Robbins may be a pastor but he is still a man with carnal thoughts. Marcy has been known as the town tramp for most of her life and most of it her own making. Not having a father figure growing up she tried to fill that void with sleeping with lots of men. When she applies for a job at Ms Hatties Henhouse she mistakenly thinks it really is a house of ill repute and that she is apply for a position of one of the “girls”. Even though she thinks badly of herself she can’t quite bring herself to get in the mood to take her first customer so she goes to Pastor Robbins with a proposition to be her first customer. Yes you read that right she went to a pastor and asked him for sex. The poor man didn’t know what hit him. Marcy had some serious demons she’s always been fighting and it was very entertaining to watch the poor pastor struggle with a few of his own until he finally figured out what Marcy really needed and that it fell in line with what he needed also.
While there was plenty of laughs from the Hen’s and the town folks there was also a lot of serious issues many of the characters had to deal with. The author did a great job of balancing these out to provide another entertaining read.
Lane delivers another madcap Texan romance. As usual, this novel is lots of fun but it was a little disjointed to start with – lots of different threads heading off in different directions. Beauregard Cates has been charged by Miss Millie of the Hen House no less to find Jenna Jay who abandoned Bramble in favour of New York. Sparks fly when Beau and Jenna Jay meet despite him favouring busty ladies and her being in a relationship with a deadbeat musician. Things take a decidedly unusual turn when the well-meaning citizens of Bramble decide to bring Jenna home.
We’ve watched Beau go through a lot in the previous Deep in the Heart of Texas novels. He’s had to battle cancer put a huge strain on his relationships with others and led to the eventual breakdown of his marriage. When his last scan revealed a mass, he made the conscious decision not to find out if the cancer was back but rather try to make the most of his life. For the last few years he’s drifted wherever the mood has taken him. His latest passion is rodeo riding, as long as the competitions take place outside Texas and away from his family. He feels out of step with them and being around them reminds him of the happiness he may never regain. No matter how crazy the plot gets, Lane still treats this aspect of the novel sensitively.
Our heroine is Jenna Jay Scroggs, Texan transplant and saver of humanity. Jenna has a very strong moral compass and is constantly championing a cause. She can come across as controlling, simply because she thinks she knows best, but she does genuinely care about others. The woman has so much energy; I got a little tired just reading about her antics.
She sacrificed her home town and family for Davy but all he seemed to appreciate was the fact she supports him financially. I wonder if the original fascination with him was that he needed ‘fixing up’ and was content to let her try. Needless to say, her budding relationship with Beau is far more balanced as he challenges her and actively supports her in her endeavours. He needs some of her direction and passion for living, while she needs to let go a bit more. The two fight their attraction to one another but with Miss Millie in the mix, you know it is only a matter of time.
Miss Millie as usual steals every scene she’s in. She has quite a reputation for good-hearted meddling and when she’s not creating opportunities for Beau and Jenna to get together, she is fixing up Pastor Robbins and Marcy. I’m a bit on the fence with the side-plot as although it showed a less tolerant side of the town, it took away from the main romance.
The humour as usual shines through and although things were a little scatty at first, I enjoyed spending time back in Bramble.
Plenty of humor, a big dose of down home charm and an eccentric cast of characters are a winning combination in Flirting with Texas. Katie Lane’s newest release in her fabulous Deep in the Heart of Texas series takes readers back to Bramble, TX where Jenna Jay Scroggs and Beauregard “Beau” Cates fight their way to happily ever after.
Jenna left Bramble and her family behind when she moved to New York City with her rocker boyfriend Davy. At odds with her family over her relationship with Davy, their disagreement has led to a yearlong estrangement. Miss Minnie (from the infamous Miss Hattie’s Henhouse) has devised a plan to bring her home and as a favor to her, Beau agrees to track down Jenna while he’s in NYC for a bull riding event. The sparks are soon flying between Beau and Jenna and they have their hands full fighting their attraction (and matchmakers) when they are kidnapped and taken back to Bramble.
Beau and Jenna are wonderful characters and I really enjoyed them together as a couple. Jenna is passionate about her causes and a staunch defender of the underdog. She loves her family, but she does not quite fit in with them. While she is satisfied with her life in New York, meeting Beau makes Jenna a little nostalgic for the family and small town she walked away from.
Beau is charming and good natured but behind that big old grin he flashes lies a pretty complicated past. A cancer survivor, Beau is living life to the fullest as he travels from place to place. Jenna is NOT his type, but he does not let this deter him from pursuing the leggy blond.
Neither Beau nor Jenna plan on staying long in Bramble, but leaving is more difficult than they imagined. An overheard conversation takes Jenna by surprise and she begins digging into her past. An accidental discovery by Beau about someone close to him leads to a surprising realization about a past decision of his.
The romance between Beau and Jenna is sweet and sexy. There is plenty of chemistry between them and the sexual tension between them is positively combustible. Their relationship is on again/off again for much of the story as they deal with their personal issues but they do share some sizzling hot encounters.
In Flirting with TexasKatie Lane once again brings the town of Bramble and its inhabitants vibrantly to life. Fun, flirty and thought-provoking, this engaging romance will delight old and new fans of the Deep in the Heart of Texas series and leave them eagerly anticipating the next installment.
I fell in love with Beau who we first met in Catch Me a Cowboy. So I’ve been waiting for his story. Well, maybe not, since he doesn’t end up with me. Okay fine... I love the guy and I want him to be happy. I just wasn’t sure about Jenna Jay.
Beau is this young, easy going, soft on the eyes cowboy. He’s a cancer survivor and is afraid the cancer has returned. He doesn’t want to go through all the treatments again so he leaves town and chooses not find out the results of the tests. If the cancer has returned, Beau just wants to live his life to the fullest. Of course, this goes against what his family wants.
Jenna Jay Scroggs is different. She’s different from the other members of her family, but she’s also spunky like they are. Jenna isn’t what you expect her to be. She feels like she doesn’t belong in Bramble and moves away to New York. When the “Hens” get involved, Jenna’s family differences get mistaken for something else entirely. I will admit that no matter how hard I tried to not like Jenna, she won me over.
Beau has been gone from Bramble and his family for going on two years. He’s in New York and Head Hen Minnie, yes at one point Minnie was a hen at The Henhouse a place of ill repute, asked him to check on Jenna and get her address. One thing leads to another and the sparks between Beau and Jenna are JUST getting started. I’m amazed at how great these two are together. They’re each strong-willed people who need someone just as strong and stubborn to be their partner.
I’m a huge fan of Katie Lane because I KNOW she’s always going to make me laugh. Of course, Flirting with Texas is no different. The laughing started immediately with the first sentence. I mean really, how can you NOT laugh at a guy being on the streets of New York and getting mistaken as being the naked cowboy. Or how about a town kidnapping two people. Yes, there are several people in the town of Bramble missing a couple of marbles shy of a whole bag. But I loved the journey Beau and Jenna take in this book. You get a front seat to watching these two grow as people, individually, and as a couple.

Flirting with Texas is the second book I have had the pleasure to read by Katie Lane. I chose to read this book because I love western stories and who doesn’t love a hot cowboy?!? I know I sure do. This was a fabulous story that was full of romance, mystery, and drama, and did I mention the hot cowboy?
Jenna Jay Scroggs is one strong, independent, feisty young lady who I totally enjoyed reading about. Jenna thinks she has her life all planned out until she meets up with Beauregard Cates, who just happens to be from her home town. The relationship between Jeanna and Beau is hilarious from the beginning. I loved to laugh when I am reading and the things that happen when these two are together are just too much fun! I loved it!
There is also plenty of drama going on and a few misunderstandings that lead to unveiling some interesting details. Beau and Jenna have a lot of things to work through and a few obstacles that they must hurdle in order to be together.
One of my very favorite parts of the story are how Jenna and Beau end up in their hometown of Bramble, I’m not going to spoil the story by giving you any details. This was an interesting twist to the story though and I really enjoyed it. I love small towns and how the whole town kind of works together, also everyone knows everything that is going on.
This is book number five in the Deep in the Heart of Texas series by Katie Lane. I have not read the other four in the series and I didn’t feel like I was missing any major details. So I think it is safe to say that you can read this book and fallow along just fine if you haven’t read the rest of the series. I do know after reading Flirting with Texas I sure would not mind reading the rest of the series and I look forward to reading more work by Katie Lane in the future.
If you are like me and enjoy contemporary western romances I think you will enjoy this book.
**Thanks to NetGalley and Forever Books for providing me with the fifth book in Katie Lane's Deep in the Heart of Texas series**
Jenna Jay Scroggs is a tough and passionate woman, who stands up for what she believes is right and who can handle herself in the Big Apple, where she has moved from Texas to be with her musician boyfriend Davy. Jenna Jay keeps running into a handsome cowboy named Beauregard Cates while going around the city, working on her many "projects"--from trying to get the local drug dealer to stay away from her neighborhood to showing the world how overworked the horses in Central Park are to trying to get a supermarket mogul to charge the same prices in the city as he does in New Jersey.
One day, Jenna Jay and Beau are kidnapped on the streets of New York--seemingly by someone who is angry with Jenna for one of her projects. Instead, they are taken to Jenna's hometown of Bramble, Texas to Miss Hattie's Henhouse, a former house of ill repute that has been turned into a bed and breakfast(--or has it?!) Jenna Jay and Beau grow to care about each other--but is Beau a man who will stick around the only place that Jenna Jay cares to call home?
I enjoyed a lot about this book--the hens at Miss Hattie's are always up to something and hilarity ensues, Kenny Gene and Twyla are always good for a laugh (will they EVER get married?), and the chemistry between the two main characters was good.
However, at first, I couldn't really get into the book--there were too many characters to remember from previous books or to learn for the first time that I couldn't really follow the story. Also, there was just too. much. going. on. There were story lines with two of the hens at Miss Hattie's, with the pastor and Marcy, and others along with the main characters. It felt like because there were so many characters, the reader didn't really get to know any of them. Sometimes less is better.
Overall, though, a satisfying and funny read from Katie Lane.
Flirting With Texas by Katie Lane has us once again visiting Bramble, Texas. Bramble is that type atruegemawardof Texas town that you would just love to be a part of, and I love visiting often through Katie’s books!!
Beauregard Cates hasn’t been back to Bramble in years. When he left he decided to live his life to the fullest until his time ran out. He wasn’t going to fight the cancer again, so he didn’t want to know if it was back officially or not. When he is asked to look in on a woman while in New York for the rodeo, he never thought he would meet the one he couldn’t stay away from or be kidnaped back to Bramble.
Jenna Jay Scroggs is a woman on a mission to make the world just a little bit better. She doesn’t care if she has to protest or secretly investigate to do it. But sometimes her actions get her in a bit of hot water. So when she sees the sexy Beau following her, she takes no chances that he might be one of the peeps she has upset. She didn’t leave Bramble on the best of terms with her family, so when she is kidnapped right along with Beau she is none too happy to find out that the destination was Bramble.
These two have explosive chemistry, make you just down right laugh, and then you add in the Hens of Miss Hattie’s it is a recipe for a great book!! This is one of those series that just are heartwarming, but have quite a bit of steamy sexiness to keep you reading book after book! I love that the actual town and the Hens of Miss Hattie’s are such a big part of the story. As long as Katie keeps going back to Bramble she will have me right there with her. I can’t recommend this book and series more! Hope y’all love it as much as I have. :)
My thanks to Forever Books & Netgalley for my complimentary copy of this book.
I've only got a few things to say about this book. It was an absolute joy to read & I enjoyed every minute of it. I love the humor that Katie Lane brings to her books. Flirting With Texas was a delightful story that united cowboy Beauregard Cates & Jenna Jay Scroggs, crusader to every cause. Their romantic relationship gets off to a rocky start & with some pretty hilarious scenes. They had themselves some wild escapades & ended up getting kidnapped by some bumbling good old boys & carted all the way back to Bramble. Next they are reunited with the wily hens at Miss Hatties Henhouse as Miss Minnie tries her hand at matchmaking.
This book was just fun to read. Sure, it did have some touching scenes. Jenna & Beau have some issues to work through. Things got turned around a few times. But mostly I smiled the whole way through. It's got Katie Lane's own brand of humor. Larger than life characters carrying on with some outrageous antics. Down home humor. The right touch of suspense at the end. Even with the climactic throwdown with the gun toting thugs , I kept right on smiling as the ladies auxillary club helped to get the drop on the bad guys.
I enjoyed the sweet romantic part of the story most of all. A hero who was running from something, desperate for every moment of life. And a heroine who needed help finding the courage to fight for her most important cause yet.
In case you haven't guessed, I like my romance with a touch of humor. It doesn't need to be so dramatic every time. That's one of the reasons I enjoyed this book so much. It made me laugh & it made me feel good. Enough said. I loved it & can't wait for my next visit back to Bramble .

This is a Deep In the Heart of Texas series book, #5. Jenna Jay Scroggs is from the small town of Bramble, Texas. She has moved to New York though to make a life for herself and to get away from the family of success stories. She has always felt that she has fallen short when compared to her brother and sisters. She always seems to be in some kind of trouble or fighting for some cause and the life suits her just fine. She is also dating a band member whose performances are few and far between and who doesn't seem to have much more desire to do anything else. Where everyone else sees it what a lost cause her boyfriend is she doesn't, but he fits in with her fight for lost causes. She rather quickly finds herself in a carriage pulled by a runaway horse with a very handsome Texas stranger.
Beauregard Cates, otherwise known as Beau is out in New York for a rodeo circuit show and to escape his past and live his life to the fullest. While in New York, he made some promises to people back home that he would try to find Jenna Jay and persuade her to make her way back home. Things aren't going so well for his own cause, until he finds himself locked up in another runaway trailer of sorts when he and Jenna Jay are kidnapped.
Very funny story about two people that need to learn to come to terms with who they are, and learn from their pasts. They both discover how much the people around them really love them and how far they would go to bring them home to their rightful homes. A heartwarming, humorous, and enjoyable read! (
When a book starts with "give me a twenty, Marty. Joan got a picture with the Naked Cowboy, and I'm not leaving New York City until I get one" -you know its going to be another great KL book! And I was not disappointed as she took us from NYC to Bramble, TX and showed us once again how this crazy town puts a strangle hold on the people it loves and will not let go! LOL I love the interaction with the families and the siblings. 'Beau hedged. "I just didn't want to disrupt your life." Billy reached over to smack him in the back of the head, knocking his cowboy hat off. "I'm your brother you idiot. You disrupt my life by leaving not by coming back" ' Katie has such a way with words and makes me feels the emotions of her characters to the point that I feel they are friends and family of my own! Their insight can be so spot on!! 'Minnie snorted. "You're all about what's right and wrong aren't you Jenna Jay? To you, black is black and white is white. But sometimes there are gray areas. Sometimes the right thing can mean doing something that someone else might think is wrong." ' This book also had a heart warming secondary story - Pastor Sean Robbins & Marcy Henderson. Loved how they pushed the limits of what a pastor should do before marriage but also kept the integrity that is due a man of the cloth. This was a grade A read and KL will keep me coming back for more of her DITHOT series - over and over again!! Most poignant line in this story came from Beau "But we're not talking about love. We're talking about need. And need is a much stronger emotion than love. We need things we can't live without - air, water, food."
This book is one of my favorites in the Deep in the Heart of Texas Series by Katie Lane. I give it a 4.75. I have to admit, during the first couple of chapters, I got a little confused, as so much going was going on, with lots of characters to keep straight. Once I got my thoughts in order, I really enjoyed this book. Katie Lane's books always have lots of characters, and the folks from Bramble, TX, are "Characters"! Jenna Jay is the sister of Bramble's most Famous Twins, Hope and Faith. Jenna Jay is feisty with a heart of gold. Beau is one of the "Hot" Cate's Brothers. They meet in Manhattan, which does seem odd, as these two stand out, even in NYC. The relationship between these two can't really move forward until they deal with their personal demons. It was interesting to see how the author dealt with Beau's health struggles. It certainly added another level to the plot, as it not a topic usually explored in a "steamy" romance novel. You get double the romance, as there is also a love story between the Pastor and a "Girl from the Wrong Side of the Track". The "Hens" are back, which makes the story oh, so entertaining. This book gives the reader many laughs,a tear or two, plenty of romance, and even a hostage situation that adds mystery to this plot and the next book to come. The only reason, I gave it 4.75 stars and not a solid 5, is because, I would have really liked more updates on the past couples in this Series. For example, Lane only mentioned Hope, Faith, Slate and Colt in passing. I would say, to get the most enjoyment out of Flirting with Texas, you really need to read the Series in order.
This is the 5th book in the Deep in the Heart of Texas series. I think you can read this as a stand alone but you might want to at least read the blurbs of the other books to help you connect the characters if you haven't read any of the previous books. I have not read them all but that didn't take away from the enjoyment when reading this. Jenna Jay is a kick ass kind of Texas girl transplanted in New York City for a while. Beau is there looking her up so Miss Minnie can invite her to the Hen House. A place he owns. A funny series of events lead them to meet and not long after they are both kidnapped by a couple of the citizens of Bramble Texas to take them home. Jenna had a disagreement with her parents on her choice of boyfriend and left town for NY and the folks of Bramble want her back so she can make up with her family. Next thing you know Beau and Jenna are mixed up together at the Hen House and the possible mystery about Jenna's background. Beau had a fight with cancer before and when it became a possibility that the cancer was back he took off and has wandered around for 2 years. Although all kind of problems come up either between the two of them or other things both Jenna and Beau keep coming back to each other. This was a fun book. Katie Lane brings humor to her characters with her fun dialogue and good ole boy attitudes. Some of the town folk can get on your last nerve but that's what small town can be like and everyone accepts that for what it is. Very enjoyable read if you like your cowboys and kick ass heroines.
