Sandra’s sister is dying. Doctors say nothing can be done, but she refuses to give up hope. She has depleted all their resources searching for a cure, when a little bird whispers in Sandra’s ear about secret worlds, gates, and the keepers who protect them. A dragon gatekeeper, who hoards magical treasure within his volcano home in Japan, possibly owns an item capable of curing her sister.
Gates choose their keepers, and Koishi thinks his did an excellent job in picking him. Not many dare to cross, and none who try survive. However, one tiny human female with either the courage of an army or the intelligence of a gnat has arrived on the island asking for him. Curious, he waits for the locals to steer her to his human servant—actually him, in man form.
Let the games begin…
CONTENT WARNING: Goblins, mayhem, and sushi await you with hot dragon sex and Koishi’s odd sense of humor.
Annie Nicholas hibernates in the rural, green mountains of Vermont where she dreams of different worlds, heroes, and heroines. When spring arrives the stories pour from her, in hopes to share them with the masses one day.
Mother, daughter, wife are some of the hats she happily wears while trudging after her cubs through the hills and dales. The four seasons an inspiration and muse.
Different spin on dragons with Koishi being the gatekeeper to another realm. I enjoyed his warped sense of humor and general tomfoolery. Sandra was a pretty good heroine as well. I liked her motives for seeking out the dragon. Cute HEA ending.
This paranormal romance is a great read for any shifter, fantasy or fellow dragon lover out here. There’s humor (I laughed quite frequently), action, magic, adventure, romance and a hot dragon shifter all in a new world for us all to escape with and enjoy!
Sandra is beautiful, brave, strong and very desperate in the worst way to find a cure for her sister’s illness, she’s the last family she has left and will do anything to make her well again. After spending a lot of time and money, she finally finds a chance at a possible cure and travels very far to obtain it. Now that she’s there, she must try and communicate in an unfamiliar language, smile at rudeness when she really wants to frown and decide what she wants for herself in the future, for love has its hold on her heart and it’s squeezing tight.
Koishi is a loner; all of his kind is this way, especially Guardians of the gates. He only has interest in his job and his treasures. That’s until the day he meets the intriguing and beautiful American, Sandra and gets very foreign urges within and shockingly actually wishes he no longer had to answer to the call of the gate.
I love the world Annie has created for us all and hope she plans on giving us more of this duet!
It says the dragon gatekeeper's place is set in Japan. Please have Japanese culture? (Or some references?)
3.5 fiery stars!
It was a great story at the start! I could see the dusty scenery, feel for the characters, and flip through the (kindle) pages quite quickly.
Then it slowly began to become a little too underdeveloped after the middle half. The characters made their choices a little too quickly, I couldn't feel as much for them, and I didn't flip as fast through the pages.
It's a good story, but a little too rushed towards the middle and end.
I LOVED this book. This is true-to-form Annie Nicholas writing; captivating, steamy, funny, descriptive, action-packed and an ending full of happy.
Sandra is definitely a no-nonsense heroine. She doesn't take any guff from Koshi, and she stops at nothing to complete her quest.
Koishi cracked me up to no end. Not in a slapstick kind of way, but a "I'm a zillion-year-old dragon and I've earned the right to screw with people" kind of way.
The ending was definitely happy, and this was one of those books I wish was way longer. I couldn't get enough, and I am a HUGE forever-fan of Annie's!
It was funny! And touching! and I want a sequel. The ending was rushed.... I think she just might need to work on endings because the other book I read had an abrupt ending too...
I would like to thank Bewitching Book Tours for allowing me to host this review on my blog. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a quick, fast-paced read that kept me reading from the first page till the last. Having my own sister who is sick and battling for her life, I can totally relate to Sandra. Would I do anything I could for my sister to make sure she would be healthy? Absolutely. Face down a dragon? Without a doubt. Yes, because of the connection, I did cry a little at times for Sandra and her sister. And I could feel the arrogance of Koishi, after all, he is a dragon. I think he has every right to be arrogant. But there were imes when I thought he needed to be brought down just a notch by Sandra. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and hope to be able to read the next in the series soon.
Ok I'm gonna admit that the first thing that attracted me to this book was the Japanese name as a title since I have a kind of crush on anything Japanese XD but after reading the summary of this book I'm attracted to it more and more
- I liked the heroine and her intense determination to do what she must and it shows that she's a woman with a strong backbone for doing what she did ^^
- The hero was kinda cute XD he's always playing jokes since he has lived like forever and with nothing new to do
- I liked the pull the hero felt for the heroine and how he couldn't stay away oh and it was the best when he was always so protective of her XD
- I liked all the things the hero did for the heroine his actions were so cute XD
A quick, fun read with a Dragon/Gatekeeper on an island in Japan and a woman on a mission to save her younger sister. Sandra´s heard rumours about a magical item who could heal anything, and with her sister terminal ill, she sees no other solution than to travel to the island and meet the Dragon. Another great read from Annie Nicholas with shifters and smutty fluff.
This story was really cute and I was enamored of Koishi’s warped sense of humor—since it mainly reminded me of my own. Something’s went a little too easily, but heck I got the feeling that this was supposed to be a happy story so they weren’t so bad. The only thing I will say is that the relationship between them grew a wee bit too fast, but that happens a lot in this genre. It made me laugh, it gave me bubbly happy feelings while I read it, and also it had dragons ... duh. Dragons usually make a story better.
Purch Amazon Jan. 24, 2017 Koishi (GateKeepers, #1) by Annie Nicholas I am going to say this one is a New Adult Paranormal Romance. It was good but not great for me. The 2 main characters were very hard for me to relate to. A lot of areas seemed jumpy.
4.5 Stars. This book totally surprised me. It had charm, wit, laugh-aloud moments, hot sex, dragons and dwarves. The story was well executed and the technical details left nothing to complain about, however the joy of this book was it's unexpected, down to earth humour. Loved it.
I really loved this book. It was entertaining and funny read. I hope there will be a few more like this one. Good start to a delightful series. Highly recommend if you like dragons and the paranormal.
haha i read this because i was bored and i liked the dragon element but honestly this book is just fluff. don't expect plot development or character depth or anything-- it's a really a simple book and the characters are just ok; therefore, this is a very just ok read. even if you don't read it, you're not missing out on much
My Lady Danu has bid me thank thee for the honor done her when thou didst submit thy novel, Koishi, for her review. In this new endeavor of hers, she is learning much about this plane, but feels she will never fully understand parts of it. However, she finds this new technology of e-books fascinating, providing an immediacy she wishes to share with her offspring. They, though, seem determined to remain hidebound – no pun intended.
She wishes me to convey to thee, firstly, that she has long been a reader of thy works and in this story she reaped a rare and very unexpected reward – she sees in the writing thy growth and development into authorial maturity. Please accept her metaphorical accolades. She regrets that the laws governing the separation between thy plane and hers make it impossible to provide a more tangible demonstration of her pleasure in thy growth.
My Lady Danu acknowledges her openness to a charge of hubris in her assessment of thy growth but she refuses to allow that to concern her. My Lady has read much of thy work – beginning in 2009 with the publication of The Omegas, the first in the Vanguard series. Between then and now she noted a growing depth and deftness of not just thy prose and use of language, but also in the complexity of thy characters and smooth glide of thy plotting. The unevenness of skill present in thy early work is not encountered in this novella.
The Goddess Danu was surprised by the risks taken in this story, though they may be seen as small risks. To pen a main character – Koishi – who in the first page openly acknowledges he eats small dogs whilst still alive and loves them, is somewhat unusual. Yet, in the development of Kioshi’s character arc he is clearly likeable and assured. He is a mix of the whimsical and sardonic, the Other and the humanly sympathetic. In My Lady Danu’s opinion the wit and humor, as much self-deprecating as it is teasing, is what carries Kioshi beyond and above – untying him from the potential accusation of an evil, heartless dragon shifter who abuses small animals by sending them to other dragons as a gift and eating them as a preferred snack – and still alive when munched.
The heroine interested My Lady Danu as well. It would be easy to see her as weak and timid, on top of being a poor sailor whose first appearance on the stage is her heaving her guts up, and a somewhat naïve American traveling to Japan – the first time she left not just her country but also her small town. Intrepid and determined, she is as much a charming heroine as she is a chick emerging from her shell (and isn’t it well that Koishi believes eating winged animals, even if flightless, is unethical. Does he see them as kin?) By the end of the story, Sandra is a fierce and intrepid warrior; both in fighting for her happily ever after with Koishi and in helping him defend his gate.
This story is light, humorous and a very quick read. It is entertainment. In passing it seemed, according to the Goddess Danu, Koishi's demand for Sandra's trust, even as he views her as a toy, became more repetitive and made up than a true hurdle to be overcome. My Lady would have enjoyed seeing more development of the moving past their prejudices and preconceptions. A picayune point and one that speaks to individual authorial decisions. My Lady picked up on it because she is considered to be hobnobbing with the hoi poloi by her offspring at times given her involvement with those upon this plain.
My Lady also noted the denouement focusing more of Koishi evolving from only a warrior, self-sufficient as the gatekeeper to daring to become someone defined by something other than his ability with a sword is nicely mirrored against his growing understanding of his mother, who he originally percived, it seemed, as a spawn of the dark gods.
In considering this review and how to convey her view, The Goddess Danu did some research into thy backlist and pondered how it’s evolved since the publication of thy first book, The Omegas. My Lady Danu hopes to soon hear of the publication of thy first full length novel, and, meaning no prejudice, thy emergence into genres beyond the erotic.
She bids me also relay to you her favorite line in the story was uttered by Koishi's mother after she confounds his understanding of her - "I have wars to start and battles to fight." My Lady wonders if Koishi's mother would be interested in assisting her in bringing her own offspring into line. It is My Lady Danu's belief that nothing says I'm serious like bladed weapons and fire-whips. She would also be interested to see just how Koishi'mother starts wars. It is the Goddewss Danu's belief one can never have too much knowledge.
Koishi was one of the nicest and funny readings I have done lately. This book by Annie Nicholas it is a little outside the usual patterns of paranormal fantasy, her dragon has a peculiar sense of humor and some of his jokes and behaviours, for us humans might seem politically incorrect, but actually they me laugh a lot. This is the first book in the GateKeepers Series, Koishi is about the story of Ishi, an ancient and powerful dragon, whose life is tied to be the guardian of a gate that connects different worlds. He Must check that through the portal can't pass dangerous creatures such as dwarfs, trolls, orcs that may try to prey on his world full of magic and treasures. Ishi's life is lonely and totally devoted to his task, the humans his same world fear him, reason for which he interacts with them through human form pretending to be Koishi, an employee of the Dragon; the relationship between creatures of his same breed are hard to maintain, even the one with his own mother. Suddenly it appears in his island an American woman, Sandra, she came in this magical world to get something from the Dragon, a saji, the magical treasure would be able to save her seriously ill sister's life. The woman is willing to do anything to get the saji, even to make a deal with the dragon that everyone fears. Ishi remains intrigued and amused by the personality of Sandra and her courage, and after a long time a person can bring funny and beauty in his long days and thanks being Koishi he can spend time with her to find out what drives her to seek the Dragon. Sandra soon discovers the truth and is catapulted into the supernatural reality of Ishi's life of Ishi and she's fascinated, but reality forces her to accomplish the mission and get back into her own world, although her heart remained on the island. This story is really enjoyable to read, with fantasy creatures, humor, acton and hot sex mixed together, a nice evening is guaranteed. A good start for a new series that I hope will keep these premises or even improve them.
I received this book free via publisher in exchange for an honest review. I don't gush and give false praise – I don't believe that helps readers or authors so what you read is what I truly feel about a book.
I've read some of Annie’s work before – a couple from The Vanguards series and the first in the Angler, so I knew her style is one I like though the books tend to be shorter than I prefer – but then lots of people want a quicker read. I've a friend who reads just a few pages at a time so anything over 100 pages she says is out as it takes too long. I'm a quick and avid reader though so long books for me preferably.
Anyway, enough rambling...and on to this book. The description gives you a pretty good idea of the background, and Koishi the dragon is gatekeeper for one of the gates between the human world and the realm of magic ….Its a realm shrouded in secrecy and few people know about it – Koishi's job is to stop either side from invading or interacting. Sandra needs to speak to the dragon and ask a favour – she wants an artefact to heal her dying sister who is her only relative left. Koishi appears in human form to interact with the mortal world and collect supplies, and its in this form her meets Sandra and is amused by her. After a while eternity gets boring so he looks forward to something that distracts him. Thinking to play with her for a while when he finds she wants to see his alter ego – Koishi – he tells her to wait at a certain spot and sing a song to attract the dragon... and from there he becomes entranced by her. He meets with her in his human form as Ishi and she falls in love with him. There are battles, love scenes and great tracts of humour in this easy to read book. It takes you to a paranormal world with for a change Dragons, but no vamps, no witches, no wolves, just a dragon – and his mum, and a few goblins and dwarves! Its a sweet fun read with a little light drama and adventure and best of all a HEA. I do like those : )
If you like some gentle paranormal adventure with your romance you'll like this book. Its not a book you need to work too hard to enjoy even though Annie has included paranormal creatures as its an easy to follow read, and quite light-hearted. No deep dark drama but sweet and light ( sounds like a saccharine advert ! Buts its not a saccharine read )
Well written and edited as you'd expect from a Lyrical Press book and priced at £2.61 for 126 pages. Its a bit expensive for my taste as I'd read it quickly – about two hours maybe – and its not one I’d re read though I enjoyed it as a one off. Still, if you've a train journey or a hospital stay or something where you want a fun but easy to read story this is perfect.
Stars: four stars – its a good enjoyable story but too short and light for a five star rating from me.
Koishi is a well-rounded novella featuring romance, a volcano, a Japanese shape-shifter and American woman, goblins, dwarves and a gate to protect. Add in an entertaining and spicy romance and I'd call that a filling tale. I read Koishi on a frigid evening as temperatures dipped to two degrees and for a while I forgot all about a snowstorm named Nemo which covered my world in white. Instead, I was transferred to an island in Japan where a volcano housed a stone dragon shape shifter named Koishi.
I enjoyed how different this story was. Narrated by both main characters, Koishi has an offbeat sense of humor which made him endearing (after awhile). Sandra, the American tourist on a mission to ask the dragon for help to cure her dying younger sister, is meek at first, but she quickly turns spunky. There was such a variety of scenes in this story which kept the pace moving. Koishi has the town believing he is the human connection to the dragon who lives in the volcano. When a pretty blond discovers his secret, he doesn't seem to worry. Sandra is determined to find help for her sibling but her trip itinerary didn't include an attractive shifter she grows to like spending time with.
For its' short length, Koishi packed a lot in this first installment of The Gatekeepers series by Annie Nicholas. Being a stickler for more details and worldbuilding, I did want to see some more about these realms and yet was content with that the author provided. Warring dwarves, a Goblin pet, a treasure-filled cavern, and a love story between a stone dragon and human--that's a lot to keep readers interested. Even the addition of Koishi's mother added to the story's warmth. I liked the myth the author created, especially Koishi's ability (as a stone dragon) to control lava. As for his dragon part, his red scales and claws made him quite easy to visualize. I mentioned well-rounded earlier and the scene where Sandra scrubs his scales had me chuckling.
Different, entertaining and humorous, I enjoyed Koishi and anticipate enjoying the rest of The Gatekeepers stories as well.
(I received a promotional copy as part of a book tour through Bewitching Book Tours.)

This was a really fast read and a lot of fun. It's a total fantasy trip. The Koishi/Ishi character is pretty much a dragon and I think maybe Annie doesn't like Chihuahuas too much. But dragons are elegant creatures, sly and cunning. They love their treasures. Nichols dragons guard our plane from magic beings who would do us harm. This one is guarding a Japanese volcano wherein lies a gate. his human form is Koishi and the dragon is Ishe. Koishe is a handsome man and he is somehow taken with Sandra who, although desperate to cure her dying sister is also drawn to him -- both the man and the dragon. She's searching for a magical object he is known to have to cure her sister dying from cancer.
Well, it's erotica, so you can imagine he and she hook up. The cool thing is that already has accepted the existence of supernaturals like dragons, so that's not the hurdle. The hurdle, as it so often is, is trust. Like the Beast, pining when Beauty leaves, Ishe pines after Sandra.
So it was fast, sexy and fun, if a little too much of a fantasy in the way human emotions are played - too fast to change and too emotionally reactive. Then a bit slow to get back to her dying sister. But that isn't the point anyway.
I was pleased with the descriptive third-person. It wasn't just information dumping. Also the use of body part names was pretty respectful proving vulgarity is not required for a story to be sexy. I was amused by the dragon's hijinks and Sandra's rapid adaptation to the having a dragon for a lover, also to the flying dwarf heads. To be kind, she does puke a lot when the dwarves' heads start to fly. They also had fun in the bedroom other than the obvious entertainment. She makes a lasting impression on the dragon and he on her. If your looking for fast, sexy and funny this might be for you.
I do love a shapeshifting dragon read so when I accidentally came across this one I just had to grab it especially after I read the tease blurb.
I did enjoy this book that featured one mysterious dragon shapeshifter who was charged with guarding an interdemensional portal where magical (butt ugly and mean) creatures continually tried to cross over and create havoc.
The actual story is engaging and the author had an unique writing style that worked to develop the different characters and the antics that occured between them along the way. Further, the ongoing battle between Koishi and the goblins and dwarfs alone made this book worth while. I do believe the author may have taken her inspiration from: do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup. :D This is not a book for animal lovers because of that.
My issues were that the overall flow of this book was "off" for me. The author said the right words and added the details that made this more than a simple romance story or paranormal fantasy plot yet I felt it was too clinical and rigid for my tastes. And the adult content that was referred to in the author's CONTENT WARNING barely crossed the line into 'hot dragon sex'. If anything I would use the 'new adult' tag as the scenes were far and few between with the descriptive aspects the insert tab A into tab B and slot C into slot D format. There were hints of a D/s relationship but I truly am not sure so I won't mention anything more about it. Lastly, the climatic ending didn't float my boat. I can't comment any further as it would be a spoiler.
I had a positive feeling about this book but didn't feel that the overall premise was executed in a way that worked for me.
I LOVE DRAGONS! I of course say this often, but I felt the need to reiterate And it’s funny! and it’s full of adventures, and action, and then of course there’s hot dragons! Ok, I will try to stop saying how awesome the dragons are LOL It’s got another unique spin on why dragons are in our world to begin with. And the whole gates, and the other side, is very cool!
Sandra is beautiful and strong and on a seriously desperate mission to help save her sister from death. She is willing to do anything to get this cure, even bargin with a dragon! And this poor girl, when you meet her, she is loosing every ounce of anything left in her stomach over the sides of the boat as she is traveling to this little island. And I so give her props, as she meets “him” and pulls it off well. I like her, and I like her courage, and I of course like that she gets to hang out with a dragon!
Koishi is a bleep. He comes off as cocky, conceited, and of course HAWT! He’s only interested in his job and his treasures. That’s until the day he meets the intriguing and beautiful American, Sandra. She totally gives him a major surprise and a crazy wake up call. It’s quite fun. And let me just say I thought it was so good for him after he talks about eating little fuzzy chihuahuas!!
I love the world that this story was built on and I really like the writing. It’s not often that you hear a male’s point of view written by a woman that actually sounds like a man! Did that sentence just make sense? LOL Let me just say I have every intention and will definitely be going in for book two as soon as it’s out!! HIGH FIVE! And a SOARINGLY BEAUTIFUL 5 PAWS from me!!!
The only word that keeps running through my mind to describe this story is “fun”. The author is a good writer with a lot of witty humor that keeps you reading and enjoying from beginning to end. The characters each had their quirks and all contributed to the funny factor.
The teasing banter between Sandra and Koishi is amusing and occasionally even sweet. Their chemistry is good, but not over the top, and when they got down to it, they were hot. I did feel that Koishi had more depth to him than Sandra did. Sandra, while likeable and all, seemed a little two dimensional. What you see is what you get with her. Koishi showed a little more evolution throughout the story in different ways so it was really to his character that I was particularly attached.
The plot itself was pretty predictable, I won’t lie, but it was exciting and fun which made up for it and kept me reading anyway. Koishi’s very dragon way of looking at things felt very authentic and stayed true throughout and that too brought the book up in stature. This was truly just a fun, pretty light hearted read all around.
If you’re looking for a quick fun, sexy read – look no further! Koishi is an urban fantasy full of goblins, dwarves, and dragons around every corner. You won’t be left wanting and will finish with a smile.

I am happy that more asian heroes are appearing in romance genre. Even if he is a Dragon... This book was a very quick read for me. It was well paced, it trapped my attention from the beginning. Made me laugh. Still there some things to be said.
Details:
a) Loved the romance building. Very good timing. b) Heroine was very likable. c) Koishi was sexy, sweet, good enough. But I truelly did not feel he was japanese. I have read my share of manga, seen doramas, and enough japanese hotties to kinda know. Even though he´s a dragon the customs or the way he expresses himself is very important and it does not show. If I were japanese, I wouldn´t believe he was. Even the language is essential. d)Loved the plot and how it affected the characters. Very interesting Dungeons and Dragons point of view on an old fashioned dragon. The deals and interactions were beautiful. e)Liked the mother very much. f)The ending felt rushed or had the intent of being epic. So I liked it. Very acceptable. A japanese dragon hottie! What more could I ask for? Definitely worth reading.
Although I tend to avoid books with this kind of cover (a half or completely naked man on it) what lead me to read it was the name, Koishi. Just that, the name. And I am glad that it was fun and not a waste.
To begin with the good points, the male MC is a Japanese hottie. Who is also a dragon-shifter and has a fun sense of humor. Besides, I've been dying to read an inter-racial romance, preferably Japanese guy/Caucasian girl, which this suited perfectly. Sandra travels to Japan to get a magical spoon for her dying little sister from the Dragon Ishi, and in the meantime, meets Koishi, and eventually, she learns he is actually the dragon.
Besides, there is a kind goblin (Koishi's "pet") and battles against dwarves. The book is short -not too short to be considered a novella, but everything happens in about 2 days. The misunderstandings are quickly cleared up, and the supposed villain is actually nice.
I always love shapeshifter stories. Always. Always. But this one... I don't know if it's just me (not in the mood-which is rarely) or it has to do with the book itself, but I find it's kinda off and lacking. I mean, the plot's nice, that's what got me to read this one but I find the story dragging and somewhat boring. It has its good scenes and such at the least but overall, it so much did not reach to my expectations. It was well-written though but it just not bid well for my taste. Better luck next time for me.
Everyone should try reading this one, maybe this might just be what they're looking for.
Koishi is my very first dragon book and I found it to be quite interesting. Loved the general concept as it was super hot! Although it made me wonder what it would be like if he were in dragon form during the steamy scenes...oops, am I allowed to say that?? lol The pacing was good and the characters relatable. The writing was average, not incredible but not weak either. I didn't really like the ending...I would have liked to know more about what happened to them, but I guess that's what the next book is for? In general, I am happy with my first dragon experience and wouldn't mind reading more about it.
This is a pretty darn great storyline. Love Ishi's point of view. He makes some very interesting points (He complains that villagers judge him because he eats dogs, and, while he's horrified when they eat winged creatures like chickens, HE doesn't judge.)
I do have one small-ish complaint: 1. Beth seems like a cardboard cutout character. She seems hardly relevant, despite being Sandra's great motivation.
Like I said, very interesting story; very interesting characters; nicely written HEA.
Unfortunately it was about 1/2 through when it began to get my interest peaked enough to turn page after page. I will finish any book once I start reading. it's very very rare that I not finish unless I just can't push through.
I am glad that I continued reading the story began to expand on characters making it more enjoyable. By the end of the book I was looking forward to the next book. I'm hoping that book 2 continues in the same fashion as the last half of this book.
