How to Ruin a Wedding

Rate this book
There are three things to know about Tilly
1. She’s a liar.
2. She thinks she’s in love with her best friend.
3. She’s got a plan to ruin his wedding.

Tilly and her best friend have been through it all. For decades, he has been her support system, and she’s been his right hand gal, and now he’s engaged to someone else?

Not on her watch.

"Hey, want to help me break up a wedding?" is a dubious start to an unlikely friendship, but the bride’s ex-boyfriend, Zack, is the perfect partner in crime for Tilly's misguided plan to spoil the nuptials. The bearded and brooding man is clearly desperate to win back the love of his life, and she’s all too willing to help if it’ll break up the happy couple.

But the more she tries to interfere with the wedding and the closer she gets to Zack, the more confusing Tilly's feelings become. About a decades-long friendship, about what she thought was love, and most terrifyingly, about the way Zack saves all of his smiles for her.

'my best friend's wedding' inspired romance? sign me up

↪ plot:

From what I just told you, you can guess a good portion of the plot, but in case you can't, here it goes: Tilly has been in love (or so she thinks) with her best friend for a while but only realizes how serious it is when she finds out he's marrying someone who isn't her. What's she going to do about it? Well obviously try to break that relationship before it gets to altar. She'll need someone extra help for that though, and who else other than Zack, the bride's ex who's still hung up on her (or so he thinks), to bring everyone back to who they should be with? But someone should warn Tilly and Zack about all the forced proximity they'll get into, and the feelings they'll develop... and not for the people they started all this for.

↪ thoughts:

Oh I adored this. I could feel the chemistry between Tilly and Zack from the beginning, and was begging them to get together and abandon their plan of breaking the soon-to-be-married couple.
"He kissed with his whole body, with his arms wound around me and murmured words against my neck and ear. He consumed me, and I never wanted it to stop."
Zack and Tilly fit so perfectly together. They had similar views on different topics, payed enough attention to call each other's bluff from the beginning, opened up about their own stories, dreams and aspirations, and had the sort of ease you get with someone after years of being together. I loved every moment we got of them together and how they slowly started falling for each other.
"Like the best kind of kisses, our time together wasn’t perfect because of what we did— which was boring everyday stuff most of the time— it was perfect because we were together."
I was a little bit scared that they weren't going to live up to the expectations I put on them based on how much everyone that read this book loved it, but there was nothing to worry about. I was even sad when I finished it because I wanted more of them :( .

(And by the way, Tilly is flawed and her plan starts for terribly selfish reasons, but in the end, and kind of like i felt about our main trio in the movie, it's not only Tilly's fault when everything crashes down. Tyler (Tilly's bff aka the groom) was also guilty in some way for treating Tilly like she was disposable and only needed when he wasn't with someone else. On top of that, Sarah (the bride) and Tyler didn't have a foundation strong enough to handle the serious talks about their future that Tilly's mending was calling for... Just saying.)

I feel like I cannot rate a Sophie Andrews book below 5 stars lmao. They are so enjoyable and fun to read truly. This book was such a fun wedding-shenanigans ride with a swoony, romantic love story.

If you have a soft spot for the movie My Best Friend's Wedding, you will adore this book. Plus the heroine does have a happily ever after by the end, so do not worry about that. Tilly has been in love with her best friend since forever. But then he announces he's getting married to someone he met three weeks ago. She comes up with a plan to break them up and basically ruin their wedding. But she knows she cannot do it alone, so she enlists the bride's ex, handsome Zack, for help.

If you don't really like the main character of the movie, I feel like you won't enjoy Tilly either. She's unhinged, insane, and funny as hell. Since the beginning you know she's ready to break them up and she does some stuff that won't be liked by many. She constantly compares herself to Sarah (aka the bride) so I feel like many would be annoyed by that too. But you will understand everything that Tilly is going through and why she thinks that way. Her whole journey is so amazing to watch and I was craving and craving for her to finally open her eyes, to see the reality of what she's been living.

She easily says yes to everything because she wants people to be happy, and even though she doesn't want to do it, she does it. Many people step on her because of that, especially her best friend Tyler. But enter Zack and you know this guy makes her understand what's been happening. Zack sees her. COMPLETELY. He knows she lies constantly, he knows she prefers pineapples on her pizza, and so on. And now that I've even read the bonus extra where we see one of the scenes in Zack's POV, you realize that he has been enchanted by her since the very beginning. (The whole book only has Tilly's POV).

Zack is a sweetheart and even if he says he isn't a romantic, he totally is. I love that Tilly goes to war for him whenever someone says something mean about him. She wants to protect him and he wants to protect her as well. It's such a sweet and lovely relationship that started off in a weird way lmao. But you can clearly see the attraction between them and they cannot be in the same room without watching each other or even touching one another. They gravitates towards the other so easily, like it's natural for them to do it.

Overall, I really loved this book, I couldn't stop reading it which says a lot. Sophie's books are so charming and romantic, you instantly fall in love with the characters and storyline. And this one is no different.

This was such a cute rom-com! Lovable characters with really cute chemistry & a little bit of spice makes this book perfect! Not to mention, you can’t go wrong with a dedication to Julia Roberts & a book inspired by the movie My Best Friends Wedding. This is the first book I’ve read by Sophie Andrews & I don’t think it’ll be my last. While this book was slightly predictable I’m definitely not mad about it because of how much I loved it. If you do decide to pick this one up, don’t forget to subscribe to the authors newsletter because you get a bonus chapter in a different POV, which made me love it that much more!

Everyone knows the stereotype of the girl best friend being in love with her guy best friend.
But Sophie takes us down a path of understanding the unrequited love and brings to us a deep and involved story that brings in not only their stories but the beautiful stories of each character she introduces. I also loved the inclusivity among the characters and the real issues presented and faced as the characters grew and evolved. Many stories such as these have you kind of wishing for the downfall of a villain but in this story everyone has a chance to grow and evolve.

I could not put this down, it was such a fun and fast paced read! And for my spice lovers
🌶🌶🌶🌶 for sure. Definetly need to snag this one if you love spice with an amazing plot.
She deserves every one of the five stars. I can't wait to read more of her work!

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Story: 📖📖📖📖📖

This was a fun page turner. Now albeit I wasn’t sure I’d like Tilly and her shenanigans but I quickly fell in love with her “UGH… whatever” attitude with a splash of “I’m going to get my way” bad girl behaviour.

She is a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it.

Zach makes you so swoons. His aloof disposition is quite charming in a weird way. It’s oddly attractive. Actually I lied it’s “YES GIVE ME MORE”

This is a cheeky tale with tons of spunk and attitude. Both of the MCs are enjoyable to read and the story is beautifully written no matter how messy the scenario.

It’s relatable read.

Enjoy.

The book was well written and edited with a good amount of spice, angst and built characters. One star down for the single POV and the premise was not my favourite to begin with. Spend an entire lifetime thinking you are in love with someone, see them happy with someone else and then try to sabotage that? Halfway through — realize that your co-sabotage-er is actually who you are in long with. Hmm…
Good quick read with quirky characters, decent banter and a well enough character arc.

Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of this title; all options expressed are my own.

Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC. Below are my honest thoughts on this book.

Tilly and Tyler have been friends since childhood. When Tyler gets engaged to Sarah, Tilly decides she’s going to do everything in her power to break up Tyler and his fiancée, since Tilly believes she belongs with Tyler. Along the way Tilly gets Sarah’s ex, Zack involved her plan. As Tilly gets to know Zack she learns that he might be everything she was looking for in a romantic partner.

One of my favorite things about this book is the character development for Tilly. When I started the book I found Tilly to be immature, a little selfish and not a character I could really relate to at all. As the book progressed she really matured, especially when it came to confessing what she did to Tyler. Tilly knew there would be negative consequences for her, but she still owned up to her actions, when it would have been easier for her to keep quiet. Tilly’s growth made her, for me, a very relatable character by the end of the book.

Another thing I loved was that this book doesn’t portray romance in an unrealistic light. Tilly’s idea of romance and looking forward to the normal things in a relationship, was a refreshing perspective in a romance novel. So often I finish a book (and no hate to other romance novels because some days I just need the escape for a total fairy tale happily ever after), and I wonder how many people actually have relationships like the one I just finished reading. But Tilly and Zack reminded me that the romance is in the everyday things that we can sometimes overlook.

Overall I loved this book. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it will definitely not be the last. I really enjoyed reading this book and Zack was what my book boyfriend dreams are made of.

This book took me by surprise right away in thinking that this was going to be a best friends coming together romance. I haven’t read anything like this before where the girl didn’t end up with the best friend and I’m so happy about it! I loved the single POV and felt like I was in Tilly’s head all the time. This was such a fun easy read that I think a lot of people will be able to relate to!

a nice romcom for all the book girlies who love the lumberjack vibe. not my case unfortunately and the same height thing turned me off but I still had a good time overall!

let's start with the positive : nice side characters and back story for her, not so muck for him tho, his past was brought up once or twice. the flirting was ok, the little tension when you know he wants her but still helps her go after her crush was fun.

"This is what you wanted, isn't it?"
.
I had some trouble with her cringey lines and attitude, also how self centered the whole premise - and her - is, despite her usually sacrificing so much of herself for others. the reveal to the bff was awful to witness, like girl pick yourself up you brought it on yourself 🙏

"I, on the other hand, ate everything on my plate and drank free champagne whenever it was offered."🤪
.
strong pick me, not like other girls vibes at the beginning but I was glad to see she slowly overcame that, although she remains "one of the boys" until the end.

"Everything we needed to talk about would have to wait. [...] I kissed my apology into the sensitive part of his throat"
.
😃ummm major communication issues guys 🥰 the big talk HAS to take place and she just had a 48 hour breakdown, maybe keep your clothes on and TALK like civilized human beings??

"I should move in with him."
.
🚩 moving in with a guy you met 6 months ago and have been dating for like 2 months is, in fact, a chronically new romance activity. please don't do that irl that's mental illness

and finally, my favorite line ever and a personal life motto : "That was one of his best qualities, his height."🙌 preach (with it was about the MMC tho)

“Everything in me knows it’s home.” How was I not supposed to give this book a five stars??? I know there’s a saying that you can’t outdo the original but this book gave me the same buzz as My Best Friend’s Wedding did! Tilly nothing short of insane BUT her growth throughout this story was so amazing to watch. Her craziness and brazenness in the beginning when conducting this plan was literally hilarious. Like she absolutely knew she was a villain and as the book continued and the guilt started eating her away you saw her true heart. Tilly and Zack from the first interaction had me. I was screaming for them to finally realize what they had and drop the crazy plot. Like this is feeling that I crave from resonances just utter delusion, I LOVE IT!

// thank you to the publishers and netgalley for letting me read this arc in exchange for an honest review!

this book is a weird one to review because i feel it’s very strong in certain aspects and it fell short for me in others. to starts, the main characters is well-developed and her love for her irish ancestry and history was lovely to read. the male main character and his struggles and insecurities were nice to see and the supporting cast of characters was wonderful. the friendship between her and tyler felt very real too—especially in the way she slowly begins to question their relationship and its place in her life.

the book was very strong in the first and last third of the book. the third act conflict felt both realistic and necessary to give the story a satisfactory ending, and the whole book had been building up to it. a little pet peeve of mine are female main character who feel the need to be extremely honest for no reason (if no one asks you if wanted to ruin his wedding, maybe they don’t need to know) but i suppose that’s a personal thing. i would have liked to see tyler get a stronger ass-whipping for being an ass and vaguely slimy sometimes, but oh well.

where this book fell short for me was the middle third. despite being written in only the female main character’s pov, it was extremely obvious from the get-go that our male love interest was interested in her. this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, except that this was one of the driving questions supposed to sustain the tension until the third act conflict. another strange criticism of mine is the placement of the smut scenes. the smut scenes coincide with deep and important conversations related to the progression of their relationship—and as someone who prefers to skim smut, that made it really difficult to follow. it also felt extremely unrealistic, because it wasn’t like they had the conversation first—no, the smut was happening in the middle of the future plans and do-you-like-me conversations.

still a sweet book, and i wouldn’t be opposed to reading more by this author!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this arc.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. While I thought the initial description was cute, I didn’t think I’d get invested into the characters and plot as much as I did, I do see how it was inspired by the movie, ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ I mean look at the title- but it was much more. I enjoyed the story beginning to end- I felt satisfied with the ending and thought everything was wrapped up perfectly!

I picked up How to Ruin a Wedding by Sophie Andrews as someone I know was raving about how good it was and I wasn't disappointed. If you're looking for a book version of the movie My Best Friend's Wedding (ugh...I think I just aged myself with that reference...), then this is it!

Tilly has been in love with her best friend forever and she has quietly been waiting for him to realize he loves her as more than just a friend but when he hooks up with someone at a wedding and ultimately proposes to the girl, Tilly finds herself in a situation she never really imagined she would be...trying to break up the engagement. As part of her strategy, she reaches out to the new fiance's old boyfriend, Zach, to get him to help her out and that's when things get interesting.

Zack was probably my favorite thing about this book. The chemistry he and Tilly had was amazing and I wanted her to stop pushing him to engage with the other girl much sooner than she did. He was way more interesting than Tyler and while she had history with Tyler, Zack truly invested his time to get to know her and paid attention.

If you're looking for a Contemporary Romance that has interesting characters, comedy, and some spice, pick this one up. I flew through it and will definitely pick up more from Sophie Andrews in the future.

A book that's inspired from 'My Best Friend's Wedding'? Yes. Please.
This book was so much fun! I loved how the characters were written. Tilly is a female main character who in actuality isn't the best person and does make bad decisions. That alone felt very refreshing. On top of that the relationships she has with the other characters are so well written. You can really see why she makes the decisions she does and how that affects everyone else around her.
And Zach OH ZACH! I will be enquiring where I can find my self a Zach. The chemistry between Zach and Tilly is another level. Plus their witty banter and dry humor was another thing that made me absolutely obsessed with them.
I really really enjoyed how the story gets told because it felt realistic while also making you forget you're actually reading!

How to Ruin a Wedding
By: Sophie Andrews
Pub date: September 15, 2023
“I, Tilly Mahoney am a liar. And I’m in love with my best friend.”
“You know when you’re going through old photo albums, and you see a picture that’s familiar to you, you can almost smell it? You can remember what you experienced in the picture and your heart aches to go back there?
He nodded.
“You’re my album. You contain it all.”
Thank you to @netgalley and @victoryeditingngc for the advanced copy of How to Ruin a Wedding in return for my honest opinion.
Tilly’s whole life comes crashing down on her when she finds out her best friend, Tyler is engaged to Sarah, a woman he just met a few months ago. Tilly has watched and waited on the sidelines while Tyler has enjoyed the single life always hoping he would realize he ultimately wants to spend his life with her. But life doesn’t always go according to your dreams.
The only thing there is left to do is stop the wedding! When Tilly meets Sarah’s ex, Zach through some online investigating it’s game on! It’s during all this scheming and hanging out together to discuss their next moves that Tilly rethinks her plan. Maybe she isn’t meant to be with Tyler. Maybe there is someone else for her.
I read this book in two days, it just flowed so well. I loved that Tilly was curvy with wild curly hair, and that she had this friend that she was secretly in love with. My heart breaks for her and I want to cry and then I am rooting that she gets the one she deserves, because they are awesome together. Life lesson: Life is never going to go as planned, and that’s okay because it can also unfold into an unexpected happily ever after.

4.5 stars!!!
I usually don't read books with this type of storyline where the girl is pinning for someone else BUT I am so glad I decided to pick this one up. It was so good. The story was well executed.
Tilly's character development was done so well and Zack!!! One can see that he was a goner for Tilly from the beginning. I love how their relationship developed and there was no miscommunication between them.

First off, thanks to BookSirens and Sophie Andrews for this ARC!

4.5/5🌟

If you start a book by dedicating it to Julia Roberts and saying it was inspired by My Best Friend’s Wedding, say less. I’m already there. In fact, I will apparently audibly squeal.

MBFW is collectively one on my family’s fave rom coms and I’ve been watching it since I was probably far too young to be (Thanks, Mom! No, really… thanks for not banishing me from the living room every time you had it on). So needless to say, it’s a part of my very DNA.

I would have been happy with a near identical retelling but I was pleasantly surprised that when Andrews said *inspired* by, she actually meant it. It’s the same starting point, but I greatly enjoyed the twists she took Tilly, Tyler, Sarah, and Zack through on their own journeys.

It’s quick enough to keep the story moving but not so fast the characters miss the chance to share their backgrounds and develop. And there’s juuust enough spice, too. I found myself desperately rooting for Tilly even though she’s a self-described bad person. At just 290 pages, more than once I simply didn’t pick up my Kindle because I wasnt ready to leave her!

Highly recommend you pick this up as soon as it’s out on September 15th!

I received this ARC for free, however, all opinions are my own.

Right when I read this was inspired by My Best Friend’s Wedding, I knew instantly this was going to be a book I loved, and Sophie did not disappoint.

The FMC’s inner dialogue is absolutely hilarious! She had me laughing with her catty and witty comments.

Similar to the movie, you have best friends that everyone always assumed would eventually be together. However, that's not the case. Tilly sees her best friend Tyler going off with a girl she just assumed would be another fling. Come to find out, they’d be engaged 3 months later and are soon to be married.

Being absolutely devastated, Tilly decides this wedding needs to be sabotaged because Tyler can’t possibly marry someone else. She’s in love with him. So what is her resolve?

She finds the bride Sarah’s ex boyfriend, and persuaded him to conjure a scheme to not only sabotage the wedding, but to break up the couple so they can have their respected partners back.

This feel good romance was equal parts hilarious and heartfelt.

Thank you so much NetGalley and Sophie Andrews for the ARC. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

My Best Friends wedding but hotter!
5 Stars, open door, single pov, first person.

Tilly Mahoney is in love with her best friend Tyler, so when he announces his engagement to Sarah, a girl he met only weeks before, she makes it her mission to break up the wedding. She enlists the help of Zack, Sarah's most recent ex, in the hope that she can get them back together, and show Tyler that he is meant to be with her.
Somewhere along the way, she starts to realise that maybe Tyler isn't her forever guy after all.

I honestly didn't expect to love this as much as I did. I really didn't expect Tilly to be as likeable as she was. This story really worked with a single POV, I liked not knowing how Zack was feeling until it was revealed to Tilly.

Thank you to Netgalley and Victory Editing for sharing an advanced copy of this book.

I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. I honestly LOVED it. While romance is not normally my preferred genre, I couldn't get enough of this book. It was such a well written and fun read. It did take me a bit to finish, but that had more to do with life getting in the way because anytime I had time to sit and read, I didn't want to put it down. Seriously, large chunks of this book was consumed in scattered parking lots in between tasks on my to do list.
While I was I was uncertain about it in the beginning, I quickly grew to love most of the characters as well as their stories. I will definitely pick up more by this author in the future. 💕

Tilly has been in love with her best friend Tyler for years. She's sure that one day he'll see her as more than a friend. However, she is shocked when he hits it off with someone else and ends up engaged.

Tilly is sure he isn't supposed to marry this girl and partners up with her ex-boyfriend Zack to try to derail the wedding. Things get complicated, though, when she and Zack begin to grow closer.

Sophie Andrew's has crafted a story that is entertaining and engaging, and I enjoyed it so much! It was a fantastic blend of humor, romance, emotional moments, and so much more. I can't wait to read more from this author!

Loved this - definitely recommend!

Zack and Tilly are both broken people who mend each other's hearts so, so beautifully. It's really heartwarming to see Tilly's progression and relearning how to be herself and to follow her heart.

It broke my heart a little how Tilly and Tyler's relationship became, but at the same time they were extremely co-dependent, which wasn't all that healthy TBH.

Ooh, and the smut between Zack and Tilly was spot on 🥵

Don't pass on this book - you'll love it!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

What can I say about this book. I’m left speechless with little fluttering of my heart. Tilly went down a path to destroy her best friend wedding because she was in love with him. On the way she decided to bring the bride ex boyfriend into the picture. Through the crazy event she decided that she loved Zach instead and only wanted happiness for Tyler. But everything was already in motion and there wasn’t much she could have done to stop the truck wreck. This book had me laughing out loud and giggling like a school girl.
