Eyes Wide Open continues with MIRRORS, the second of four episodic ebooks.

Who am I?

My name is Christy Snow. I'm seventeen and I'm about to die.

I'm buried in a coffin under tons of concrete. No one knows where I am. My heart sounds like a monster with clobber feet, running straight toward me. I'm lying on my back, soaked with sweat from the hair on my head to the soles of my feet. My hands and feet won't stop shaking.

Some will say that I m not really here. Some will say I'm delusional. Some will say that I don t even exist. But who are they? I'm the one buried in a grave.

My name is Christy Snow. I'm seventeen. I'm about to die.

So who are you?

Horrifying

Austin and Christy remain trapped in the psychiatric hospital. While they are being brainwashed they struggle between reality and illusions.

Thankfully we didn't have to wait long for the second installment of Ted Dekker's Eyes Wide Open book as we carry straight on with the action from Identity. With both Christy and her friend Austin both starting to question their very sanity and no seeming way out of this nightmare they have discovered themselves in, the action revs up a notch further if that's even possibe.

Christy's repressed memories play an important role and Austin's desperate attempts to reach her on the ominous 'second floor' are some of the major set pieces in this exciting episode.

Who is really running this mental ward and what is their reason for detaining our two and trying to convince even them that they are not who they think they are.

In true Ted Dekker fashion, it's as mind bending as it gets and these short episodic parts lend themselves perfectly to the quick fire release pattern. I for one can't wait to see how it all pans out and just which reality is correct. The perfect length to plow through in one sitting.

As good as the first one.
Dekker's thrillers are so well written.

"Our minds ask questions we can’t know the answers to with certainty. Our answers depend on when and where we were born, which myths and legends we were taught to believe, our perceptions that mold our very small realities. A few hundred years ago, you would’ve believed the world was flat and sickness could be cured by leeching the blood from your body. And you would’ve been right as far as you knew. Which of your beliefs today will turn out to be obviously false tomorrow?"

The second book was as good as the first, and will leave you ready for the next "episode."

Dragging you deeper into a world in which you're never quite sure where delusion ends and reality begins, Christy and Austin fight to discover that line of fantasy and sanity.

I wrote a review for entire novel on my blog and am posting at each book section. Mirrors was my least favorite installment because I was so confused, but you have to read them all and it all evens out. www.hookofabook.wordpress.com

Review

Identity (Book 1), Mirrors (Book 2), Unseen (Book 3) and Seer (Book 4) are all part of a four episode thrill ride from New York Times bestselling author Ted Dekker. Combined, these sections puzzle together an almost 300-page book called Eyes Wide Open. First launched at the end of December with the free Identity, it continued at a one book per week serial pace and are now all currently available in e-book format separately. In February, all will combine as Eyes Wide Open for purchase as a paperback. I love the covers of each book too, which I'll show throughout the post. They are amazing and fit the story perfectly! Great symbolism!

Ted Dekker is one of my top five favorite authors of all time in any genre. When he sent out an e-mail asking his loyal readers to sign-up for an exciting release, and offered the first section free, I jumped at the chance to check it out. Identity really held my interest and I moved through it in an hour or less and couldn't wait for the next installment. The action was intense and I felt like the main character, Christy, fell through the proverbial Wonderland rabbit hole and into a milder version of an evil asylum all to end up popping through (instead of in) a coat closet to Narnia.

My head was spinning throughout Mirrors and I was as confused as the characters were. The Wonderland analogy in a demented and diluted sort of way kept appearing to me as well as similar allegorical themes such as sometimes illusions can seem so real that they become real. I was really confused and a little horrified (which is a good thing) by the beginning of Unseen, but parts of it also really touched my heart and I could relate to this message. It's one I struggle with. It is a Christian message, more clear than in most any other book I've read by him, but for me, so endearing. Really, anyone can use a reminder on the message of hope and beauty. It is about humankind and love. I wish so much I could tell you, but I don't want to spoil it for you.
I couldn't wait for Seer to hit for purchase this week and luckily enough it came early. And with it, as I read it, came an enlightenment on the entire book, as how we stumble sometimes upon an enlightenment in our life. I was so happy and fulfilled. We need to sometimes not just "take off our rose-colored glasses" but also put on our lenses (or lamps as in the book) and see our light and "the" light. Dekker, through the other characters, reminds us that everyone's timing and road is different. Just as some of the other characters weren't complete by the end, I was also left hoping for more about a mysterious stranger we are introduced to in book 3 and 4. At the end of Seer, I was pleasantly surprised and excited to see that he announced a new novel (maybe a series) focusing on this character and probably some of the other characters we already grew to know and feel compassion for.

I will always want to read anything he likes and I won't judge if I'll continue to read him or not based on any certain book or series. Why? Because he is always pushing his own boundaries as well as ours as readers; he's trying new things and taking risks. Sometimes that works better than other times, but he always entertains as well as makes a reader think (as long as that reader is willing to think).
He is a Christian author and sometimes his books are allegorical in nature, but many of his suspense thrillers can be read by anyone who just loves straight mind-bending psychological suspense. He doesn't always sell himself as a Christian author. However, in this series none of the marketing materials or content (plus he self-published using his Outlaw Studios so there isn't any Christian publisher involved) mentioned that there would be a Christian message. He already has some secular horror and suspense readers up in arms over there being no "warning." Is that something that needs to be done? What do you think? I thought the message was an important one, whether you are a Christian or not, and anyone of any belief could find inspiring and motivational insight behind the message he presents in this book.

In regards to his marketing choices as well, he also didn't really announce it as a young adult novel. Reading his other books, I felt the writing style was plainer and thought it didn't quite feel like him. Anyone reading him for the first time should not judge his other works on this. I felt that he either rushed this plot and prose and didn't polish it up, or he meant it for young adults. Without him saying which, I struggled with the whole book on this point since I was caught off guard. Again, as with the point previously mentioned, maybe he wanted to gain as many readers as possible to get to a #1 Amazon spot, but I feel he did himself a small injustice as an author.
Also, I bet if he announced as young adult appropriate, which it was, he would have gotten more readers. Many of his books teens probably shouldn't read due to their nature so parents wouldn't know to purchase for their kids too. It is totally teen appropriate and the message such a good learning point for them. It needs on a YA list! When doing research for this blog (there is nothing up on his website as of 1/15/2013) it took me days to find any reference to it being a young adult genre, which I finally spotted on an Amazon synopsis (you can see for yourself on the synopsis I posted from there).

The only other final thing I have to remark on, and I hate to do it to my favorite author, but he really needed to slow down with this book. He really needed to hire an editor and if he did, he needs his money back. This was the most awful display of missed words and errors that I have ever seen in a bestselling author. Many times I got held up on a word that was missing and I am fast reader who skims. I don't know how many times I remarked on this. It made me feel as if he just didn't put the care into it. Yes, the first book was free but his reputation is on the line with new readers. What kind of impression is this? Also, the next three books were $2.99 each for about 100 pages each...that is quite a bit of money for me to spend--$10 for a 300 page e-book. We have a collection of his books on our shelf too, if we wanted to get the combined paperback in February it would be another $14.99 and how do I know that the errors will be corrected?? He may get away with leaning on the fact that people like me who are dire hard fans will purchase anyway, but really we should still get our money's worth. If you are going to self-publish more works Ted Dekker, please hire an editor (I'm available!!).

That said, readers and Ted too, don't take me wrong. I am a marketer and PR person by trade and I tend to have an eye that looks towards these issues. I know that Ted Dekker took a big gamble on self-publishing, which means he has to write and market his own books. (I'm happy to offer advice!)

Overall, it was a great new endeavor in taking a risk and trying several new things which are serial e-books, making a prequel so huge that everyone wants to join the club for what's coming up next, offering his first free e-book section to create a buzz, and for him, self-publishing. I'm glad I was paying attention to his Facebook page and was already signed-up to receive his e-mail messages. It's how I knew about the book coming out...his website doesn't have any info. He really does treat his loyal fans well, so if you are a fan, be sure to sign-up on his website to get email notices or follow his Facebook updates.

I loved the story overall. It messed with my mind and made me think and cry and wonder all at various times. It felt surreal and yet real and it took ahold of my thoughts for weeks. I'd recommend the read and I really can't wait for the next novel.

YAY! 5/5! Ted Dekker truly brings on the thriller & psychological twists that I grew up to know and adore with his writings. From the beginning I was hooked, as opposed to the first book from the series, & and I couldn't put it down!

Definitely give this series a shot because it soon becomes a page turner and for me super relatable towards the end. I've been a huge fan of Ted Dekker for many years and I'm still floored at how he connects his books to his previous novels. (Read Outlaw to see the connection I'm talking about.) He is truly a phenomenal storyteller.

This book 2 of the 'Eyes Wide Open' series got my heart beating fast and I am now officially confused. This book is truly mind bending.⁣

Are Christy and Austin a figment of Alice's and Scott's imagination?⁣

Who then is the other lady supposedly called Alice?⁣

This mental hospital seems like a cover up.

Now that Austin has killed the Director of admissions, what next? ⁣

Definitely looking forward to reading the Book 3.⁣

This episode was better than the first one. The story is getting more interesting. I will continue to the next episode. I can’t wait to see how things play out. I am sure others would enjoy this story as well. It may take a bit to get into (for me it was towards the end of the first episode) but once it gets going it gets interesting.

Holy Moly!!!

This and part one both, gives me the shivers! Great story, but parts are really hitting home as well. Bought this in serialized form years ago and wasn't in a place to read it. Glad, and thanks be to God, I am now because it's great!

Dekker picks up steam and interest with this second installment. I only continued because I needed a mindless read but he is developing a more, a bit more, interesting plot and characters. It is fast so I'm going to continue because he showed so much depth in the circle series.

The story of Christy and Austin continues. Unable to escape from the psych ward, they begin to question what they believe about themselves, especially Christy. The mirrors in her bathroom seem to enhance all the things she hates about herself.

Perception is reality. Except when it isn't.

A cliffhanger at the end of every book

To say that this book series is just a thriller doesn't do it justice. Every chapter captures your senses and pulls you in and you can't stop reading to find out what happens next. You would do yourself good to just buy the whole series set from the start.

Yea! Finally good Christian fiction!

Okay, so I suppose I was right Dekker was just warming up in Book 1! This book had a good amount of action, and was laden with psychological intrigue, which brought mystery to it as well. The plotline flowed beautifully. Dekker does entertaining work for a novella. Clean story, as is that it's Christian genre. And this particular installment has a good and shocking ending. I usually don't read Christian fiction, because I feel it lacks quality, but this a great one for it's genre.

3.5

There's a little more character development in this "episode," but not a lot. It was pretty exciting, as are all Dekker's fiction books, but I am still having a hard time accepting a lot of what Dekker says goes on in a psych ward. He's making it out to be a terrible place where they kill patients, do lobotomies, etc., and I'm sorry, but that's not realistic.

I really like Christy and Austin, and I can resonate with both of them, but somehow they seem to be... caricatures of actual people. For example, Christy is overemotional. And Austin is obsessed with intelligence and "finding answers." I mean, in the first "episode," he is auditing a graduate level philosophy course, and he's 17 - and he's topping the grad students' answers to the professor's questions with his own. What kind of uber smart 17 year old who doesn't have a family and doesn't have a job would be auditing a class at an Ivy League school?

I don't really know what I think of this "series" thus far. It's a little disappointing, I won't lie. Dekker's books are usually a little more grounded in reality than this one is. I mean, yes, they're usually slightly off from actually being realistic (if you've read more of Dekker's work, you will know what I mean), but... this one just doesn't cut it for being among his best work. Do your research into psych wards, dude.

Book two of a four e-book saga. Ted Dekker slowly tips his hand.

With the first book, Identity, I relished the return of mind-bending Dekker storytelling. With Mirrors, I think I'm getting a slight grasp of where he's taking us but the joy of reading Dekker is that you will double back on whatever assumptions you make many times over.

I like the pacing of this story so far. I like how this book in unveiling more of the past for Christy ... I mean Alice...perhaps Christy. These chapters fly by too soon. For those of us purchasing these e-books as they're released, the short wait between books is exhausting. (lucky you who can buy all four at once.)

Christy seems to get most of the back-story attention so far. But Austin has to get his due soon. The thing with his headaches and his mysterious past have to come to the fore soon.

I love how I'm not sure if the villains are the villains. Could it be that they truly are just trying to help them out? This is the joy of diving deep with Dekker.

Don't mistake these for full-length novels but they are worth the read!

I'm still not sure how I feel about the marketing ploy for this eBook series, but since "Mirrors" was on sale for 99 cents, I HAD to pick it up to see what happened after Book 1! It certainly didn't disappoint and with its length, I finished it in one sitting.

Dekker has a way with keeping on guessing, and in "Mirrors" I just can't figure out how things are going to turn out for Christy and Austin, but right now I'm really terrified...

Now, just to decide if I want to purchase the next eBook (Unseen (Eyes Wide Open, Book 3)) and have it now, or just buy the physical book that contains all 4 parts (Eyes Wide Open) and add it to my growing Ted Dekker collection. After finishing "Mirrors", I just might do both!

Okay, so, I am really liking this series of stories by Ted Dekker. I have finished the second book of the Eyes Wide Open series, Mirrors. A ) I am still lost...LOL. But, I am starting to get an inkling of an idea what may be happening. Watch me be wrong!

The story has very dark drama and well written. The main characters are very real and you can sense their emotions and can actually relate with them. I am beginning book three and look forward to finding myself, soon. LOL. The greatest aspect I like of this story is the fact that Ted does not spoon feed the reader with every tidbit of information. He wants you to use your imagination and wonder. I must say to Ted, this is a very good story so far! I do recommend this book to those who enjoy a good book with lots of suspense!

Freaked out. OK..one of the things we talk about for fun, my husband and I, is 'if you somehow got stuck in an insane asylum...no matter what you do to get out...they wouldn't believe you and you'd be stuck there!' Well...Dekker wrote a book about it! I love reading his books, because I know...this surface he's created...will shatter and then the real stuff gets ya! That's where I am...I'm stuck with Christy and Austin...or is it Alice and Scott??? But, where are we stuck, really??? That's the question I have Mr. Dekker...should we try to get out...or do we really want to?

Must. Keep. Reading. Next book, UP!

This book was a bit different than the first, since we are really getting into the whole psych ward thing now. I feel that not all psych wards are as terrifying as all of these books and movies make them seem, but I don't want to end up in one to find out.

After Austin, aka Scott, kills Fisher and he comes back to life unscathed, and Christy, aka Alice, starts seeing herself as completely different than she is, I am beginning to wonder if these two really are crazy. I am getting the feeling that this 'series' is not going to turn out how I think it will, and I will somehow end up feeling cheated in the end. We'll see... just purchased book three.

Oh the wait till next week (January 7th), is going to kill me.

The plot thickens a bit as Austin runs into the original "Alice" and she tells him that he sees it too, that he can see the key. It serves to just confuse him, but prove that there is something much more going on.

Meanwhile Christy is given some hypnotherapy treatment to delve deep into her past. She discovers that something has happened but she just doesn't know what.

It all culminates in a little showdown between Austin and Fisher.

Book 1: the storyline was decent. I was excited to see where it was headed.
Book 2: WHERE is this going? It's a nail biter.
Book 3: OMG this is dragging on forever, just tell us already.
Book 4: are you serious. THAT is what it's about? Possibly the most non committal ending ever. I feel so duped. Like its going to be legandary, fantastic. But no wait, let's just make it some vague Biblical ending and not really give any kind of reason for anything.
