Het luisterende oog
Pauline Paine is stokdoof, maar ze kan geweldig goed liplezen. Daardoor 'hoort' ze hoe twee mannen een roofmoord beramen. Ze vertelt haar verhaal aan miss Silver, maar die raadt haar aan de politie in te schakelen. Daar krijgt Pauline echter de kans niet meer toe; ze wordt doodgereden.

She was educated privately and at Blackheath High School in London. After the death of her first husband, George F. Dillon, in 1906, she settled in Camberley, Surrey. She married George Oliver Turnbull in 1920 and they had one daughter.
She wrote a series of 32 classic-style whodunnits featuring Miss Silver, the first of which was published in 1928, and the last in 1961, the year of her death.
Miss Silver, a retired governess-turned private detective, is sometimes compared to Jane Marple, the elderly detective created by Agatha Christie. She works closely with Scotland Yard, especially Inspector Frank Abbott and is fond of quoting the poet Tennyson.
Wentworth also wrote 34 books outside of that series.

Heel veel personages, maar spannend tot het einde.

Un agréable polar vintage avec une touche de romance, comme habituellement chez Patricia Wentworth.
J'ai bien aimé le personnage de Paulina Blaine.
"Personne n'aurait pu deviner que Paulina Paine était sourde. Mais elle déchiffrait parfaitement le mouvement des lèvres. Les deux hommes qui se retrouvèrent non loin d'elle, lors d'un vernissage, ne se rendirent compte que trop tard qu'elle avait saisi toute leur conversation."
Des rebondissements que je n'avais pas anticipés. Une bonne lecture dans une atmosphère surannée.
