Designed to build science vocabulary, each spread of this exciting book introduces an essential term and defines it in a helpful box set apart from the text. Kids will find out how air pressure creates storms, how storms surge, why weather satellites are essential for keeping people safe, and how evacuations can be managed safely.
Packed with facts and word boosters, this nonfiction book gives kids the foundational information they need to learn and understand weather science.
No Awards Appropriate Grade Levels: 3-4 This book gives a lot of information about hurricanes and information on how to measure hurricanes. It has a lot of tables throughout the book which could add some extra information. There is also a glossary included in the back. I like how much information is in this book. I also like that they have "smart words" on almost every page to help children learn about words that they do not know. The pictures and diagrams throughout the book are very good and helpful. You could use this book to teach about hurricanes, since some kids might not know a lot about them if they don't live in an area where hurricanes happen. You can also use it to teach about tables and how they help give information.
This book is part of an entire "Smart Words" series where the books all focus on different weather phenomena or different earth structures (like rocks or volcanos or caves). These books can help kids build their vocabulary while also getting them interested in science and helps teachers incorporate science in literacy centers or reading block. In my class, we used a couple of these books to demonstrate the difference between fiction and non-fiction, which is big in first grade. These books are an EXCELLENT resource for classrooms and I would highly recommend utilizing them to develop interest in science subjects.
