Lorne Simpkins #5

Guaranteed Justice

Rate this book
Retired DCI Lorne Simpkins thought she knew what she wanted when she started an animal rescue centre with her husband Tony. Although saving and retraining exploited dogs is
fulfilling, Lorne can't help but feel that something vital is missing from her life. Linda Carter is brutally raped and left for dead in an alley. By some miracle, she survives, but now she lives each day terrified by the perpetrator's final threatening words--that her sister, Fiona, will be his next victim.

The sisters decide to adopt a watch dog and contact the rescue centre. During a home check to see if the girls and their flat are suited for a German Shepherd, Lorne witnesses Linda's horrendous injuries. The young woman knows the identity of her rapist--wealthy, playboy Graham Gibson--however, the police haven't made an arrest. The shocking story turns into a life-altering moment for Lorne. She decides to become a Private Investigator, and urges the girls to let her take up their case. Little does she know that more victims will come forward to accuse Gibson of rape.

Lorne is determined to see this vicious criminal behind bars, but is anyone ever guaranteed justice?

I have a total love / hate relationship going on with this series, I think it has so many flaws in the characters and plot but at the same time I can't stop reading.

This book I think definitely has improvements in it so you can tell that the author is growing along with the series.

I will continue with the next book and see how it goes.

Three stars.

At the time is posting this series is available on Kindle Unlimited.

These tales just don't work for me. There's no depth to the characters and the plot is mostly one-dimensional and so so predictable. I didn't get any intensity of emotion from the rape victims or any real sense of what is driving the perpetrator. The description of food at mealtimes is reminiscent of Enid Blyton as is the hatching of a devious plan by the villain. The finale is quite frankly ridiculous.

This is the fifth book in the Justice series and it is a brilliant addition to the series, it is slower paced that the previous books but Lorne has had quite a lot on her plate to deal with at the moment so she is entitled to a well earned rest!

I really enjoyed that Lorne was able to follow her heart in this story and set up an animal rescue centre (not a spoiler as it is in the books blurb). She wants to take a step back following the events in the previous book and the impact that has had on her family life so this is the ideal opportunity to engage in one of her passions whilst remaining close to home.

Although anyone who follows the series will know that Lorne won’t be able to resist anything tempting that she comes across regarding people in need and wanting assistance through her newly set up PI business – and that is indeed what happens here.

I really enjoyed the plot as it developed and I liked being able to see more of Lorne’s private and home life too with Tony now he is back from his previous mission in Afghanistan. There have been quite a few changes and it is interesting to see how these could affect their relationship.

You can read the book as a standalone if you are not looking to read the rest of the books, but it works much better if it is read as part of the series if you get an opportunity to pick them up – they are best read in order too if you do follow the series as there are underlying themes and stories that run through the books.

Five stars from me for this one – already finished the next book – loving this series!! Very highly recommended!!

This one was a bit of a disappointment to me. I thoroughly enjoyed the first four novels in this series, but this one felt a little off somehow and not quite as satisfying.

I loved the idea of the rescue centre, but adding in the PIing on top of everything else seemed a little excessive, especially when Lorne expected her elderly father and teenage daughter to shoulder much of the burden of looking after the centre while she investigated cases. The relationship between Lorne and Tony was heartwarming and sweet and I enjoyed their easygoing banter.

The situation with Blackie, the beautiful, sweet, lovable German shepherd, moved me to tears and made me angry since I'm such a softie when it comes to dogs.

And, the ending....I think that was the biggest source of my disappointment in this book. It just seemed so...so unrealistic and unbelievable and totally out-of-character for someone of Lorne's commitment and dedication to upholding the law.

Anyway, with all of that being said, I do intend to continue on with the series and hope the next book meets my expectations a little more than this one did.

I read Guaranteed Justice by M A Comley as part of the Deadly Dozen: 12 Mysteries/Thrillers set. The story starts out with the rape of Linda Carter by Graham Gibson, a wealthy playboy. The police do nothing.

After surviving the brutal rape, Linda returns to the apartment she shares with her sister Fiona and their roommate Ami. Fearing that Gordon will attack her sister, Linda decides to adopt a dog from an animal sanctuary run by Lorne Simpkins, an ex detective inspector. When Lorne comes to the house for the home inspection, she notices Lorne’s injuries, and Lornes offers her services as a private investigator. This is the first case for her and her husband Tony’s new PI business.

It is interesting to see how the plot develops as more women come forward as Gibson’s victims. Unfortunately, I found the goings on at Lorne’s animal shelter and her decision to let her father and daughter take over the shelter while she and her husband started the P.I. Business tedious, too convenient, and a distraction from the story.

Though this is the fifth in the Justice Series, I did not feel as if I were missing information by not having read the prior four novels. The story stands on its own and does not require a lot of back fill, which I really liked. This is a good light read.

Another great book by M.A. Conley. I really enjoy Lorne as a character. This book in the series had a different spin. Lorne has decided to be a Private investigator. It was a great, quick read. I couldn't put the book down.

Rubbish

I love d the first four books. Lorne Simpkins was a strong woman involved in high profile cases, supported by the various men in her life.
This book is a mockery of the character illustrated in previous novels in this series.
Once again she has left the police force and decided to run an animal rescue.
An awful lot of work goes into starting an animal shelter, but she seems to think food and water exercise and picking up faeces and that's it. She places a dog in a home where two of the three flatmates want a dog for protection, whilst the third is terrified of dogs and doesn't want a dog in the flat. She is badgered by her flatmates, into she agrees to having the dog. She is then told she will be responsible for looking after it, as the others will be at work all day!
Something a reputable rescue wouldn't consider, the dog is then poisoned and dies. Not realistic.
Then she announces she is going to be a private investigator, and Tony will become one as well. As for the rescue, well she informs her father that he will be responsible for looking after the animals. When he stated that he couldn't do it on his own, Lorne volunteered her daughter to help at weekends.
Meanwhile a serial rapist is on the loose and Lorne is rely on Katy & Sean to do her checking up, utilising police records.
Finally, a criminal is killed as revenge from the rape of three girls and the death of the dog. He is abducted, tortured and then murdered. His body is buried on a farm. She conceals her knowledge, despite appeals for information, breaking all the rules she had previous upheld. She appears to be either elated or crying, will a bipolar diagnosis follow?
A strange book out of kilter with the previous four books.

Not sure how i feel about this one!

Two wrongs don't make a right! This was a well written book about a very triggering and horrible crime. I had a hard time getting into the story because of those reasons. But that's a personal issues, sometimes things just don't click, and this story was one of those for me. And there ending didn't line up with the integrity of the characters in any if this series I've read, nor in the Justice Again series. Its not put more of the author, bit i hope there is not more like this.

A short and sweet book

It took awhile to get into the book, but it sprained into action. Lorne had too much on her plate to handle. I like how friends step up to the plate to help. Now a rapist got what he deserved and now to live with what the girls done, it's up to them. Justice has been served!!

Had lots of twists but I have mixed feelings on the plot which is difficult to believe with them running an animal rescue with only 3 people then decide for 2 of them to get other jobs as PIs.
But wanted to continue with the series to find out what happens.

Guaranteed Justice

What a great read.. And what a great ending!!! I thought after the first gripping stories in the Justice series, that the the next one would be mild. Nothing is further from the truth. Love the career change. Hope it continues¿?

Lorne starts up a farm for homeless animals. Then she decides to start up a PI business. Her first case is a real bad rape. It has many twists and turns and a real surprise ending.

Not the best of MA Comley’s books, I found it dragging out and did not grab me as the others had. Still an interesting read

Truly lame story with one dimensional characters. What angered me the most was how all women in this story were referred to as “girls” . Really??!! Not reading any more of this series.

Great book, fast read.

I have really enjoyed getting to know the characters in the Justice series. Book 5 in the series had a good plot with enough suspense to keep my attention. I’m sure to continue reading this series though to the last book.
