I absolutely loved this book, although I usually dislike historical fiction. Here, the historical details of everyday life are fascinating, the story is really strong and engaging, and the background historical information is full of interest. In addition, I spend a lot of time in Oxfordshire so I know the area well although I have not yet visited Sulgrave-I now plan to do so as soon as possible! The Author's illustrations really add to the enjoyment of the story too- what a talented woman, Cynthia Harnett was. Finally, the coincidence of the fact that the ancestors and family home of Princess Diana play a prominent part in the story adds to the fascination.

An excellent fictional account of the escape of Queen Elizabeth 1st from imprisonment in Woodstock Manor aided in this historical fantasy retelling by the 'locksmithing' talents of a young Francis Washington and Doctor Dee.

Compelling, beautifully written and illustrated by the author.

Really 'to-read-again' - read this as a child, really liked it and have recently seen that it's been republished by Jane Nissen Books. Recommended.

My favourite Harnett book so far! A compelling plot as well as the rich historical detail that is characteristic of Harnett. I loved the way the young Elizabeth (the future Elizabeth I) made an appearance. Another character is the scholar John Dee, whose portrait is in the Ashmolean museum.
