**Words With Fiends is approximately 10,000 words/27 pages**
When Morgan receives an anonymous invite to play his favorite mobile word game, he readily accepts. He quickly finds himself wishing he hadn’t. As the rules of the game bend and twist, so does his mind. The search to discover the mystery opponent’s identity soon becomes his whole world, but some questions are best left unanswered.
When an ill-fated joint writing venture went horribly awry, mild mannered engineer Matt Schiariti decided to strike out on his own. The result? Selling his short story 'Hollow' to Padwolf Publishing for inclusion in the recently published anthology, 'Apocalypse 13' in late 2012. Gaining confidence from seeing his first ever published story in print, he plowed on and dove into the self-publishing pool with the dark fiction/horror short story, 'Words With Fiends'.
Matt has always been a voracious reader and reviewer of books and, after 37 years, has decided to make the transition to writer. Better late than never. He lives in New Jersey with his wife, 1.75 children, crazy dog, and overly personable guinea pig. He's written two novels in 2012 which is he currently editing and continues to work on short stories. I think of this short story as a grocery list story... What I mean is when your spouse goes shopping, takes a list and comes back with everything on the list and nothing else. Sure, you're grateful, but if she'd gotten you a candy bar as a surprise it would have been awesome.
In a nutshell, this story didn't give me anything unexpected. For the first three quarters I thought it might be something along the lines of Ray Bradbury's THE FRUIT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BOWL, but this story simply went from A to B for me. Nothing special, but not bad - sadly, I don't think I'll remember anything about it in a few months.
Certain games available for play on Smartphones can be a bit addicting, such as the uber popular 'Words With Friends', which is Morgan's problem. Morgan has another problem, one which weighs heavily on his mind as of late. While out drinking to try and ease his troubled thoughts, Morgan receives a game request from the enigmatic SeeShell, who plays words not allowed by the game and sends Morgan messages that slowly spiral him into paranoia and drives him to the unspeakable. Very well written, this story grips you from the get-go and doesn't let go. You can feel the tension mount with each page until it comes to its perfect conclusion. If you like your Horror short and sweet like I do, pick this one up, it doesn't disappoint.
I've never read the author before, but won't hesitate to do so again. This is an entertaining and spooky novelette that knows that the enjoyment is in the tension before the reveal (the reader knows what's going on almost from the start of the book - it's watching the inevitable catch up with the main protagonist that's half the fun here). The story made me nostalgic for Stephen King's earlier works, and reminds me a lot of his immediately engaging characters, and the slow mashing of a detailed and recognisable real world with things that should not be. A very solid story.
I’ll go ahead and say that I’m a friend of the author, but I tried not to let that interfere with my review. I wouldn’t have posted this review if I didn’t genuinely like it. As with most of my reviews, I’ll post the praise first and any criticisms second.
Praise-wise: This is a nice page turner. It’s short and sweet, but keeps you wondering exactly what will happen next. There are some semi-familiar tropes in here, but they’re used well. I rather liked the inclusion of the game “Words with Friends”, as social media is something that can often be used to good effect specifically because the Internet allows for almost complete anonymity. The ending was rather decent as well, with the roles turned around like they were. Criticism-wise: I must admit that the story was a little slow to start and get immersed in. When I did get hooked I was absolutely hooked, but it just takes a while to get there.
Overall this was rather well done and as someone who has read one of Schiariti’s previous short stories, it shows that his writing has grown and matured quite a bit. It was definitely a fun short read.
SPOILER BONUS:
Since this is Goodreads and I can write exactly what I liked about the story and hide the spoilers, I'm writing an extra bit for the spoilers. If you don't want to read them, skip this section and read the above review.
I have to say that I wasn't entirely expecting SeeShell to be the girl Morgan ran over. Part of me was expecting it to be his girlfriend Diane, who had become obsessed with the dead girl and maybe overheard him talking about it in his sleep or maybe became possessed by the dead girl. The ending was a nice turnabout, with Diane forced to go through the same situation that Michelle's brother had to experience.

I cannot believe that this is the first story that Matt Schiariti wrote! Words with Fiends had everything a short story should; A plot with a definite ending, well developed characters, and an intriguing storyline. I’m floored by how amazing good the writing turned out to be!
My review: One of the reasons I wanted to read Words with Fiends is because I used to be addicted to the game it's based on. The second reason being that I’m a huge fan of anything horror. It did not disappoint! Words with Fiends reminded me of the stories featured on the television show Tales from the Crypt. I would love to see this story made into a short film, it would be terrifying!
The suspense and horror elements in this story were phenomenal! I totally wasn’t expecting it to end the way it did, it kept me guessing the entire time. The irony of this tale will chill you to the bone! Let’s safely assume that if I get an anonymous menacing invite from Words with Friends anytime soon, I may die from fear. (I may even uninstall the game from my cell phone until my fears subside.)
This is a definite read for anyone who loves a good suspense/horror story! Stop whatever you’re doing and go download it now! It is a quick, but satisfying read you don’t want to miss!
I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review. Thank you Matt!
Words with Fiends is a short story written by Matt Schiariti and I will admit that I had no real idea what to expect as I had never read anything written by Matt before. I was pleasantly surprised by the strong voice throughout the entire piece. It’s a great story with a solid premise and great timing. I loved the usage of a common cultural experience as a backdrop to the horror contained within. With that connection in place, I found myself really feeling for Morgan, the main character. His self-torture and palpable fear were both very much in tune with the story matter as it unfolded. It’s a great short and I look forward to reading more from Matt in the future.
*Claps* Bravo!! First, I want to applaud Matt Schiariti for writing such a wonderful short story. Seriously, you made my Halloween so much better this year! It was captivating, spooky, eerie, and just plain brilliant!
You know how hard it is to write a good story? Imagine how hard it is to make a short story! I could never write anything as wonderful as this. I really enjoyed this story and everything that occurred in it.
This book made me want to play Words With Friends again. Strange, huh? Considering how that worked for the main character at the end.
When I first heard about this book and saw the cover, I had no idea what to expect. I wondered how a social media game factored into the story, but I absolutely loved it. Lots of mystery and suspense, I loved that I didn't know what was coming next. Great way of incorporating social media into a good story really enjoyed reading this story and found myself wanting more and wishing it was longer. I recommend this story for anyone who enjoys suspense and a good story.
For a Short Horror Story this book was great! Matt really pulls you into this story. You have stalking through a popular game but things are definitely not as you expect them to be. I was intrigued since I started reading and hardly put it down. If you want a short read that will make you think and give you shivers at the same time this is definitely the book for you. I would definitely recommend reading this! :O)
amazing book the twists and turns kept me wondering what was going to happen next. The ending definetely wasnt what i expected, at the end i was like wow what just happened?! I look forward to reading more books by the author.
I love a book or movie that I can’t figure out and this was one of those books! I really enjoyed reading it this evening. I can’t wait to try another one of his books.
This was awesome! I love short horror stories, and this was an amazing one. (I write scary stories myself, so i like to think I know a good one when i see it. 😊)
The writing was excellent and i really liked the watching out main character on his journey. I loved the inclusion of a popular mobile game as a main focus for the scares. 😊 I'm a gal from a generation that grew up along with phones. Seeing them used so heavily in a horror story is honestly disturbing!

I think we all have ONE game, one guilty pleasure - linked with our social networking so we have hundreds of possible partners at a moment's notice. I had my Words With Friends phase, and a shorter affair with Hanging With Friends, ('MY Game' was Scramble). That pang of excitement every time you hear a new notification beep, or vibration. What if that pang of excitement turned into a heart-stopping panic? Your opponent knows your dirty little secret and is getting more aggressive with each new word! Morgan is as addicted to his Words With Friends app as Alex Baldwin! When he accepts a game invitation from 'SeaShell', he soon realizes that this is no ordinary game, it's something much more sinister. That girl he was with the other night, they we're out in the middle of nowhere - nobody could have seen what happened, right? 'SeaShell' is becoming increasingly more hostile and accusatory with each new post, and Morgan realizes that SOMEONE KNOWS WHAT HE DID. This is where we ride along with Morgan on his rapid decent to madness.
The author, Matt Schiariti, took the feel of an old Twilight Zone episode and blended it with today's technology - and he couldn't have done it better. It could have easily veered off track - right into Cheeseville, to become an entirely different kind of story. (Not saying that's bad, cheesey can be fun!) But, he kept it classy - a classic feel with a modern spin, and I can picture this as the first in a series of similarly themed stories - if he wanted to explore that route.

#FunFact: Matt Schiariti contributed to The Carnival 13, benefiting SCARES THAT CARE, with some of our other favorites - Dan Dillard, Rebecca Besser, and Armand Rosamilia. F³ - Freaks, Fantasy and Fear!
Sometimes, the most terrifying monsters are those lurking within us.
Morgan is a fairly ordinary guy, with a regular job and a devoted girlfriend, who enjoys frequenting the local bar afterhours. However, Morgan is carrying a secret. A secret so great, it’s overwhelming him…
As with his previous short story, “Hollow: Be Careful What You Wish For” (collected in the APOCALYPSE 13 anthology), Matt Schiariti proves he has a knack for creating sympathetic characters rooted in a real-life setting, with supernatural elements nicely integrated. Morgan isn’t inherently a bad person, so much as someone who was driven to make bad decisions by guilt and fear. If he was a man totally without conscience, the story would have turned out very differently.
One of the author’s greatest strengths is dialogue, and his characters converse in a way that’s realistic and believable. The scenes in the bar could be happening in practically any bar down the street. And the inclusion of the popular “Words with Friends” game as the catalyst is very effective and further highlights this modern environment. The title’s play on words is an amusing touch.
A fun, well-paced, suspenseful read. I hope to see more stories from Matt Schiariti.
Matt Schiariti has done it again!!! He has completely and utterly floored me once again with his writing. I am not a person who is overly thrilled about short stories, due to their inevitable lack of development and detail, however Words With Fiends as thrown that feeling out the window, making me think that it is possible to write an AMAZING story in so little page. This short story was jammed pack with an emotion that only the skilled can manage in a 27 page short story. This is one of the creepier short stories I have read giving a twinge of horror through out it that kept the reader guessing to what was going to happen. As the ending of the story unravels at the author still manages to throw a curve ball that many will not see coming.
Matt Schiariti is my number one author for the year, who I just can't get enough of. The sad part is I have already read all that has been published by him, so for now there is a little piece of my literary heart that is missing and can not be filled by any other author's writing. Hopefully i wont have to wait too long for it to be whole again. HINT HINT MR. SCHIARITI!!
The title of this story intrigued me as I am a HUGE Words With Friends fan. I figured the title, along with the cover had something to do with the game. It does. The main character, Morgan, plays the game with his wife and his friends. It is this game that causes Morgan to have anxiety and stress and to face what he has done.
The story opens with Morgan at the bar getting wasted. There is also a "Missing" poster and an ACCIDENT that he eludes to that has something to do with his predicament. You kind of know what happened before he admits it, but it's what happens in the story that is a shock. This Morgan character has got some major demons!!
I really liked this story and the way it was written. It reminded me of Stephen King stories or Dean Koontz type stuff. It was brilliantly written and I LOVED the ending!! I would definitely read more of what Mr. Schiariti writes if this is an indication of what to expect from him in the future. It says he has 2 more books that are out and I will definitely be getting those to read (and review) very soon!!
Guilt, Insanity and words with fiends... This short book is a good way to pass the time and or just get lost in something well written, exciting, gut wrenching and spooky fun. I loved it. It was well written. Didn't jump around, or leave me hanging. If this book were a food it would be a fulfilling appetizer. Leaving me with wanting more from this author to see what other grand short stories they have created. I found them through facebook and so glad that I did. I will be looking into more books from this author and hoping to see him expand and grow! The story had me hooked from start to finish. Every scene perfectly worded so I could see it all like a horror/suspense movie in my head. I love it when an author can do that without being long winded or loosing me by not explaining enough. A wonderfully woven short story that dives into Morgan's insanity and leaves you questioning your own.... well done.
I'm not a very big fan of suspense/horror/thrillers, but this one got me on the edge of my seat all the way 'till the end. It was a bit of a slow start for me, but once the really good bits started happening, I couldn't put it down. Yes, it's a short story, but it really pulls the reader into it. If you have seen "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Pretty Little Liars," you are going to LOVE this book! Matt's writing style really gets the reader to really pay attention to every detail. His vision put into words will make you feel as though you were inside his head as he typed every single word. At least, that's how it felt for me. It kept me guessing to the very end, and the ending reminded me so much of "Drag Me To Hell." But for you to see why I mentioned these movies/TV show, you WILL HAVE TO read this book. You'll see EXACTLY what I mean. Great job, Matt! I really loved it! Though it is making me rethink about playing Words with Friends now ;)
I stumbled upon this book after reading another wonderful book by this great author. And since I am a huge Words with Friends fan and player, I could not pass up reading this short story. The main character is as avid of a player of the game as I am; however, he has more to hide. Throughout the book he is playing with not just his friends, family, and co-workers, but now an unknown person. Playing with random people isn’t so bad, until you start seeing the words being played. At first Morgan thinks one of his friends have found a hack to mess with him, but even when he stops playing that game, the other player is still able to take their turn. I tried to figure out this story as I was reading, thinking I knew what was really going on, but boy was I wrong! The twists at the end of this book will catch you by surprise, and it is definitely worth the read to find out for yourself.
The title of this short story drew my interest, a take-off of the very popular game, Words With Friends. A horror story based on a computer word game? I'm in! And I wasn't disappointed.
In a story where the reader knows more of what is going on than the main character does, it was great fun watching him unravel and devolve into madness. Well written, entertaining, good characterization, this short story packed a great little wallop. I even found myself cringing at one point. But I won't give anything away. You'll have to (and should) read for yourself.
On the technical side there were a couple of minor mistakes that did not detract from my enjoyment of the story.
This is a great first outing from a promising new writer. I'm looking forward to what he does next.
I'm not one to really read the horror genre but after my friend heckled me relentlessly I decided to give this short story a try. Imagine my suprise when I was literally sucked into the story. I couldn't put this book down no matter how hard I tried. I managed to finish it in just a few short hours. Matt Schiariti managed to hold my attention throughout the whole story. I stayed in suspense throughout the whole story, my heart raced and I even caught myself yelling at the main character telling him what to do and what not to do. I felt like I was actually there with that character. I absolutely loved Matt's writing style. I would give this book 50 stars but alas it only goes up to 5. Great job Matt Schiariti I will definitely be reading more of your work!
Words with Fiends is a short, CREEPY, at times funny, story by Matt Schiariti. I went to bed with this little treasure. BAD IDEA!!! I am not a huge horror fan but I must say that Mr. Schiariti can scare me anytime. I loved this story. Well written, characters were fully developed and it had the scary factor. I always can tell if the story is good if the next day I am still thinking about it. This is one of those little goodies that stay with you. I have talked about it all day and I swear I did not want to even look at the beeping of my phone today. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Schiariti. Texas Hugs and Happy Reading!!!
This short story was gifted to me by the author for an honest review. Thank You!
Morgan is at a bar trying to drown himself in Scotch. He has an immediate adverse reaction when he sees a man posting up a MISSING sign. Distracting him from his troubles is a game of Words with Friends.
The writing is so clever in this story. I was giggling through most of it. The more serious parts I thought were very compelling.
I thought this was a very interesting idea. Mysterious messages from the beyond using a trendy game like Words with Friends? A modern, redemption tale? Very clever.
Words with Fiends is definitely a creepy and mysterious read that gave a modern internet game some WOW spook! Any readers out there looking for something thrilling and chilling with a twist will enjoy losing themselves in the pages.
Words with friends is a very addictive and fun game that many play with friends and family. Some even make new friends. In Morgan's case it became a nightmare. A very creepy one at that. With various twists and turns a reader will NOT expect!
A 3.5 rating rounded to a solid 4. I'll definitely look to this author if I'm ever in the mood for a good scare.
I admit it. I read this book after I read Ghosts of Demons Past. Actually I waited about 30 min before I started, lol. It is a good short story, creepy, but not overly scary. Along the lines of R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series but for adults.
It is the story about a man with a problem, not the Words with Friends addiction, but another one. One that will haunt him for the rest of his life. I will not spoil the story, I definitely suggest you read it it and discover what a great writer Matt Schiariti really is.
