Breathe Again #2

Unbearable Guilt

Rate this book
Kane Archer hasn’t always been tormented; he hasn’t always hated himself or been full of rage. He hasn’t always lived his life with an overpowering sense of guilt that threatens to destroy him.

There was a time when his life was different. He was optimistic; he smiled and laughed; he loved passionately; he had it all.

Kane was content—until the unthinkable took it all away.

Two and a half years later and still reeling from his fiancée’s death, Kane returns to the one place he vowed he’d never visit again—Camden—with the promise to find the men who killed her and bring them to justice, regardless of the cost.

Emotionally numb, stricken by guilt, and haunted by the events preceding Aimee’s death, the last thing Kane wanted was to meet someone he connected with; someone who made him feel again.

As Kane gets closer to those responsible for Aimee’s death, he is thrown a curveball when he discovers a secret so devastating it rocks his world and threatens to destroy his chance at happiness.

Whitney Jareau packed up her life when tragedy struck her family, leaving everything behind. Finally free from the persistent and domineering family that insisted she do the one thing she couldn’t, Whitney found peace in Camden.

Two years later, her family wants her to come home and will stop at nothing to get her there. Wearing her heart on her sleeve for Kane Archer, a man so gorgeous it hurts to see the pain he carries, Whitney fights her family and refuses to return home to carry out their wishes.

Can Whitney stay strong without giving in to the demands of her family?

Can Kane let go of the past and move forward with the woman who brought him back to life?

Or, will he walk away from her and carry the burden of UNBEARABLE GUILT

I was ripped from heaven with an angel, and tossed into the fiery pit of hell by myself with no way out. I wouldn't ever allow myself to be released from its relentless grip.

Ladies, do you like your heroes brooding, tortured, alpha, with a dash of asshole? Well then meet Kane Archer.

Two and a half years ago, Kane lost everything that ever mattered to him. Watching your fiance die will scar a man, and Kane certainly carries the worst scar imaginable since her death; the guilt of being responsible for her death.

The only feeling stronger that the guilt that permanently eats at him, is the drive for revenge and finding the men responsible for the events that led to his fiance's death. Forced to return to the place where it all started and the last place he wants to be, Camden, the town he grew up in and the town he left after Aimee's death. Treated as the social pariah, everyone it town still suspects him of being his fiance's killer, even his former best friend and now cop, Luke Gunner. Shunned by everyone, the last thing Kane expects is the attention of one beautiful blonde.

Whitney can't help but feel attracted to Kane, the man is utterly delicious after all, even if he does exude danger from ever pore.
The things I'd do to him would make my parents roll over in their graves. Though, in my defense, you can't be that hot and not have women admire the hell out of you or your body - especially when that body wears the shit out of a pair of jeans and a Slipknot shirt, and looked like Kane

At first Kane things Whitney is just another ditzy girl that's attracted to him almost as much as she's intimidated by him. But soon he begins to see that there is much more to the woman than first meets the eye. Kane is not looking for another woman; he can't. How can he move one when every single time he closes his eyes, all he can see is the corpse of his dead fiance.

Whitney sees beyond what the townspeople think, deep down to the vulnerable and broken man that lies beneath the tough and tatted exterior.

But Whitney has something she's running from that is slowly catching up with her. Can she be strong enough to stand by Kane and help him heal, or will his guilt leave them both broken?

My Thoughts
This book gripped me from the first few pages. That epilogue doesn't ease you in. It throws you right into the deep end, and doesn't spare any gory detail. Wow.

I absolutely loved that it was written in dual First Person POV. It helped so much more to actually be inside Kane's head and feel everything that he's feeling. I'm not going to lie, his actions at times made me feel bipolar. I went from

to

But then again, I have this thing for the assholes. As much as I wanted to throttle Kane at times, my heart also broke for him.

I was a little afraid at first that I would not like Whitney's. In the first few chapters she comes across as slightly ditzy, and all she thinks about is how absolutely hot Kane is. I get it, the man can fill out a pair of jeans. I don't need it reiterated at every chance. But I suppose such is the brilliance of Emma Grayson and her character development since she was able to make the reader see her the same way Kane did at first. So when the sudden change to her personality finally comes about, you're left just as pleasantly surprised as Kane was.

As much as I hate to compare any books or authors, since I think that they deserve to be judged individually, I couldn't help but get a little Kristen Ashley vibe here. Now don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing at all. Maybe it was all the "babes" and Kane's mannerisms? This book reminded me slightly of At Peace, which I really enjoyed. But it was also a very unique writing style and story, so it does stand very well on its own.

I found some of the nicknames that the girlfriends call themselves a little strange. I don't have many friends that I refer to as "baby", but that may just be me LOL.

As much as I loved Whitney's tough girl personality, I really wished she hadn't forgiven Kane as easily as she did. Yes he's tortured and broody, but he was a straight up asshole to her at times. I wanted him to work for it, grovel a bit.

My other minor quibble is Luke. I hated the way he treated Kane. While Kane never corrected his perception of him, it still killed me to see the way that he treated him. But those very few things aside, I truly enjoyed the hell out of this story.

What a gut wrenching, action packed, suspenseful and steamy as hell ride this book was. I enjoyed every minute of it, and eagerly anticipate any future books by this author. It's always great when you can be pleasantly surprised by a new to you author.

Kane Archer is a man on a mission.

In Unbeautifully Loved Kane’s character is a bit of a mystery to readers. I have to give kudos to Emma Grayson because she leaves you wanting more of him that’s for sure. So when the chance to read his story popped up in my inbox I jumped on it!

 photo UNBEARABLEGUILTCOLLAGE1FINAL_zpsf377946f.jpg

“I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about Kane…almost like he’s hiding something. Something he doesn’t want people to know.” -Lexie

Kane Archer has carried the heavy burden of his fiancée Aimee’s death for two and a half years and he is not the only one. It seems the whole town blames him as the dirty looks and whispers of “murderer” follow him everywhere he goes in Camden. What others think mean nothing to Kane. He is determined to find the man responsible for taking Aimee’s life, as far as he is concerned everyone else can kiss his a**.

Whitney Jareau moved to the small town of Camden to find herself after an unfortunate tragedy strikes her family. Two years past and her family is now looking for her return. She on the other hand does not plan to go back. Still, they want her and make it very clear that she will come back whether she wants to or not. However her presence is not all that is required by them…

‘He was a quarter mystery, half strong and masculine and the rest sexy.’ -Whitney

Whitney is not the first woman Kane has been attracted to since Aimee’s death but she is the first woman to feed more than just his sexual appetite. He knows there is more to her than what meets the eye. That more is something he wants, admittedly or not.

’My mind was made up and there was no changing it. Just as there was no changing the fact that the love of my life was dead, and I would carry the guilt of her death for as long as I lived.’ -Kane

His heart is buried in guilt. Aimee’s death affects Kane in a big way, it’s sad to watch it play out on the pages and is just as devastating to read. In a flashback we find out what happened on that horrid day as you relive it with Kane. All of his memories are not bad though, readers get flashbacks of some sweet moments he had with Aimee too which is a plus. On the flip side what I loved was how Emma Grayson did not allow Aimee to haunt Whitney nor weigh her down in any way. Instead Whit embraced his past love and in a way she helped him move forward.

Kane and Whit organically come together which makes the story that much more lovable. She meets him while she is working at Beans, a local coffee shop. A place he visits every day. They’re both attracted to one another and he finds it adorable how she gets all nervous around him. She takes notice to how the town’s people react to Kane’s presence and recognizes that it is the opposite of her own reaction. Whit has heard the whispers only she doesn’t know the facts so she re-frames from drawing conclusions. Once these two finally get together it’s obvious that there is more to them then either is willing to confess.

The heat level by the way is FIRE! For those wondering **wink, wink**

‘From that first day in Beans, I had wanted to know what she tasted like, what she felt like molded to my body, if her tongue tangling with mine did anything to me, and what her hands smoothing over my skin felt like.
And it felt just as I thought it would.
Like sweet, beautiful heaven.’
-Kane

4.5-5 stars!! ♡♥

Unbearable Guilt knocked it out of the ballpark for me!! I LOVED it!! I had been waiting for Kane’s story ever since book one when he had saved Lexie and was even more intrigued when Lukas had mentioned that he was dangerous and had something to do with his fiancées death. After that, I was SOLD and there was no going back for me. EVER.

“Nothing is more wretched than the mind of a man conscious of guilt”

So as you guys know from Unbeautifully Loved and my last paragraph, two years and a half ago Kane lost his entire world: his friends, the community, and most importantly: his fiancée, Aimee.

“There was no changing the fact the love of my life was dead, and I would carry the guilt of her death for as long as I lived.”

After that, he is shunned by the entire town (and even Lukas) and is labeled a murderer. Not to mention, he holds an immense amount of guilt for Aimee’s death and makes it his purpose to track down the people responsible and make them pay.

He now vows no more relationships with women. Only unattached strings of hot one night stands.

That is, until he meets barista/gym worker, Whitney Jareau, waltzes into his life and all of his previous ideals are shot to hell and are constantly challenged.

So, Whitney.

Whitney Jareau moved to Camden after tragedy struck and she had lost her parents and “brother”. She tries to make a new start of things until the demands of her family start coming back to haunt her and threaten her budding relationship with Kane.

Now faced with a man who wants no connection to her and new discoveries that threaten to demolish all that Whitney’s ever believed, what will Whitney do? And will she give in to her family’s demanding decree?

Moreover... with the murderer’s of Aimee much closer to base than Kane thought, will it change his ordeals with Whitney or shatter it?

With secrets, lies, revelations, and betrayal in the air it’s going to be a heck of a ride!

Will Whitney be the one to give Kane his life back and find redemption for the one he had failed in the past? Will Kane be able to let go of the pain, anguish, hatred, disgust, and heartbreak that’s he’s carried all these years and be able to start over and breathe once again?

He’s well in for the fight of his life!

My verdict: Man, I FREAKIN’ LOVED this book!! Albeit, it was slow at parts (like when Kane went all into his hunter/business mode where I admittedly skimmed over) and then there were moments where I wanted to grab Kane’s head and beat it with a stick!! He was so dang stubborn and acted like a jacka** to Whitney at times!!

And as for Whitney, boy did I think that only Kane had problems!! Whitney may not hold any sort of guilty conscious but after the sh** she goes through and finds out in this book, I think she deserve a lifetime shot supply of whiskey (her favorite alcoholic beverage) for messed up family f*ckery of the year!!

I liked her immensely though and thought she was even funny at times. I mean, just the way from the very first chapter we get introduced to her when she was checking Kane and then at the time where she was once again drooling over and daydreaming about him at the gym cracked me up!:

“To be that band across his large bicep”, “To be that towel and water bottle”…
“How’s that book?” Kane’s voice broke through my thoughts.
-“Tanned and muscular,” I whispered out loud, then looked up to see Kane standing in front of my desk-sweat dripping down his chest, an amused smirk spreading across his lips.
-"Interesting"
-"Why’s that interesting?"
-“Because, that’s a magazine, not a book, darling.”

buahahaha! lol!

I now can’t wait for Kessel’s story which will be book three!! It looks to me that he might be paired up with that mysterious bartender, Ryhon, that he was shown to be having a heated argument with!! Hmm, I wonder how they know each other?

I'm also hoping for a Zane (Whitney’s playboy older bro) and Basil book!! As well as a Mollie and Adam? Or her and Thaddeus? And or Thaddeus and (??) story?

Gosh, the possibilities!

Bravo, Emma Grayson!! I already want more!!

Book – Unbearable Guilt (Breathe Again #2)
Author – Emma Grayson
Publication Date – February 24, 2014
Type – No Cliffhanger Series
Genre – Romance, New Adult
Rating – 4 out of 5 Stars

Book provided by Author (Release Blitz) in exchange for an honest review.

Review
There were times throughout this book that I felt like I was reading a Kristen Ashley book – with all the “babe, darling, baby, etc.” And the Alpha brooding male that doesn’t talk much….yup yup. I enjoyed this book and loved how it all came together to form a completed intricate puzzle.

It took me awhile at first to remember the back-story of Kane and Aimee from Ms. Grayson’s first book but it all came flooding back with some flashbacks from Kane. Well done Ms. Grayson! Very ingenious and how it played into the story was subtle that you didn’t even know that the author was refreshing our memories.

Did I get pissed while reading?….HELL YEAH – I laughed when Kane was being a dick to others, but when he diverted that attitude toward Whitney – OH NO – I got pissed at him and wished I could have put my fist through the E-reader to bop him in the head. Whitney was my girl…but damn did that girl have some majorly fucked up problems with her family.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story of Kane and Whitney along with meeting Kane’s crew!

Re-Cap
Kane is back in Camden and he is searching for the one who was responsible for Aimee’s death. The town and his ex-best friend blame him for her death. He doesn’t understand why he is still there except for this pretty blonde who fills his order every morning at the coffee house. Kane doesn’t want to feel this way toward Whitney but something continues to pull at him even though he knows that she deserves better than the likes of him. Up to this point Kane brings girls home and because of the past crippling his thoughts, he can never finish the act. We see his dickish ways when he demands the bitches GET OUT. He knows that Whitney isn’t that type of girl and vows to stay away from her….but for how long?

Just when the two of them finally try to make a go together….the shit hits the fan and each one of them must decide what to do next. Want to know the devastating facts Kane finds out? Want to know the secrets of Whitney’s family?

Read the book.

Wrap-Up
Another winner from Ms. Grayson! Definitely a must read especially if you have already read the first one in this series. I can’t wait for the next one and the next one and the one after that…I want to know more about the team who has come to Camden!

Over all I thought this was a good read. A bit predictable, a bit hot, and a rushed romance.

I feel most of the book was inner dialogue and flash backs for Kane. They didn't really interact that much in the book to fall in love I feel.

The other issue I had was him telling her he was never "with the chicks he brought home from the bar. Well yeah you were, you just couldn't finish. You still had sex with no happy ending. That to me equals you were with them. She never questioned it either. Just took his word.

4 "The Truth Will Set You Free" stars

This will be short and sweet.....

For me, this one was way better than the first book.

It wasn't as predictable as the first, granted I was able to figure out what was happening with this story as well. I did enjoy the drama a little better in this one & I liked how everything came full circle. There was a much better flow to the unraveling of secrets.

I really liked the heroine in this book. She was strong, sweet, kind, & a bad ass all wrapped into a tiny little package.

Kane was also a well developed hero that was slightly fucked up in the head from past traumas in his life. We get to see him fighting his past demons, looking to bury his guilt and finally get revenge against the people who essentially destroyed his whole world.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. I will be continuing on with the rest of this series for Kessel & I'm assuming the heroine will be Ryhon.

Review: I was given a copy of Unbearable Guilt by Reading bliss for an honest review. Kane is tall, dark and mysterious. Kane holds a lot of guilt. His girlfriend was killed in a car accident and people think it was his fault. Kane wasn’t expecting to meet anyone that would make him feel again. He wasn’t trying to find a connection with anyone. As Kane starts to figure out who is responsible for Aimee’s death he is thrown a curveball when he discovers a secret that is devastating and threatens to ruin his chance at happiness. Whitney packed up her life after a tragedy hit her family and she left everything behind. Finally, Whitney found peace in Camden until she meets Kane. This book was very well written and I enjoyed the read. I would recommend this. I give it 4 out of 5 stars!

Kane Archer

"Kane was a badass name, the name
of a hero in an action movie, the name a woman would call out in pure ecstasy
over and over again.  Kane was a man's
name and he was definitely that:  a man -
all man."

Lean,
Broad Shoulders,

Tall,
Muscles,

Confident.

Take
No-Shit kind of man.

The type
you didn't question.

The type
you didn't want to cross, make angry or disobey.

The kind
who would tell you where to go and how to get there.

Do I have your attention now??? Because Kane
certainly had my attention through this whole book.  He was definitely a tortured soul - blaming
himself for the death of his fiancee Aimee.
He's intent on finding the man who killed her, and keeping himself
mentally and emotionally away from any woman he brings to his bed.

Whitney has been serving him coffee for
months.  She's attracted to him, but
knows he's a loner, keeping to himself.
She's heard all the rumors around town about how he's the reason Aimee
is dead - but she knows there's more to the story.

Kane can't deny the attraction to Whitney - it's different from one
of his one night stands.  He's tries to
keep her at a distance, but the attraction is too much for both of them.  But the guilt Kane feels, is to unbearable
for him to handle, and more than once - he walks away.

Whitney knows in her heart he's struggling,
but she's also dealing with her own family troubles, not to mention the
rejection that she is feeling from Kane.
I don't know how she faced him at times, after he left her hanging and
some cruel words he threw at her to keep her away.  I cringed at the confusion that she must have
had at what to feel for him.

Through more twists of fate - they both find
that their past lives and troubles are more intertwined then they could have
ever imagined.  It's unsure whether they
will be able to get past all the guilt and find forgiveness for themselves and each
other.

I
absolutely loved this book - even when Kane needed a good kick in the ass sometimes.  How can you not love a man like him - someone who so
desperately needs some love and is as hot as hell!?
And Whitney, she was no pushover, she was raised to be tough - but she
was also really patient and understanding, and knew a good man when she saw
him.  I couldn't put this book down, and hated for it to end - looking forward to Kessel's story next!

Wow this book was amazing, but I promise you it will make your heart heavy. Very heavy. I personally always have difficulties with stories that build on a character that has lost the love of his/her life and then moves on. I don’t know why, maybe it’s because I secretly believe that everyone has a soul mate out there and in this scenario you’ll never know who the right person was. I had this difficulty here as well because Emma gives us glimpses of the time Kane and Aimee spent together and I really liked Aimee and her death hurt a lot although I never really “met” her so to speak. That’s what made it so hard for me, because I absolutely adored Whitney and wanted her to be the one for Kane, but Aimee was the first love of his life so how is this all going to work out?
Incidentally that was also the brilliant thing about this book because this exact conflict of loving both Aimee and Whitney was a huge part of Kane and I felt the pain right along with him.

Plot
We met Kane shortly in Unbeutifully Loved as a gruff and moody man and the story picks up the exact moment the first book ended – at the coffee shop.
Whitney left her home because she doesn’t want to bow to her family wishes. She moves to Camden and starts in the local coffee shop Grind My Beans. There she meets Kane and the moment she lays eyes on him she is done for. Zing Zoom Swoosh, angles in the sky, Cupid on a high and Whitney falls for the grumpy stranger though she admits that only much later. She can’t help but be intrigued by him, as well as incredible aroused and wanting to get to know him.

“Every time he came around I suddenly forgot myself. In the blink of an eye, I went from Whitney Jareau, confident twenty-six-year-old single woman, to some sixteen-year-old teenage girl who couldn’t keep their cool around a hot guy.“ – inner monologue, Whitney

“And his hips, with those damn indents that made the perfect ‘V’. I swear they made smart girls like me go completely stupid.” – Inner monologue, Whitney

Kane does not have the time or a heart left for love, because he is on a mission to find Aimee’s murderer and will stop at nothing to avenge her death.
But then Whitney gets herself into a dangerous situation, Kane helps her it comes to a world shattering kiss and he can’t continue to keep her at arm’s length. He was drawn to her from the beginning, but he fought it with all the guilt he had. They have their flirty little moments and you can basically hear the sexual tension sizzling in the air.

Before I knew what was happening or could stop, the words slipped from my mouth in a very teasing manner. “No I guess not.” I eyed him up and down as best as I could. “Shame though – you’d look great in a uniform.”
“There’s other things I look better in… and out of,” he said, almost seductively.
- Whitney and Kane

They have to overcome so many obstacles and dark places and when finally it seems like they can work it out the past comes knocking and knocks them both straight on their asses and history is about to repeat itself.

Characters
I absolutely loved and adored Whitney. She is exactly the kind of female lead I like. Strong, independent, smart with a huge, kind heart and a vulnerability she doesn’t like to show and only that special one gets to see. I admired her strength in dealing with all the grumpiness that is Mr Kane Archer.

“I’m Kane Archer,” I said as the door closed behind me. “I’m gorgeous and tattooed with bulging muscles everywhere. I smell amazingly good, even when I work out, and have girls staring into la-la land over my bod. Pfft. Whatever, dude.” – inner monologue, Whitney

Even though he pushes her away and at times I really just wanted to junk punch him she stood by him and didn’t let him suffer in his dark and painful pit of guilt. I love her.

“P.S. Pain doesn’t define who we are as humans, it builds strength and character – even in the darkest of times.” – Whitney in a note to Kane

Kane Archer. I cannot begin to imagine how it is to live with that kind of guilt and burden on your shoulders. The suffocating guilt was pouring of the pages, making it hard for me to breathe. Every time we get to read his POV you could feel it, touch it and it was painful.

“I let the pain speak for me. I let it feel for me, and I let it think for me. I let pain take me to the deepest, darkest part of a person’s emotional state and I let it bury me in the shame I felt.” – inner monologue, Kane

He didn’t really live, he didn’t really feel. He was numb and dark and didn’t care about a single thing other than finding Aimee’s murderer. And even that seemed to drain him off life.
I just wanted him to move on so badly and at the same time not to lose Aimee’s memory in the process, because as I said I really came to like her. I felt his struggle too, but because I also got to read Whitney’s POV I knew if there was one person who could bring him to leave the guilt behind, it would be her. I pushes her away often and tries not to feel for, lying to himself and everyone close to him.

"You don’t know shit, and you never will. What’s my business is my business, and no one else’s, Whitney,” I said coldly. - Kane

It was amazing to witness how he slowly melts for her, brings light back into his world and fights for this light to stay with him.
This couple and their story are beautiful and all that pain is eventually rewarded with a lot of warm fuzzy feels.

My thumbs up
- “Give me the ocean” – I absolutely loved that!
- a well done double POV, I’m an absolute sucker for a double POV
- fantastic secondary cast, which I hope we’ll see more from. I know Kessel gets his story by the end of 2014, which I can’t wait for, but I also hope Zane gets his story and Thaddeus and Basil maybe a novella?
- beautiful character development and wonderful lead characters
- the feeling of the book came off the pages and sucked me in. Brilliant.

My thumbs down
- there were some similarities between Whitney and Aimee I really didn’t appreciate. I wanted them to be very different from one another
- few minor editorial issues and typos, but those usually don’t bother me much, so it wasn’t that big of a deal for me
- again a somewhat foreseeable plot, as I predicted the first plot twist around 25% and the second around 50%, but it’s okay, because this is not a suspense thriller so I’m not too annoyed

Series: Yes, book 2
Story: A man hell-bent on revenge, who lost the love of his life. He finds love and light again in a woman who is not afraid to face his demons, but has her own secrets.
Characters: loveable, real
Plot: well-paced but predictable
Angst: very present and always coming to the fore
Writing Style: solid, intense, with some typos
POV: double POV, both first person

Overall
4 Stars. I very much devoured this read and put off course work to finish the book. The characters are great and the feeling intense. At times I had to read it with a heavy heart, but the story was beautiful in its own painful way. The moment light shines in the dark and you fight for it, makes every pain worth it. I can very much recommend this book, as well as the previous one and author and will continue to read both the series and other books by her.

My rating: 4.5 of 5 ⭐️

At some point in his life, Kane Archer thought things couldn't get much better. After his somewhat turbulent adolescence he had chosen a path for himself that was one of justice, if at times on the gray side of the law, and he had come back to Camden, claiming his future wife. Now, two years after an assignment gone horribly wrong that had left him injured and his fiancee dead, he is in Camden once again - torn and bitter and hell-bent on revenge.

Moving to Camden to get away from family pressure, is the best thing Whitney Jareau could have done for herself. She was being forced in directions she didn't want to go, after the family suffered a devastating loss. Here in this small town, she could live on her own terms and make her own choices. She had good friends and enjoyed working at the coffeeshop. Even better when the dark and brooding, but beautifully handsome Kane Archer popped in for his regular shot of caffeine.

Kane noticed the blue-eyed Whitney, her welcoming smile lifting a bit of his dark mood each time he came in. But he hadn't planned on acting on it, not until he was forced to intervene when it appeared she might be in trouble. Little did he know, the blonde bombshell had some moves on her. She diffused the situation almost single-handedly before he had a chance. That made her even more attractive to him and he had to struggle to keep his focus where it needed to be - finding his fiancee's killers.

Whitney understands the pain and darkness Kane struggles with and would love to alleviate some of it, but has to tread carefully. She has come to care for him a great deal and he is not ready for that. But when her family is once again putting on pressure to make her come home and abide by their wishes, this time by force if need be, he doesn't hesitate to interfere.

****

FABULOUS!!! Another great writer discovered....well....for me at least. And a series! You know what that means...... There will be more!

A little reminiscent at times of the amazing Kristen Ashley, the feeling this book gave me when I was reading. The way the characters were portrayed and the relationship developed. I really, really loved it. Heat, humour, grit, growls, and an array of fabulous and colourful characters against an interesting backstory.

Whitney is resilient, despite suffering significant loss in her life, she has the ability to pull positives out of most situations. If anything, she may have a little too much faith in the goodness of people. An endearing quality but dangerous as well. Her positive nature did allow her to see more than just skin-deep with Kane, the man underneath the armour.

Kane is fueled by revenge, which is why he can pretend not to be affected by the negative assumptions made by the town he grew up in, or why he doesn't make any effort in his own defense. He tells himself it doesn't matter, even though it does. Whitney seems to be the only one who doesn't judge, doesn't assume. She baffles him with her openness and draws him out.

These characters cause the most delicious friction on paper. Poetic contradictions with Kane the rugged and monosyllabic enigma of a warrior and on the other hand Whitney, a guileless and luscious coffee shop employee, with a sweet exterior but a firm bite. Love how the public personalities slowly give way bit by bit under the influence of the other, to reveal the true characters underneath. All of this with a heavy dose of sexual chemistry that is nothing short of delicious.

I adored this book by Emma Grayson, and absolutely do not wish to miss another one in this series. The combination hot chemistry with great suspense is one I am a slave to, as those who know me will attest to. Highly recommended!!

✨An adrenaline-spiked, hot and heavy Alpha ride!!✨

Kane Archer. Tortured Hero. Trapped in darkness. Consumed with guilt and pain. Thirsting for revenge.

Can anyone help him find his way out of the darkness and into the light, or is Kane destined to stay in the past forever?

Unbearable Guilt is the second book in Emma Grayson’s Breathe Again Series. Readers are introduced to Kane Archer in book one when he saves Lexie’s life, but he’s a rather mysterious man. When Book 2 begins, we get a firsthand account of what happened to the love of his life and the burden he carries due to those events. Close to two years after Aimee’s death, Kane returns to Camden to feel closer to her and to plan his revenge on those who took her away from him. Payback is the only thing on his mind, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make sure that judgment days comes to those who took his light away.

Camden residents are not very welcoming to Kane; most hold him responsible for Aimee’s death and want nothing to do with him; even his ex best-friend, Lukas, blames Kane for what happened to Aimee and refuses to hear his side of the story. But one person sees beyond his tough exterior and town gossip…one person tries to save Kane from himself even when he pushes her away and treats her poorly. Whitney Jareau wants to save Kane and maybe even save herself in the process.

Whitney is a kickass heroine. She doesn’t need or want anyone to take care of her. She’s not the ditzy girl who Kane thinks she is…she’s so much more than that. She’s an independent woman who understands how much a loved one’s death can affect someone because she’s lived through that hell herself. Whitney fled to Camden to get herself out of a situation she wants no part in back home, but regardless of how much she’s fighting to live on her own and not give in to the demands that have been placed on her, those pressures are slowly closing in on her.

Emma Grayson does a great job of portraying the guilt and torment that Kane feels. He blames himself for Aimee’s death, and it consumes him 24 hours a day. He is haunted by her memories as well as other incidences that helped to seal both of their fates. Kane’s an asshole most of the time…he speaks without thinking and treats people like shit because he doesn’t know how to handle all of the emotions that torment him. Kane doesn’t know how to move on from what happened close to two years ago; he almost wears it like armor so that he doesn’t have to get close to anyone else or risk losing another person he cares about. What Kane didn’t factor in, though, is how unwilling Whitney is to let him just simply drift back into the darkness once she’s brought him a few steps into the light.

Unbearable Guilt is an intense read; readers are trying to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together as Kane and his crew attempt to take down the man/men responsible for Aimee’s death, and when it all comes together at the end, everyone involved will never be the same. The supporting characters added to the text immensely. The way that Kane’s team has his back no matter what says a lot about the type of man Kane is. I hope to see more of them as the series continues. Readers definitely want to snatch this series up. Each book has a fantastic mix of suspense, angst, romance, and hot alpha males whose willingness to protect those they love make them even hotter.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I had no idea going to get a super badass alpha male with such an emotional story. It's dual POV and Emma Grayson does it exceptionally well!

Kane Archer is still reeling over the loss of his fiancee two years after she was kidnapped and taken from her. Now he's all about finding the man that took her from him. He's repressing his feelings by pushing them aside because he doesn't want to lose Aimee. But then he meets the beautiful barista at the local coffee shop, Whitney Jareau, and suddenly, he's having feelings that he never thought he would have again in his lifetime. And he's not the only one affected. Whitney has finally found someone who she loves, but family will come in the way to destroy what she and Kane have worked so hard for.

"No man has ever inflicted such thought, such antagonizing curiosity, and such twists of my nervous system before. To be honest, I didn't know if I liked it so much." -Whitney

I thought this book was one of the better books I've read in a while. I like the way we get not only the action but the gut wrenching emotions coming from both characters. Whitney is living a life she wants even though her family is forcing her back home. And when she meets Kane, she feels the connection right away. Kane feels it and as hard as he tries to not fall in love with her, his feelings for Whitney are inevitable.

"Kane was like a piece of that perfect chocolate cake [. . .] He was going to be delicious, making me come back for seconds, thirds, and probably fourths, until there was no going back and I was making chocolate cake for the rest of my life." -Whitney

Overall, I'm giving this standalone novel 4 STARS out of 5 STARS for the emotional toll it put on me. The climax is intense but amazing, and the ending is superb! The supporting characters are fabulous! Especially Basil... And when you come across her, you'll understand why I love her and hope she gets her own story! I cannot wait for the next book by Emma Grayson.

4.5 stars
This book has it all! Romance, brooding, longing, deceit, action, plot twists, drama. It is the perfect balance of everything that makes a story hard to let go!
Kane is a man who knows what he wants and needs to do. What he wants is to do his job and find his fiance's killer. He needs to keep everyone at arms-length and find his fiance's killer. The last thing he needs are any complications.
Whitney is living her own life on her own terms. She answers to no one. She can take care of herself. Now her uncle and cousin are pressuring her to come back home to do as they wish. They will stop at nothing to get her back where they feel she belongs.
The tornado that is Kane and Whitney's lives will take you on a whirlwind. No one is to be trusted. Everyone is to be questioned. Secrets are kept. The explosion of the truth is almost too hard to handle.
As the story plays out, I was able to figure out a few things. I can't tell you what they are, but I can tell you something else I figured out. This book is one of those books you would be a fool to not read. It is well written. It will keep your attention all of the way through. You will experience highs and lows you wouldn't expect to experience.
I know there isn't a lot of detail about Kane and Whitney and how they are connected in this story. To be honest, the blurb for this story is enough. Any more than that, and I feel I would be spoiling the fun out of this book. The only important thing you need to know is that this book is on my must-read list for anyone looking for a book to read!!!

“Nothing is more wretched than the mind of a man conscious of guilt.” - Titus Maccius Plautus

This quote opened the book, and once you read even halfway, you will realize it was the perfect quote to encapsulate Kane. This poor man had lost so much, fought through his demons on a daily basis, and had resigned himself to a lonely existence. Whitney became intrigued by this tattooed, good-looking bad boy with the sad eyes, and went about unraveling the mysteries of Kane, like why everyone thought he killed his fiancee. Kane blamed himself for her death, and the guilt was so bad he couldn’t even perform with a woman, plus he was bent on vengeance against the men who helped kill her. There are a few twists in the story, but the author foreshadowed pretty well so you’d understand the plot line better. You did see several characters from the first book, but you didn’t need to read it, too. The author explained everything that happened to those other characters, and you also saw what everyone was up to or doing. I liked watching Kane fall in love again, and even though he tried pushing Whitney away, she was strong enough to forgive him.

Simply stated, Unbearable Guilt was beyond amazing!!!

I loved everything about the story, from cover to cover.

Kane Archer lost everything important in his life two years ago. He is still stuck in that moment. Moment that took his everything. Moment that filled him with pain, guilt.

That changed because of Whitney. He took his first step towards moving forward. It wasn´t easy. He refused and fought against forward. But it was a step. She awoke the feelings in him that were buried deep inside of him and that brought fear in him.

Kane is intriguing and interesting character perfectly crafted.

Whitney, also didn´t have it easy. She knows what tragedy and pain mean.

The book delivers gut-wrenching emotions, dramatic angst, mystery, intrigue that kept me glued to each page.

The interactions, emotions and reactions are deep and strong.

Addictive and captivating story, flawless and engrossing writing style, gripping plot, amazing cast, Unbearable Guilt is a brilliant package.

Man, I love Emma Grayson's writing style! She has an unbelievable way of telling a story with twists that you never see coming. Such was the case with Unbeautifully Loved and now in Unbearable Regret. Kane *sigh* was so tortured and brooding you just want to go up to him and give him a big hug...then maybe a lollipop....or lick HIM like a lolly pop, lol! Whitney was adorable with how she was jittery and nervous around Kane because she was such a smitten kitten, having lusted after him from afar for some time while working at the local coffee shop. I also loved the other side of her personality; badass when she pinned a guy to the wall who was attacking her...this independent quality she had that she could take care of herself and not rely on anyone else.
I could go on and on about how much I enjoyed these two characters and this story. I look forward to reading the next book of the series. 5+++++ stars!!!!!!

I won an ARC copy from the author (thank you) and promised an honest review.

"Show me the Ocean" - swoooon

I simply loved it.

I loved book 2 started where book 3 finished timewise I did love Lukas ( Ok ok i still do) and then I met Archer with green eyes and a seriously pissy attitude and a tortured soul. My heart hurt for Kane but at times i so wanted to punch him in the face when he was being an a**hole. I am so glad Whitney was firey and could handle her own she was perfect for Archer!! What a horrid family she had well except for her brother. The wee twist towards the end was superb and i loved the ending! .The flashbacks were ingenious as it gave you so much insight into Archer and Aimee.

It was great to see Lukas and Lexie and the gang and to wrap up some storylines from book 1. I cant wait for book 3 and hopefully Basil, Thaddeus and maybe Zanes book (hint hint ms Grayson :P).

Another superb book Emma Grayson cant wait for your others !!

This book is absolutely perfect. I loved everything about it. Where is the movie based on this book? Seriously, there should be one because this book is that good. While I really liked and enjoyed Unbeautifully Loved, I just couldn’t put Unbearable Guilt down until I finished it. This is a story to be read and shared with everyone. Kane and Whitney were perfect, and their story will keep you glued to your kindle to find out what is going to happen. Five stars? Not enough! If I could I would give it 10! Just perfect!

This follow-on showed great promise, but I was a little dissapointed, this book was very predictable, and rather stupid. Kane and Whitney have a connection straight away, but neither acts fully upon it until Whitney is in danger. They both have very similar characteristics, for example they are both tough characters, and both suffer from insomnia.

This book is OK, but could have been improved, by not adding such un-plausible plots. However, it is written pretty well.

The author did a great job of making me understand the characters and understanding why the characters made the choices they did. I can't wait to read other books in this series because I loved the characters and I can't wait to see what happens next.
