This seemingly lost ‘true’ crime novel, in that it was based on actual events, concerns the robbery of a Vicarage in 1891 which results in the death of the Vicar. Any mystery is quickly settled when two poachers are found guilty and sentenced to prison for life on somewhat flimsy evidence.

Eight years later, a conscientious solicitor is not satisfied with the verdict, and after an accusation and a confession the case is reopened.

Grierson writes well, if a little wordy in the middle parts, and the story, all happening in Victorian times, is related with a diligent and sharp-witted expertise.
