“It never hurts to be prepared for the worst. Hope for the best. Get ready for the crappy.”

The story can be summarized as the following:

a. Cassidy or simply Cassie (a 19 year old city girl whose dad was a former soldier, a cop and a present detective) finds herself trying to survive the after effects of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack in Los Angeles.

b. Being raised by her father, a realist, who has very wise foresight of an impending disaster to hit the city, Cassie’s goal is to meet her father at a safe cabin at the mountains.

c. On her way, Cassie comes across with Chris, a former Navy Seal hottie and these two figure the safest way to each of their families.

d. The two characters find themselves at odds with nature, thugs, people gone wild and those responsible for the EMP attack.

e. Whether Cassie and Chris will survive or not is out of the question because obviously they are the two people in the city who have the best shot at surviving. With their backgrounds, well go figure.^^

I know the premise is a bit overused but I really enjoyed the execution because of the following:

a. The story is told in the POV of Cassie who is snarky, funny and a definite kick-ass and is apparently immune to pain.

“He grabs me by the hair and jams the heavy side of his gun into my stomach, knocking the air out my lungs. Gee, thanks for that.”

I really love her selflessness, loyalty, love and resolve to reach her father.

b. The chemistry, flirting, dialogues between Cassie and Chris make the entire story entertaining and at times will make you giggle and swoon.^^

"And you’re staring at me,” he states snapping me out of my reverie. “I am not.” I laugh nervously. I’m just…thinking. Without blinking."

c. The events are gasp-worthy and will definitely hold your attention. No dull moments at all.

d. The romance is light. It’s actually really sweet and innocent.

e. A 12 year old, another kick-ass character named Isabel enters the story right in the middle part and will bring additional awesomesauce (as Isabel puts it) in the story.

The reasons I’m not giving this five stars:

a. Obviously because of the worn-out premise.

b. Quite abundant misuse of words or sometimes misspellings and grammar slip-ups. In other words, the writing although is really engaging, could use a little improvement or just probably proofreading.^^

c. Looking closely at the details, a reader may find quite some ludicrous moments especially when at the end of the most dangerous day the characters went through, it’s actually the 12 year old girl who saves the day. Just saying.^^

But honestly, I really enjoyed this to bits and that’s something you don’t often get in apocalyptic/post apocalyptic novels.

Thanks to my awesome author friend Tom Lewis (who wrote an equally enjoyable novel of the same genre for young adults called Aftermath) for recommending this book to me.^^

I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.^^

I can't go on. I just hate the main character too much. It's not me, it's you!

So, in this book we have the promise of civilization as we know it ending because of an EMP. I love end-of-the-world scenarios! Whether it's by zombie, super-virus, war, or EMP, I'm in! And, the more death and destruction the better!

oh spongebob, you blood-thirsty little bastard! I love your killer instinct!

Cassie, our hero, is a 19 year old girl whose father has prepared for the end of the world. She is on the case! She grabs her bug-out bag, runs to the car that they modified to survive EMPS with complete supplies and extra gas, and drives without headlights to sneak out of town to her and her dad's rendezvous cabin. She also is carrying a gun and knows to avoid people who may try and take her car. She sounds like a tough, smart, prepared girl.

She's not.

Okay, why have all of this going on, and a semi-automatic weapon on her when she doesn't know how to shoot? Why hasn't she had any self-defense courses? Why does she struggle with whether or not to pick up a Navy Seal who will help her on the side of the road, but refuses to listen to him and pulls over later at an obvious trap?

Because she is an idiot.

Cassie is the most annoying idiot ever. She actually gets lucky enough to have a Navy Seal with her - who is 10 years older than her - and yet she refuses to listen to his instructions and advice on how to keep them alive. She also pouts, whines, complains, and cries constantly. Seriously, this Navy Seal guy deserves some sort of medal for not just taking her car and leaving this pathetic girl on the side of the road. Because, if most people are going to die, do we really need this idiot to be the beginning of the new human race? I don't think so.

Still, I gave it a try. I thought maybe I could learn to like Cassie, somewhat, if the story was good enough. But, once they go into the city and find soldiers speaking German, herding all of the survivors into prison camps, and then get lucky enough to meet an old man who teaches them all about Nazi Germany in WWII, it was the last straw.

Rounding up. I'm pretty impressed by the young Ms. Lane and her story writing abilities. I don't think I've ever read a story quite like this one, and yes, I have read other books within this genre. For a debut novel, this turned out to be pretty damn good and very engrossing. The book was either on the short side or I just breezed through it fast enough not to notice the length.

The book opens up with 19yr old Cassidy walking home, when a EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) strike hits. In one fell swoop, life as she knows it ends, and a new world order emerges. But Cassidy isn't just a pretty face that will be paralyzed by fear and indecision. Being the daughter of a man who is not only an Ex-soldier, but also a 30yr police veteran, that's now employed by DHS as a Private Investigator, she's a little more street-smart than your average teen. Dear old dad seemed just a bit on the paranoid side with his theories regarding the end of the world catastrophes, teaching his young daughter all the ways to survive in the event civilization collapses due to natural disasters. No, dad actually turned out right, and now Cassidy is on a adventure to meet him at their rendezvous point up in the mountains. Along the way, she meets Chris, an ex-seal who's not only good at survival, he is Mr. Survival himself. What dad didn't get right was guessing how it would all start to end and why.

Overall this book was a very good fast read. It was pretty much a non-stop action/story until the very end. There was also a great deal of sexual tension and romance between the MCs, but it never gets beyond the level of YA. It's still really sweet and sometimes a little steamy. The writing is above average, but won't win any awards. It was however a very easy read, with only a couple of errors. Very good overall, but be forewarned, there is still more story left to tell, which is great because I can't wait to read more.

Content Level: Sexual Content-YA, Violence-NA

Great concept but this didn't work for me as much as I was hoping it would. There's an EMP that wipes out power to the Los Angeles area and maybe all of America. Cassidy and her father, former cop now PI, are prepared for that though. Her father is a bit of a paranoid conspiracy theorist who has go bags ready and a plan for the both of them when the world is destroyed. So when things go for shit Cassidy hightails it home grabs her goodies and leaves the burning world behind in one of the last remaining working cars in the world.

On her way to meet her father she almost runs over Chris, an ex-Navy Seal. They start to travel together and as the reasons behind the EMP are revealed the story begins to fall apart for me. It doesn't take humanity long to turn on each other, maybe 24hours after the EMP and this shifts high gear into dystopian territory.

The issues the pair run into along the road are due to Cassidy's inexperience. I'm not sure why Chris, a seasoned military man, is allowing her to call the shots since all her suggestions lead to disaster.

The big bad here is a bit over the top and his reasons for focusing on the two of them seem a bit thin when the bigger picture is exploding all around them.

The chemistry between Cassidy and Chris is sweet but not quite enough to pull me into the story.

This book was amazing. I couldn't put it down once I started, so I read it all in one sitting.

I loved pretty much everything about this book. The pacing was great, and I never once got bored. There was always something happening to keep things interesting, whether it was meeting strange people, trying to survive, or action scenes. I loved it.

Cassidy is one of the best heroines I've read about in a while. She's smart, brave, and compassionate. Some of her thoughts had me laughing out loud all throughout the story, and I found her extremely relatable.

Chris is just as good a hero, with his soldierly ways. However, he has sweet moments, where you really get to see how much he cares about Cassidy. I loved those. His determination, and never-flagging hope were great qualities that I really admired, as well. I appreciated how the author showed that they were both equal in their relationship, and she had them encouraging each other the whole way. It has to be one of the best relationships that I've read about in an action-packed story in a long time.

Finally, there is the plot. I didn't see much of it coming, if any. I guessed at some things in the beginning, however I didn't care. I was enjoying all the many twists and turns, and Chris's and Cassidy's journey. My interest never wavered, and something was always happening. I loved it.

Therefore, as you can see, this is a very enjoyable book, which I highly recommend. There are instances of humor, a wonderful main relationship, and great action. I have no complaints about this book at all, except for one or two typos I saw along the way. This didn't take away any of my love for the story, though. I was always greatly interested in what will happen next, and after the ending of this, I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel.

*sigh Good and bad news.

Good news. This book is fast-paced, engaging and a good addition to the dystopian genre. Don't let the price make you think that the book is bad at all. It's up there with other dystopian books and will keep you entertained. The dialogues are fun. I'm a sucker for romance and this book didn't dissapoint it was cute that way.

Bad news.
This is not a NA dystopia. Not that something like that is bad, but I've set myself the goal to find New Adult books that are not College romance, erotica disguised as New adult or adult fiction disguised as new adult. In this case this is a YA book that might appeal to NA readers because the romance is cute and charming. But not too much steaminess.

In constrat some scenes are violent enough to guarantee a upper YA label, but honestly other YA books like Branded and End of days have pushed the envelope way more.

I'm in awe with the author, look at her profile, she looks so young and she has already written 10 books! I think she is extremely talented.

Do I recommend this book? Yes. It's a YA dystopia that deserves a chance and it costs only .99. I feel it was a good bargain for all the fun I got. However, if you like me are expecting a NA read that isn't the typical NA story this is not a NA read. Still enjoyable, though.

Kudos to the author for the way she wrote snarky dialogue.

Again if anyone has recommendations of NA dystopian or NA steampunk or NA thriller let me know.

This book is so much fun! I mean, in a "Thank God this isn't really happening" kind of way. But really-- it's fun. YA/NA fiction is so full of frustratingly unlikeable heroines that Cassidy Hart is a breath of fresh air. She's cute, she's smart, she's quirky, and (EGADS!) she doesn't suddenly "just know" how to defend herself when faced with the apocalypse. I will admit, there were times when I wanted to yell "Cassidy, NO! This is a BAD IDEA." One such occasion is the time she decides to let a total stranger in her car.

Okay, so I was wrong.

Enter Chris. He's a former Navy Seal. He's older. And he's hot. What more could you ask for?

STATE OF EMERGENCY is filled with action and suspense. The pacing is FANTASTIC. I found myself looking for stopping points, and three chapters later...you see what I mean. The romance is cute, though cheesy at times, and the ending is heart-wrenching with a dash of hope. I highly recommend this book.

And guys, THERE'S A SEQUEL.

This was a great example of why you should go with your gut instinct when you think that a book blurb and reviews mean you should maybe avoid a book. I decided not to listen to my inner book reviewer and tried reading this one, which I now wish I'd avoided.

Los Angeles has been hit by what looks like a EMP strike, turning off power and leaving the majority of vehicles useless. People are in a complete panic and willing to attack others to get their hands on a working car. I liked the sound of this plot...I enjoy these end of the world as we know it scenarios and the first chapter is quite interesting. We have the power cuts, planes falling from the sky and Cassie running home on foot when the car gives up.

Cassie and her cop father are preppers who have long planned for such emergencies. They have supplies in a car adapted to survive an EMP and keep running and a cabin outside the city to hide out in full of all they need to survive. Cassie decides the house isn't safe with all the planes falling so she doesn't wait for her dad and takes off to the cabin-leaving him no way to get out of the city except on foot. I think perhaps she could have given him a chance to get home and hid inside the car in its secret garage to wait a bit longer than five minutes!

It is when Cassie leaves the city that the problems for me with this book start. She points out that her dad has drilled her for emergencies including don't talk to strangers and don't stop for strangers. She is supposed to be shy, friendless and lacking in social skills. So she stops the car for the first stranger she sees on a dark road who is covered in blood and is an older, fit looking man. Yes of course we will stop the car for the first potential rapist or murdered we find because Cassie says she has a soft spot for helping people. Right. That sure will keep you alive in a disaster like this. Lucky for her that he is an ex Navy Seal.

Cassie is the problem with this book. She is meant to be a nineteen year old who has been prepared for emergencies. Instead she is a nine year old pouty whiny brat who does nothing but argue with Chris to get her own way. Listen dumbass if you stop the car for Navy Seal guy, don't you think he knows better than you where to go and where to avoid? Why he kept giving in to her insane ideas which kept landing them in the shit is beyond me. For example, we'll quietly sneak into this gas station to see if we can use anything...then outside Cassie starts yelling to him inside the building that she got the radio working! Cue attack by two carjacker/rapists. Stupid bitch. She stands there outside the car until they grab her instead of getting in, locking the doors and putting her hand on the horn to alert Chris to danger. Yep she's clever.

Chris would've done better cutting her throat and stealing the car instead of babysitting an idiot. Despite his yells about a trap, Cassie just can't resist getting out the car and running off to check out what was a set ambush. Does this dumb cow know anything? She keeps telling us how prepared her father was and what he taught her but she seems determined to ignore all practical advise and do whatever she wants, putting both of them at risk. Then she gets into a really immature fight with Chris about it where she sounds like a stroppy five year old who isn't getting sweets.

I had enough of this moronic female and by the time she suceeds in giving the car away to rampaging nutters, I didn't care what happened to her and quit reading.

If I were assigning labels I would call this book a YA/NA apocalyptic romance. The main character's personality and the prude romance give the book a young adult vibe, while the plot and characters ages target a more mature audience.

I loved the main storyline start to finish; however, I did have a few hang ups with the delivery. The book has a strong beginning but as the plot unfolds things start to feel forced. The storyline does a bit of weaving that, in my opinion, distracted the author from thoroughly cultivating the main ideas.

Overall, I did think State of Emergency was interesting and plan to read the next book in the series.

*****************************************

Specifics props and grievances...

The MC is a 19 year old introvert named Cassie. As the mother of a 19 year old socially awkward introvert I found Cassie completely genuine. She hides her social insecurity behind sarcasm and humor saying ridiculous things at inappropriate times just like my daughter, this delivers a bit of comic relief. I still think Cassie's personality hinders a true cross over to the new adult genre but it is authentic.

Cassie looks, acts, and even speaks like a teenager; the hero, Chris, is a 28 year old hottie ex-navy seal. These two are not a natural fit and the author doesn't do a great job of nurturing an emotional connection. A younger hero or an older (or at least more mature) leading lady would have gone a long way with me.

There's a few interchangeable run ins with cameo characters that seemed to be thrown in there because something needed to happen. I wish more time had been spent acquainting us with the main bad guy, Keller, and why he felt alienated enough to zero in on two insignificant people in the midst of a large scale hostile takeover. It's more interesting if the villain is an egomaniac with a personal agenda. As it is, the big bad is not adequately developed and the only notable villain is more of a tool than a 3D character.

A handful or so of secondary characters would have added variation, it's so easy to get bored, and subsequently annoyed, with the main characters if there are no wingmen. Aside from Keller, the only other secondary character to speak of is a preteen who is completely out of place in the story. I literally paused to wonder why she was written in, she was distracting and pointless.

First of all I really enjoyed reading State of Emergency by Summer Lane; the two main characters Cassidy Hart and Chris Young meeting by chance following the United States coming to an end, and having to face danger at different intervals throughout it. Overall I felt these two were quite likeable interesting characters, and I was impressed by Summer’s writing style. I can’t wait for the sequel to SOE. I rate this fantastic book five stars.

State of Emergency has an interesting story line and complex enough characters that I made the effort to finish reading. For anyone who watches Doomsday Preppers on the National Geographic channel you'll get this story. I read the book on the Kindle App for iPad.

An Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) has ruined all the devices that use electronic circuits and were not protected in a Faraday Cage. This means cars, airplanes, radios, just about everything we "need" everyday is useless. Cassie, the 19 year old daughter of a former Cop and current prepper was ready for this. She is trying to follow the bug-out plan and rendevouz with her father at their remote cabin in the mountains. Early in the bug-out she runs into (almost literally) Chris a 30 year old former Navy Seal. On the way to the cabin they find out that the EMP may not have been an accident and there is a paramilitary organization trying to take advantage of the situation. They survive the harrowing trip to the cabin and fall in love along the way.

I'm a little creeped out by a 30 year old guy and a 19 year old girl. A number of times through the book there is the impression of the relationship being inappropriate. Then some hints that it may turn into a close older brother scenario and finally a few make out sessions. I think the story would have been equally strong if Chris had been 24 and on leave from active duty.

There also seems to be a great deal of inconsistency in Cassie. At times she's the daughter of a prepper who is ready for some crazy scenarios. At other times she's a sheltered city girl who has no idea what to do. She is described as a shy introvert with almost no friends but she talks freely and quite sassy to everyone she meets. I'm OK with indecisive and low self confidence, but you can't claim to be shy and enjoy frequently helping total strangers

I don't believe that the book was edited. There are several places with time of day consistency issues. Expressions like "... literally backed into a hole (aka as an SUV)" left me confused and simply don't read well. At other times it felt like the story had been left for a while and the writing just picked up roughly where it had been left giving the feeling of non-sequitors. There were lots of formatting issues that made some dialogue hard to follow. In general I felt like I had to work too hard to stay with the story.

If you follow my reviews you probably know how I enjoy Post-apocalyptic/dystopian novels. I read SO many of them making me extremely picky and hard to impress. Well all that to say that State of Emergency by Summer Lane managed to impress me! It was such a great book and I was very surprised to discover this book, it deserves much more recognition! It is one of the best I read so far and is easily making my top 8 in the category.
First the settings of this book reminds me a lot of the show Revolution which I love. It was so similar I checked to see if one could have been inspired by the other but no. I guess that both Summer and NBC got awesome ideas at the same time.
Cassidy is a great character and I truly enjoyed following her through this book. She is fierce, brave and somehow a little naïve even if she refuses to recognize it. She is learning so much thanks to Chris.
Now Chris, man that guy make you fall in love for page 1! Seriously, that guy is major crush alert. He is 6 foot something of hot hunky marine….He is brave, lethal but also soft and loving when he needs to be.
This story is enticing and I loved to follow the evolution of Cassidy as a person as well as her evolution of her relationship with Chris.
The storyline was very well done, it is scarily probable and Summer wrote perfectly how terrible events can bring both the best and the absolute worse out of people. The story unravel on a very steady pace and you never get bored while reading.
In conclusion: State of Emergency is a very strong beginning of a series and it a perfect and original post-apocalyptic story. It is full of action, losses, betrayal with an underlying romance. I will now be eagerly waiting for the Sequel State of Chaos.

Every book lover has a list of books he/she wants in hardback, and this is definitely one of mine.
The book was incredible! The character Chris reminded me of my husband so he's easy for me to get a sense of. The story is so engaging and just when you think the characters might catch a break, another plot twist. I am so happy I read this and I had SUCH a hard time putting it down. I would recommend to anyone and I CANNOT wait for the next book (or even better, books!) in this series to come out. I'm anxious to see more from this author!
I have to note that the book would have received 5 stars from me if it hadn't been for the abundant grammatical mistakes. She needs a new editor, but her syntax and tempo were impeccable! Can't wait to see more!!!!!

could-not-finish
November 16, 2016
I could not finish the book. I got to the point where look there's a guy that's standing in the middle of the road bleeding. Even though her prepper dad says don't pull over for ANY stranger, she pulls over and rummages through her backpack so of course her eyes aren't on him telling him she's going to shoot him which he laughs at because she's an idiot. Her pretending to be a tough girl that knows what she's doing got old quick.

Then they get to a crazy mob, a bunch of dead people, and still she's snarky. How can you be snarky? How can you even question the Navy SEAL about anything he says? This girl seems to have her poop together in the beginning and then you realize it's all smoke and mirrors. NEXT BOOK PLEASE!

Awesomesauce! (lol had to say that)
Seriously, this book was great. Fast paced--it felt like I was reading a novella since I finished it during an evening. I just couldn't put it down. I had to know what would happen next.
And let's not mention Chris *swoon* ;)

Nobody knows how it started, only that, out of nowhere, technology turned on humans. Cellphones died, lights went out, car batteries wouldn't work... and chaos ensued.

Cassidy Hart finds herself in the middle of it all. But thanks to her well-prepared father, she has a working car, supplies and a scape plan. Until the moment she meets Chris Young, a very cute soldier who asks her for a ride... and then the whole plan starts to fall apart. Now they're both on the run from crazy starving civilians and an even crazier militia group called Omega.

But why is Omega group so interested in them? And how come her father was so well-prepared for something like this? Was meeting Chris just a coincidence? What is really going on?

Cassie has no idea. But she will find out.

Wow. State of Emergency was pure undiluted action! I really liked the way the writing instantly sucked me into the story and just wouldn't let me go! It was the first I've read from this author and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it so much. I love survival / post-apocalyptical stories, but they aren't always that well executed, so YAY for State of Emergency! I especially liked that it a New Adult book, meaning that the main character wasn't a teen anymore. We need some more heroines in the 19-25 age range.

However, it was not all flowers and rainbows. This book had many similarities to the TV series Revolution. There was the global shutdown of all electronic devices, the start of journey in search of a family member, the 'help of a handsome soldier', and  a crazy militia group stalking them ... so I really couldn't help but compare them both.

Cassidy did some really stupid stuff, too. She fell for obvious traps, she trusted people who were clearly untrustworthy, and, in my opinion, she was way too nice for someone in her situation. I'm sure that if it was real life she would have shot some people. Maybe even killed someone. I mean, come on, when people are trying their best to kill YOU at any cost, you're not just gonna stand there and do nothing to stop them when you have the chance to, will you? But, well, I suppose it wouldn't look good for the heroine to be bloodthirsty...

Oh, and there were these parts where Cassie went on and on and on about obesity in America. I was like, HELLO? It's the end of the world, people are killing and being killed all the time, there's no electricity anywhere, there's a militia group enslaving people, there's almost no food and water anywhere and all you think about is how all this is a good cure for obesity? Seriously? If she had mentioned it once or twice, it would be no biggie; sure, it does, in fact, make some sense when you think about it. But she elaborated on it over SIX times. I know, I counted. She didn't worry about people clearly losing their humanity around her as much as she worried about obesity. Well, that tells you a lot about her. Oh, and I'm not saying it's a good thing to be obese, but if Cassie had some more meat on her bones maybe she wouldn't have almost frozen to death that many times. >.<

Chris was an amazing character... he was smart, kind-hearted and unbelievably patient. I liked him a lot. Even if all he did was save our silly, self-desctructive little heroine most of the time. When he wasn't acting like total man-candy, that is. Not that I'm complaining about THAT part.

Anyway, I actually learned quite a few survival tips from this book. Turns out I just have to do the opposite of whatever Cassie did. ha-har. Well, jokes aside, State of Emergency made me feel a bit worried about how I'd act if the same happened. I just know I'd be totally screwed. O.o It also makes you think about how people can be perfectly civil and kind one moment and then just slit your throat for an energy bar in the next. If the end of the world happens, of course. Or if they are crazy psychos. But you get my drift. It's an interesting, though frightening, concept.

Funny tidbit: All the time I was reading State of Emergency I was picturing Chris as Chris Hemsworth in the movie Thor. Coincidentally, author Summer Lane admitted in her interview to imagine him like that, as well. The guy IS incredibly hot. *-*

(And, no, this wasn't just an excuse for me to post more pictures of Chris Hemsworth. Ok, maybe it was.)

All in all, State of Emergency does its job very well! It thrills you, it scares you, it keeps you reading like crazy because you just have to see what happens next, and, most important of all, it makes you feel. And that is not an easy feat for a book. I'm REALLY looking forward to reading what happens in the next book! XD

I’m torn between a 3 and 4 on this book. Because it’s GOOD but not phenomenal. I put it down to the fact I was disappointed by the ‘mystery’. Most people wouldn't be and it is an interesting premise. Fans of the Tomorrow When The War Began will love it. The blurb is thankfully vague and doesn’t give any inkling of what this book is actually about.

Basically, an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) hits LA and blows out everything electronic – from airplanes to cars to cellphones. With emergency broadcasting a total bust, California (and presumably the country) descends into mass panic. Think riots, mobs, violence and people becoming animals in their desperate attempt to live.

Cassidy is a special girl though. She is a “doomsday prepper”, with an EMP-proofed car and radio, emergency supplies, well-stocked cabin in the woods and a plan for just this type of scenario. Apart from that though, she is just a regular, perhaps a little antisocial, 19 y.o. Her dad is former military and told that in the event of an emergency, for example thge end of civilisation as we know it, make your way to their mountain cabin and wait for him. Sounds easy enough, but with her path there blocked by car pile-ups, gangsters, people with guns and a bleeding soldier standing in the middle of the road, that's a bit harder than you'd think.

I really loved Cassidy. She is a reluctant survivalist and heroine but she has this well of strength (and sarcasm) that keeps her alive. She doesn’t have crazy combat skills, she doesn’t know how to light a fire or bring an animal to the ground with her bare hands, she hasn’t even seen snow before. She complains about the cold, and gets beaten up, and cries, and blushes at her hot male companion. I LOVED that she was such a realistic character. And the stuff that came out of her mouth – brilliant. She reminds me a lot of Rose Hathway from Vampire Academy. Chris of course is a bit of a Dimitri. Thor-like looks, dazzling smile, ninja skills and imperviousness to cold weather, death and the end of the world.

This book was surprisingly riveting considering it revolved around only two main characters. It was a bit like Eve or Divergent in that way, I guess. And while I wanted to meet more survivors, I was happy enough with these two.

The book is incredibly easy to read. I was hooked by the first two pages because this author does not beat around the bush. She gives you the details you need and no more. No fluffing around. The plot moves quickly, and there is enough action and suspense to keep you turning those pages. There is also a beautiful romance here, one that develops at a reasonable pace and which is fuelled by normal, realistic reactions. A great read for dystopian lovers.

I was asked for an honest review of State of Emergency and provided with an ARC (advanced reader copy).

State of Emergency, written by Summer Lane is a YA/NA (young adult/new adult) Dystopian Adventure Romance. I sat down to read State of Emergency and found myself unable to stop. The characters were well developed, the story constantly kept me on edge and I found myself quickly compelled to read more. Most novels take me about a week to read. I finished State of Emergency within two nights.

State of Emergency, is a great book for both Young Adults and New Adults. One of the main characters (Cassidy) is a young girl just out of high school when an EMP hits and takes out all technology. If you’ve seen the television show Revolution you may be familiar with this theme. Planes fall from the sky, cars no longer work and electricity is zapped into oblivion. Cassidy’s father has always been big at planning and as such has told her where to go in case of an emergency. On her way out of Los Angeles she encounters a handsome soldier, Chris and together they continue their journey to find her father and escape danger.

The story is one not only of love and relationships but also about survival and staying alive. Most Dystopian stories that I’ve read take place after the horrible incident (war, famine, etc) that has destroyed the world. State of Emergency takes you through the actual horror of trying to stay alive. Though it does have romance, the story isn’t heavily romantic whereas it would appeal to both boys and girls. I would best recommend the story for ages 13 and up. There were some editing errors in my ARC. All in all I give State of Emergency 4 out of 5 stars.

State of Emergency is an intriguing premise, but with a strange follow-through.

The biggest difficulty is the editing. Misspellings, missing words, grammar hiccups, and sentence fragments galore. The book also is written in first person, although the job is done capably, and the first person voice is strong. But the mechanical errors are glaring, jarring, and hurt the overall experience while you're reading; it's like slamming into massive potholes right at the good spots.

There are also quite a few random continuity errors that are hard to grapple with. A highly trained Navy Seal with multiple overseas tours under his belt, armed and dangerous, never fires his weapons. The person who initiates the most chaotic scene is a child with no experience or training, yet manages to cause a massive explosion under the noses of the bad guys. The characters consistently seem to walk straight into bad situations, even as they muse over how bad the situation could be.

The lead protagonist, Cassie, switches between sassy-heroine mode and klutzy buffoon, and although she takes great lengths to take care of herself, she very often ends up being a damsel in distress (albeit wearing combat boots). The "Big Bad" in the story is a conspiratorial black-ops military organization, which sounds awesome and scary. If only they were competent, as they are constantly outwitted in progressively more obvious ways - they managed to paralyze the entire country, yet can't catch two people with limited supplies. Despite Omega being unable to catch the protagonists, they seem to be very good at detecting where the characters should be. And it's also surprising that out of the entire take-over, a girl and a Navy Seal are the only two "war criminals" against the new, evil government.

There is also not a lot of info given on Omega. This makes sense in the plot, and this is only the beginning in a series. But it's still a little disappointing. There seems to be no real reason Omega has taken over - they merely have. Furthermore, it seems the entire populace of California - in the matter of a few weeks - resigned to the takeover without resistance, as well as to a life of survivalism without prior experience. Everyone else just magically changed into maniacal, rabid crazy-people in the forests, attacking anyone at complete random with an irrational rage. These random fights, while exciting, feel like the random battles from RPG video games: they happen suddenly, the bad guys are defeated or evaded, and the moment is disregarded.

As said, though, the premise is fantastic. The idea of an EMP attack is exciting as a story, and the scenic landscapes, survival plot, and grittiness gives the entire story a Hunger Games feel. The romance is a little mushy, but fair and convincing. Although Cassidy causes most of the protagonists problems with her naïvety, you get the sense that Chris honestly likes her, and would be willing to do stupid things to keep her safe. I do look forward to seeing the Omega takeover developed more, and to see the modern world deteriorate even further.

The story is very intriguing. But the poor editing and odd continuity errors constantly pull the reader away from the plot, making the book feel interesting yet obtuse. But if you can slog through, State of Emergency is an promising story. If you like the tv shows Resistance or The Colony, or have a hankering for more Hunger Games styled stories, this will be worth a read.

ORIGINAL REVIEW AT: LITTLE BOOK STAR
RATING: 4.5/5 stars

This book is fantastic. You're already hooked on from the first chapter. State of Emergency started with a BAM! What would you do if you were driving, then suddenly all the technology shuts off? What would you do if you saw airplanes falling from the sky? This book was such a page turner. The characters were engaging, the plot was very original, and it wasn't your 'typical' dystopian read. This book is told from Cassidy's point of view, a 19 year old and her goal in this book is to meet her dad in a cabin which is their "meet up" place if something bad (like the end of the world ehem) happens.

I really liked the characters. Cassidy and Chris (a 29 year old former soldier she runs into) were really kick ass. I love how they didn't give up no matter how hard the situation was. Imagine traveling from a city, let's say Los Angeles, to a freaking cabin that's in the mountains with no car! Well, they used a car 40% of the trip, but still. That's A LOT of walking! And they were traveling during WINTER with limited amount of food and water. I also like how the characters weren't whiny despite their situation. They were also very witty which made me love them more!

I seriously recommend this book to everyone and to those who aren't a big fan of dystopians looking for a top notch dystopian read because you'll LOVE it! It is fast paced, has lots of action, plot twist, and a cute NO INSTA-LOVE romance! The only thing that made me like "blegh" a little bit was how Chris calls Cassidy "kid" but he has feelings for her. Umm, can't he call her another pet name? That sort of bothered me. Overall I enjoyed reading State of Emergency and I'm looking forward into reading the next book.

Summer Lane knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat! This book is just one cliff hanger after another, but not in an annoying way. You can't put it down, at least, I couldn't. I mean the MC and her family can NEVER catch a break. Some reviewers got a little annoyed by this, but I enjoyed it and here is why: It's the end of the civilized world as we know it. You can't "relax" during an apocalyptic situation like this. No character in real life or in fiction can afford to let their guard down and they certainly aren't ever going to catch any kind of break. I think Summer did a great job bringing that fact forward.

Her MC, Cassidy is a strong willed and strong minded girl with sharp wit and a mouth full of sassy comebacks. I absolutely loved her. The secondary MC, Chris - the incredibly hot navy seal who saves the sassy Cassidy's butt on several occasions is swoon worthy and written very well. I love his attitude and take on life. He is a survivor and you learn that from the get go.

The only thing that bugged me was how the MC and Seal meet. I won't describe it because I don't want to give away spoilers, but to me in an event like the one that happens to Cassidy lets just say...

I wouldn't have stopped. She's a bit braver than me.

There were a few grammar errors, but nothing that took me out of the story. The formatting is a little wonky and there were some weird spacing issues on my kindle, but that isn't the author's fault. That is on Amazon's converter side. I know from experience that if you're converting something from MS Word onto Amazon for self-pub you're going to have formatting issues. Again, nothing that took me away from the story.

This is a great NA Dystopian and I will definitely be picking up the next installment.

My genre's of choice these days include Thrillers/Mysteries, Fantasy, Distopian YA and, of course, apocalypse/doomsday stories. I read the reviews on this book and they were mediocre, but I liked the premise of the story and figured I would give this book a try. While I think that the premise has a lot of potential, the main character, Cassie, is hard to like. I think this is mostly due to the amateur writing style and extremely immature dialogue that is littered throughout the book. Cassie begins to get annoying with her helpless antics and childish thoughts and responses. Chris continuously calling Cassie "kid" is also extremely annoying and slightly inapprorpriate considering he has romantic feelings towards her. The descriptions of the character's facial expressions and gestures are also off and just don't seem quite right in many of the situations. Considering what these characters have been through in their past as well as the events of the story, I would just assume that they would act more capable and more mature...ie. grow throughout the story. I have to say, that after reading stories with strong, female main characters, I am having trouble stomaching Cassie's character...

I was able to put these feelings aside and enjoy most of the book, enough so that I bought the next installment, but I'm not sure if I will be able to continue to read these stories if the quality of the writing does not improve and the characters remain flat and boring.

State of Emergency is a novel about the end of the world as we know it, via an EMP. EMP stands for Electro Magnetic Pulse, which is a bomb that wipes out all of our technology, dooming America. As this all happens, Omega, an evil Nazi like organization starts to take over the country. Omega begins to place “safe camps” across America, which are really slaughtering houses. However, one nineteen year old girl has a plan, and a will to live. Her name is Cassidy Hart, and she will survive this apocalypse, even if it means shooting someone… Right between the eyes.

State of Emergency is a fantastic novel full of action, adventure, and romance. Whereas most novels for New Adult drag on with slow emotional scenes, this book keeps it fast paced and moving the whole time. As the story drives on, Cassidy meets a Navy Seal on leave, named Chris. Teamed up with him, she fights her way through California towards the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where she is to meet her father.
However, things never go as planned, and they have to fight through viscous mobs, survive evil gang attacks, and sneak through Omega’s internment camps. This book kept me on the edge of my seat for hours, and never had a moment where I felt in any way bored of reading it.

I loved this book! This is a TEOTWAWKI story that's also a YA sweet romance. It's funny, because all of these terrible things are going on, and I'm over here swooning over Chris. I loved Cassie right from the get go. She's got a great personality, and she adapts really well to the changing world. I loved so many of her lines. Lets get back to Chris though ;). Is there a more perfect man?? I doubt it. He's essentially described as a green-eyed Chris Hemsworth, and Cassie even compares him to Thor at one point. And, he's a Navy SEAL. Yes please! I would be following him all over Cali too, thank you very much! I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book. Please, please release book 2 soon!

Wow! I was really surprised at how GOOD this book is. I found it on Amazon (for Kindle) for $2.99 and snatched it up for cheap, and I'm glad I did.

I think the writing could use a lot of tightening up, but it's all very minor fixes. The plot is great and riveting and the characters are very realistic. (Well, except for maybe Paige's tendency to want to help eeeeeveryone. I'm coldhearted and in this kind of situation? I am not as nice as her, let's just put it that way.)

I'll definitely be getting the next book in the series. Summer Lane did an exceptional job on this book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys End of the World type stories (fans of Life As We Knew It, for example.)

Great book, great characters love the dynamic between them and the underlying storyline!!!

For poor books remember what Yoda said - "If no mistake have you made, yet losing you are ... a different game you should play!"

How I review...
1 star - binned it before half way, please don't write anymore!!!
2 stars - finally binned it after really trying, I mean really trying and I hate to not finishing someth....
3 stars - finished it but boy was that hard work on times, it just about hooked me back in as I was about to dump it
4 stars - great book but it lacked something, something, can't put my finger on it but.... something
5 stars - want more, more books, more movies about the books, more movies about the authors and the making of the movie, just more!!!

I want to say this book will change your life but I will not because that should be left to you. I have enjoyed this story immensely. The story is well developed and very intriguing. I loved the characters though. I love how Cassie is so selfless and strong. She makes me believe it is easy to survive however it really isn't.

This story is filled with unpredictability which is difficult because we see the whole picture just not what the character is going through. However the author did an amazing job with putting things within to shock us or to say whaaaattt.

Overall this will be my favorite for this year.

Really enjoyable post apocalyptic story about a girl called Cassie who lives in L.A. and is suddenly left to fight for survival when an EMP wipes out all the power and society breaks down within hours. Her father was a 'prepper' so she is better prepared than most, but she finds extra help in the form of Chris, a navy seal. They develope an interesting relationship and the struggle for survival keeps the story flowing nicely. Can't wait for the next instalment as this book ends on a cliff hanger.
