Apart from the fact that the color of her eyes turn red when the moon rises, Myung-Ee is your average, albeit boy crazy fifth grader. After picking a fight with her classmate Yu-Da Lee, she discovers a startling secret: the two of them are "earth rabbits" being hunted by the "fox tribe" of the moon! Five years pass and Myung-Ee transfers to a new school in search of pretty boys. There, she unexpectedly reunites with Yu-Da. The problem is, he mysteriously doesn't remember a thing about her or their shared past at all!
DON'T GET ME WRONG. I didn't hate it. (Even though...you know, my rating for this book is a 1 star...) It's not that I didn't like it. It's that I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE HECK WAS GOING ON ABOUT 99% OF THE TIME. The only bookshelf this book is on besides "read" is MANHWA. And that's because it's OBVIOUSLY a manhwa.
First of all, this is the first manhwa I've ever read. I thought it was pretty cool because all the sound effects are written in Korean instead of Japanese, it just looked so different! And about 99.9999% of the comics I read are manga, so all I usually see are Japanese names and Japanese characters and things referring to JAPAN.
Not to mention the cover. You HAVE to admit...it looks pretty. And I'm this magnet that sort of gets sucked towards the prettiness of pretty covers. PLUS, I got this book from the library and I was totally willing to check this series out! It's FREE! (Freeloader...)
BUT when I opened the book, I seriously had no idea what was going on! Even the blurb in the back looks......uhhh...
Myung-Ee is your average, albeit boy-crazy 5th grader. The problem is he mysteriously doesn't remember a thing about her or their shared past at all!
....................Okay. THAT BLURB JUST EXPLAINED THE WHOLE ENTIRE BOOK.
AND that's a pretty weird plot! A boy-crazy 5th grader?? I do admit that 5th graders can be boy-crazy, but the weird thing is...at the very beginning of this story, she was swooning over a 10th grader and that's a little... I mean I know a bunch of girls that ARE IN LOVE WITH MUSCLY BOYS. (*Sigh...) High school girls... And I'm the same age as them, but I'm not attracted to guys with abs. It makes them look like their insides exploded... But this girl...who is an ELEMENTARY SCHOOLER...likes a 10th grader--okay, I'm not judging her! Maybe some 5th graders are boy-crazy, I dunno!
THEN it says, "Five years pass and Myung-Ee transfers to a new school in search of pretty boys."
Girlfriend, really?
I should have read the blurb in the back before checking out this freaking book. (Note to self: NEVER EVER EVER fall for pretty covers without looking at the back of the cover too....)
It's like that one cheesy joke.
Guy walks up to girl: "Are you an angel that fell from heaven?" (*Girl turns around) Guy: "Because it looks like you fell on your face."
THIS might be the book! Just before I started this review, I glanced at the pretty cover wondering why such a pretty cover...would contain such a straaaaange story. And then I turned the book over and WHOA. WHAT IS THIS?!
So you can clearly tell that she's obsessed with pretty boys...
And THEN it says that she suddenly runs into Yu-Da again...but he doesn't remember who she is OR their past together...
Dude, there was no past. Here is basically what happened:
(*Myung-Ee bumps into Yu-Da*) Yu-Da: "Watch it. mop top!" Myung-Ee: (*Gasps dramatically) "MOP TOP?!" Theresa: HOW is she a mop top? Myung-Ee: "What a jerk!"
That's all I remember. That's not a memory, that's more like an unfortunate encounter.
THEN when she sees him again in high school, he says he doesn't remember her, and she's like, "YOU DON'T REMEMBER HOW BIG OF A JERK YOU WERE TO ME?!?!?!!?!?!"
What on earth is the big deal? (Is she one of those girls that freaks out over nothing, gaaaaaah...)
.................so yeah. Even the PLOT of this book is strange, with the moon rabbits and the moon foxes and foxes eating rabbits and her getting randomly engaged to somebody--yeah.
I wasn't into it at first...and trust me, a fifth grader harping over a tenth grader is quite off-putting...but...the story picked up and besides a few odd moments...a lot of odd moments...the story was actually something I was looking forward to. I can't wait to read the next book--maybe we'll learn more about the rabbit people! How are they going to survive the foxes? Meeeh--I'm excited X)
I don't think I ever heard of this title prior to my bestie Nicole mentioning it, and even if I'd somehow seen it around in bookstores when I was younger, I don't know if I would have been that interested or drawn to give it a try. Honestly, I can say that I'm glad I picked this volume up! Of the three backlisted manwha titles from Ice Kunion that I've recently read, I think this one has to be my favorite so far.
Moon Boy has a lot of mythological background and set dressing to its story, and this has entrenched the plot in a way that to me, feels somewhat reminiscent of the very first arc of Sailor Moon with the Dark Kingdom and Queen Beryl. While our main characters all feel very much like they've not settled into roles yet, they do have very unique and colorful personalities that help them to stand out from the background faces.
I'm unsure yet what I think about character relationships, but the dynamics that are starting to build are intriguing and juicy, and the art style is absolutely fun! I look forward to trying to hunt down the rest of the series in the future and see what's in store!
criminally underrated, how could anyone pass up a series that opens with "once upon a time, rabbits lived on the moon?" this is for real one of the best manhua out there, with beautiful and pop art and a cast of characters that draw you in. some of the wonky "boy love crazy" elements are way overplayed and a little cringeworthy, but it dies down after the first volume and doesn't take away from the super fun story lee young you crafts.

The summary spoke of the rabbits fleeing from the moon because of foxes, but manga here speaks of wolves. What works and doesn't work here makes no sense, what people do usually makes no sense, the way it portrays YAOI shippers is downright insulting and I have my suspicions that the story is slightly homophobic, at least. I will definitely not continue with this. The characters are idiots and assholes, the story is uninteresting and the premiss might have worked but the way it is, it is way too idiotic and not treated serious enough to work.
I just re-read this, and I can say it was a lot better than I remember it being.
The first time I had read it, I remembered that I didn't quite understand it. I also saw a lot of people saying they didn't understand it in the reviews... But, now that I've read it again, I actually understood it fully-- And I loved it! Now I'm on to the next volume. (I get them from my local library.)
