Another Saturday Night and I Ain't Got No Body

Rate this book
Sunny’s not sure she’s even looking for Mr. Maybe, when her friends decide to find her Mr. Right. Sunny Vale considers herself a dog-loving, romance-reading homebody. But her life goes from dull to deadly when her book club fires her from her own love life and sets her up on six blind dates--one of whom might be with a murderer.

More trouble arrives in the dead of night, in the form of Jake Landon, a mysterious stranger, who breaks into her neighbor’s house and possibly her heart. But Jake is packing more than a loaded gun in his well-fitting Levi’s. He brings an arsenal of secrets and plenty of heat to Sunny’s ho-hum summer.

Jake Landon finds himself caught up in the capers of the sexy blonde in the house next door. But he has his own agenda which doesn’t involve playing hero to a curvy second-grade teacher and babysitting her panty-puking puppy. He's got other problems like fiery explosions, a missing person...and a parade of jerks Sunny insists on dating. Could Sunny’s Mr. Right be right under her nose? Even though Jake is gorgeous, likes her dog, and has abs she can crack an egg on, can she really go out with him if he’s just murdered her next door neighbor?

Women of all ages will enjoy this tale of humorous, women's fiction that also has a touch of cozy mystery in this small town love story.

Another Saturday Night and I Ain’t Got No Body is book one in the Page Turners series by Jennie Marts. If you know me, then it will come as no surprise that I have already read the two novellas that are later in this series and also the last book which is full length. I have been telling myself to go back and start from the beginning because I loved the others so much. I finally did and oh my goodness! I want to shout from the roof top how wonderful this book was. It was fun and quirky and swoony and sweet and also pretty darn suspenseful! I loved the relationships between the members of the Page Turners book club. I should have done this so long ago!

Sunny Vale is a second grade teacher in Pleasant Valley, Colorado. She lives alone in her house with her Golden Retriever, Beau. Her neighbor is an older man, Walter and then on his other side, a woman in her eighties, Edna who is a hoot and is also in her book club! Edna is wilder than any of the younger women!

No one has seen Walter lately. He’s usually out working in his yard or in his workshop. It’s Edna who noticed a strange man arriving at Walter’s house in the middle of the night and going inside with a duffle bag. He claims to be related to Walter but is very secretive. And still, no Walter.

Sunny likes her life with her dog and her romance books. But her book club decides that it’s time for Sunny to date. They vow to set her up with six blind dates, one each Saturday. At the same time, every interaction she has had with the man staying in Walter’s house, whom she has learned is Jake Landon, draws her more and more to him. He has abs for days and wears Levis like no other. But, he could also be the one who did something to Walter!

Throughout the book, the mystery deepens, and there is more than one thing going on here! Parts were so suspenseful I was on the edge of my seat! But also, I loved getting to know the members of the book club. There are other relationships forming throughout, one in particular it seems will be the focus on the next book! I fell in love with Sunny’s dog, Beau. And then there is Jake! He is tough, but so sweet and protective. So swoony! This is kind of like a cozy mystery with some wonderful romance thrown in and a little steam! I loved every single page of it and can’t wait to read the next book, Easy Like Sunday Mourning.

This is a sweet book! Well written and funny. I loved Sunny and Jake together. The side characters are great too! There is some romance, but not much steam! The mystery was done well!

Have you ever picked up a book because of someone else's recommendation, even though that genre wasn't really your thing? Because that was me. I'm not really into chick lit or mysteries anymore. I've liked plenty in the past, but they haven't worked for me in the last few years. Yet I trusted an author whose books I love, and picked up a sample on Amazon. I was happily surprised that when I got to the end of the sample, I had to have more! So I went and bought this book. It was just that adorable. Another Saturday Night made me laugh and the characters quickly became my friends. And I'm happy to say that when I finished that last page, I was left smiling and grabbed the next book in The Page Turners Series!
Her life was safe and quiet. Had it only been a couple of days since she had wished for more excitement? She feared she was about to get her wish.

Stepping into the first scene of this book, I knew I was going to love it. Sunny was talking to her eighty year old neighbor, Edna, on the phone. You see, one of Sunny and Edna's neighbor, Walter, was MIA. But Edna swears she saw a hot, gun toting stranger going into Walter's house last night. What transpired from there was oh so funny. Especially how Sunny ended up meeting said hot, gun toting stranger. His name was Jake Landon and he definitely had a ton of secrets. Yet Sunny couldn't deny that there was an attraction between them, right from the start.
Finding Mr. Right? I didn’t even know if I was looking for Mr. Maybe.

Not only were Sunny and Edna neighbors and friends, but they both belonged to a weekly book club. Rounding out the club was Maggie, a mom of two boys, whose husband left her a year and a half ago. Cassie, who was happily married with two kiddos. And Piper, who was Cassie's high school niece who had come to live with her. I quickly warmed up to each of these women and found myself invested in their lives too. They not only discussed the books they were reading, but also their lives. And in their latest book meeting, they all decided to help Sunny out with her lack of love life. They were going to set her up on a date a week, for the next six weeks.
The last few weeks, she had been throwing caution to the wind and dating strange men, hoping to add excitement and find that right guy. But what if the right guy was next door and had just invited her to dinner?

Sunny's dates were hilarious! I was laughing so hard, but at the same time I was dying for her awkward situations. And I found humor in so many other places in this book too. Even with Sunny's dog, Beau. Oh my gosh, I adored Beau!! He was hilarious, loyal and added so much joy to this story. I also loved how Beau interacted with Jake, sigh. I truly think that Beau is my favorite dog in a story. Ever. So while Sunny found herself going out on these blind dates, and coming back to just her dog, Jake was still there. Just next door. They couldn't help but run into each other. And slowly a friendship started to form, yet there was also that attraction between the two of them. But there were still so many questions surrounding Jake. Who was Jake? And where was Walter? Did Jake kill him? And as if that wasn't enough, another mystery appeared on the pages.
“Hey, Sunny,” he called from the doorway.
She stopped and looked back. His lean body was silhouetted against the light coming from the house, and it took all she had to not run back and throw herself into his arms. “Yeah?”
“You
can trust me,” he said softly, looking into her eyes. Then he stepped back into the house and closed the door behind him.
Maybe, but right now, she didn’t think she could trust herself.

I'm proud to say that I guessed the majority of the mysteries correctly, yay! And I'm also proud to say I liked how this story was told. Usually I prefer to stick with one or two characters, so I found myself shocked that I liked floating around between everyone. Yeah Sunny was the main character, and we spent the majority of the time with her. But we also got to see life through Jake, Maggie, Piper and a few of the other characters too. I was more than invested in all of their lives. This book was super adorable, light even though it touched on some heavier topics (trigger warning for attempted rape), had a sweet romance, intriguing mysteries and was such a quick read. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book and catching up with this crazy gang again!

I knew I wanted to read this book as soon as I read the description. Not only did it have the cozy mystery feel (one of my favorite genres), the main character is a dog-loving book fanatic who is a member of a book club! Sounds like someone I know... oh wait... ME! I related to Sunny right away in that we both lead quiet lives and are sort of home bodies. She reads a lot of books and fantasizes about living those book lives, all with her best pal, Beau, a precocious dog, by her side.

So the story is that Sunny is an elementary school teacher whose best friends are the members of her book club. After being single for far too long, they decide to set her up on six blind dates, even though she's a bit reluctant. She's also falling for her handsome new neighbor, Jake Landon. She's a bit wary about him though, for a number of reasons: one, he moved into Walter's house, an elderly man who happens to be missing, and whom Jake claims to be related to, and two, her nosey but lovable neighbor, Edna, saw him with a gun. What's a girl to do? Well, this girl goes on the blind dates which are all quite hilarious, all the while pining for Jake, who she's a bit afraid to get close to. She also does some investigating with her best friends about Walter's mysterious disappearance and Jake's fishy behavior regarding the disappearance.

This book was so incredibly fun. The characters were awesome, especially Edna, Sunny's elderly friend/neighbor who provides a ton of comic relief, as well as exceedingly long nicknames for Jake that had me cracking up. She was NOT a fan of Jake at all and fancied herself an amateur detective after watching countless crime shows on TV. I also loved all of Sunny's other friends and their little side stories. I have to admit, the dog was one of my favorite characters too... LOVED Beau!

The blind dates were comical and entertaining, the mystery was intriguing, the friendships were fun, the characters were fantastic, and I laughed the whole way through this book. If you're a cozy mystery fan who also likes a little romance and a lot of humor, this is definitely the book for you. I am really hoping the author writes a sequel or two! :)

I highly recommend this fun story! It's a cross between a romantic comedy and a cozy mystery. It's laugh-out-loud funny and heart warming, all rolled into one. Sunny's dates, her fellow book club members, and her new hot, sexy neighbor, all make for a great read! I can't wait to see what's in store for the other members of the Pleasant Valley Page Turners Book Club in the next book in this series!

A great LMAO read!

Jennie Marts has created a laugh out loud, rip roaring romantic comedy novel that I just could not put down! Read along as you meet
Sunny, a twenty something 2nd grade school teacher whose idea of excitement consists of eating ice cream & reading steamy pirate
romance novels.

Enter the Page Turner's Reading club, who decide it is time for Sunny to get out and start meeting people. They decide to set her up on
6 blind dates during summer break, hoping she will meet Mr. Right. Add one missing next-door neighbor & a mysterious, sexy stranger
taking up residence in the neighbor's house and sparks will fly! LITERALLY.

Read along as the Page Turners investigate what happened to their missing (and presumed dead) neighbor & the sexy man next door,
while poor Sunny is subjected to one crazy blind date after another!

I have to say that this was one of the most fun reads that I have had the pleasure of coming across in a very long time.

Kudos, Ms. Marts,
for creating fun, sassy characters & a world that is so believable that it could be my neighborhood!

Cute cozy mystery/chick lit romance with lots of fun characters. Unfortunately the main character, Sunny, was so DULL. She doesn't like to do anything. She doesn't like adventure (yes, someone who hates surprises and adventures we are supposed to believe wants to solve a mystery). There were lots of humorous parts, which were great, and I thought the mystery was handled fairly well, even as it was in the background to Sunny's dating life. I enjoyed her friends (particularly Edna and Piper) and her love interest, Jake, but Sunny was so devoid of personality I could never truly get into the book.

When elementary school teacher Sunny's neighbor disappears and a strange man takes up residence in the empty house next door, she and her book club friends have plenty to gossip about. He's mysterious and sexy, and Edna swears she saw him carrying a gun, but no one can figure out why he's really there — or what happened to Walter. Despite her friends' best efforts to resurrect her love life with blind dates, Sunny can't keep her eyes off the man next door, but giving into her attraction might lead to happily ever after, or it might just pair her up with a killer.

Another Saturday Night and I Ain't Got No Body just might be the most fun I've had reading in years.

Sunny's been in a dating rut for far too long, but while she'd love to find that special someone, she's not too worried about it. Her book club friends, on the other hand, have their own opinions on the matter. Sunny reluctantly agrees to let them set her up on a series of blind dates, and in no time, Sunny's dull summer turns slapstick crazy.

We're first introduced to the best secondary character in fiction history. Edna is one of Sunny's neighbors, a meddlesome, elderly woman who isn't exactly known for her tact. She watches the comings and goings on their street like an amateur detective, coming up with all kinds of screwball theories, but she's got a heart of gold. It's Edna who first notices the mysterious man who moves into their missing neighbor's house in the middle of the night. Sunny notices him, too, but while she's aware of Edna's suspicions, it's not Jake's gun that catches her eye first.

Jake seems like a nice enough guy, and he's more than a little easy on the eyes, but there's too much Sunny doesn't know about him. So while Sunny enjoys the view, she and the Pleasant Valley Page Turners book club do a little snooping and try to figure him out — and fix Sunny's dating life while they're at it. Their fix, however, is practically a comedy of errors, and I was so busy laughing at the scrapes Sunny found herself in that I didn't have time to wish she and Jake would just get to it already.

Another Saturday Night and I Ain't Got No Body plays out like an awesome movie centered around a group of women friends who have no real boundaries. Through it all, Edna provides constant shock and hilarity, there are some rather tender “true friendship” moments wrapped up in lots of lively fun, and the mystery surrounding Jake just gets deeper. Throw in some romance, more sleuthing, a possible stalker, and poor Sunny's dates falling apart, and you've got yourself an incredibly entertaining read.

** I received a copy of this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review. **

I really enjoyed reading this book! It was a brilliant piece of chick-lit!

Quirky, mysterious, bat-s**t crazy and funny, I spent a large portion of thie book laughing out loud!

The book was fast moving, something was always going on to keep you hooked, whether it be the element of mystery, the fantastic humour, or the romance.

The character development was fab, and I really found myself invested in all of the crazy character's live's.

By about 40% of the book, we read from the POV of at least 3 different characters, with more to come later on. At first, this did become slightly confusing, and not too easy to keep up with!

However, you soon get into the flow of it, and as it is quite a long book (325 pages), it does help to break up the story and keep things fresh and exciting!

It was a super funny, exciting read, and a real breath of fresh air!

When I approached the author in a group where authors ask for people to review their books, I saw this one. What drew me what the cover of this book, its very eye catching. My second thought was, that it looks a bit like a chic lit book/choc lit and I don't often read them.

So, I read inside the preview and thought I'd give it a read. I can honestly say that I LOVED this book. It had me laughing out loud in some places. Oh Don't be mistaken, its not a usual love story, there is mystery, possible and potential murder, even some women calling themselves Miss Marpels! it was very good and very serious in parts too. Of course there is one major person [Sunny] who takes the female limelight, and Jake is the man that keeps you wondering, did he or didn't he. Is he or isn't he. I would urge you to read this, its a first in this kind of genre for me, and if others are like this, then I'm hooked.

Another Saturday Night and I Ain't Got Nobody is a hilarious, laugh-out-loud, mysteries good time!

Sunny's friend decide that Sunny needs to find her match, even if she is not sure of this herself. They each take turn picking a guy for Sunny every Saturday night. The date's range from funny, weird, sad, and boring.

During all the crazy dating, Sunny gets close to the new guy Jake. But the problem with Jake, he may have possibly killed Sunny's next door neighbor, Walter. Yeah, I would say that would put a damper on all the romantic bubbles.

This story is great! Reading through the plots to discover who killed Walter, Sunny's crazy friends banter, the blind dates, and her attraction to Jake, you can't help but want to keep turning the page.

I would say this is a must read for anyone who loves a great mystery, loves to laugh, and enjoys a great book!

Such an enjoyable read. I was really looking for something light and funny, and this gave me it perfectly. It was interesting, funny and it felt real. I fell into this world and was sad to leave it. Loved Sunny, she was a breath of fresh air. I loved all of the dates she went on, and looked forward to them as much as her interactions with Jake. What a great read! If you want something missing that heavy drama that I find to be exhausting sometimes, then I definitely recommend you give this a try.

Overall, it was a well-written and good story, great main characters, actually very clean language but I'm not a fan of romance or romantic details, so I skimmed over all that. To me, there wasn't enough mystery, but not being one to bug out on a book that had just enough mystery to keep me reading, I only really read the parts that interested me which were the sleuthing and finding out what was going on with the missing neighbor. To be quite honest, I mainly read it for a book club and because it was one of the oldest books in my Kindle account, and I like the idea of working on my TBR. I will pay better attention to shelf tags from now on, because if Romance is listed first, I'm probably going to pass it up, lol. (In other words, not liking parts of something was just me, and if I wanted, I could have bailed--the description is spot-on, a little mystery in a romance.)

The things I absolutely loved were Beau the Golden Retriever, he was such a silly lovable dog. And Edna was an absolute hoot and so hilarious! The book club meetings were okay, and Sunny had some really nice friends but again, to someone like me who's used to reading cozy murder mysteries, this just wasn't my cuppa.

Ok. It's true. I was 1st interested in this book by the Sam Cooke song title. The book was as good as the title. To me, it was both cozy mystery and romance. The women characters were great! They were best friends, book lovers, and supportive of each other sometimes in a hilarious manner. There is also a loving dog named Beau...oh and some cute guys who were also great guys.

This book was all over the place! All the characters, the main characters are beautiful people, talented, smart and wonderful. The senior character in the book is obnoxious and trashy. There is no reason for the plot of trying to find "Sunny" a date, she gets hit on all the time, and is pretty much in love with the new neighbor and he with her. But we have to go on all these ridiculous drawn-out dates, and a long weird story about a missing neighbor. It's all so convoluted and strange, I can't even try to make sense out of it. There's a young teen-age girl who is having mother issues also.
I was hoping the book would get better, but it really didn't. I was in hospital so I was stuck with it.
I wish I could give it a better review, but it was just so mixed-up and senseless!

I just finished this book. It reminded me of more of a romantic comedy with a few zany ladies thrown in. There were parts that were serious, but basically a light and fluffy read. The dating trip for Sunny was comical. I enjoyed her neighbors and her book club friends. The Pleasant Valley Page Turners Book Club can easily be a series and I think it should! The cutest thing was her friends were not cookie cutter friends. her neighbor was a lot older and sort of off her rocker, but Sunny really cared for Edna. The mystery that was in the forefront was a missing neighbor.

The book was fun to read and I think my romantic comedy fans would enjoy it. For a debut I think the author has shown that she is worthy and the book can be a series or stand alone.

This was such a great book. The first I have read from Jennie Marts. It was so funny. It centers on Sunny and her neighbors in a cul de sac and also her friends from her once a week book club. Her friends all decide Sunny needs to get a dating life so they talk her into six weekend blind dates. These turn out to be hilarious. Sunny is interested in her neighbors grandson, Jake. As Jake searches for his grandfather and Sunny goes on her dates alot happens in between. This is a great read and worth the time to read

I just loved this book. Laughed out loud and even shed a tear. Edna was a hoot and the hilarious dates of Sunny had me smiling from ear to ear. Jake was sexy and all of the characters came to life in this book. The book probably could have ended two chapters earlier, but still so worth the read. A great romance with some mystery intertwined and lots of laughs

I read the first book in this author's Bee Keeping series last year and liked it enough to look for other books she's written, so when I found this available through Kindle Unlimited, I jumped at the chance to read it.

Unfortunately, this book was a big disappointment. It's tagged as humor, cozy mystery and romance, but in my opinion, the only one of those that fits is romance. Maybe because I'm a bit of a klutz myself, I didn't find much humor in all the things that happened to/around Sunny, the MC. While there was a bit of mystery in the book, it was so insignificant to the story that I often forgot about it. There was *much more to the romance, in much more detail than what is usually found in a cozy mystery.

I don't usually write a series off after just one book, but this will be one of the exceptions. There are too many other books out there to waste time on another book in a series that started in such a disappointing manner.

Sunny’s friends and neighbors are trying to fix her up with blind dates. None of the dates work out for her, but one seems to not want to let her go. Jake moves into her neighbor’s house and the neighborhood is worried that something happened to the neighbor and does not trust Jake. Love her friends and neighbors, they are funny and also care about their friend Sunny. I like the slow friends to lovers building of the relationship between Sunny and Jake and protection by Jake when she is being stalked. This was an entertaining read with some drama, intrigue, humor and great friendships.

3.5 stars for me. The story was nice and the characters were nice too. I liked the concept of the girl gang. I enjoyed the hero to the resue parts. However, there was no mystery really, it wasn't long before I already knew who Jake was, who the stalker was, etc, etc. Sometimes I felt that things were unnecessarily dragged on and a lot should have been cut out of the story. It took me forever to read this novel and it didn't seem to make me yearn to continue reading the book whenever I put it down.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as I wanted to. It had a Stephanie Plum vibe but felt a little too silly. I will try book 2 though, because it might just be my current mood didn't mesh with the style.

Oh man, I really enjoyed this book. Right off the bat I enjoyed the MC, Sunny, and I absolutely loved her older neighbor Edna. She literally had me cracking up, thus giving it away to my coworkers that I was reading instead of working. Oh well, this story was worth it. Sunny's other friends added more dimension to Sunny and made me wish I had friends like that, or at the very least a book club like that.

Sunny was such a goof that I couldn't help falling for her, and her blind dates were so disastrously hilarious. She had more nerve than I would to say yes to a blind date, much less six. How terribly awkward. Jennie Marts may have gone a little stereotypical on each blind date, but it was fun, so who cares.

Mr. Show-up-in-the-night-with-a-gun-and-all-suspicious-like, aka Jake, her neighbors grandson was intriguing from the get go too. Despite all the suspicion about him, I was like Sunny and didn't believe all the hype and trusted him. He was such a dream, impossible in real life, but a dream nonetheless.

This was a fun Rom-Com that is worth anyone's time if they enjoy that genre. There was a hint of naughtiness but it didn't drive the book and when it was present it wasn't grotesquely described. It was beautiful and refreshing. I wouldn't be opposed to checking out some of Jennie Marts' other work.

I also want to add that the writing was very similar to Jennifer Skully's books Baby I'll Find You, She's Gotta Be Mine, and Fool's Gold. So if you like those books, check this one out.

I received Another Saturday Night and I Ain't Got No Body for review as part of the tour hosted by CBL Book Tours in return for a honest review. Sunny is a school teach but with school out for the summer her friends have romance on the brain and finding Sunny Mr. Right is the new plan. It's been ages since Sunny's been on a date but agrees to date six different guys over the summer allowing her friends to set her up on blind dates.

As if Sunny's love life isn't enough to worry about her neighbor is missing and his sexy relative is living in his home, even rescuing her from Mr. Wrong. No matter how good looking Jake is it's clear to sunny as well as her friends that he's hiding something that may change everything which also takes him out of the running for Mr. Right. However neither one can deny the attraction for each other. Will Sunny meet Mr. Right on the dates or will Jake end up stealing her heart?

A fantastic humorous romance filled with mystery that keeps you guessing till the end. I found Sunny to be a great character who for me was easy to connect with. She's part of a book club that happens to consist of her friends from college and the elderly lady next door. Sunny however hasn't been all alone she's be joined by her faithful dog Beau. I found the title a little intimidating but the synopsis sucked me right in. Plus who doesn't love a romance novel that's filled with suspense and keeps you laughing. I finished Another Saturday Night and I Ain't Got No Body in one afternoon. It's a fast read that I easily was so drawn in I lost track of time. Overall it's a great story that I suggest checking out if your in the mood for a romantic mystery that will keep you laughing.

Cozy Mystery, Chick Lit, and Women’s Fic – this book is a very entertaining hybrid of all my favorite genres and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Schoolteacher Sunny Vale is a very likable and relatable heroine. She lives in small town Colorado, has an adorable golden retriever named Beau, a good relationship with her neighbors, and a wonderful group of friends. What she doesn’t have is a social life, but all that changes when the ladies in her book club decide to take turns setting her up on a different blind date six weeks in a row. Although Sunny humors her friends by going on these dates, which are increasingly hilarious and disastrous, the man who really revs her motor is the mysterious blond hunk next door. Jake Landon may or may not be responsible for the disappearance of Sunny’s elderly neighbor, Walter, so he’s not exactly good relationship material. Can she trust him, or will her heart lead her into danger?

There were a lot of laughs in this book (the doggy hijinks of Beau, all of the horrible, no good, very bad dates Sunny has to suffer through, and just about everything that comes out of the mouth of Edna, her octogenarian, CSI-loving friend), but there were also some genuinely scary moments (I’ll admit I had to read one scene under a blanket. Yes, I’m a wuss.) Author Jennie Marts is very witty, as evidenced by her clever book title, and she knows how to write a well-paced and engaging story populated with unique and memorable characters. Another Saturday Night was a terrific start to the Page Turners series and I look forward to reading future books, in which other members of the book club will step into the spotlight.

Fabulously fun read! Great premise and fun, quirky characters draw you in and take you on a wonderful ride. The action begins quickly and with each turn of the page, you're drawn into Sunny's world. And Sunny's world is generally that of a quiet school teacher's. However, this summer, her life becomes chaotic and full of mystery beginning with the blind dates her well-meaning friends set her up on because she needs some excitement in her life.
Little do they know, the excitement of the dates, along with looking for Sunny's missing neighbor will take some unusual twists and turns. Luckily, Jake is there to help pick up the pieces and save her from some less than comfortable situations. But can she trust him? His life is a mystery to her and some of her friends are convinced he is a murderer. Just when she thinks things can't get any stranger, they do, and it will be up to her friends to solve the mystery. Will Sunny find Mr. Right?
I'm not giving away the ending, but needless to say, it is worth getting there. I enjoyed the characters. Her quirky older neighbor is a crack up and someone I'd love to get to know. Another thing I appreciated about the books was the suspense. It was well crafted and kept me guessing. It was not too predictable which was refreshing.
