"Danger, magic, romance, and royal intrigue, AIRE is a must read!"
—NYT Bestselling Author JESSICA ANDERSEN

A tale of Legends reborn, royal intrigue, and an unforgettable, heart-melting romance that will sweep you away.

Annalisia is a seer, a princess with a courageous spirit—and a soft spot for Legends.

Jovanni is a Legend, a commoner with no patience for pampered royals.

Principessa Annalisia is stunned and conscience-stricken when an unknown enemy mistakenly abducts her maidservant. Determined to find the girl, Annalisia disguises herself as plain Anna and slips away from the palace. She tracks down Jovanni, her maidservant's daring older brother, and they soon begin to search together. As they uncover clues, Anna also discovers a kindred spirit in Jovanni. But would he be so free with her if he knew who she really was? Doubtful. Even so, she reveals her secret gift of visions to him, and in so doing disobeys the orders of her beloved grandmother, the queen.

With Jovanni, Anna can almost imagine she’s like any other seventeen year old girl, free to pursue the longings of her heart. When she learns that he also has a secret—he's a sentinel, an ancient shapeshifter who can take the form of a falcon—it seems as if they were destined to be together, as in the legends of il Sentiro. Though Anna is tempted to wish otherwise, she can’t forget that she’s a princess and it's her duty to marry another. Meanwhile, their hunt leads Anna ever closer to danger, for she herself is being hunted.

A princess and a commoner.

They never should have fallen in love...but they did.

AIRE is a lush, romantic fantasy, inspired by ancient Italy and Turkey.

Sometimes I think when I tell folks "I love romance" they don't really understand what I'm talking about. Romance is not sex. Romance is not marriage. For me, romance is love. True, everlasting, heroic love. It's also a moment in time, the touch of a hand, the scent of lilacs, a tiny bouquet of violets fit for a fairy queen...

Romance is about hope and courage and strength and loyalty. It's about simple acts of friendship. It's about forgiveness. It's about sacrifice.

Can a book have a heart and soul? Not just the characters, but a story? Yes, of course it can. Anyone who has clutched Harry Potter to her chest knows that truth. There are not many storytellers who can truly tap into that gift. You have to have the soul of a poet. You have to believe in the power of love.

And if you're a romance author, you need to believe in the HEA. Happy Ever After. It's not just a trite abbreviation. It's huge. It's the difference bewteen being cynical and bitter and hopeless and believing in happiness.

Let me just start this review by saying I don't read YA. In fact, I like much more mature characters, 40s and even 50s and beyond. But there are some things that defy age. Like friendship and courage and love. Goldfinch's story AIRE weaves fantasy and characters and setting and suspense into an extraordinary tale. Her writing is beautiful, the story is engaging, the suspense builds perfectly. But it's the romance woven into the story that brings it to sparkling life. And I realized, as I read this, that sometimes the most satisfying love stories don't need graphic sex. They just need longing and trust...and finally happy endings.

There is one thing I remember about The Language Of Souls --Goldfinch's first book that I read a long time ago. It's the kiss. The whole story leads up to one, perfect kiss. And it was filled with so much romance and love I was just amazed. This book has that same quality. I have never seen an author make a kiss so touching, and tender, and lovely, and perfectly satisfying. Like that little bouquet of violets. Sometimes our romantic moments don't need to be big or over-the-top or graphic. Small and simple and perfect are better.

After I finished this book I cried. For a long time. Goldfinch treats us to many happy endings in this story...for primary and secondary characters. I was charmed. I've never read a book that ensured ALL the characters were so well taken care of. It's my dream-come-true! Charming and adorable.

I am always on the look-out for something different and unique and special. This book surpassed all of my expectations. It is a gem that is so far my favorite read for 2013.

Grade: A+

Blissfully, blissfully happy,

Aire is about Annalisia, a Princess who has a special gift. When someone kidnaps Annalisia's servant, she disguises herself as "Anna", she leaves the palace, determined to find her servant and along the way she finds romance!

I absolutely LOVED this book, I couldn't put it down! It was well written, the characters were well thought out, the Italian setting is beautiful, the pacing is perfect, and the use of Italian words throughout the novel was a nice addition, making in more real. Annalisia is a heroine, she's courageous and determined.

Aire is an entertaining, romantic, thrilling and magical fantasy! I recommend it and I can't wait to read more from this author!!

Happy Reading!

I received an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

So. What can I say that doesn't sound trite or cliché? We'll see.

Well, speaking of clichés, here are the few that are in Aire:

1) Princess

2) Commoner

3) Arranged marriage

4) Magic

5) Romance

Sounds like a recipe for boredom and dullness, no? And yet, despite all that, Ms. Goldfinch has penned a very engaging read.

Our princess, Annalisa, is locked into a marriage to a neighbouring prince, whom she hasn't ever met, much less is in love with. So on the night of her pending engagement proposal she manages to convince her grandmother, the queen, to let her leave early. While she's leaving, her maid is captured in place of Ms. Anna, and so our enterprising princess disguises herself to look for the girl.

Bored yet? Don't be. I can't add any more plot points without going into spoiler territory, but this book was a quick, fun read. I never felt angry at the main character for a decision she made (sure I may not have liked it, but I didn't feel any rage towards her at any point. Always a good thing), and I truly enjoyed the interaction between Anna and Jovanni.

I'm in the process of reading some of the other stuff this author has written, and, truly, I'm pleased to say that her writing has stayed consistent. There isn't any amateurish punctuation (such as "?!"), nor any grammar mistakes that I observed, and even in the pre-publication copy I received only two spelling errors. All of this adds up to displaying an author who cares about her world, her characters, and her story. I'll be pleased to watch Ms. Goldfinch in the months and years to come.

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Aire by Lena Goldfinch is a historical fantasy that stars a young Italian princess named Anna, who has the power to see the future. This is a power she keeps hidden from everyone because others might not understand. Her hand in marriage is given to a suitor who she doesn't love, and in a burst of rebellion, she flees the dance that would announce this betrothal. As she flees, her boat is caught by mercenaries who mistake her clothmaiden for her. What happens next is a whirlwind of Anna trying to find her missing friend, falling in love for the first time, and learning how to think for herself.

The setting of this novel is beautiful-- we get the sense of the vastness and gorgeousness of Italian royalty. There is plenty of intrigue and plot twists. Anna is a good protagonist, and we also get to see in the head of the male protagonist, Jovanni. The supporting characters are strong, especially Ilan, one of her favorite servants. The last 20% of the novel moves at a quick pace and at that point, is hard to put down.

I did feel that the middle section dragged quite a bit, as we keep getting told that Anna and Jovanni are looking for the missing girl, and a lot of wandering takes place. I also wasn't a big fan of the Italian words that were plugged into the text to remind us she was in Italy-- but that's more a personal preference.

Overall, a beautifully written historical fantasy that introduces us to some great characters.

Annalisia is a courageous, impetuous princess. When her maid is mistaken for Annalisia and abducted, Annalisia knows she must set it right, and escapes her opulent palace disguised as a commoner, Anna. With the help of her maid's brother, Jovanni, she sets out on a dangerous quest to rescue her. But Annalasia is hiding more than just her true identity, she is also a seer. And Jovanni has a secret of his own: he is a shapeshifter who can take the form of a falcon. Annalisia and Jovanni are drawn together, despite the fact that Annalisia is pledged to another in an arranged marriage, and is keenly aware of her duty. As they travel their treacherous path their love blossoms, even though they are never far from peril as Anna herself is still hunted.

I was swept away from the very first page of this tale of royal intrigue, legends come to life, and a timeless romance that took my breath away. I highly recommend Aire for fans of romance, fantasy, or for those who want to escape into the pages of a beautifully crafted world with richly developed characters and exquisite writing.

Full review here at Once Upon a Story

Aire is a fantasy/romance/suspense story about Seer-Principessa Annalisa who embarks on a quest to find Mira, her friend and maidservant, who was kidnapped after being mistaken as the princess. She gains the help of her loyal friend, Ilan, and Mira's brother, Jovanni. She doesn't reveal her true identity to Jovanni, so for the first time in her life she feels like a normal girl in his presence. Jovanni, on the other hand, is keeping secrets of his own. He's a sentinel, a person who can transform into an animal, particularly a falcon. Together, they solve the mystery of who's plotting against the royal house of Isalla.

What I like the most about this story is the world and the prose. Isalla is very well crafted. I could envision the structures: the palace, the tombs, the docks, and etc. The culture was also very rich, particularly the clothes that they wore. I'm not very versed in Italian language and culture, but I'm guessing there's a lot of cultural references in there somewhere that I hadn't noticed. It's a world that I would really like to explore and immerse myself in. Of course, a lot of what I feel towards the world (and the story in general) is due to the lovely, lovely prose in this novel. The language fit the setting so beautifully. I hate it when I come across fantasy stories that are set in a different period or world but still use modern language and slang. I feel that it isn't appropriate and it takes me out of the narrative all the time. In this case, I was absorbed in the world. I loved the use of language here. Moreover, I like it's pacing as well. The details about this world is presented in a way that is not rushed. I found out of certain details at the time I need to find out about them. So, I have no qualms in terms of the technicality of the story.

Another thing I really liked about this is the romance. Individually, I have qualms against some of the characters. Annalisa, for example, got on my nerves numerous times because I felt annoyed of her naivete. I mean, it's politics. You have to maneuver the schemes upon schemes. And she's a princess. She should have been groomed for this! Anyway, when Anna and Jovanni are together, it's really very sweet. I like that it isn't insta-love. I like that I understood what it is about her that he is drawn to and what it is about him that she is drawn to. So the chemistry was there and I was rooting for them to be together. But most of all, I like that the romance didn't play such a big chunk of the story. The romance doesn't overwhelm the plot. As a result, the romance wasn't the center of the story but it actually enhanced the story because it was more peripheral rather than central.

On the other hand, what I didn't like about the story is the simplicity and straightforwardness of the plot. Maybe it's just me but when it comes to fantasy stories, I'm looking for the big stakes. What is the consequence of failing in the quest? What is the consequence of winning? The higher the stakes, the better. In this case, I didn't get the impression that so much was hanging on the balance if the bad guys win. Like, what would happen if there was no alliance between Isalla and Jeeran? Will there be a war? Will Isallan people starve, etc.? It just seemed like finding the kidnapped persons was only integral to their individual families and not for the whole country which would've been better.

Moreover, I felt like the plot wasn't complicated enough. Again, this may be just me. But when it comes to stories dealing with kingdoms, the politics has to be cutthroat. I would've preferred layers and layers of complications and red herrings. Instead, we know who the bad guys are right from the first quarter of the story because there are chapters written in their point of view. That kind of took the suspense out of the mystery. Also, the main villain wasn't a very well-depicted character. I feel like he's there because the story needed a main bad guy. The motivations of his minions were explained so I sympathized with them even though they're the bad guys, but the author didn't take the time to explain the motivations of the main villain. Up 'till the end, I didn't understand what was in it for the main villain to sever the alliance, stuff like that that made him not such a good bad guy.

There were also details in the story that I felt were not necessary. For example, the truth about Anna's mother or Anna's teacher's involvement. I didn't understand why details about that were foreshadowed but weren't utilized by the end of the story.

Despite these things, Aire was an enjoyable and satisfying read.

PS. Thank you Lena Goldfinch for providing me an ARC copy!

Aire was brilliant, just brilliant. It captured such a wealth of emotions, such depth of feeling! The characters were superb, the setting lush, the plot riveting. Harrowing, heart-wrenching, and yet delicious, this is not a tale I will soon forget!

Within the beautiful, royal palace, we are introduced to Princess Annalisia, a legendary seer, destined to spend her life hiding her gift and calling a man she doesn't love 'husband'. But she goes along with her grandmother, the queen's, doings; as do her older sisters, Helena and Liliana. Until her faithful maid is abducted. From there, strange things happen at an alarming rate. Things Annalisia could never have perceived. Things like meeting her maid's brother, Jovanni, and escaping the castle walls dressed as a washerwoman. Things like finding out she's not the only legend, and falling in love ... But in the midst of all this adventurous, frightening chaos, will the princess find a way to true love, or will she be destined to a marriage of duty?

*Sigh* I was captivated. The characters. The feeling. I don't know, you just have to read it to know how splendid of a tale it was. With just the right amount of suspense, danger, and action, Aire also took my breath away with its portrayal of the beauty of love. The host of characters charmed their way into my heart, even as they charmed each other. Annalisia, Jovanni, Ilan, Geminia, (and many more, I'm just not sure how to spell their names! lol) ... it was beautiful! The emotion of this story tugged at my heart ... non-romantic relationships very much included ... it held scenes that made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. So sweet. You must read Aire for the emotional depth if nothing else. *smiles and winks*

But it wasn't all romantic and sweet emotions. We also got inside the bad guy's head ... saw his feelings for his simple brother ... and my heart tugged again, this time with pain. It was so real. It so made you feel. Truly stunning and imaginative writing.

Let's see, as for negatives ... there is a scene with a girl named Sirena and the place she resides at which is quite ... sensual I guess. It's pretty obvious that its not the most respectable place, though there's not too in-depth details.

Romance ... though it was sweet and heart-melting for the most part, it was written for a little more of a mature audience I feel. I would say 15 years and up.

Spiritual aspects. There were quite a few references to the 'Most High'. And it is said Annalisia and other characters get their special gifts from the Most High. Also, there's praying and what not. I felt it had a nice air of faith, a trusting in God, an acknowledgment to Him for inhuman abilities. It wasn't SO spiritually in-depth, but it definitely had a spiritual element, which I appreciated! *smiles* And good values, lessons learned, important things brought to light ...

I want to keep gushing, but I won't, because I might give something away! But you should think about picking up Aire. A historical novel with a delightful fantasy touch ... a novel rich with feeling, both beautiful and heart-wrenching. It was just, lovely. I'm so excited to get my hands on another one of Lena Goldfinch's books! Perhaps a sequel? *winks*

I would like to thank Lena Goldfinch and NTOFYAB for gifting me a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review

After reading the synopsis I immediately fell in love with premise of Aire. I love fantasy and anything that has a hint of historical fiction/mythological writing, so this being based on ancient Italy/Turkey sounded right up my alley. Aire definitely lived up to my expectations. I loved the palace life mixed with suspense and fantasy that was contained in this story. I also fell in love with the characters immediately, especially Anna and Illan. Anna was the perfect combination of headstrong and loyal, and made for an amazing heroine that didn't let anything get in the way of what she believed was right... even if it sometimes meant what was right could make her unhappy in the end. I won't go into anything further because I hate giving away spoilers. I'm not really sure what made me love Illan so much, but he was just so loyal and always jumped right into whatever situation Anna needed him to just because she needed him.

There was a good amount of romance in Aire, and Ms. Goldfinch did an amazing job of making it believable. I was completely satisfied with the way the story ended (which a lot of times I can't say to be true). Aire was very well written, and the story flowed smoothly and beautifully. I only had a few small issues.... since I don't know Italian some of the phrases confused me for the first half of the story until I got used to them... but once I did I admit the fit very nicely into the dialogue. I had a hard time using the Lexicon to help me with the Italian because it's so hard to flip back and forth to it on an e-reader (but this could just be me being picky). I enjoyed the pace of the story, and thought that it moved quickly with lots of action... but, there were a couple parts of the story that felt a little rushed where as the main issue they were battling seemed to drag on a little bit toward the end for me. I did really enjoy that the author did a great job of keeping me guessing what was going to happen, and who to trust throughout the story.

Overall I loved Aire, it was a great light Romantic read with a lot of action and some mystery.

Spell binding.
Breath taking.
Heart melting.

Aire was an all-around easy, enchanting tale of a princess with curious powers, and a commoner with a secret; the two would have never met under normal circumstances, but a tragic occurrence brings them together, as they embark on a journey filled with magic, intrigue, action, and romance. Definitely suited for younger YA readers looking for a quality fantasy romance novel (as it was also a clean read). I will surely be on the lookout for more of Lena Goldfinch's books! :)

Firstly i would like to thank Lena Goldfinch for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book had many things I like in a book such as: Princesses, Magic, Forbidden Love, Arranged Marriage Complications, Heroes, Close Friendships and Multiple Narrators. However unfortunately there were also several things that i hate in a book such as: Questions being left unanswered (i could forgive this if i knew there were more books in the series however it doesnt seem that way), Vagueness and also having the villian not completely evil which makes you sympathise with them. i dont want to feel sorry for the baddy i want to hate him with every fibre of my being.

Now in expressing this i would like to just clarify i didnt hate this book nor did i love it i did however like it and would recommend you go grab yourself a copy because the author did tell the story brilliantly. this is the first book of its kind that i have ever read and if any of you know of similar storys like this one i would love for you to recommend them to me.

I should also tell you what Aire is about so our story starts here:
We first meet our leading lady Princess Annalisia when she is getting ready/ going to a ball in a neighbouring kingdom where her grandmother the queen has arranged without annalisia's knowledge for her and her two sisters Princess Helen and Princess Liliana to dance the Balladosa which is a dance in there custom to basically announce your betrothal to the one whom you are dancing with. Know as you can imagine this being sprung upon a 17 year old girl whom has never even seen her grandmothers choice for a husband, upsets her. All because her grandmother must make an alliance with each of these kingdoms incase an attack on her own kingdom occurs.

So in the middle of dancing the Balladosa with her newly betrothed Natius, he insults her albeit unknownling by that the tales of her homeland about Seers and Sentinels are meerly amusing little tales and childish. Unknown to Natius this hurts her more then words as she is indeed a seer. Now i must add that Seers and Sentinels are now extinct, they once were in the kingdom but now no more so being the only seer that lives Annalisia has kept her secret gift to herself. Now where was i ?? hmm yes annalisia is insulted so in the middle of the Balladosa she runs off.

Annalisia's grandmother allows her and her cloth maiden Mira to travel home by boat after the incident but on there travels they are ambushed by a man whom mistakens Mira for Annalisia and kidnaps her. This is wear the story really starts.

Annalisia makes it her goal to try and find Mira but by doing so must dress as a commoner and takes on the name anna weathy merchants daughter. With help from her dear friend Ilan they enlist Miras brother Jobanni whom is already in search for Mira. Together they all try to piece together clues in all sorts of forms including Anna's visions. When other girls turn up missing including Anna's sister Liliana they trio realise they are running out of time.

Ive tried not to give away to much but i must add that one of my pet hates is unanswered questions and there are several left at the end of the book such as: so many questions left unanswered!

So please take pity on me Ms Goldfinch and right a novella or another book to tie up these lose ends.
Oh and one more thing I LOVE THE COVER!!!!!!!!!!

Looking to escape into the magical realm of princesses, commoners, villains and political machinations, and, oh yes, forbidden love? Aire by Lena Goldfinch will carry you back to a time when appearances must be kept and alliances through marriage were a common and expected duty of a royal house. In a world where a princess can never be too cautious, often the object of a kidnapping or worse, young Anna is far too headstrong, bold and free-spirited for her own good, often daydreaming of finding her true love . About to be officially betrothed to a young noble she has known for a matter of minutes, Anna begs the queen, her grandmother to be allowed to return home, via boat, alone with only a small entourage of guards. A bold move on her part, to be sure, but in spite of the slight to her suitor, the queen reluctantly grants her request, one that will set off a nightmare of huge proportions as her clothmaiden and friend is mistaken for Anna and kidnapped. Filled with guilt, Anna has vowed to save her friend and restore her to her heartbroken family. How, in the midst of all this pain and turmoil, could it be possible for Anna to find her heart filled with love? To love Jovanni is forbidden, he is a commoner. He is also the brother to the missing clothmaiden, but is there more to him than meets the eye? Does he harbor a mythical secret power, just as Anna does?

The adventure unfolded quickly, and deepened with every page as the story took me on a journey back in time, to a land far away. There are characters you will love, hate and want to know better. Some will surprise you with their high sense of right and wrong, their intense loyalty and fierce protective nature. Some command the utmost respect for their loyalty, others for their power, but throughout, Anna and Jovanni’s persistence will have you cheering from the sidelines, or practicing your royal wave, at the very least!!

Fun, intriguing, a little magical and definitely a little sigh worthy in the romance department! I would like to thank the author for providing me with this review copy.

As a Principessa of Isalla, Annalisia is expected to marry a man of her grandmother's choosing and one of noble birth. Unfortunately Annalisia has no interest in the man that has been chosen for her. Granted it would be a great alliance for their country, but Annalisia can't imagine sharing her life or her secret with this man.

Yes, Annalisia has a secret. An ancient gift that nobody has seen in centuries. When Annalisia's handmaiden, Mira, is mistakenly kidpnapped in Anna's place she is determined to help find her. Jovanni, Mira's brother, is also searching for Mira. Anna and Jovanni join forces to try and find Annalisia and another girl that has been kidnapped. Jovanni is not afraid of Annalisia's gift/secret for he carries a secret of his own. As the two pursue danger and intrigue they become closer, but their affection can never go any farther than friendship. Jovanni is not of nobility and it would never do for a Principessa to marry a commoner.

I truly enjoyed AIRE! I loved the mythical aspect of it, I loved the setting and I loved the storytelling of the author. The characters were also endearing. I loved that both Annalisia and Jovanni knew they must honor custom over their hearts yet their love was so tender and sweet for each other. I also loved Ilan, Annalisia's friend and protector from childhood. The villain(s) were sufficiently evil without dipping too far into their depravity. I found the intrigue surrounding the castle to be exciting and I definitely loved both Annlisia and Jovanni's gifts. A sweet read and one that I would definitely recommend!

I received an ARC.

I will admit I love a book that captures my attention from the beginning and keeps me wanting more. Who wouldn't? If you are looking for a book that will whisk you away to a picturesque setting full of romance, mystery and intrigue, than Aire is the book for you.

Princess Annalisia has a secret ability very few people know about. She sometimes has visions. Princess Annalisia's gift may aid in the search for her missing maidservant who was taken by mistake. The whole castle is put on high alert to protect the princess from this unknown enemy. Jovanni has his own secret. He is able to change into a falcon. Jovanni has searched for his sister to no avail. A disguised Princess Annalisia comes to Jovanni offering her help. Together they will use their gifts to hopefully find his sister and to solve the mystery of the abduction.

Princess Annalisia is a strong character. She understands her duty but is still willing to fight for what she wants. Jovanni is honest and brave. He is willing to sacrifice everything for those he loves. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more from this author.

A princess and a commoner.

They never should have fallen in love...but they did.

First I would like to thank Lena Goldfinch for allowing me to read her book.

I recived this book for an honest review and here it is.
At first I didn't think I was going to like this book but I was wrong. I was crying at the end of this story! The tale of a rebelious young princess and a "commoner" fighting for lives of others. This story has it all heroisim romance death betrayl love sorrow and triumph.
Princess Anna is a seer and is wanted by a man to destroy her kingdom. He will stop at nothing to have her by his side. She is nearly abducted but the maidservent was taken instead. With Illan her faithfull friend and "brother" by her side she starts off to find her maidservent Mia. Jiovanni also looking for his sister Mia stumbles across the princess. The start a quest to find the missing girl and fall in love along the way.
The characters have such depths and personalities. The story is beautifully written and I hope there is a part 2 or at least a novela to tell us if Anna and Jiovanni wed!

This novel is a well written, sweet romance with a good dose of peril, intrigue, and fantasy. The Italian setting and use of Italian words throughout is a nice addition; the dialogue enhances the feel of their world. Their world came to life and allowed the reader to learn new foreign words. For most, a dictionary isn't needed, since context brings meaning.
The characters are likable, except for the villain of course. Annalisia is kind and unspoiled. Even her sisters are well-behaved; her grandmother, caring while regal - a pleasant change for the portrayal of royalty. I do wish the villain had a bit more back story and reason behind actions , other than the obvious. I may go back and see if I missed that.
Besides those little questions, I enjoyed this read. I enjoyed the legends Anna loved as a child coming to life within her and before her. I look forward to what other tales this author has in store for the future.

So it was quite a magical journey I experienced. It has all the cliché recipe for a fantasy book. But still Ms. Goldfinch has done a commendable job to keep it different from other fantasy novels we've read and movies we've seen. Story of Anna, seer who is a princess and Jovenni, sentinel who is a commoner , healers son. Suitable to be together but still forbidden. Their affection for each other grows amidst royal politics and trying to rescue the girl, Jovenni's sister who got abducted in place of Anna. I liked the side characters as well like Ilan, Natius, Prince Tallen. Romance is very sweet, the book describes true love not lust in any form. It also gives a message that we should not be ashamed of our powers rather use it for good purposes. I enjoyed reading it. Hope we'll get to read more such books from Lena Goldfinch.

THE GOOD

1. Anna was beautifully done character, and leapt on the page.

2. Jovanni was such a good, good, good character.

3. Lots of shipping went on here. Tons and tons and tons.

4. This story kept me on my toes

5. The world-building was original and fresh, with splashes of Italian culture.

6. Though this was a romance, it was also an adventure. There were kidnappings and all sorts of fun fantasy elements.

7. Jovanni is cute when he's jealous.

8. This was such a rich and well-told story.

THE BAD

1. The story was, at times a little confusing.

FOR THE PARENTS
There is some mild kissing, and some fighting. Nothing over the top, though.

I rate it five stars!

Rating: 3

My opinion:

I'd like to start this by saying that some of the problems I had with this book are probably the reason why some others really liked it. One could say that I knew what I was getting into, but I really kind of didn't. I have read some high fantasies and historical romances, or whatever this was, in the past. But very, very few. And by that I mean that I can count them with my two hands. I'm more fond to contemporary/futuristic worlds, whether they are realistic or fantastic. That said, I think I should stay in the present or the future.

I had two major issues with this book. First of all, the pacing. Oh, my. I admit I'm one of those who says "Why fast when you can have lightning?". I also tend to dislike extensive inner monologues. Sue me, but I like less talking and more doing. So, this book wasn't necessarily full of talking, but what they did was repetitive. The beginning was entertaining, and the ending was quite good as well. But then there was that sixty percent in the middle that took me days to read. Between Anna, Ilan and Jovanni trying to figure out who had Jovanni's sister, and Hendri, the guy who had her, talking about his brother I almost leave the book. It had lots of potential, but it lacked action. I say you throw in rabid koalas who shape-shift into cats, chicken nuggets, and some kind of sword duel between a stoned magician and a cursed drug dealer. Or something as exciting as that.

The other problem I had with this book was the romance. Here's where it gets really personal. It was too cheesy. And generic. It's not that I wasn't rooting for Jovanni and Anna, but I got to a point where I just wanted them to get it over with. And the contradictions! There was a bit of insta-attraction, yes. However, they didn't instantly know they were meant for each other. I liked that! I liked the tension! And then there was this scene halfway through the book where they are watching the stars and it's all cute one moment, and the next rainbows are thrown all over it. Some pages and SHE DROPS THE L-WORD! Finally, they both internally agree that they knew it was fate or something. Maybe this what the fans of the genre like, how the times of veils and tunics were, but it wasn't it for me. Not my cup of tea, or however kids call it these days (I wouldn't know because I stay all day in my room reading romances so I can bitch about them later).

Now, now, it wasn't all bad. Not at all. I'd say that even though the book had two huge NOs, there were two huge YES, PLEASE! MORE! If I had to name one thing that was under a shiny light, I'd say the characters. Anna was what authors who don't want to write an overly feminist woman should go for. I love chicks like Dani O'Malley or Kate Daniels, who are "their own super-hero" or "would rather be stabbed in the eye than be called cute". They're my favorites, but I understand that not all women are like that. Problem is, most people in books go from that to Bella Swan or Nora Grey. Back to Anna, she was a great woman. She was, indeed, lady-like and didn't want to become a physical fighter. But she wasn't helpless. Instead of complaining about how much bigger and stronger her captors were she used her mind to figure a way out. Hilarity wasn't her strenght, but she did tease her best friend. Not once did I read a description that made her seem like some kind of beautiful goddess, one of a kind, never before seen in the kingdom. A brave young woman, that's what she was. And realistic one, regardless of her "power" and her title. I really liked all the other characters as well. Jovanni's caring personality was endearing and Ilan's loyalty was something to behold. Even Natius, Jovanni's "rival", was quite charming and not the asshole most authors make of the third wheel. I feared the villain, an intelligent mad man, and respected Josefina, a harsh but necessary queen. Disgust went through my every cell when I read about Hendri, and I never cheered as much as I did when Mira was freed. Lilia, Anna's sister, reminded me a lot of Jane in Pride and Prejudice with her innocence and kindness. And then there was my favorite character, the prince who literally climbed a wall knowing the guards would caught him because he thought his love was caged there. Tallen was ten times the man any of the other male characters were. A good friend to Anna and Natius, a good lover to Lilia, a good future king for his people, and a good person in general. You go, Tallen!

Characters aside, I thought the writing was really nice, if you took the casual cheesiness away. The descriptions weren't overwhelming and, like I said before, there weren't that many boring inner monologues that told what happened instead of showing it.

Overall, this was a good book. It just wasn't my book. The rating is based on how much I enjoyed it, and it is an I liked it, but it didn't wow me. I honestly don't regret reading Aire, but I won't be doing it again either.

Yet true."

I started reading this book not knowing what to expect (being saying that a lot recently), except that it was fantasy, because I’m familiar with Lena’s work/genre.

The plot was pleasantly complex in its own way, but mildly so. Characterization was in-depth, and the setting was sensationally alluring. But what I loved most was the dialogue. It was intricately woven with words of English and Italian. You wouldn’t have to understand Italian to get the meaning, or the objective. Lena tucked them in, in such a way that—what do I call it?—it was a Language of the Souls? {Lol! Read this book (and Language of the Souls), and you’ll get my meaning. :)} Words like “cara”, “amore”, “finito”, “Balladosa”, spoke to my heart and just made me want to learn Italian. Honestly, if I wasn’t close to the final stages of editing To Die Once, I’d borrow Lena’s dialogue catalogue and sprinkle Italian ALL OVER IT! Not kidding! (I just might;) )
Now, what to expect from Aire … it’s a story rich with culture and suspense. Lena didn’t spare her imagination with this piece. She created a whole new world, yet it felt so real you could relate to it!

In Aire, you’re thrown into the world of the monarch and all the drama (and chaos) that comes with it. Emotions like love, fear, anxiety, hope, bitterness, anger, distrust, faith, and elements such as lies, truth, promise and many others were strewn all over this story. It kept me guessing as to how this would end in any way acceptable to anyone who sympathized with the characters. In the end, it is clear that the lives of the royals can be very much affected by commoners, so that we can see that monarchs are as human and vulnerable as everyone else.

My favorite character was Ilan. I’m sorry that he wasn’t given more space in this story as I really felt the plot limited his character much. I found myself wishing he was so much more, or had been given more as a reward. Thankfully, a bit of that was taken care of in the end. Although I wish I knew exactly what that reward was. Perhaps, Lena will write a story for this guy? (Hinting here! ;))

Another character that caught my attention was Natius, second only to Ilan in my list of favorites. Lena introduced him into the story in a way that piqued my interest. Like Anna initially did, I started to dream up positive possibilities for this guy. Like I did for Ilan, I wished he had better. The noble role he played towards the end of the story settled him in my heart for good! Having being introduced to Ilan and Natius first, it took a good bit of time for me to warm up to Jovanni because those two guys stole my allegiance. Jovanni initially came up as a very rude intruder to the story I had started cooking up in my head, and he had to fight for his place in my heart well up to half of the book—no kidding! But somewhere on a certain rooftop, like Anna, I opened my heart to him. But Lena, seriously, give Natius and Ilan a story. They deserve it! Don’t you think? ;) Natius has the look and status, and Aire already set such a great premise for him. And Ilan, well, he has such potential!

I love that this book wasn’t just two people’s love story. No sir! Although it was mainly about Anna and Jovanni, maids, tutors, princes, princesses and soldiers weren’t left out. Monarch or commoner, this plot didn’t make it easy on anyone. EVERYONE had to fight for their love, giving the plot its interesting complexity.

The lessons gleaned from this wonderfully complex piece are just amazing. Honestly, when God has designed that two people should come together, fall in love, and live happily ever after, NOTHING and NOBODY can get in the way. He will create events that will bend policies and change rules, so that you can be elevated to receive His gift. This was the case with Jovanni. I tell you, I thought, and wondered, and pondered on how in the world Lena would finish the story in a way that would accommodate God granting Jovanni his heart desire. But once again, this story proved that God is not a God subject to odds, but is a God of miracles. The hand of God is NEVER too short to accomplish anything, nor can His power be limited by the vastness of odds. In fact, the more the odds, the bigger the miracle. Right?

Also, Queen Josefina—Anna’s grandmother—recognized the potential threat to her kingdom. And of course, like any responsible monarch who wanted to leave a secure and lasting legacy for her grandchildren and the generations to come, she took matters into her own hands. She thought of a plan, which by any human standard was an excellent one. But the “Most High” had other plans. Indeed, “man conceives in his heart, but it is the Lord that orders his footsteps.” And here-in, is a lesson in trust.

It took a while for this story to sink in as I read it, but somewhere along, it gripped me and wouldn’t let go. And in the end, I’m glad I read it! The end certainly put a smile on my face. Folks, I recommend Aire. It is not the typical fantasy book you see out there. It is fresh, complex, bitter-sweet (with emphasis on the story ending sweetly), and rich/breathtaking in its dialogue and setting. At this point, I will say I’m … finito. Lol!

I was lucky enough to receive this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This story is set in a land that seems a cross between a combination of several of our historical periods and a completely created magical land. The fact that much of it seems to be Italian helps the reader to relate, yet it isn't so grounded in known culture that we can't accept the magic and the areas that deviate from what we know in our world.

The history of Isalla is complicated and like all sovereign countries, heavily impacted by its alliances. And it is also filled with a history of magic:

“The poets of old spoke of Seers gifted with waking dreams,
of Sentinels, who could take the form of the beasts of the air, forest, or sea,
and who watched over the sacred lands.

Then the age of gifts came to an end.

Over a hundred years, Seers and Sentinels became as Legends,
stories told to wide-eyed children at night.”

Yet magic, and possibly the Age of Gifts, may have returned, at least in some small measure. As is true with most books of magical places, this one also contains romance, and many events and even people who would challenge the power of true love. All that remain of Isalla's once large royal family are the three beautiful principessas, Helena, Liliana, and Annalisia, along with their grandmother, the Queen.

This story is about all of these royals, but mostly in relation to the youngest princess, Annalisia, also known as Anna to a select few of her inner circle of friends. Anna becomes embroiled in a large plot due to her efforts to rescue a friend, one who'd not have needed rescuing were it not for a generous, but unwittingly dangerous act on Annalisia's part.

Enter the requisite handsome man, there to conspire with Anna in her efforts to locate and rescue her missing friend. However he quickly becomes far more than a simple companion in this dangerous journey. Though they both have different reasons for wanting to rescue the missing maiden Mira, they keep some deep secrets from one another, each for their own reasons. Secrets kept with the best of intentions that lead to confusion, danger, and misunderstandings - each of which could forever alter the course of their lives and the lives of the ones they love.

Ms. Goldfinch has created an enjoyable fantasy realm where fairy tales still exist, right alongside with terror filled nightmares. In crafting a world that is so well grounded in the familiar she has made it all the more believable for the reader. As if it could be part of our own ancient history. She has blended the fantasy and reality so well that one can't find the seams; it is impossible to tell where one begins and other ends.

Populating this magical world with realistic, relatable characters has made the story flow that much more smoothly. And the characters are interesting, often the kind you'd want to meet and become friends with, if not go beyond friendship with. Part of what makes her characters so interesting is watching them grow and mature through their experiences. In a few spots some of them seem to make leaps in their emotional and/or behavioral advances that feel slightly to large to be realisitic, but it is clearly done to help advance the plot.

Aside from a very few minor wrinkles this is a fun read, filled with danger and excitement, the giddy rush of falling in love paired with the endless well of heartbreak, true love lost and true love found. And though the book ends without any hints of a sequel, there is more than enough material to continue on this journey with our new-found friends and recently discovered villains.

A fantasy written so you can see it like you're actually there. It's a story that's entertaining and surprising which you'll certainly enjoy.
Even fantasies, with their creative, innovative and novel stories can become predictable. So reading one that has interesting or surprising details makes the read really fun.
This story involved a princess that had a rare gift, but needed life to show her the true value of it. Being protected and sheltered from the real world, she was ill equipped to handle being outside of the palace walls. But being a stubborn and fiercely loyal and giving person she drew others loyal to her, which gave her the help she needed to fulfill her steps to destiny.
As is true in real life, destiny cannot be manipulated, it just is. We may have choices, but what is supposed to happen, will. For princess Annalisia, her destiny unfolded in a way she had never imagined. Those things only happened in the fairy tales she was told as a child, maybe somewhere in real life but most certainly not in her life; at least nothing other than her special gift. So how she handled these events was pretty true to how you would expect her to, which gave her the pinch test of being real. It created the marker for becoming her friend, feeling her emotions, and enjoying her company.
You know the saying, rules are made to be broken, well in Annalisia's case, rules were not to be made in the first place. That's only because to bind her with rules would be to smother her flame, and without her bright and beautiful spirit, the life of this story would be gray indeed. She had an energy and wonderful outlook that kept you entertained, amused, and happy. She is a fun character to follow.
The supporting characters were also with their own personalities that stood out from Annalisia's but at the same time, enhanced her. Every one of them.
Even though as a princess she was not allowed certain freedoms with other stations in the social hierarchy, the very existence of it ensured her attention, both good and disruptive. She just could not be bound, by anything. That very simple word was an assurance of something happening. It absolutely had to. It was her destiny. That attention included her fate. Her heart screamed for what she couldn't have, while her mind strove to stay calm and centered as the princess she was taught to be.
If you like romances, and fantasy, then you will certainly enjoy this book. And trust me, you will look to read Lena's other books too.

Please note, I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest review through the group, Never Too Old For Y.A. & N.A. Books. Ultimately, I got the book for free via a Smashwords code from the author. This in no way effects my final review of this book.

I liked it well enough, but felt that there could have been a little more depth with the characters.

You mostly follow Annalisia and Jovanni. Annalisia is a princess, who is also a seer. When she touches certain objects that were of importance to someone, she sometimes is able to see what is happening to that person. Or sometimes she just has a vision on her own. After Anna leaves her betrothed at a party and insists upon going home across the water, her boat is attacked. During the attack, her maidservant, Mira, is mistaken for the princess and abducted.

Anna, who feels guilty that Mira was taken instead of her, sets out to find her friend and maidservant. During the search she ends up teaming up with Jovanni, a commoner and Mira's brother. Things get even more intense when one of Anna's sisters is abducted and a few more attempts are made to abduct Anna. It would seem that someone is trying to disrupt the proposed alliance between two kingdoms.

During the course of the search Anna and Jovanni fall in love? But they can't be together or can they? Apparently there is a legend of a princess marrying a sentinel. Which Jovanni apparently is.

I feel that the basic parts of a good story are all here, but overall, I felt like the story was lacking depth. I felt there could have been more trials for the couple during the search or more interactions. Too me it almost seemed like at some point the author just told me they were in love. I don't feel like she did a very good job of showing me through the story and developing that love. There are several brief mentions of a legend, but the legend is never really fully told. I wish the full legend was included in the book somewhere. I also felt some of the side characters, had more depth, like Anna's betrothed or even Mira or the bad guy. To be perfectly honest I almost feel like this wonderful story has been dumbed down in order to be considered a YA book, which really is a shame.

I don't regret reading the story, and overall, I liked it. I think this story might have actually been better if it was broken up into a trilogy, so more depth could have been added. I do like how the story was inspired by ancient Italy and Turkey, but even that could have been fleshed out a little more.

I was very honored to be given a copy of this book by the author for a review. I thoroughly enjoyed her short story The Language of Souls, so I looked forward to reading Aire.

Please disregard how long it took me to finish this book. It in no way reflects how great the story was. I've been very sick off and on for the past few weeks and with school coming to an end, my life was very hectic.

I enjoyed this story from start to finish. Lena Goldfinch has to be on the best world builders ever. She even developed an entire lexicon for this story. The story had everything: action, mystery, romance, comedy, mythology, drama, and everything else I can't think to name. This type of book is usually not my thing, but I'm very glad I gave it try. I fell in love with Anna's story, her growth as a character was fascinating to read through. All the mythology of the world was fascinating as well. All in all, the world was magnificent and quite a thrill to read about.

I also really enjoyed switching POVs. You got the full picture of what was going on and how people were feeling. I've grown to dislike first person for the lack of these very things. Also, Lena Goldfinch has a beautiful way with words. I enjoyed her imagery most of all. I felt like I could see Isalla in my mind. I also enjoyed that there were stories within the story. But you didn't feel overwhelmed trying to keep up. It all flowed very well. I also really appreciated how neatly things were wrapped up in the end. There was just enough for you to build your own epilogue without it being completely decided by the author. I've read books that just seem to leave parts of the inner stories completely undeveloped and it frustrates me. Thank you for not doing that.

In conclusion, this is a lovely story that has all the elements of an enthralling novel and I very much enjoyed it.

Princess Annalisia has been betrothed in marriage to a man who she does not know who scoffs at her traditions. She escapes the betrothal party with her cloth maid Mara is taken, and Anna believes it was really her that was suppose to be kidnapped. She has so much guilt, she and her best friend Ilan the falcon keeper, track down Mara's older brother Jovanni to help find the girl. What results is an action packed story, full of secrets, hidden motivations, and a sweet forbidden love.
The book was really good. The author Lena Goldfinch has a way of describing a scene but making it seem so lyrical,as if the words flow to create the image. I am not usually a huge fan of history, but it seemed to come alive in this story. The one thing I would have liked a little better was if the Italian words used were then described in detail so I could understand it better. Veils were a big part of the life of the Italian girls, but I was never sure how they were worn or looked. It drove me crazy. Yes I know that is picky, but that was really the only issue I was hung up on.
Anna was a strong character, who followed through on what her heart told her was right. She has a gift that she has hidden from everyone, but she tells those around her to help find the truth.
Jovanni was an interesting character, he was living a lie because he was afraid of being scorned for who he really was. He was really sweet, even when he was so conflicted about what he wants. I liked their romance, I just wished they had more scenes together in the book. Having both characters perspectives was really nice because it allowed the reader to understand the characters motivation.
I don't know how I feel about the information about Anna's family, it seemed so open as if another book could be made to help wrap up the open ends.

The summary of this book really sounded great so I volunteered to review this story. The first chapter or two did not suck me in right away but once I got a little way into the book I could not put it down. Also I loved the cover too.

I love Annalisia in this story. She can’t sit by and not try to help even though she is a royal and someone may be out to get her. She has to try to find her maid servant regardless of the harm that may come to her. Jovanni was a great character also. His feelings especially his jealousy really shined through in the story.

I liked the legend of the ancients weaved into this story and how it applied to the two main characters. The land that this book is set in was beautifully written. I liked the addition of the Italian words throughout the book. If you needed to know the meaning of them they are in the front but I had no trouble figuring it out from the rest of the sentences or paragraphs.

I did wish there was a little more about Ilan and the maid that he liked. Even though she was mentioned several times we never did really get to read about them together or anything. The author did tie up the loose ends with the villians quite nicely as well as Anna’s sisters. You could almost make a sequel to this story with the next adventure of Anna and Jovanni and let her meet her mother and brothers. I don’t know if there will be another one or not though.

All in all I want to read more of the books this author has written. I do love a good romance and I also enjoy reading fantasy. This book combined them both very well and I hope the best for Annalisia and Jovanni.

Three Thumbs up!

A Destined Seer and Sentinel Shapeshifter combined with a Forbidden Love between a Princess and a Commoner - I'm a sucker for clean romance and first love. And I love the idea of a seer and sentinel shapeshifter (falcon). It was a refreshing concept. Their love was simple and sweet.

>Lasting Friendship - I love the bond between Ilan & Annalisia. It felt natural and not forced. The teasing banter between the two shows how good the writer build their connection. If not for Jovanni, I'll definitely give the white flag to Ilan.

>Royal dilemma - I like the bad side and drama in the royal court. I'm not too sure about Marius' persuasion powers but I can say it is a good one to start a fight.

>The author let the other characters shine in their own little way- I like how Prince Tallen become pierce & strong to find his beloved. Gemenia & Quintimus's secret world. Mira's battle. The Queen's own struggle. Those characters clump together to make a good story.

> I was looking forward to Annalisia's mother in the book or one of his brothers. I was waiting for something big to happen but it never came.

> The action part was a little too short for me. I was expecting more of a heart pounding scene between the villains and the heroes.

I would recommend this to those who want a refreshing, not too complicated fantasy romance and thrill for little adventure.Overall, I like it!

Principessa Annalisia is a seer but this kept secret by her grandmother the queen. On her way home after an awful party her cloth maiden, Mira, was mistaken for her and was abducted. Wracked with guilt, she is determined to find her friend, so she disguises herself as Anna, along with her loyal servant Illan, and joins up with Mira’s older brother, Jovanni, to search for her together. Jovanni, unknown to Anna, is a Sentinel, a person able to transform into a falcon, and as they grow closer together they realise they are from completely different social worlds and are unable to be together. With them uncovering clues and with other girls getting kidnapped, will they be able to rescue Mira in time.

Aire is an enjoyable light fantasy romance, but it was not what I was expecting when I read the blurb, as I thought it was going to be more of a quest than it was. This book felt very vague, like a watered down adult book, and is full of clichés.

Anna is a free-spirited princess but she is also very stubborn as she will do want she has put her mind to, but she is also very naïve. Jovanni is brave, devoted to those he cares about but also hides a big part of himself from everyone.

A lot is left unanswered in this book and I felt it was not as good as The Language of Souls but still likable. I would recommend Aire to fans of light YA fantasy romance.

I got a copy in ARR program in David Estes and YA book lover group.

At first I stumbled on this book, I know that I gotta love this. and gosh, I was right. this romance book could satisfied my craving for romantic action, lol.

I always love fairy-tale. even until now, I still do. that's why I first think this book by Lena Goldfinch will be a great reading. cause it does sounds like a fairy-tale. and as I read it I could picture all the scenes just like I watch Disney cartoon movies.

I love the idea, a story of a princess falling for a commoner, which turned out not a really "common" commoner.

Annalisia is a strong character, a kind girl with a good heart. she suits the main role perfectly. Jovanni, as her main attraction has a great personality as well. I love him throughout the entire story, and I couldn't help myself to wonder how would he will be like in reality. a Legend.

I can't really says anything more as it would lead to spoiler, but one thing I should mention is I love Lena's writing style. it's clean, neat, and fluidly getting words and words together creating a good imagination and a very nice detail also.

you will not regret reading this. and I can't wait to read another book by her

This book is a lovely sweet story, of an age where courtship and betrothals were ceremoniously displayed in front of gathered crowds and honour was earned. A book of mystery, secrets, friendship, trust, love, betrayal, kidnap and magical tails that enlighten the imagination, it’s a good all round book.

The book tells the story of Princess Anna, the youngest of three sisters who has had there betrothed picked out by the queen, her grandmother.

After a disastrous meeting and courtship dance with her betrothed, Anna flees back to her boat to return home, though is ambushed on the way back and her maid is taken by mistake. Now on a quest to find her maid, Anna sets out with her friend Ilan in secret search to find her and the adventure begins to solve this mystery and learn about hidden secrets.

The book is well written and described well in a narrated writing style and is well suited for readers of all ages. I personally like a little bit more passion and something to get me hooked in a little bit more, though this is my personal preference.

Though all in all I really like the book :)
