The Story of Racheltjie de Beer

Rate this book
When their wagon breaks down, the De Beers are forced to find shelter on a local farm in the Eastern Free State of South Africa. Winter has arrived and, as dark clouds laden with snow start to roll over the Drakensberg mountains, tragedy strikes.

Inspired by the beloved tale that has been passed down from generation to generation, this is a poignant story of hardship, sacrifice and selfless love set against the harsh backdrop of the South African bushveld during the 1800s.

A wonderful story that I loved reading. As a South African told this story as a child it was so nice to read about it again in my adulthood. I recommend you read it!

That being said, the writing is not very good and you will have to forgive silly mistakes and typos, so the 5 stars I awarded this novel is more for cultural content than anything else. By no means a masterpiece of literature but still something that I will give my children to read one day. It is an inspirational story everyone should know.
