A vampire on guard. A psychic on the run. A cabin with one bed.
Jameson Whitlock trusted the wrong person. Again. As a walking lie detector, he should be able to tell when he's being played, but so far, he hasn't had the best of luck. After yet another kidnapping attempt, he leaves town in a hurry and runs to his uncle's fishing cabin to hide.
Harland Duke comes back after having fed only to find a light on in the cabin. Had he known there would be takeout, he wouldn't have bothered to go into town.
No one is happier than Harland that he didn't snack on the man sleeping in his bed when it turns out he’s his boss' nephew. Jameson isn't pleased with having to share the cabin with a vampire, but it's not safe to return home yet. To pass the time, he spends his days fishing, but what's easiest to catch -- a fish or a vampire?
According to Holly Day, no day should go by uncelebrated and all of them deserve a story. If she’ll have the time to write them remains to be seen. She lives in rural Sweden with a husband, four children, more pets than most, and wouldn’t last a day without coffee.
Holly gets up at the crack of dawn most days of the week to write gay romance stories. She believes in equality in fiction and in real life. Diversity matters. Representation matters. Visibility matters. We can change the world one story at the time.
Rating - 3 stars Okay I likes the book and all but I was so confused? Were we supposed to get a prequel or something? The start felt too abrupt. And everything was confusing and felt entirely disconnected from each other 😐 And the romance. The chemistry? What chemistry?????!! 🫠 That specific romance confused me so much that I actually paused reading for a few moments. It doesn’t make sense???? Sure, I’d love to see more of this bureau but this specific story felt so rushed. The only thing specifically worth mentioning was having a bear shifter named Teddy 😂 But the rest is easily forgettable
This was my first book by Holly Day and I really enjoyed it. I’ve been experiencing a reading slump lately so it took me longer to read than it usually would.
I liked Jameson and Harland. A vampire and a psychic is an interesting combination. If you throw in a ring kidnapping vampires and you get an exciting love story. The ending was a little abrupt, but I certainly plan to read the next book.
Holly Day is guaranteed to produce a story that will grab you from the beginning and not let go. How to Hook a Vampire is not an exception.
Holly creates characters that you become invested in. No matter 'what' they are, whether they are human, shifter, vampire, alien or something 'other', they all demonstrate characteristics that draw in the reader. The are all multi faceted and well developed (even in a shorter novella), and whether you love or love to hate that particular character, they still resonate with the reader.
In How to Hook a Vampire, both MCs have their own personal demons/issues, and while both are lovely characters, they are both still flawed characters, and that just makes them all the more loveable!
I've often found with Holly's books it's sometimes better to go in relatively blind, so I don't want to add anything too specific about the story, except to say it is lovely, with a gorgeous ending, and well worth the read.
I really enjoyed my time with How to Hook a Vampire, and I highly recommend it.
It’s hard to overstate how much Jameson’s life has been shaped not just by his gift, but by the trauma his gift has brought him, and it’s hard not to respect the heck out of his resilience, his irreverence, and ultimately his willingness, despite being burned multiple times in the past, to trust someone again. Not that it’s an easy or pretty process, and not that Harland, vampire and demolitions aficionado, doesn’t have trauma and baggage of his own. I occasionally despaired of the bleakness of their circumstances: both characters are going to be hunted their entire lives, no matter what, and that…sucks, but I did love the chemistry between them and the fact that they both step up to protect each other, and others, again and again. An interesting read with really compelling characters and an immersive plot.

Jameson has had a bit of a rough time lately but turning up like Goldilocks in Harland's bed is the start of things finally falling on his favor. His ability as a truth version of metal detector was very unique and intriguing. I would so not mind revisiting these wonderful characters.
I always enjoy Holly Day's stories. While they tend to be on the short side they always have a complete storyline. Jameson has a unique psychic ability. However, it hasn't helped him one bit in avoiding pitfalls or getting involved with the wrong people. He's on the run and ends up at a distanced uncle's cabin in the woods. Unbeknownst to him it's currently occupied by a vampire, Harland. Neither one wants to be around the other. Harland is asked by his boss, Jameson's uncle Frank to watch over him. As they slowly get to know one another they become involved. Jameson is dealing with some trauma from his recent past and Harland is dealing with a rejection from someone who he believed cared about him but was ultimately just using him. I thought it was so cute how quickly Harland became so protective of Jameson and how irritated the cutesy names Jameson called him made him until he realized they were terms of endearment and not meant to be mocking. There was some fast paced action as Harland is placed in danger and Jameson is put in a near fatal situation while rescuing him but does recover from. The epilogue was cute and I really enjoyed seeing Harland and Jameson getting their very well deserved HEA.
4.5🌟 stars I could not put this one down! I loved the action, the suspense and the developing relationship between the two main characters. Shifters, vampires, psychics, exploitative humans: How to Hook a Vampire had them all in a really catchy, fast-moving plot.
My favorite character? Beleaguered vampire Harland, who first has to endure a surprise cabin mate when he just wants solitude, and seems to have a defensive arsenal to rival a small (but well-equipped!) army. He'd rather reserve his fangs for a good meal than fighting off enemies when a good explosive booby-trap, rifle, gun or knife would do the trick. And I got a good chuckle out of his antipathy for cute words of endearment.
Jameson, the psychic MC who is in peril thanks to his ability to sense truth and lies, leads Harland a merry dance until they decide to join forces to figure out who to fear and why.
Entertaining? Yes (truth). Good action scenes? Yes (truth). Steam? Yes, a bit (truth). Not recommended? (lie)! The read made for a very enjoyable afternoon.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
As with all Holly Day's books, this book is very well written and a dream to read. Her ability to develop characters in a short amount of words is remarkable. I loved this story! The write up alone is enough to get you hooked. This is the story of Jameson Whitlock and Harland Duke. The book starts off like Goldilocks and the three bears. Jameson is on the run. Desperate for a safe place to hide, he goes to his uncle's cabin. Locks the door and immediately crashes in the bed. Harland has just returned from town and finds a stranger has broken in and gone to sleep in his bed? It is just strange enough to have him calling his boss, Jameson's uncle. Both these men have had hardships in their lives. Slowly they begin to appreciate each other and start to form a relationship. This is their story. I loved the idea of a human lie detector. It was an unusual character that I really enjoyed. Jameson and Harland make a wonderful couple. Their personality traits compliment each other. Another wonderful book by this author.

I trust Holly Day to deliver me unique and interesting stories, and this one is no different. It has some action and mystery, and you never know what's going to happen. I like it.
I found the romance a little underdeveloped and coming out of nowhere, though it never bothered me a great deal. What bothered me more is that a lot of the story is questions and answers, as Jameson can tell the truth and he tries to figure out what is happening. It reminded me of the author's The Maddest of Men. I get that it was needed for the story; I just wished it would have been backed up by more romance. Balance is key.
All in all, another interesting read by one of my favorite authors.
Please take note that the story includes some violence and blood.
I really enjoyed this even though I found it a heavier read emotionally. I’m not sure honestly that it is heavier than her recent books, but for some reason I felt like this one just hit in a different way. Harland and Jameson have had so much sadness in their lives and while they have found each other I could help but feel there was likely a fair amount more sadness coming for them. Maybe I’m in a gloomy mood, but it just felt like this was a bittersweet one where their love is a shining light of good between them but they’ll still be surrounded mostly by darkness. That being said, what they found with each other really was a shining light for them. I was glad they actually found something they could trust and that they took that leap (Jameson especially). Even though I feel like I’ve read it with a bittersweet sense, I definitely think it’s a great read.
I love Holly's writing but sometimes it's a bit hit and miss. This is a definite hit. Jameson and Harland's story was short but with enough detail and history to know who they were without labouring the point. Uncle Frank was a suitably mysterious figure and Teddy turned out to be, well, a bit of a teddy bear. Carl was just an idiot. I felt so sorry for what Jameson had endured, and I loved Harland's explosive tendencies and his hidden weapons and booby traps. Would I have loved a full book rather than a novella? Yes, I absolutely would. Did I feel cheated because it wasn't longer? No, absolutely not. Would I love to read more about their world, Uncle Frank's organisation, and Teddy, and see more of Jameson and Harland? Yes, yes, yes, and yes. I'll leave it to you to work out which of those answers, if any, is a lie.
One of the reasons I enjoy Holly Day stories is that they are lighter and always have a happy ending. How to Hook a Vampire has the requisite ending, but in some respects it is a little more somber than their typical book. Jameson has had a very rough life before he meets Harland at Jameson’s uncle’s cabin and does not realize his luck is about to change. It was interesting to see the variations in psychic abilities in Jameson’s family, including his uncle. As a big fan of the paranormal, I always like a good vampire tale and this book provides that. While not quite an enemies-to-lovers trope, neither Jameson nor Harland liked the other at first. But of course that changes and it is fun to see it happen. I thought that the idea of a person being able to discern truth from lies was a pretty interesting plot and I liked the characters on the whole, but the story lacked some background information that would have elevated it from a 3* star to a 4* or 5* star. There was almost no world building so you are kind of left to fill in the blanks as the story developed. Not much was given in way of background on the MC's and I really would have liked more details into the trauma Jamison had suffered in the past and a little more information about Harland. The ending was kind of rushed and the epilogue didn't really round out the story for me. I was left with more questions than before. Not this author's best work. Some of her others have been much better!
No angst Vampire + Psychic Forced Proximity Supernatural Agency Dual third person pov
I wasn't sure I'd like Jameson at the beginning but I quickly changed my mind. Harland was surprisingly sweet under that deadly "explosives are beautiful" vampire exterior. I also liked that the plot rested on something other than Jameson needing rescuing. Don't get me wrong, he needed rescuing more than once, but at the same time Harland needed Jameson, too. There were some plot holes but nothing bothersome, and Frank genuinely cared about Jameson which was nice.
Holly has done it again!! Written a cute, snarky story that will keep readers guessing who the villians is?!! This book has a plot filled with: intrigue, fast paced, sexy scenes, and just really a great fantastic read. Jameson and Harland's journey is anything but boring… one is human..one is a vampire..need I say more😲😵 If I wasn't laughing, I was having "OH @$#€" moments…😅🤦 Loved the book!!
I received this as an ARC and voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Holly does her thing: another fast-paced engaging story that could be expanded but works in a shorter format too. There's danger, romance, and humour in an easily devoured format.
I loved this story. All of the different things happening in this story really got and kept me reading more. I really enjoyed the vampire and psychic’s connection and how their love grew through this story. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves vampire romance and mm romance too.
This was a good little read. It was a little on the short side for my tastes, but the characters were written well and it was easy to follow. It certainly got me hooked with a great plot and storyline which made me want to finish reading.
