I got a free copy of this book through smashwords.
Thanks Karen and Rachel!

My reaction reading the last page:
Whoa

and when I realized it was the last page:
sad

Okay, lets start with the short story...
PLOT: When I started reading this with half of my mind still sleepy... I did have a little hard time grasping what I was reading but managed to understand the next pages. I felt it was too dark, maybe because of the black and white cover. It was a bit dramatic (I thought I would dislike it), but it turned out well.

You could say the short story is a whole story, two thumbs there! (unlike some books I have read that ends with the rising action!! If you are very curious what is it. Message me up, and I'll warn you what book what was that, to save your time reading it.)

It seems to me a little dramatic, and there seems no connection with, Wiccan's or werewolves.

CHARACTERS: The short story have a little glimpse what Temperance's family is.

To be Honest, I dislike her mother here, she seems foolish here.
Temperance seems to be like a Daddy's little girl. I think I much like him than her mother.
Her brother seems the only normal in he family in the story.

and the protagonist, Temperance... She is kinda suffering an illness like her father. Which made her a bullying victim.

The copy also includes
the first four chapter of Legend Unleashed by M. Latimer-Ridley . I think it is a smart move. Because, I told myself if I would like this, I would consider buying Legend Unleashed. If you would only gonna read the short story, there would be a small chance of grabbing the next book. the short story does not really appealed to me.

So, If you are not sure buying Legend Unleashed, read this one first. But I'm pretty sure, if you love Fantasy... You would also like Legend Unleashed.

Temperance is a short story prequel to M. Latimer-Ridley's novel, Legend Unleashed, set some years beforehand, when the titular Temperance is just eight years old. It's an introduction to her and her family. Her father, Pratchett, is in and out of the local psychiatric hospital, her mother Adora is an artistic free spirit incapable of cooking, and her brother Crispin is trying desperately to untangle himself from his family and get back to university. Temperance herself is a solitary child; she 'sees' things and takes medication to try to counteract the problem, but other children mostly consider her a freak. Between their bullying and parental gossip about the family, Temperance isn't having a happy time of it.

Following on from the short story were the first few chapters of Legend Unleashed. We learn there's something nasty lurking underneath the town and get some rather scary and at times hilarious descriptions of Adora's winter solstice celebrations. Pratchett is trying to set his daughter up with a handsome new arrival in the area, Alastair, the nephew of one of his friends, and the whole extract ends on a horror-bag of a cliffhanger. Darn it, now I'm going to have to get ahold of and read the rest of it!

The writing is excellent, there's a lot of great humour and some deliciously dark moments in what I've read so far, and I think this is a wonderful introduction to the authors' longer novel. The short story and sample chapters aren't a long read—I settled in with tea and biscuits for company and read all of it in a couple of short reading sessions. Delightful!

I received the e-book edition of Temperance as a freebie, as a consolation prize after failing to win the Goodreads giveaway of the main novel—my thanks to the authors!

This short story has some moments of exquisite prose, reminding me in style – if not in content – of the works of Gail Carriger.

Set 14 years before Legend Unleashed, this short story tells of a formative moment in the life of Temperance Levinthal. With her father just committed to an asylum and her brother refusing to sacrifice his dream of university and a life, eight-year-old Temperance must handle alone both the mental collapse of her mother and the negative reactions of her schoolmates.

Although it is very short, the main characters are all developed enough to have distinct personalities and to evoke sympathy. Temperance’s struggle to deal with the gossip and stigma around her father’s mental state seemed particularly realistic. The background description is similarly well expanded.

The revelation to Temperance of a world of magic beyond this one was an excellent piece of understated and plausible storytelling. However this element was not followed up in any way, leaving me unsatisfied. I have not read Legend Unleashed but suspect it is resolved there.

My copy also included a preview of Legend Unleashed of generous length; I did not read this as I dislike intensely being unable to finish a book.

Overall I enjoyed this work on a technical level but was left unsatisfied by the plot. It reads more like a prequel than a stand-alone work so I would recommend reading it after Legend Unleashed.

I received a free copy of this story.

11/08 - Temperance, the character and book itself, has completely drawn me in. I understand exactly what Temperance is going through with the kids at school. My experiences had nothing to do with the taint of mental disease, but I was excluded by the majority of the class throughout my school years and into tertiary education. I would attempt to join a group of classmates, in the classroom or out in the playground, and they would get up and leave when they saw me coming. That behaviour has coloured my life ever since. So when I read about that happening to someone else, even a fictional character, I tear up a little. I just want to shake the kids, and even more so the adults, until their heads rattle and their attitudes change.

I was surprised when I got to the end, it didn't feel like an ending, I felt like we should have heard more from 8-year-old Temperance than we did.

I received this book as a free e-copy through Smashwords (thanks to the authors). I found it an okay read, but I never really got sucked into the world completely. It took a while to establish story and characters, which is fine in a novel, but not so good in a short story. I was only just starting to get interested when it finished.

This is a prequel to a longer work, but since it is set so many years before, I wasn't sure of the point of it - although perhaps that will become clear if I read the main story.

If I come across the main story, I'll probably give it a try, but I won't be rushing out to buy it straight away.

I loved reading about Temperence when she was a child and all the things she had to deal with. It was strange reading about her brother since he is not a part of Legend Unleashed. I still find her father adorable an incredibly endearing character. I was sort of hoping his little spider friend would be in this novella. ;) But, no matter. a Cute, short, read that takes place years prior to the events from Legend Unleashed.

I really liked this book. I loved all the characters. The author did an amazing job writing this short story.
The Author said that they were the same as in the book, Legend Unleashed, this short story only makes me want to read it. I look forward to reading Legend Unleashed to learn more about the characters in Temperance.
