Running the register at a comic shop, waiting tables at a restaurant... this wasn't quite what Jennie had in mind after graduating with a shiny degree in Sequential Art(though it may have been what was in everyone else's). As life overwhelmed her and her drawing hand withered away, Jennie made a promise to herself to stay in practice by drawing a new comic every single day.

This first volume is a compilation of those comics. From dating and clubbing to trying to make it as an artist, follow along as Jennie chronicles her daily struggles, sorrows, joys and WTFs in life.

Jennie Breeden is the creator of the autobiographical webcomic The Devil's Panties. She has a BFA in Sequential Art from Savannah College of Art and Design.

Ms. Breeden has been updating her comic daily since 2001 with over 3,000 comic strips online and multiple graphic novels that are in comic shops and book stores around the world.

Via the comic she documents her adventures at comic conventions and in life. From pirates to taxes, kilt blowing to real estate and knitting to romance, life always seems to have something new in store: sometimes to the chagrin of Jennie, but always to the delight of her fans.

This was a lot of fun! I met the author at GenCon a couple of years ago and picked up volumes 1 and 2. Of course, being me, and having a wide array of books on my shelves already, I hadn't had a chance to check it out til now.

I really liked it. It's humorous, feminist, and still a tad offensive. I really liked reading about all of the characters adventures, namely into the world of fetish clubs and shitty jobs. And I nodded in complete understanding of Jen's absolute hatred of malls.

She and her roommates (Beth and DJ) work because despite their differences, they've got a lot of similar quirks. They have a fantastic bond formed and their friendship was just a breath of fresh air. I'm not usually one for contemporary stories, but they're sometimes fun to escape into.

I really dug the art style, though I have a feeling that the web comic itself is color even though this was black and white. It didn't take away from anything to me, but the author mentioned that the MC has red hair, and I was just like - cool cool?

A fun collection from Jennie Breeden's web comic of the same name (thedevilspanties.com). I got hooked at a recent convention by reading this volume over the shoulder of the guy in the booth next to mine (then of course I had to run down to Jennie's stand and buy one).

Lots of comic strips are autobiographical, but none more so than this one (which actually has several pages of footnotes at the end pointing out which bits are real and which are made up). The author's alter-ego is a diminutive, fetish/goth, comics-loving firecracker with flaming boots and an attitude like the Incredible Hulk. The humor and art are a little rough around the edges, but that just adds to the book's alternative indie-girl vibe.

The Devil's Panties is a slice-of-life comic strip featuring author Jennie Breeden and her friends as they go clubbing, go to comic conventions, work, eat chocolate, etc. There are also occasional strips starring Jesus and/or the devil, and the odd one-off that doesn't have anything to do with anything else.

Here and there are a few single-panel cartoons depicting a character saying something inexplicable, with the caption "You had to be there." That pretty much sums up how I felt reading most of the book. It's just not that funny. You can see where it's meant to be funny, and yes, I did chuckle a few times out loud...but out of three-hundred or so pages of comics, those times were very few. I imagine the jokes are highly amusing to Jennie, her circle of friends, and maybe her family, but to anyone else...eh.

There is a considerable amount of supplemental material at the back, should you find that you just can't get enough.

I didn't care for this type of book. I believe it is more appropriate for an early 20s age group.

As advertised, this is NOT satanic porn. What it is, is a cheeky, silly, fun, accurate comic strip collection compiled in a huge ass volume. The best indicator to know if you'll like this or not is to browse the first couple of pages. It might have variety but Jennie's humor and style are consistent throughout. It's very honest and sweet at times, but very real and I think that was very refreshing.

As a volume, I think it has a LOT of bang for its buck, with about 280 pages of comic strips, photo references for certain scenes that appear, some doodle games (spot the difference, word puzzles, mazes, etc.) and a super in depth liner note section about different strips that might need a bit more information.

Jennie's art style is a lot of fun and loves including little tidbits here and there so there are several panels worth a much closer look. It's light, refreshing, and a lot of fun for me. Not my typical jam, but highly enjoyable.

What a great first book. I came into this series on book 9 so I have some catching up to do before book 10 comes out (I've already got my kickstarter copy). Great commentary on the world wrapped up in fun.

I received this book for free as a Goodreads First Read. The Devil's Panties is witty & insightful. The semi-autobiographical angle allows for the reader to easily relate to the Jen character. In truth, she is the every-woman, geek girl in all of us. Many of her adventures feel like old war stories passed around a kitchen table surrounded by old friends with their alcoholic beverages of choice.

The art in some instances is a touch rough, but that adds to the overall relatability of the stories. (There are many more polished artists out there that lack the accessibility that Breeden brings to her craft.)

The character & photo reference pages allow the reader to see how things come together. My only criticism is that the games & footnotes at the end of the book feel unnecessarily like filler.

If the Breeden's entire series is anything like this volume, I'd definitely check it out. The book is smart, carefree & alive.

Rating: 4/5 labryses.

Sometimes offensive, sometimes crude, but almost always hilarious I enjoy “The Devil’s Panties” webcomic and books. The semi-autobiographical nature makes it easy for the reader to relate to Jen and bring out the geek in all of us. When reading the comics, I feel like I’m listening to an old friend recounting the ridiculousness of previous years.

Warning: Some political commentary and may offend your parents. Sorry mom and dad!

Who should read it? Comic fans and anyone interested in trying something new!

I received this book through First Reads.

I'm not gonna lie, I had never heard of The Devil's Panties before.
I read the whole thing in one sitting and will likely get the rest of the volumes.
The characters were funny and I liked Jen's family a lot.
And I laughed for a solid minute at the strip on how to do "Little Brown Squirrel".
Loved it!
The footnotes at the end that explain the real life examples were pretty awesome, too.
And I also have a cat named Pixel, so there's that.

Hilarious! I really enjoyed this compilation of her work and I cannot wait to buy and read more. Quirky and weird, this only slightly exaggerated depiction of of nerds, cons and fetish clubs (not satanic porn, she swears) is a great read.

This webcomic collection was brilliantly hilarious. I immediately moved on to volume 2. If you love hilarious, edgy humor with smart, feisty, female lead characters then do yourself a favor and check this out. You can get volume 1 free on Google Play, by the way.

Did anyone else have a weird printing error in their copy? Mine had all the page 70s and 80s the same.

Plus the ISBN on my copy seems to link to some random financial book on here?

These were a hoot to read! Will probably be picking up the next volumes. Again, love the fact that she is a fan of Xena, Buffy, and Terry Moore. I clearly need to hang out with this person!

These comics are hilarious. Either I've had moments like this or personally know someone who has. I also loved the games and back stories at the end.
