Good finish to the Blood Runners series by Rhyannon Byrd. Hot, scrumptious, Alpha males and the women who pseudo-tame them!

Brody carried his scars on his face and body. Michaela carried hers inside. They were both afraid of opening themselves up to possible rejection.

Brody didn't know what it was about her...but damn, she smelled good! Unfortunately for him, now he had to tell her that the brother she knew was gone. He'd been attacked by a Rogue werewolf and would turn or die tomorrow night.

Michaela's only family is her brother. She'll do whatever she needs to protect him. Unfortunately, she can't protect him from this. And the shadowy Lycan trying to take over the pack is now targeting HER. The Blood Runner that volunteers to protect her is none other than the one who makes her hot and bothered...Brody.

Hot, hot, hot. If you like a sexy take on beauty and the beast, RUN get this one!!

Honestly, there is nothing better than a scarred, damaged alpha hero, and watching him realise that love exists for him too.

Michaela was an AMAZING heroine, and I just loved how she never gave up on Brody, not matter how hard he was fighting the feelings he had for her.

I really loved this book. You have to read it.

There was nothing simple about what Brody Carter had to do...

With any other woman, it would be. But not with Michaela Doucet. He barely knew the provocative Cajun, but already her beautiful face haunted his dreams. True, women like Michaela never took an interest in guys like him--ones who were scared and bitter enough not to care what the world thought about them. But that had no bearing now that he had to protect Michaela from the Lycans who wanted her dead. Even if this decision would change his entire life. Even if it was pure madness.

Brody had no other choice. He never had....

Brody and Michaela(Torrance's bff)-main characters in this dang awesome fantastic book!!!!!

Micheala's brother Max got into some trouble downtown and was attacked by a rogue and bitten, hence him turning into a were. and with Michaela going out of control, someone has to watch her and keep her calm, and Brody volenteered for the job. Brody believes that he doesnt deserve michaela because she;s too beautiful for him, and that she would never ever look twice at a guy like him....as for micheala's perspective, she thinks Brody's sexy, sweet, and is in pain deep down in his heart. Hearing and seeing a vision of Brody's younger days and family members tells her alot of why Brody is who he is today.
After a sexual scene involving brody and Michaela, michaela went to bed...to have a dream of the fuiture, where she was sitting down outside with Brody next to her, and brody was holding something, Brody was holding a cute little baby girl that had eyes just like his, and the three of them shared love as a family with each other.
This book has it all, love, regret, romance, jelousy, betrayal(by none other than Dylan, the League whom all blood runners trusted).

In the end Michaela saved brody's life by putting herself between him and drake and getting the hit herself that almost killed her, while dylan finally admits that hes the one that has been doing all the killings, and later on dylan and drake fought, and they both ended up dying. The pack and the bloodrunners will start a new er-a, where they would try to get along with each other and everyone gets a happy ending. I also assume that in the future michaela and brody will have a child of their own...a beautiful baby girl.
I wished i could read a book about Cian and his mate, but i have a feeling that this is the last book in this series....

Great characters! Great conflict, not overplayed.

Update: 2013 - I am off to re-read this series this summer, because I need a "Wolf" fix!

Last Wolf Watching by Rhyannon Byrd is the third installment in her "Bloodrunners" trilogy. Main characters are Lycan Brody Carter and human woman Michaela Doucet.

When Michaela's brother, Max, is attacked by a Rogue wolf, he is drawn into the world of Lycans and so is Michaela. Brody volunteers to protect Michaela while the Bloodrunners try to uncover the enemy in their midst. The enemy is growing bolder, and humans are being murdered. Brody can't help but be attracted to the beautiful Michaela, but what would she want with a scarred and damaged wolf like him? For her part, Michaela finds Brody compelling, but he continues to keep her at arm's length. What will it take to break through his walls and get him to see they were meant for one another?

I loathed the first book I read in this series, somehow missed reading the second, and despised this one. These two are so utterly insipid they should have been chained together and punted into an active volcano. Followed by the author. So much of the book's narrative was consumed with each of them angsting about how much they lust after the other but won't just admit to it. It grew tedious, frankly. Brody wants her but he doesn't want to want her, yet the only way he can protect her is if she moves into his cabin with him? You know, the one with only a single bedroom? Oh my gawd. Brody has had several one-offs in his life, yet he's consumed with jealous rage when Michaela's ex-boyfriend shows up to give her grief. Like she was supposed to take a vow of chastity until they met or something. How about writing some female characters who can take care of themselves, Ms Byrd? Must all of her female characters be subjected to sexual abuse so the he-man can save the day? That's not romantic, it's sickening. Apparently the male leads must all be brooding assholes who can't accept love, for fear of it making them weak. As in the first book, the initial sexual encounter between characters consisted of him giving her a mind-blowing climax but backing off before he got off. Um, I think most of us know that if only one person in a male/female hook-up gets cookies, 99.9% of the time, it's the guy. The story was also frustrating because we all knew who the bad guy was, but none of the Elders or whatever would believe the Runners without proof, even as he stood there in public and taunted them. Reading this was beyond aggravating.

This book was awful and misogynistic, and I'm relieved I got through it without throwing up in my mouth. One star and one lip curled in disgust.

Setting: Maryland forest – mountain top Shadow Peak – where the Silvercrest (purebreds) call home – her family house, his family house, the streets of the town, a barn off the beaten path; Bloodrunner Alley – foot hill mountain, where the Runners (halfbreeds) call home – his real home, ;

Theme: worthiness; nature/passion overwhelming; love; acceptance;

Characters:
Brody Carter: when 8, his mother had an affair with a mated Lycan male… whose wife demanded action by the pack…mother to be punished, and he rushed to help his mother… so he was punished, and each member of the wife’s family was allowed to give him a single lash with their claws…and one pulled him up by his hair, and slashed his face… he still has the scars; when parents died, he was raised by a grandmother, who acted coldly toward him, wanting to ‘freeze’ his passions – but it worked too well – he feels underdeserving; he has been celibate for a year, because doesn’t like the lack of commitment and growing primal feelings… but between celibacy and his lifemate, his libido is out of control; he steps in to be her bodyguard, after her brother is turned… and she is pregnant.

Michaela Doucet: human; friend of Torrance; supernatural bookstore; being protected by the Runners, as is possibly a target of the bad weres; can read people’s emotions (though not Brody) and some of their thoughts; when brother turned, Brody was the one to break the news to her, and she went to his Novitiate Ceremony and exploded when he was mistreated… and Brody held her back, to protect her; She is doing her best to understand him, to give him space, to be open to him… ; has sensed the murderer of the women is conflicted – sorry to kill,

Max Doucet: under Runner protection, but was attacked and slashed by Dustin Sheffield – and turned were at the next full moon, Novitiate Ceremony where had first change, and had to prove strong enough to live through it, strong enough to control it… though mistreated by some of the Elders, others stood up for him, and he goes with Eric for training… doing well enough under the circumstances;

Jeremy Burns and Jillian / Torrance Watson & Mason Dillinger: happily married; trying to figure out what is happening and how to stop it

League of Elders – Silvercrest governing body;

Dylan Riggs: youngest Silvercrest Elder and friend to the Runners; under stress… in the end, via his stopping Michaela in the woods; he confesses – she senses – that he murdered the women… had a fiancé a year earlier who could not accept his wereness, and in anger he killed her… and keeps killing other women who remind him of them… The elder found out his secret, and blackmailed him to aid him… to join powers to force other weres to do his bidding; he tries to stop Stefan by deserting him (but too late)… returns when fighting had begun, and he kills Stefan, but dies himself – dying in Mason’s arms, having done the right thing;

Eric Drake: Bad elder’s son; takes on the training of Max Doucet – against his father’s command; he had found his center, and steps up after the bloodshed, to lead the remaining weres into a semi democracy;

Stefan Drake: hates humans, wants were supremacy, in the end he engineered calling the Runners into town, and he had controlled certain weres to go to council of Elder meetings and killed them… but Michaela had warned the Runners, and they were prepared…

Abigail Carter: Brody’s grandmother; sorry now for how she raised him, can see she overcompensated.

Dustin Sheffield: Cooper’s son; cocky; leader of the young male Lycans; borderline rogue; admits he turned Max, but no hard evidence; gets away during the battle; harasses Brody and Michaela, threatening them, looking for a way to get to Michaela;

Pippa Stanton: elderly Elder; killed by Stefan/Sheffield for meeting with the Runners; lock of hair nailed to Brody’s door;

Summary:
this time they stop the aggressive Elders – kill the head guy… and start a new governmental system for the weres…

1st book – they were strangers, she human, he were - lifemates… and they finally got together… 2nd book – they both weres, knew they were lifemates, but avoided one another for 10 years (mostly immaturity and lack of trust in the other’s love) and finally got together… 3rd book, she human, he were – they are lifemates, but he feels unworthy… and it takes her love to overcome that.

Brody doing all he can to control himself… and giving Michaela mixed messages… they share a hot kiss… they have sex (interrupted when she gets snagged in one of his memories)… he feels impulse to bite, she excited by the thought… but he won’t… until the end… and then he finally trusts her and her emotions, to be himself… ahhh

Memorable scenes:
“…the nearly silent words lost in the gusting Maryland breeze, theheavy chill of autumn wrapping its arms around his shoulders like a coldhearted lover.”

“Raised in the superstition-rich environment of the Louisiana Bayou, she’d grown up on whispered tales of ghosts and goblins, vampires and werewolves.”

“Stunned by her passionate defense of him, Brody swallowed the heavy lump of emotion in his throat. He had the strangest sensation of warmth in his chest, like something cracking open, spilling inside of him – but at the same time, an uneasy feeling curled around the backs of his ears, solidifying as he heard the asshole snarl, ‘You’ll be sorry for this.”

“… he was tormented by the terrifying discovery he’d made last night: the fact that Michaela doucet was his lifemate.”

“With an ear-piercing cry of joy that spilled into the room like a colorful swarm of butterflies, Michaela rushed past him the second she set eyes on Max, running across the hardwood floor and hurtling herself into her brother’s arms.”

“The only thing he could think of that would be worse than bonding himself to a woman who didn’t love him, was seeing the look in her eyes when it was over…when he’d lost his control and claimed her with all the raw, carnal sexuality of the wolf that lived within him, its power over him growing stronger the longer he went without sex.”

“I was tough on him, I know. But after what happened to my son, I wanted to make Brody strong. Make him hard enough to stand on his own.” “And did you also set out to teach him that he wasn’t worthy of love?” “… An unfortunate consequence that I hadn’t planned on…”

“I’ll be the last wolf watching you, Doucet, Brody growled the possessive words within the safety of him mind, painfully aware that he’d never be able to say them out loud.”

AS MUCH AS I ENJOY IT WHEN THE HERO DENIES HIMSELF THE HEROINE THUS THE ANGST....THIS ONE PUSHED IT A LITTLE TOO FAR THAT IT BECAME UNNECESSARILY PROLONGED.

OUR HERO is attracted to the heroine. Period. Deep down in his subconscious state of mind, he may already know that she's his mate but refuses to acknowledge it. When he's responsible to relay the news of her brother's human "death" to her, somehow his life becomes entangled with hers. During the shifting ceremony of Max, her brother turned werewolf, she was deemed unstable and he volunteered to be her keeper. From there on it's just a losing battle for him who is trying to deny their attraction while someone out there is responsible for the killings and who has painted a target on our heroine's back. He may have sworn to do his duty to keep her safe but can he truly ignore the feelings that grow within him?

OUR HEROINE is a beautiful Cajun whose looks always make people underestimate her and regard her to a dark equivalent of a dumb blonde Barbie. When her brother is turned into a werewolf, she's worried for him and this thrusts both siblings into a world they were once just onlookers but now they are pulled into a midst of political friction within the pack. While the heroine is attracted to our hero, she's also eager to get to know him but the stubborn man constantly rejects her.

OVERALL now that I am writing this, the story wasnt that intriguing or captivating. The plot was just okay, and the chemistry while good, didn't quite reach a smouldering level that leaves you satisfied.

This is for the audible edition. I couldn't find it in the list of editions.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. The first book good but the second book was disappointing so I had no idea going into this one what it would look like. The combination of Brody and Micaela based on earlier books was a win-win for me. I adored both of their character introductions in the fist book.

The book starts off with a bang dealing with Micaela’s brother getting bitten. And I was invested right off the bat as it seemed this was going to be climax to the story arc started in “Last Wolf Standing.” It was great to see the book was that and confirmed my theories on everything related to the pack and the bloodrunners. I liked learning more about Brody’s history with the pack and seeing him accept himself and become more of a leader in the story. I was not happy with Mason’s denial of everything and how he sometimes treated Brody.

Where the book lost me was, they turned Micaela into a clone of Torrance from the first book. Micaela was a very strong woman, and the author made her the standard damsel in distress full of fear and screams. It was such a drastic change in character that even the narrator sometimes changed Micaela’s voice to sound more like Torrance. It took a lot from the book.

We know Michaela from the other books. So we all know how hard headed she is. Brody is highly attractive to Michaela but fights it every step of the way. When the rogue werewolves start coming after Michaela Brody will protect her with his life.
This is the last book in the series and it brings everything together and to an end. Great book.

One of my all time favourite Mills and Boon titles. I absolutely adore Brody. I read this book when I was younger and it's stuck with me until this day. I love the blood runners series in general, but Brody is my favourite!

Wish I could give more stars.

I’m going to take Brody and lock him up in my closet. He just oozes sex and held me captive throughout the book. Seriously, he needs to come with a warning.

Caution: May cause swooning, loss of speech, and the irresistible urge to lay down and be taken.

Ok, now that that is out of my system…

For those of you who haven’t heard of this series, I can give a general consensus. It is about a group of werewolves known as Blood Runners. They are the offspring of wolf and human matings, impure in the packs’ eyes. In order to ‘earn’ their citizenship in the pack, they must make a certain number of ‘Blood Runs’, the hunting and killing of rogue werewolves. Of course, they like their lives just fine…and so do I.

Brody has to be my favorite runner out of the series so far. He is your typical scarred and ice-hearted man who resists his mate with everything he possess, but ultimately in true romance fashion fails and falls head over heels for her instead. Instead of his scars being emotional ones, they are gruesome physical ones—from a nasty childhood incident--that mar his body and in turn have affected his view of himself as a man. He sees himself strictly as a warrior with nothing but protecting the pack in his life. He doesn’t believe a woman would be interested in him beyond a quick roll in the sack because of his scars, and thinks his ‘fearsome’ image gets off the women he sleeps with. He’s completely content with his life tracking down rogues and killing them to protect his pact and humanity, until Michaela comes into his life.

Michaela has known about the pack since her best friend got married to one. However, when this book begins, she is worried sick. Her brother got caught up in some werewolf activity that has begun to change his life and hers forever. With the support of the runners and their mates, she tries to defend her brother. But the pack council deems her knowledge of them a threat, and therefore they demand she have a bodyguard to keep her in check. Brody, unable to resist, steps up and takes the job. Where Brody’s scars are on the outside, Michaela’s are on the inside. Because of this, she understands Brody better than he realizes. The more time she spends with him, the more she realizes how alone he really is. So she decides to put her heart on the line, knowing that it wasn’t going to be easy, and fight for the scarred and emotionally blocked runner.

Their relationship was HOT. Brody is the perfect example of hidden passion, loyalty, and good old fashion human nature. He tried to protect himself, tried to do what was in Michaela’s best interest. But his wolf had other ideas, wanting her for his own, driving him mad with need and want and the instinctive urge to make a bond with her. That is what scared him the most. His realization that she was his life mate scared him so much that he did his worst to keep her away. But Michaela was smarter than that. She knew what he was trying to do, and for everything he did, she came back with a tactic of her own, slowly chipping away his resolve. She was open and coaxing and understanding, and her love and care eventually wore him down. When they came together, even their tiny moments leading up to it, were hot and passionate and full of lust. It was like an explosion of the most primal kind coming together and making the world right again. There were times she got hurt and annoyed with him, but with a little help from the rest of the runners and their mates, they came together in a deep love that happily-ever-afters are made of.

This was by far my favorite book in the series, especially with the climatic ending and shocking discovery. Brody was the perfect passionate scarred wolf. Michaela was the perfect complement to him. The runners and their mates were fantastic. It was a story that left me more than satisfied. Another knock out book by Rhyannon Byrd and definitely a keeper.

This may be the 'Last Wolf' in the trilogy but keep Watching for more Wolves from Byrd

In Last Wolf Watching, werewolf Brody sees himself as the 'Beast' to the lovely Cajun psychic Michaela's 'Beauty'. But as Michaela soon discovers, the scars on Brody's skin are nothing compared to the one's that Brody carries on his heart and soul.

One thing that Byrd does really well in this series is that each romance is original, each wolf pursuing his mate has different issues and Byrd doesn't automatically have the mate bond solve all of the pair's problems.

In this story Brody has given up on women, because they either treat him with horrified revulsion or seek him out as a dangerous thrill. And even though Brody is drawn by the mate bond to Michaela, he can't believe she could actually feel more than pity for him. Brody fights the attraction, pushing Michaela away every time she tries to pursue what's between them. While I know the purpose of this is to build the tension between the pair, I was a bit frustrated with Michaela after awhile. She starts out as a strong fearless stubborn women, but she continues to try to give herself fully to Brody in spite of his continued rejections. I guess the pull of the mate bound was powerful stuff, enough to overwhelm her self esteem but after a while it made me want to send her to a good therapist.

As a backdrop to Michaela and Brody's mating 'polka' (one step forward two steps back), Byrd ties off the overall plot carried through the series by resolving the rogue werewolf serial killer mystery and uncovering the traitors seeking to lead the were's into a new age of annihilating humans.

I have to admit the resolution was the reason I dropped my rating 1/2 a star -- I was a little disappointed that Byrd's 'twist' closed off the possibility that one intriguing character from the previous books will not get a story of his own in one of the future Blood Runner books that Byrd has planned. Hopefully, my two remaining favorites will be the ones to meet their mates next, because overall I enjoyed this series and am looking forward to reading more of Byrd's shifter romances.

Scarred, emotionally and physically, Brody Carter, Blood Runner, has been barely holding it all together since Mason's wedding to Tori. Also known as: The day that damn Cajun came into his life.

When her best friend is married and then her brother is attacked, Michaela Doucet is forced into the world of the paranormal. A world she always believed in. But never saw herself in.

When her brother passes the first werewolf ceremony (transforming into a werewolf two nights after he has been attacked and does not die from it), Michaela's life does not get any easier. If her brother is not accepted into the pack as a full member, both he and Michaela will be killed as damage control (to keep the secret of the pack's existance from the public).

Someone has to protect Michaela from all the evil and murder going down at the hands of an insane elder, Drake. Dark and brooding, Brody needs the light Michaela proves and Michaela needs ... Brody.

Can they both save the pack?

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! Hah! The blonde killer..oh yeah.
But I guess it's not that good for the plot when a reader could sense it in the first book?

This book was way better than the previous one. But what ruins it a bit for me is that the endings are way to romantic. I'm not even putting a spoiler alert on that one, you all know it's a HEA book ladies! I really don'y like it when somene as über alpha as a werewolf turns into a 6 foot tall furry ball filled with romance and unicorn glitter.

However, I know there books are supposed to be romantic and I shouldn't have expected more action than love. My bad.

Also, again: What's up with the first name & last name shift?

It's a 3,5 stars book for me. Brody is hot so I should round it up to 4. But because of all the fluffball lovey dovey BS I give 3.

Dark, damaged, repressed hero who is now committed to keeping the heroine safe--a Cajun lady who has some paranormal powers as yet undeveloped. Her beauty attracts him and yet he fears himself and his power to hurt. He must keep her safe from a racist elder of the local pack who is out to build a rogue werewolf army to hunt humans for food and destroy all weres who are not pure. (Hitler lives!) Anyway, it is a very well-written novel--Ms Byrd is certainly an experienced writer and has proven her ability and talent as a story-teller. It held my interest from start to finish, but sometimes I wish the main characters could just get over the mad stuff and find a way to develop a relationship in just a bit more friendly ways. Gets old after a while.

This third book in the Bloodrunner series is better than the previous two but still I have my hangups. It seemed to me the whole series was about Werewolves with angst. I have a really hard time believing so many grown men are still holding onto mommy & daddy issues as well as woe is me I am a "monster" issues. If your parent is a were as well, where do these ideas come from? I like Michaela a lot, I met her in the first novel and I still love her no nonsense, back talking. She is just pushing enough to be fun. Again these books are all quick reads so I would suggest forming your own opinions and giving them a read.

I have recently learned there are two more books added to this series, so I guess I am not finished yet.

Brody Carter is a Bloodrunner with tortured past. He bears mental and physical scars from his past and they keep him from having a real relationship with anyone. Unfortunately as soon as he meets Michaela he knows she is his destined mate. Now not only does he have to protect her from rogue wolves and a killer who is looming about but he also has to protect himself from falling in love with her.

This book had a little bit of a Beauty and the Beast feel to it (he is too scarred and messed up for the beautiful girl). Along with a really good conclusion to the rogue wolves and murderer arc, The Last Wolf Standing is my favorite book in this series so far!

Whose Next

I'm a fan of the Bloodrunners, half human and half lycan breed, who fight against rogue factions to protect their way of life. Last Wolf Watching is book number three featuring the Bloodrunner Brody Carter and Michaela Doucet. Doucet wages a fight of her own to win Brody's affection. Bloodrunner books are fast paced and easy to read with an interesting mixture of mystery and romance. i like the familiarity of the characters who present from book to book. At the end, there is a clear picture of whose story is rearing to be told.

I really loved this story. One man thinks he will never be good enough and one woman wants nothing more than to simply show him how worthy he is. Surround that with danger and mysterious murders, where the hearts are eaten out of the female victims, a sexual tension that is just begging to be satisfied, and danger lurking around every dam corner. I really couldn't put it down. I just wanted to kick Brody in his ass and tell him to open his res to love that was throwing it's self at his feet. Thank God he got his act together! LOVED IT!

A good, fast paced easy read that continues the world of the Bloodrunners. I enjoyed reading about Brody and Micheala, although sometimes they just seemed too caught up in their own pity parties to really be belieavable. I did like however that Michaela did not give up on Brody, that she kept making the moves when he tried to deny their attraction for each other.

Well again im am dissapointed in originality of the mated pair. i feel as if im reading the first book over again with a continuation of the story line. As i like the character development and the story i am dissapointed that the mated pair take so long to act on their desire. a let down for me.
