For P.J. Stone, being a “Seer” who has never seen anything is less than fun. And P.J. isn’t known for her patience.

To make matters worse, she must choose a suitable mate to continue the Seer bloodline. Duty always comes before her heart…at least that’s what her parents taught her. When she finds herself wanting someone who is considered off-limits, P.J. is forced to question everything she believes.

As if navigating her love life isn’t complicated enough, P.J. finally receives a vision—of a threat to her world that only she can perceive. But no one will believe a fledgling Seer’s warnings. With nowhere else to turn, she may decide to trust a stranger with her life, her world, and maybe even her heart.

If you've read my review for Enemy Through The Gates you will notice that this one is about the same. That would be because this is newly polished publish version of Enemy Through the Gates. Not a whole lot was changed but there were some edits to it that made the story flow smoother than the original.

Let me just start out by saying that when going into this book, I thought it was a YA book. I read the synopsis about an 18yr old girl looking for the perfect boyfriend and then finding out that she is in love with her best friend but they are forbidden to be together, and for some reason my brain computed a YA. Let me just say that this is not YA or it's a very adult like YA. There is quite a bit of sex in this book, swearing and there is even under aged drinking. Now, I'm not saying that this doesn't all happen with teens these days especially an 18 year old but you just don't see it that much in YA novels. I would call this more New Adult or Paranormal Romance. So just be prepared that even though this is a story containing an 18 year old, it isn't YA fluff.

I loved the way the book begins with P.J. and her best friend Bryn at school ribbing on each other. They appear to be normal teens but in all actuality, P.J. is a Seer who has premonitions, and Bryn is a Guardian who protects Seers. They have grown up doing everything together and one day Bryn will be P.J's Guardian. Only, one night at a party P.J. realizes her feelings for Bryn are more than just that of a friend and finds out that Bryn has been in love with her for a long time. They decide to hide their relationship since it is forbidden for guardians and seer's to become involved but all good things must come to an end and they are caught red handed getting hot and heavy in the woods by none other than her father.

You would think that the story would just be about forbidden love and the majority of it is. Except Bryn gets shipped away and P.J. starts having some crazy premonitions that no one seems to believe are real. Not to mention that a guy named Khol comes into the picture and drops a pretty big drama bomb on P.J. (Sorry, no spoilers) So not only does P.J. have to come to terms with her new found identity and not having Bryn but she also has to figure out how to stop these alien things from over taking the world.

I loved the term "Aram Cara", which means soul mate. I must admit that I hate the term "soul-mate" and it seems that authors are way too quick to throw that in their story. I was happy that the author came up with a term that fit PJ's world perfectly while still conveying that once bonded, there was no going back.

A lot goes on in this book and with being the first in a trilogy, stuff goes unanswered. So it pretty much sets you up for the next two books and I personally cannot wait to read more. D.T. has a great way of creating a story that keeps the readers interested without losing focus. I personally loved the romance aspect since I am a big romance junkie myself. But I loved the craziness when it comes to not only the aliens but what P.J actually is, and I don't mean just a Seer.

I must say that I cannot wait for book number 2 to come out.

One of the benefits and downfalls of rereading a series is knowing how it ends and this wasn't something I took into consideration when I started reading this series. Once again I fell into this story with ease, but all to quickly we reach that point in the book where PJ realises her feelings for Bryn are more than platonic friends and it was at this point that I lost control of my emotions and I broke down. I was swept up in the here and now but there was that part of my heart that knew what was coming and it reacted prematurely.

Maybe it was because I came to love Khol later in the series but this time round that man rubbed me up the right way. When I first read this I found him to be overly domineering and aggressive in his pursuit of PJ but the second time round he was softer and definitely more alluring. I wasn't prepared to banish Bryn but I definitely would have offered Khol some 'comfort' of my own.

All in, this was just as enjoyable as the first time round. One thing that did surprise me was finding out that this was the first novel Dyllin had written. When I first read this I clearly remember falling into this book with ease, the first few pages had me completely hooked and that is not something I would have expected from an authors first book.

I originally read this in November 2012. I'm in the process of rereading the entire series. This book was a hit the first time I read it and I loved it even more the second time around.

WOW!!! Just wow! I am at a loss for words. I really, truly think the author needs to leave this book as is. Stupid me initially thought it was a YA and I kept thinking "there's no fuckin way." I then realized it was New Adult and I was in love. I absolutely love the book. The characters were great and grew with the story. After reading a bit I kept thinking "Why is P.J. such a lip slut?" and "Does this girl have a golden vagina with all these dudes chasing after her?" Now I know why LOL. I had no idea the story was going to take such a huge turn like that. I am in love!! I'm also feeling like there is a hole in my heart. I'm not sad with the story. I'm sad because I want to read the next one immediately. I've been in such a reading rut and I freakin devoured this book. O.M.G.

I really don't know how I felt about this book; I had a cacophony of emotions during my read of it and can't seem to place it with a rating (right now).

What I liked about the book was obviously, the cover. You can tell it has to do with dragons just by looking at it and I love dragons. I also loved the whole concept of Seers, Gatekeepers, and Seekers; there was a really well done uniqueness to the story itself. The plot itself was greatly done, the writing well enough to keep me wanting to read (I didn't really put the book down).

But, what I didn't like about the book... (more via website)

Hidden Gates Review

**This is Not a Ya book, more like New Adult, or Adult, has many sex scenes in it.**

I really enjoyed this story a lot. I liked the world the author created, even if a bit scary at times, lol. No spoilers in this just so you know. I felt pretty dumb thinking this was a YA, It did start with them in the hall in high school, and usually books with HS kids are YA. But was I in for a huge sexual surprise, lol. I think I have read Adult books with less sex than this one, lol, but it's done in a very tasteful way, no worries, but for sure 18 and up for this one. I totally fell in love with these characters though, and that love of them just grew through the book.

I will say, that I was confused to why all of a sudden P.J. was wanted by all these guys, like she drew them too her. But then the twist comes, and I find out why, but I won't be telling you. Just read it, and wait for it, it will smack you between the eyes. I sure did not see that one coming.

I liked the magical elements to it, with P.J. Being a "seer" but I did not like the restrictions thy forced on the young adults. As its found out early, that P.J and her best friend forever Bryn, are in love, but its forbidden, as he is a "Guardian" and is to be trained to be her Guardian, as all Seer's are to have one. So that part, I just was like, its so unfair, lol. Seer's can only pair up with Gatekeepers or descendants of Seer's (all Seer's are female)

Bryn I liked a lot, in the beginning at least, and once you read the book, you will know what I mean. As some major things change and he is like a different person towards the end. He sounds so gorgeous too, with cerulean blue eyes, and black hair, tall at 6'4 . I also thought the young `Gatekeeper' was sweet, Jeremy, who P.J. was told to date by her mom, she set them up on the arranged type dates. Won't get into all that, would take forever.

I really liked the true passion that was between P.J. and Bryn, it was a love that was built up over their life, since they were 5 years old. No insta-love here, thank goodness.
Now Kohl, wow, what a sexy hunk he is. I am still torn between him and Bryn, by the end of the book, I kindof am starting to lean toward Kohl. I can't say why, as it will give too much away.

I think the character building was great, and so was the world building. The Descriptions of Kohl's place is really well done.

Here is a short teaser of that passion (its clean)

His lips met mine with an undercurrent of electricity. The kiss started out soft and sweet but began to gain momentum quickly. I gasped as his tongue slid in to deftly take control of my mouth. An unfamiliar feeling of liquid heat pooled in my middle, causing a moan to escape from me as I wrapped my arms around his shoulders in an attempt to pull him closer. It was like my body was on fire, and Bryn was the only one who could bring me relief.

And her is another steamy scene:

His hands tangled in my hair, and just like the night before, I found myself pushed up against a tree by Bryn. The way he was kissing me was different than before though, he was being more forceful, and there seemed to be an undercurrent of desperation. All my nerve endings felt like they crackled with his energy, and a wave of pure lust slammed into me. "I can't lose you. I just can't," he rumbled into my mouth.

That is just a taste of the kind of passion in this. The only problem I had with this book, is it to me had too much of the sexual stuff, and less of the great magical world, I would rather only 1 -2 sex scenes and the rest all the story. I don't really read books that are just mostly about the sex, just isn't my kind of thing, rather be pulled into a great fantasy story, this only partially does that for me, because just too much goes into the sex.

Except for that, it's a brilliant book for me. I sure was sucked into it, and read in one sitting just about, as it was hard to put down once I got started.
I don't want to say too much more. I do highly recommend this book. People who love lots of sex in their books will be satisfied with this for sure, but there is still enough of the magical fantasy world too to make the rest of us happy.

5 out of 5 stars.

I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review.

I was disappointed with this one. The blurb sounded really interesting, but nothing came together for me. The romance felt contrived, character developement was almost nonexistent, the writing didn't do much for me, and the concept/world building was flimsy.

For the first 20 pages, things were looking good. After that, it all goes down hill. I was annoyed by the fact that establishing the romance took precedence over world building. Yes, we're given a few random tidits about Guardians, Seers, and Gate Keepers, but nothing really substantial. This pretty much continues through the whole story. So, we've got this flimsy concept that doesn't make much sense and comes off as completely hokey and half done. For instance, Things like that just made it seem like no real though went into this concept.

On top of that, the romance starts off in the most inconsistent manner and during a situation where it just completely turned me off. The romance gets jump started In the aftermath of all that, PJ suddenly realizes her love for him. Sounds good, right? Except, about ten pages prior to that, she laments briefly that she didn't see Bryn that way at all and that it would be completely awkward. Hmm ....look, I'm a sucker for stories where friends become more. I just need the transition to be well written, there has to be actual development.

The other issue I had was that the characters were very flat and dramatic. There's no real character development at all. Also, I know they are in highschool, but at 18, I think the dialogue should have been more mature. PJ was channeling her inner toddler on more than one occasion. The plot felt rushed, like the initial concept needs a lot of reworking. A lot of things I didn't get or just didn't like. Overall, Hidden Gates didn't satisy me. The story felt thrown together and the characters failed to make me want to invest in the journey.

P.J. is a girl straddling two realities. The first being that of an eighteen year old high school senior, complete with crushes, parties, and pecking orders.

The second...

Well, that's just a little more complicated.

In her second reality, P.J. is a "seer". Able to see portals that lead to and from Earth from other dimensions, P.J. is part of an elite group of people charged to keep the planet safe from all manner of invasion.

Because said is passed through females within the "seer" line and those lines can only thrive through mating with male "Gatekeepers"; her newly discovered and searingly intense love for a certain beautiful and darkly gallant "Guardian" is strictly forbidden.

As if that isn't bad enough. Her vision gifts are late in coming, and when they do, she finds herself seeing things too horrifying to believe.

And...

The emergence of her gifts awakens a mysterious stranger named Khol; who claims that she is destined to be his mate and that he alone can help her defeat the threat shown to her by her visions.

This book is all about the layers

First, the Romeo and Juliet that is the first story of the read.

Couple this with the introduction of the mysterious and very powerful Khol, the emergence of P.J's powers, and the looming threat posed by the breaches at the gate and voila...Great book.

Aside from all of the afore mentioned reasons that this book stands out, there is the unexpected and very well done sexual aspect of this read.

The fact that P.J. and her Romeo "make love" early in the story sets the stage for very important and life changing discoveries for them both later.

This book is one that one you start...you MUST finish.

Can't wait for book 2!!!

I received this for free through NetGalley

Thanks so much for letting me review this - going to be picking up the next book stat!

The cover is fantastic! Loved the premise of this book and I was happy to find it really engaging and easy to read. The way the exploration of the relationship between P.J. and Bryn was weaved with the paranormal world was flawless and nothing felt misplaced. Big thumbs up for the world building - very descriptive and everyone's role was easy to follow. A great lead in to the series.

One thing I would say is that this read more to me as a new adult novel given some of the content so just be weary of that if you are looking for a strictly YA story.

I am sad to say that I had to DNF HIDDEN GATES approximately 44% in. The teenage/relationship drama was just a bit much for me. That would be ok if this was strictly a YA novel, but there is sex in the book, and not just Oh I had sex yesterday, the sex is described. Then a chapter later, she is so in love, but kissing another boy and so hot for him, and dying because her love isn't there, then kissing another boy. You get the gist.

No he podido acabar este libro.

Poor P.j. She knows she’s going to have to submit to her mother and begin Suiridhe. It’s a form of courtship, like debutantes being introduced to eligible young men at a ball.

In P.J.’s world, as a Seer, she can only marry another Seer. Parents arrange dates between them, hoping the results are a marriage to continue the bloodlines.

Problem is, P. J. loves another, someone forbidden, and she’s no way, no how, going to marry someone just because her mother says so.

On top of that, P.J. finally has a vision. She gets a glimpse of mysterious life forms slipping through the portal into her world. She feels something terrible is looming in the future, but when she tells others about her vision, they shrug her off, saying if something came through the portal, all Seers would have had the vision.

As events unfold, P.J. will have to make some hard choices. Her forbidden love, a mysterious stranger with glowing eyes, and beings from another world threaten hers.

First things first. There is one heck of a love triangle in this story. Not your typical one where the girl can’t decide which one she wants. P.J. knows who she wants but her choice is forbidden.

I can’t tell you who the guys are, but I can tell you they are all alpha’s, fine specimens, and I’m glad I’m not P.J. Each one of them has their own magnetism, drawing responses from P.J. she’s ill prepared to control.

Young hormones run rampant, keeping the sexual tension flowing without being too explicit. Boy did this bring back memories. Of course, I never had three hot guys vying for me. Jenna is P.J.’s best friend and would love to trade places with her. But even she gets fed up with the guys postering.

“No kissing and no fighting in my car? We’re on a mission here, people, and it doesn’t include a sword fight over who gets to mouth rape P.J. first!”

My favorite part of the story is the tangled relationships. The author keeps you worked up, hopping back and forth, never knowing for sure who will end up with P.J.

I had a favorite, or so I thought. Then the hot stranger with the glowing eyes had me thinking twice. And the other Seer had his own special charm.

I think I was as torn up and confused as P.J. but I could laugh about it. P.J. had to deal with it.

Character driven stories are my favorite and there are many in Hidden Gates. Each is well written with distinct voices, easy to tell apart.

There are many surprises in this first book. Lots of secrets. Some are revealed, and some continue into the next book. The author reveals just enough to satisfy you, while keeping you itching for more.

When I finished this book, I immediately began reading the next one, Broken Gates. I had to know what was going to happen next.

I gave this 5 stars because I felt compelled to keep reading long after I should have been asleep, thought about it while at work the next day, and went to bed early to finish it.

I received this book for my honest review. My opinion was not influenced in any way.

I don't like giving 1 star but the more I write this review, the more I don't like this book. This is not a YA book like I thought it would be when I read the summary but a NA. The New Adult genre is a difficult one. You have a character that's between a teenager and an adult and the author has to find the right balance. I don't believe that balance was found in this book. I had a hard time not rolling my eyes while reading this.

Forbidden love? Check! Love triangle (quadrangle)? Check! Annoying (slutty) best friend? Check! Soul maters? Check! I'm sure there are more cliches I can add in there. I don't have a problem with a lot of cliches but throw them all together and it's just painful. Things were so predictable when it came to the relationships in this book. Almost everything was predictable.

PJ is our protagonist. She's a Seer and her best friend, Bryn, is a Guardian. PJ isn't allowed to be with anyone but a Gate Keeper or a Seer descendant. No lowly Guardian for PJ. But who is PJ in love with? You guessed it, Bryn, the lowly Guardian. But we can't forget about the slutty best friend, Jenna. She's a Speaker, she can speak/read any language. She's also second-class to the beloved Gate Keepers and Seers. Don't get me wrong, I like that there are levels of power and the fact that the Gate Keepers and Seers are snooty. That makes for a interesting complication. This wasn't. We were never given a reason why Speakers and Guardians are so lowly. Hell, we aren't even told why these special humans exist! On top of that you have dragons. Yes, dragons. Oh, and "aliens" who come through the gates take over people's bodies. What's a Gate? I don't know.

Every character is flat. There isn't any depth to them. The entire plot focuses on PJ and the three love interests. Romance is basically the only plot point. There isn't any real character development. There's no real movement throughout the story. There's very little action. Everything focuses on PJ and how she loves Bryn but he's forbidden. I wanted more than that. I wanted some reason to be emotionally invested in these characters or this world but there wasn't anything for me to care about.

The plot Dyllin was trying to write just didn't come through. It needs to focus less on PJ and her love struggles and more on the end of the world plot point that was introduced at the end. Overall this book just wasn't for me.

I absolutely love it when I come across books with a brand new take on fantasy. When an author can take your mind into a whole new level of imagination, well they get my thumbs up! What author D.T. Dyllin has done here for you is opened up the world of fairy tales that you grew up with and added a sprinkle of extra magic to keep you turning the pages. She sneaks in characters and before you know it, you're in a circle of a whole new batch of friends. She drags your eyes across the pages hoping and wishing for more adventure. She writes her characters like she has known them her whole life. The connection she formed with them is pulsating from the book.
P.J., Khol, Bryn and even her best friend Jenna are a pack of friends that are spiraled into new changes. They don't have a choice but to stand up and fight for the world. The balance of evil is quickly getting upturned and guess what good is losing! Will there be enough allies to band together in time to save everything from destruction? There are hard choices to be made, new changes to deal with, discoveries that change the way P.J. views her life, but D.T. Dyllin has not made a young woman that we can all relate to. She's not a hard, strong woman yet. She's a girl finding her way. She is strong when she needs to be, weak when she has too much to handle. I can respect that. I can identify with that. She stands up for herself and she is forever fighting for her love. When everyone she's grown up with tell her it's wrong to love whom she loves...she doesn't let that stop her from fighting for what her heart wants. Is it enough for the power that quietly hums beneath her skin?
Khol. Ahhh I must touch on Khol. *sigh* I think I love him. LOL. He quietly swoops in there and before I knew it, he stole the book for me and became my absolute favorite character! Khol shows up and before you can figure out what he is or what he's about he's stolen your heart and made you a fan! I am so Team Khol it's ridiculous. He's smoldering, sexy, and arrogant...all the things I love in a man. That strong confidence teeters close to arrogance and I love it! Here's a book that will grab a hold of you and open your eyes to a new realm! Hold on tight! It's a fascinating show and D.T. Dyllin just gave you front row seats! If you love the paranormal and fantasy, destruction of earth reigning down on you and pressures of love and choices then you want to pick up this book! I give this read my thumbs up!

I read this as a beta reader and I absolutely loved it! It was such a fresh take on a paranormal fantasy for New Adults that it was like opening a Christmas present and with every corner of the wrapper that I "tore off" and got a peak at the gift inside, I got even more exited.

The characters are loveable and genuine. Dyllin does an amazing job of developing realistic characters who you love to root for. The male protag, Bryn, is to die for and our female MC, P.J., is spunky, heartfelt and fun. Dyllin provides a great, well-rounded cast of characters who interact smoothly and sometimes not so smoothly which provides for great conflict and typical (and not so typical because this is fantasy after all <3) teen/tween drama that hits the mark perfectly.

The story is fast paced and it keeps you turning the pages. It's original, which I LOVE, and there's plenty of action and romance to feast on. P.J. (the main character) has her work cut out for her and the by the end of the first book the reader is left with the stage set for plenty of action and conflict in book two. Dyllin ties up many of the questions raised and leaves us wondering how P.J. will deal with the situation she's left in. I can't wait for book two!

Dyllin is great at her dialog; witty and quite realistic. There is a lot more to writing good dialog than most people know, and she's nailed it as well as using it to help capture the age of the characters superbly.

Dyllin's writing style is original and fun, she has a solid handle on the craft and is comfortable and adept at tackling multiple plot arcs. This is a wonderful story and character driven novel for "new adults" as well as those of us in the older crowd.

Hidden Gates by D. T. Dyllin is the first in the P. J. Stone Gates Trilogy. Dyllin introduces a world where Seers, Gatekeepers, Guardians and Speakers exist unbeknownst to the “regs,” or regular humans. Seers and Gatekeepers are at the top of the food chain. Their role is to keep the Earth safe from otherworldly dangers. Since Seer children can only be born from two Seers or a Seer and a Guardian, matches between those two factions are required. Our heroine, P. J., is a high school senior and a Seer. Her best friends are a Guardian and a Speaker, not normal for Seers who typically keep to those of the same social status. P. J. realizes she is in love with a Guardian, but their parents find out and send the boy away. Two more guys, a Guardian (most acceptable to mom and dad) and a mystery man (that mom and dad don’t know about), step in to try and take his place. To add to the drama, P. J. has her first vision, and it’s a doozy. Unfortunately no one believes it really happened, but the visions keep on coming.

The book provides a fast paced race to identify the meaning of the visions, and to answer the question of which guy will win P. J.’s heart for good. I enjoyed the story, but I have to say the level of sex in a book featuring high schoolers was a bit off the charts. I’m no prude, but some of the sex was coerced, and some borderline violent. While this is explained due to the nature of the beings involved, I don’t think it was necessary at all to the story.

That being said, overall I liked the book. There were some surprises toward the end, and a good set up for the next installment. I’ll definitely give the next book in the trilogy a go.

This book was provided to me free via LibraryThing.

"You'll always be my best friend"

“Every time I’m with you, it’s like coming home”

Okay, first off, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. It was a little racier than what I am use to but I was hooked from the very beginning. It was very well written and the story captivated me at every turn of the page. From the way it ended, I hope that I am awaiting another book.

The story starts out with P.J. Stone and her best friend, Bryn, found out they both have feelings for each other. I love best friends fall in love with each other. However, P.J. and Bryn cannot be together because of what they are. P.J. is a Seer and Bryn is her guardian. Guardians and Seers are not allowed to be together.

When P.J. and Bryn's parents find out about their relationship, they send Bryn away. This, of course, devastates P.J. and brings about new consequences. These consequences are in the form of two new HOT guys, Khol and Jeremy. (I mean, come on, Who wouldn't want consequences like that?)

With Bryn out of the picture, Khol and Jeremy feel like they should be with P.J. and are really to go to extreme measures to be with her, even if she only wants to be with Bryn. However, P.J. needs all of them to help her fight the dangers that are coming to her from her visions and deal with some secrets that have been kept from her for her whole life.

When Khol brings P.J. and her friends to his lair for protection, new circumstances will cause a shake up to this story... but I can't give you too many details or it would take the surprises away.

I truly enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to everyone.

Well, I will be honest and say that once I read the blurb I was a bit wary because I am not usually into fantasy/sci-fi books. I'm more of a paranormal romance or YA kinda gal.

But from the first chapter to the last, I was intrigued. This book is pretty addicting. Although I was a little confused when the author was explaining things in the beginning, it didn't take me long to catch on. I loved the world that Dyllin creates.

Like I said, I'm not much of a fantasy reader but Dyllin took this world and tweaked it to make a wonderful idea of where I wouldn't mind being in. I liked the whole idea behind the politics and the relationships in here.

Peej was a fun character to read. She did have her moments of annoyance where, as a tpical teenager, tantrums come into play. But overall I admired her for her compassion to do the right thing and take care of those she loves.

Bryn *le sigh* is a gorgeous guy. I will admit that I fell in love with him before Peej did. ;-) He had the boy next door complex with a hint of some bad boy in him. Which is the perfect combo to me. Plus, I'm always a sucker for a tall, black haired, blue-eyed guy.

The love triangle....errr....square maybe? was pretty complex and I felt bad for poor Peej. All she wanted was to get noticed and she got her wish ten fold. Add that with all the drama of trying to save the world, well, you have a complex, intriguing wild ride.

Overall I thought the book was pretty good and I'll pick up her next book in the series because I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and this world.

HOLY SEERS!!!!!!! Okay okay I have to say a huge THANK YOU to IMR Blog Tours for allowing me to read and review this ARC and be a part of this tour. I have read a few books with seers in it and I have to say that this one had a little twist in it and I immediately started to devour this book. To say I could not stop reading it is such an understatement but I really couldn't.

PJ Stone is a Seer who has no visions. She is frustrated because her gift is not even a gift because she does not see any visions. If matters could not get worse for her she has to find a mate to create more Seers. Her father has told her she needs to start preparing for her future. As she is looking for someone she realizes she is in love with someone she is not supposed to be with. But as her feelings for him get stronger and he returns the feelings back they begin a dangerous relationship.

After getting caught with her forbidden love and he is sent away PJ feels lost and confused. Then she finally has a vision and it is on scary vision that she can't handle alone. She needs her boyfriend but he is miles away. When things start to look really bad for PJ a stranger comes in and reveals some secrets to her and her world is rocked at the core. She has to decide what to do and how to save her heart, her world, and her life. What will she do? Will she be reunited with her true love? And can she save her world?

This is a MUST READ for all paranormal lovers!

First off I just want to say Wowza and the plot thickens! I am not completely sold on Bryn and Pj 's relationship I am silently rooting in Kohls corner to be honest. OK now before I give too much away PJ is a Seeker, Bryn is her best friend and is a guardian, Jenna is her wild best friend whom I grow to love she is a speaker and Kohl..... well he is a whole lot of man... and inside PJs head. This book is amazing. When I first started to read Hidden Gates I wasn't exactly sure where the story was gonna go I was being pulled a couple different ways in my head but after I believe the fifth chapter I was hooked. So much is going on with PJ I feel sorry for the direction her life is heading. And I cannot help but to let my heart break with her in the middle but I think my heart is breaking for her at the end too even though I'm not completely sure if she's heart broken! I want to write so much but I fear giving too much away. This is one of those books where when you start it, it is almost impossible to set down with so much going on your afraid if you set the book down somethings gonna happen with out you! I hope its not too long before the next book is released I cannot wait to see what twists and turns this group of friends overcomes! And also I cannot wait for more Kohl :)

I really enjoyed this book in fact it was one of those unexpected reads. I figured it would be good, but I never thought that it would go the way it did, which was quite a pleasant surprise for my mind that's pretty good at predicting what's going to happen.
PJ is a young high school senior that struggles with her seemingly non-existent seer abilities, while realizing that she loves someone she can never have. This is only the beginning of her problems as the world around her shifts, her seer abilities come blazing to the forefront, and she's bombarded with more male attention than she thought would ever have.
This is definitely a good read for someone who is an adult romance lover looking to bridge the gap and read YA.
I highly recommend this read and hope you will all go and check it out!
I give Hidden Gates FIVE stars!
I purchased this book on Amazon.

I can't finish this book. I was immediately put off by the overwhelmingly, heavy focus on romance. Yes, the summary clearly indicates that romance would be at the forefront of this book, but it was listed as sci-fi and I was hoping the Seer's warning would lead to a bit more thrilling plot line. Part of the reason I had such a problem with the romance was that it was poorly executed and annoying. Forbidden romance with a love triangle - UGH.

The world building was poor. I had to reread a few paragraphs that explained the role of the Seers, Speakers, Guardians, and Gatekeepers and the rules of their society, and I still didn't understand. I felt like there was very little plot movement - and so I called it quits.

*I received a copy of this book for free, which in no way influenced my review.

I thought this book was a really good beginning to a trilogy. That said I thought the character building was great, the imagery was really detailed, creating a very quick mental ability to believe in everything going on.
I found all the cliche pnr/ pr/ young adult books to have clear cut good & bad guys. I found the female lead P.J. an interesting combination for the lead heroine. The males are all interesting & w/o spoiling anything I thought there was a really cool combination of super-natural beings... Aliens being almost a "non-issue" so far. I'm defiantly going to read the next book in the series :) Clare also @ www.Rabidfeary.com or Mousehead&tales@wordpress.com , tumblr too! Check out this book you'll love it!

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

There is so much to this story that I'm afraid of ruining the experience for future readers with too many details. I knew little about Hidden Gates when I started reading it, and it was fun to experience it page by page. Even though it's fictional, there is something that feels unexplanably real about it and I loved that.

To be fair, I helped with editing and its coming out through Dragonfairy in which I have ownership in it.

That being said.

It rocks! lol!

I love it. The book is un-fucking-predictable right up to the end.

Some of the politics made me go "hmm..." and there was a lot of things that didn't quite gel with me (I found some of the mythology underdeveloped, while other aspects of it were actually pretty intriguing), but overall I found it quite easy to ready and am curious as to where the story goes.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Warning: This review will contain some mild spoilers.

Summary

Hidden Gates is not what you would expect. It has people with gifts, it has aliens and, what’s more, it has dragons. Its writing style is YA, however it is a book which contains so many references and descriptions of sex that it would be better classified as New Adult. It is a book where a global invasion becomes a reality but it also a book where teen romance and a love quadrangle (yes, a love quadrangle – a love triangle is too small a phrase for this book) take centre stage.

If this sounds like the perfect story, full of surprises and sudden turns, then Hidden Gates is the book for you.

Plot

P.J. is a Seer, someone who receives premonitions of the future and is highly valued in her secret community, but which is also a recessive genetic trait. As a result, her choice of suitors is limited, more so by the fact that boys aren’t interested in her, suitable not. Suddenly, however, her life is spun out of control as her powers start to manifest and she starts falling for her best friend. Not to mention, a mysterious being called Khol turns up in her life, claiming to be bonded to her.

The main, over-arching plot, is one that I have seen before – an alien invasion years in the making. As is the teen romance story – girl falls in love with her best friend. Somehow, dragons also slip into the mix and the story becomes a whirlwind of different threads, each vying for precedence. A number of times, I felt that the author had tried to do too much with the novel. So many things are thrown at the reader that it was difficult to keep track of the book I was reading.

Characters

Unfortunately, while characters are often my favourite things about a book, the ones in Hidden Gates do little to earn my favour. P.J., as the lead, is probably one of the most annoying people I have ever read and, as this is written from her point of view, you do not get a break from her. Her insecurities do provide some respite for her annoying character, but I found her near impossible to relate to. Bryn was even worse.

Of all the characters, Khol and Jeremy were the ones that I enjoyed the most although, by the end, I started disliking them as well, Jeremy especially. I’m not entirely sure what the author was trying to say, but each male character regressed from someone who could be realistic and an enjoyable character to basically animals with only one thing on their brain (no surprise what that is). Khol, at least, maintained some kind of interest – he had his moments of ridiculousness, but he was easily the most fascinating and developed character. If only the book had included more about him and his background.

World/Setting

That aside, the world that Dyllin creates is intriguing. It could not be anything less with gates between worlds, aliens and dragons all bundled into one and hidden from the regular human world. Unfortunately, the most we see of it is the modern world and a short sojourn into another world that is, not only barely described, but so much like the human world that you forget it’s supposed to be somewhere else.

I did really enjoy the concept of Seers, Guardians, Gatekeepers and Speakers as protectors of this world and the gates; especially as a hidden community living among regular humans. While we see a lot of the Speaker and Seer powers, I am still not entirely sure what Guardians or Gatekeepers are actually capable of and I hope that this is something which will be explored in later books.

Final thoughts

Hidden Gates is a book which tries too hard to do too many things. It is a set up for the next books so lacks in much of a story of its own, instead focusing on the over-the-top relationships rather than the building of a magical and fascinating world. If the romance was turned down, or even off, and the book focused more on P.J.’s self-discovery and the over-arching plot, this could have been a fantastic book. Sadly, however, I could not enjoy it as much as I would have liked.

My favourite part: the phrase “Aram Cara” to mean soulmate – this use of language adds a bit of culture and depth to Khol’s world and gives the concept a bit more power where the word ‘soulmate’ is lacking.

At A Glance
Such a great concept buried under a lot of sex.

The Good
Despite the odd romantic beginning, I was drawn into this book straight away. The premise was fascinating and the characters were interesting. The whole supernatural people living among us idea was fun. They had their own society within our normal society and the dynamics fascinated me. Then the twists and turns Dyllin implemented at almost every turn were exhilarating. The more I read, the more I wanted to know what was really going on. I was amazed with where Dyllin took this book. I never would have guessed how complex everything ended up being.

Bryn was super hot in the beginning. I loved his passion, his love, and his feeling towards P.J.. Bryn + P.J. = steamy. I never expected the depth of their connection. Khol was also oh so delicious. He is not really a good buy, but not really a bad guy either. He does some terrible things but before all that, I really grew to like him. He never hides his feelings for P.J.. He was pretty honest up front with what he wanted. I felt bad for him near the end. He got the raw end of the deal, but he also deserved it. I think I liked Khol so much because you never knew if you should love him or hate him. When a character isn't 100% good or bad, they keep you on your toes. And I can't help but respect that.

I am interested to see what is going to happen next. The book ends when all seems hopeless. Not much progress has been made with the problems that come up, so I feel like I need to know how it all works out.

The Bad
The world-building is greatly lacking. I never really understood the what and why of a lot of things. It's like we get thrown into P.J.'s world without a map or precursor or anything. Which also meant the character development was flimsy. What happened was the romance took precedent over all that important stuff.

I could tell from the beginning that something was wrong when P.J. kept vowing that Bryn was only her friend and she has NEVER thought of him as more. Then all of a sudden, within pages, she was madly in love with him and couldn't live without him. No build up, no slow romance, just BAM, insta-love.

I think the immaturity of these characters who were suppose to save the world really got to me. They all focused on sex more than on what was going wrong with the world. The whole plot of the book was pushed under the rug for a whole bunch of chitty chitty bang bang. And P.J. pretty much rubs up on three separate guys, actually four. I am all for women expressing their sexuality in any way they choose, but dear lord, have some restraint. Sure, these guys are suppose to have some sexual mojo but it got so tiring watching her "resist" every person with a penis.

By the end, I no longer really liked Bryn and P.J. together. Bryn turned into a hypocrite and abusive, and P.J. took too much crap from him.

The Snuggly
If you are looking for a paranormal read with a lot of sex, look no further. This was almost like a paranormal romance. P.J. was hornier than a teenage boy hiding in a girls' locker room. The sexual tension, sexual energy, and just plain sex never ended. It took up most of the book. I enjoyed it sometimes, especially in the beginning when Bryn and P.J. had that puppy-love thing going. It got a lot more aggressive near the end. And there is a rape scene, so beware.

Final Thoughts
I might read book two if I get it free somehow, just to see what happens, but really, I wouldn't suggest this book to many people. Just too many bads for my taste. Hesitant to recommended.

Quotes
"You'll always be my best friend."
“Every time I’m with you, it’s like coming home.”

*****

His lips met mine with an undercurrent of electricity. The kiss started out soft and sweet but began to gain momentum quickly. I gasped as his tongue slid in to deftly take control of my mouth. An unfamiliar feeling of liquid heat pooled in my middle, causing a moan to escape from me as I wrapped my arms around his shoulders in an attempt to pull him closer. It was like my body was on fire, and Bryn was the only one who could bring me relief.
