By the looks of the cover I thought it was going to be a typical girly girl high school crush with those idiotic-push-over-jock types meets nice-naive-nerd-girl. But it wasn't. It was actually quiet nice. Mind you the book is short, once you read it, it would leave you with unanswered questions... so obviously you'll wanna read the Part 2 and 3 and 4 series but in the first book...
Miss Puckett - the author - would have you gripped to the book until she leaves you high and dry wanting more... to answer your burning questions - but don't give me wrong that's a good thing but kinda frustrating - especially if your broke and you can't by another e-book until you get a summer job. lol. story of my life.
Julie Little is living with her Uncle Charlie and her cousin Matt in their small hometown. Her Uncle Charlie is also the local Sheriff/ Police Chief. Julie is living with them after her parents were murdered and now it's senior year and Julie has no idea what she wants to do after she has finished high school. This year though, the high school has implemented to get the students thinking a senior year project where they have to spend 20 hours in a job field of their choice. For some like her cousin Matt, this is easy as he loves cooking and has got himself some time working in the local restaurant but Julie, whose life stopped when her parents died has no idea. Stuck, her Uncle Charlie suggests the police station, and needing the hours she reluctantly agrees. It is here though that Julie will meet Trigger aka Lucas. A guy who will slowly worm his way into her heart starting with Book #1 - Just a Little Crush. What I loved about this book was that it was a quick read and one you didn't have to think about too deeply which is great when you are looking for a book to just hit that spot.
Just a little crush Tracie Puckett Book review By Madison Brunton
Genre The genre of this novel, is Romance it's about how a girl (Julie) has a crush on a boy(Luke). The fact that there is also a mixture of other feelings: Betrayal, hope, friendship etc really helps to elevate the mood and love throughout the story.
Audience I believe the target audience of this book is young teenagers (ages 10-14) because the language that is shown in the book isn't very mature and the vocabulary is limited. To me this book could of had a bit more thought put into it. It also could of 'show not tell' better because I was getting bored with the story.
Language The language in this book is using the technique of colloquial language because the writing is very informal and the book was worded the way that I would usual speak.
Characters Julie: High school senior who doesn't know what she wants to do when it's time for community work service, and she doesn't know what she wants to do with her life. She has blue coloured eyes, blonde hair and she is a seventeen year old orphan. Luke: A policeman who tries to help out Julie with her Community Work Service. Luke has a shocking past also like Julie. Will Luke and Julie have just a little crush? Matt: Julie's cousin, he knows what he wants in life- to be a chef. Julie and Matt live together because Julie's parents are dead. Matt is the senior class hottie and all the girls love him. He is also the worlds best cousin because he always sticks by you and never betrays you. Uncle Charlie: Matt's Dad, Julie's Uncle. The head of the Oaktown Police Office. He convinces Julie to do her community work service at the Police Station. The whole town know Charlie for what a great man he is.
Author Tracie Puckett is a fun, person who enjoys sleeping, reading and napping she is also a stage actress and is the author of the 'just a little' series, some of the books that she has written include Just A Little Crush- released in 2012, the new girl 2012 and many more. The genre that she enjoys is Romance, contemporary and young adult.
Theme The theme of this book would definitely be love. Because Luke and Julie the two main characters, fall in love and the book is called 'Just A Little Crush'.The theme could also be friendship because in the story friendship is a major thing that is shown. Everyone is also linked in the story through friendship.
Short version of the story. Julie and Matt walk out of school talking about the assignment that they have to do - Community Work Service, Matt knows exactly what he'll do, Julie isn't so sure though. As they open the doors into the house Uncle Charlie is there waiting, they tell him about the Assignment Julie tells him how she doesn't know what she'll do. Uncle Charlie then offers to help her by letting her do her experience at the Police station. Julie finally takes up the offer. While working at the station she is partnered up with someone called Luke
First of all, look at this cover. This is so dumb looking! Who designed this dreck?
Secondly, wasn't she supposed to have this job shadowing thing approved by the school? Cause she didn't. The very next day, she's off, driving around with a random police officer. Plot hole!
Add that to shitty writing, an ass of a male lead, a whiny brat for a female lead, the kinda creepy inappropriate of the cop hitting on the under age chick (I don't care if she's 17, is still underage & his bosses kid. Not cool!) & the totally unrealistic-ness of something that it is supposed to be contemporary fiction, & you get one fucking star.
Really. This budding, insta-love riddle novella is kinda creepy. This is supposed to be a professional situation to learn about her future & all these two seem to care about is making goo goo eyes at each other. Is this supposed to be cute? Was that scene where she went on and on about her stupid infatuation supposed to be funny?
Cause it wasn't. It was painfully unfunny.
Not to mention stupid.
Maybe it's just that I'm the wrong reader for this, since I have ZERO interest in romance. (It was free so I gave it a go) but I like to things know a good story when I read it, despite the genre.
"Just a little crush" was NOT it.
& Seriously. What kind of good police officers let s teenager drive around on duty with a cop? Isn't it dangerous?! What if she got hurt?!
The book,"Just a little crush" is about a high school senior that has to have a job for only 20 hours. Julie is the name of the high school senior. She has to have a job because its for a school project. The job she picked was to work at a police station with her Uncle Chris. She stays with her Uncle Chris because both of her parents died in a police accident. But, when she starts working at the police station, she develops a crush on one of the police officers.
My reaction to the book was that it wasn't that good in some parts, but in some other parts, it was alright. For example, her cousin Matt, had explained the story of what happened to her parents. The book was alright to read, but there wasn't enough information to the book. It needed more details.
I would not recommend this book because it didn't have enough details to it. Also, it didn't give enough information about the background of the characters that much. I really didn't enjoy this book as I thought I would. "Just a little crush" is a good book, but no one should read it.
Just a Little Crush is cute, but some things were sort of weird (like the job-shadowing program). Maybe it's just a small-town kind of thing?
I didn't particularly like the romance between Julie and Luke/Trigger because of the age difference. Julie is 17 and still in high school, while Luke is already in his 20s, working as a police officer. He's much more mature than she is so it widens the difference in their ages. It feels wrong that they could have a thing going on...
But I still thought Just a Little Crush was an enjoyable read, as long as you can overlook the age difference between the characters and the unrealistic events. :)
I'm still unsure whether I'll continue with the following books or not.
(Source: Downloaded for free from Smashwords.) 17-year-old Julie is less than impressed when for her next school assignment she is told that she has to do 20 hours of work experience. Accepting a place at her uncle’s police station for the assignment seems like an easy way out, and so she takes it. Julie soon learns though, that it is the police officer showing her around that she likes more than the job though. But is this just a little crush?
This book was okay, but there were just a couple of little niggly things, that irritated me a bit.
Firstly, this school assignment turns out to be Julie’s uncle’s idea – he is the police chief. His reasons for the assignment are solid enough, but since when does the police chief go out of his way to sort out school assignments for kids randomly? This is a little odd.
Secondly, Uncle Charlie wants Julie to do her hours at the police station. She accepts, and is there at 5.30 the next morning. When was she supposed to have had this approved by her school? Were the kids really just expected to turn up somewhere randomly for work experience the very next day? This is also a bit odd.
Thirdly, I’m not trying to drop spoilers, but another member of Julie’s family was a police officer, and ended up dead because of the job. This happened fairly recently as well. Does Uncle Charlie not think that it is a little insensitive of him to send his niece off doing work experience as a police officer, when someone close to her got killed because of the same job? Personally, I think this is if anything, a bit cruel, and surely she knows enough about the job without doing this work experience?
When Julie’s cousin then teases her that she has ‘a little crush’ on the officer that has been showing her the ropes, I seriously thought that he was just taking the micky out of her. I really did not notice any chemistry between the pair at all, and when she then admits that she does like him, I could barely believe it. He was kind of irritating, and made a bid deal about how great it was being a police officer. I don’t know what exactly it was that Julie was attracted to.
The ending was a non-ending. I’m assuming that this story continues in the sequel, as this one literally ends half-way through Julie’s work experience, with very little having been resolved. I didn’t like this part of the story enough to be tempted to buy the second half though, no matter how much I dislike not knowing how things end. Overall; too many holes in the story, and not enough chemistry between the lead characters. 4 out of 10.
I decided to read this book because even though I didn't know what it was about, however the title does give a bit away, by the front page it looked like it was for my sort if age and I was looking for a girly book.
On the bingo board this book can come under either a book written by a female author or a book with a female main character. This isn't very interesting however it did make the book better that a female wrote a book about a female because this means that the author understands more than if a male wrote it and just made some things up because they can't really connect on the right level.
My favourite quote form this book is "And maybe, just maybe...I wasn't the only one experiencing what Luke so lovingly labeled just a little crush." This is my favourite quote because it is the very last line in the book and it is what the book is about. It also leaves you hanging because you don't actually know how Luke is feeling.
Something new that I have learnt from this book is to give things a go and not just jump to conclusions about what you think of it because in the book that it just what Julie had done about the assignment however she turned out to have really liked it.
A character in this book that I really liked was Matt. He was interesting to me because he always had a positive mind set about the assignment even though he didn't want to do it. I also really liked it how he was always there for Julie and even though they were just cousins, he felt more like a brother in my opinion.
First, this wasn't a book. It wasn't even a novelette. It was about the length of a book report, only with the ending cut off. I swear, it was eighteen pages, tops. Not worth publishing.
Second, if a cop shoots himself in the foot and loses a toe, he is no longer going to be a patrolman. Because losing a big toe is a BIG deal. You can't run (or even walk properly) without a big toe. So Luke wouldn't be a cop. The story is already fatally flawed.
Thirdly, no chief of police is going to put a 22(ish) year old cop in a car with a seventeen year old girl alone, all day. It just isn't going to happen.
Fourth... PAINFUL. Every scene is painful. Luke is a total asshole to her. No, really. TOTAL. Her understanding cousin isn't at ALL understanding. And as for Julie, she's just another completely uninteresting biotch. The characters are shallow, mean, and completely undeveloped.
As for the writing, the author doesn't describe *ANYTHING*. Not the town, not the cop car, not the emotions. They say Julie isn't how she used to be, but nobody knows what that was (or what she is, now), because it's never fleshed out. Not even a little.
Don't bother with this. It's horrible.

I found out about this book after reading Tracie Puckett's Webster Grove series ,and may I say this woman has an amazing talent of making the reader feel connected to her stories. Just a little crush follows the life of a High School girl named Julie trying to find out what she wants to be in life ,and once she has to find out what she wants to be sooner rather than latter due to a school project you can say she's not really happy about it. She goes to work at her uncles station for her project ,and she meets Trigger ,and or Luke Reibeck. Trigger becomes her mentor for the project ,and to her dismay she develops just a little crush. I thought this book was incredible ,and left me wanting more! I can't wait to purchase the rest of the Just a Little series. This book may be short but it really keeps you hooked till the last page. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a serious, funny ,and quite romantic read. :)

This was an okay story, but the main character was really quite irritating. She basically spent all her time whining and moaning, didn't want to have to do any work whatsoever, and was more interested in flirting with a cop than the work he was doing.
I also didn’t understand how just hours after the work assignment program thing was announced, that Julie was off to the police station at 5.30 am to start her shadowing! Wouldn’t she have had to have get this assignment approved and signed off on? Were the kids really expected to not turn up to school the next morning but to have acquired assignments overnight? And there were other plot holes the size of swimming pools as well.
Even the romance in this was pants. I really didn’t see why Julie suddenly fancied this police officer, he was a bit of an ass really, although that probably meant they were well suited as Julie was a whiney bitch as well. 4 out of 10
I got this as a freebie from amazon so thought I would check it out. I did. I tried, and I'm kind of glad I did, but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would (though I didn't hate it, I definitely didn't like it). Took me less than an hour to read, and yes it's a quick read but I just couldn't connect to the characters (the heroine, in the first place). The heroine left no impression on me. None! I don't know if I like her, or dislike her. Weird really! I don't know if this series gets any better, but to be honest with you guys, I actually don't care. And yeah, I'm pretty sure I won't be checking the rest of the stories in the series. Not my cup of tea, really.
It could've been worse, considering my previous experiences with indie authors and freebies. It was a somehow cute and decent read, though it lacks of a strong plot and there's nothing really original about the story line. If you're looking for a story with a great premise and well developed characters, this ain't for you.
Good Lord. What is the deal with this crap in which you have to buy each one separately in order to get the whole story? I received this first story free (thinking it was an actual full length novel instead of "part 1 in a series of novelettes") and I guess I am expected to buy the next one now because I just "need" to know what happens next? Uh, no thanks.
This is great for ole' romantics like me. If you get really emotional about deaths, don't read it! But if you're a tough cookie, be my guest! It's funny and exactly what happens in high school.
In part one of Just a Little Crush, seventeen year-old Julie, who lives in Oakland, California, is in high school and lives with her Uncle Charlie and his son Mark since her parents dead a year ago. Her dad was a cop who put a drug dealer in jail and the drug dealer vowed he’d kill him and his family when he was released. He kept to his word and killed Julie’s parents. The drug dealer didn’t know about Julie, their daughter, because she was out of town when it all happened. So now she lived with her Uncle Charlie and Cousin Mark. It’s Julie and Mark’s senior year and they are required to job shadow someone and write a paper on what it’s like for them and what you do on the job. Julie wasn’t so thrilled about the project and didn’t want to do it. Unlike her cousin Mark, Julie didn’t know what she wanted to do after high school. She had no clue who she wanted to job shadow so she just decided to job shadow her Uncle Charlie who is Oakland’s chief of police. However, little did she know she’d end up having to job shadow another cop who took his job very seriously and Julie did not. This caused some confrontation between the two of them. Julie at the same time thought the cop, who was 20 years old named Luke, was very cute. She started to develop a crush on him. At the same time she couldn’t stand him because she was so rude and they just didn’t get along. When they both got to know each other and each other’s past and situation they found out that they had a lot in common and developed feelings for each other. Just like Julie, Luke had a parent who was a cop which was his mom. His mom died on duty and Luke took on the legacy of his mom and became a cop. Julie was still holding onto the past and was mad at her parents for what happened to them. She had been holding in these feelings for the past year. Luke helps Julie cope with these feelings and is there to support her.
I thought this book was pretty good for part one of a series. I wasn’t that interested in the book in the beginning but as I couldn’t to read and got the part with Julie and Luke it got really interesting. At first it seemed as if Julie and Luke weren’t going to get along at all and that Luke would never feel the same way since he was older. It turned out to be the complete opposite of that. Julie and Luke actually at similar life situations but how they dealt with theirs was different. Julie helped on to her parent’s death and wouldn’t let it go and never expressed how she felt. Everything changed for her after that she became a completely different person. On the other hand, Luke took this situation in a positive way and knew that his mom was in a better place and that she was a hero. He looks up to his mom and carried on her legacy and became a cop. This is why he took his job so seriously and didn’t get along with Julie because she didn’t take anything seriously anymore. This book shows how death of a loved one doesn’t have to cause you to give up on your life. That you can move on and succeed in life in honor of that loved one.
If you’re interested in romance books then this is a good book to read. It a quick read so it should only take a couple of days to finish. However, it’s still has a good plot even though it’s short. It is a series so if you like romantic series books that are quick to read then Just a Little Crush would be a good series for you to read.
When I found this ebook, I was looking for a short, young adult sort of romance story. I wanted something that would catch my attention and keep me occupied, but at the same time be an easy read that I could recommend to my friends. That's exactly what I found in Just a Little Crush.
It didn't take very long to read, but at the same time it had a developed storyline, that was both unique and believable. You meet this teen that has been struck hard by the death of her parents, and becoming aware that she needs to face what' s been troubling her. She has to shadow a handsome young police officer as part of a school assignment, and naturally, being underneath it all a hormonal teenager, she starts to fall for him. The officer isn't a perfect Prince Charming, known for his snide remarks and straight-to-the-point attitude, but come on, who doesn't get tired of YA stories always having "perfect" guys. His unique personality just added to the story in my opinion.
All that being said, I do have a few criticisms. For me, I would have to say that the relationship developed a smidge too quickly. I mean, it wasn't long after they met each other that they started recognizing each other's feelings outside of the assignment at hand. One second they'd be arguing, then the next they' d be walking in a forest, hand in hand (literally). But I didn't see this to be a HUGE take-away from the story, as by the end, I wasn't ready to stop reading. I didn't really feel like the story should be over quite yet, which is probably partly due to the short length of the story. But I do real like it ended smoothly, rather than just crashing to an end abruptly. Of course, there are also the other books in the series, which I look forward to reading. This is definitely a story that leaves you wanting more!
At first, I wasn't sure if I should take the time to read such a short story, that seemed like it couldn't possibly amount to anything in Just 80-something pages. But once you read the story, you' ll see that it really does.
Just a Little Crush is a quick, feel-good read with a unique plot and believable characters that add up to story that is definitely worth your time!
This was an adorable story, it was a quick read however still managed to leave you wanting more. The cover is very pink, it makes it bright and stand out catching your attention immediately. It also applies to how you would think our protagonist would look, such as the glasses and blonde hair.
Julie has suffered a lot of pain in the past year, she lost her parents and so is now staying with her cousin and uncle. And being in the police force runs in the family. When they are tasked with spending twenty hours at their chosen work placement, Julie feels as if her worst nightmare has come true due to the fact that she has no idea what path she wants to go down in her future. But when she is offered a placement at the police station, she assumes it going to be a breeze... maybe not.
Julie is a character you will either love or hate. She has a bad attitude and feels that everything she wants will just be given to her on a silver platter meaning she doesn't have to lift a finger. But, we later find out that she was never always like this, even her cousin has noticed how withdrawn she has become with her surroundings, meaning the reader may then sympathise with her because of how much she has gone through.
The romance side of the story was interesting. In ways it was quite funny the way they were both very stubborn and quip with each other, however, you did see how much alike they were creating a stronger bond between them.
This is a fun and quick fluffy read that will want you begging to know what happens next! Part 2 in the series: Just a Little Embrace.

My Review: The title was well suited for the story of this one. A short little story about a teen crush. While so many Young Adult books are about love at first sight or love that works out and develops a lasting relationship, Puckett keeps it light and a little more real. Julie, like any real teenager is confused by her emotions and feelings for the cop she is shadowing. I like how everything is a lot more realistic than other romances I have read. It doesn't get all serious, both parties don't have this magical attraction, they just develop a little crush. Since this was a short story, the characters and story didn't have time to develop much or for you to really get attached to the characters, but it was still a light, fun and clean little brush with romance.
