You might be wondering, five stars? For a reader? And I say YES, because this is the kind of book that high-interest texts should be. I learned new things! The art wasn't just recycled from every other crappy school/library space book. And the featured astronaut was a lady!

I wanted to review a few children's books to help other parents and grandparents who are dedicated to helping their children become better readers. My oldest granddaughter who now eleven began reading at an early age. It's a well know fact that children who have been read to since very early in life tend to learn to love to read. My son is an avid reader as well. From my own experience of raising an avid reader and grand reader (if you will) is to read to them as early as possible.
I enjoyed reading this book with my granddaughter for multiple reasons. The main character in the book is a female and the book overall provides a great deal of conversation to be had as you read it to your child. I strongly suggest that you read it one time before presenting it. Think about side discussions or other material you might want to interject. I personally like to add a bit of current day knowledge and statistics to anything I read to the children. Sometimes I like to add props or some kind of game idea. I think this helps children to develop good habits for book reports and such later. Overall, this book provides a great deal of information that can be expanded on.

A Level 2 Beginning to Read Alone DK reader, “Astronaut Living in Space” helps beginning readers learn about being an astronaut. It describes the various steps necessary for an astronaut to prepare for a flight into space and follows an astronaut as she prepares for a shuttle mission.

Full-color pictures and illustrations accompany the engaging text and a special “Space Facts” column is included.

Highly recommended.

Written in 2000, the book is no longer up-to-date.

Pluses - beautiful pictures, focus on a female astronaut, correct details - both what children will be interested (how to eat and sleep in space) and what they need to learn (first you practice on the Earth, then you get to go to space; exercise in space is a must).

Minus - Set in the defunct Space Shuttle program.

Contains many of the basic facts about astronauts and the ISS of other books on this level. Unique in format; the narrative nonfiction tells the story of Linda, an astronaut going to, working on, and returning from the ISS. I think this format is more engaging for younger audiences.

I have to agree with some fellow reviewers - this is a 5 star book for what it is. It's a simple exploration of the life of an astronaut, from a girl's dream to the reality of the application and training progress, through the whole of a shuttle launch, the practicalities of eating, washing, sleeping and yes using the potty in space. The servicing of a telescope to fulfil her job and why that is important.
Love that this is a girl's story for my daughter to relate to.
Love that it explores the aspects of space life in a simple straightforward way but still uses many technical terms for the budding scientist!

A good primer on becoming an astronaut and their missions in space. The book has a lot of pictures, a simple narrative, and an interesting story, so it's great for beginning readers.
