The Nephilim #2

The Fire Within

Rate this book
She will set his world ablaze.

Detective Dante Zucco has been tasked with bringing a Shemyaza to justice. As a seris Nephilim, his inner fire comes in handy in battle, but not in love. He's been burned before, but maybe this time he'll find a blaze that matches his own.

One of the families of the human victims has hired Elizabeth Rand, PI, to investigate the murders. It's all Dante can do to keep his hands off the alluring, stubborn woman. A single glance from her gray eyes, and Dante goes up in flames.

Beth suspects Dante is one of the Nephilim, angelic warriors bound to hunt down the evil Shemyaza who haunt the night and feed off the innocent. If the murderer she's tracking is a Shem, then keeping a Nephilim close would be only logical. She agrees to work with the hunky detective, unaware of his growing feelings for her.

When Beth gets too close to finding out the truth behind the Shem kills, her life is put in danger, forcing Dante to protect her the only way he can: with fire.

I've had the Nephilim series on my TBR list for a while, so when this book popped up on Netgalley, I jumped at the offer to read it in exchange for an honest review.

Even though this is book #2 in the series, it can be read as a standalone, which I obviously did. I did not feel like I was missing any relevant information, although both Beth and Dante were introduced in the previous book.

A Nephilim is half angel, half human. Nephilim live in our world, have regular jobs and date regular people. But Nephilim are also warriors. They protect humans from the Shemyaza, Shem for short. The Shem started out as angels but have turned evil. The Shem hunt humans and eat them.

Dante is a Nephilim with the ability to control fire, but his daytime job is that of a detective. That is how he first came into contact with Beth, a nosy PI. Although drawn to each other, they both fight the latent attraction. But when a victiom dies right outside Beth's office and the grief stricken husband hires her to look into the murder, they are forced to work together. Soon, sparks fly despite Dante's reservations to bring Beth into his world.

Beth and Dante have good chemistry. Despite the friction that's caused by Dante's reservations o bring Beth into his world and Beth's tendency to aggrevate him. Their scenes are fun, and yes; quite hot;-)

More than Beth and Dante, it was the Russian Brother Piotr, that intrigued me the most. He is an angelic warrior like Dante, but Dante is deeply distrustful of him because Piotr shares physical characteristics and a last name with the leader of the Shem. Piotr seems to be walking a fine line between good and evil, and his obvious vulnerability made him all the more fascinating.

I enjoyed the story, but ultimately it was a fairly standard PNR. However, when Piotr's book is released I will be interested in reading his story. I think his story will be an interesting one.

Full Review for Library Journal:

Headstrong PI Elizabeth Rand has met her match in fiery detective Dante Zucco. But there is more to him than meets the eye. Dante is one of the Nephilim, the progeny of a human and an angel. Attracted to each other despite their mutual distaste, Elizabeth and Dante are forced to team up to solve a murder that happened in front of Elizabeth’s office. Dante immediately senses that this is a job more for his Neph side than his detective side. As one of the Neph, Dante is tasked with hunting down Shemyaza demons to protect humans as well as his own kind. And this murder reeks of Shem. But when one of the Shem comes after Elizabeth, Dante, like any good hero, is forced to protect her at all costs. Soon the sparks that fly between the two ignite into a blaze, with hot (and some tender) love scenes along with thrilling plot twists. Throw in a new spin upon meeting the traditional Italian family plus a mysterious and powerful Russian Nephilim, and readers will be hooked, waiting to see what happens next and who ends up with whom.

Verdict Bell’s latest series title (after All for You) is recommended to devotees of fantasy romance, especially of novels that focus on angels and demons.

Better than book one.
I’ve had this series on my TBR list for a while.
Though I didn’t like book one very much, mainly due to the heroine Abby, I did want to read about the other characters we met.
Elizabeth/Beth and Dante were a great balance.
I found Elizabeth a better heroine as she was much more capable and sensible and wasn’t prone to act stupidly.
Funny to see Dante falling after all his joking in book one about not going that route.
Loved what happened in the end with Dante’s powers.
Read through my library.

This is book two in Ms Bells Nephilim series and just let's the world building continue to run. A world with both good descendants of angels and also those who are thoroughly evil , the Shemyaza but more than anything a completely original take on what Nephilim could actually be. A tireless battle between good and evil and it just so happens that the storyline in this particular book is well and truly hot and yes pun intended!
Dante is descended from angels and works both as a police detective and also as an angelic warrior seeking only to destroy the evil Shem. He has an overwhelming attraction to a certain feisty private detective but bringing her further into his world would only put her at risk. Elizabeth has recently seen the very stuff of nightmares and has no intention of letting the infuriating but gorgeous Dante get under her skin but when she discovers a dead woman literally outside her office their two worlds look set to collide! Dante might want to protect Elizabeth but she's not the type of woman to run and hide. As they uncover the truth it's clear that age old enemies are to blame but political machinations are also in play. When you can't trust those you should rely on just how do you know who the bad guys are?
Wow what a complicated idea this series is. First there are so many different types of angelic descendants that if I'm honest I had to keep stopping and remembering who could do what and just which powers they had! The good guys all seem to have different abilities ranging from flight to healing and our hero has the gift of utilising fire! The bad guys also have diverse talents and both sides have different names for their sub types and if I'm really honest it did stop the flow a teeny bit as all this was explained. Nevertheless the actual storyline was very interesting with political intrigue, murder and blackmail all playing a part. There was a mystery to solve and luckily our heroine Elizabeth was most definitely on the case! She's a gung-ho type who doesn't seem to flinch away from any challenge and is extremely likeable. Elizabeth is also loyal to her friends and I look forward to discovering more about some of them.
Then of course there is Detective Dante Zucco, part angel , part Italian male and most definitely all man! He has no trouble in recognising his growing feelings towards Elizabeth and certainly no intention of ever letting her go! His Italian family are absolutely hilarious and I could easily imagine the cringing which made me smile! There's nothing as annoying as a well meaning family and I thought the author did a really good job in bringing that idea across to the reader.
So what can I say? A very hot romance ( in more ways than one!) with plenty of chemistry. Lots of world building and a suspense filled story that really entertained this reader. If you enjoy paranormal romance then start checking out this author as her imagination is top notch!

Oh I liked this one from Dana Marie Bell! I read the first of her Nephilim series and liked it pretty well. I had a pretty big problem with the heroine in that one though. I'm so glad that the hero in The Fire Within was so much better and I enjoyed this book a lot more.

Elizabeth Rand was a kick-ass hero! She had a great personality - full of fire and attitude. She's a private investigator and has found that she has something of a knack for getting under the hero's skin. I think that was one of my favorite things about her - she knows that she drives him nuts and kind of relishes it. She's also really strong and brave, which I thought was really lacking in the first book. Elizabeth can for sure take care of herself, and often does. With such an amazing hero, it was nice that she was able to hold her own in the bravery department. I was so happy that her fearlessness never veered into stupidity.

Dante Zucco is a police officer AND an angelic warrior. His kind's existence is kept a secret except for a few humans close to the warriors. Dante isn't keen on Elizabeth knowing his secret but it's too late - she's already seen what Dante is and what the warriors are fighting against - the Shemyaza (demons). Dante's specialty is fire. It does his bidding and he fights using it. It was pretty cool and Dante was pretty great. In addition to being a kick-ass warrior, he's also a traditional Italian man to whom family is extremely important. The scenes with Dante's family were really funny and occasionally frustrating thanks to his meddling older sister. I loved it!

Elizabeth and Dante have serious chemistry. Every minute that they're together has tension... some of it just funny and some of it sexual. I loved these two together! The only thing I could maybe complain about was that I was occasionally confused as to who the author was talking about when Elizabeth was around. She was sometimes called Elizabeth, especially by Dante. But then sometimes, she was referred to as Beth. For a while I thought they were two different characters but I'm pretty sure they're the same. Other than that, it was a pretty great read. There are tons of laughs, plenty of action and lots of sibling interference! Anyone who enjoys paranormal romance will really enjoy this book!

Thrilling action and riveting suspense keeps reader entertained throughout this paranormal romance. Detective Dante Zucco finds himself teaming up with private investigator, Elizabeth Rand when a young woman is found murdered. And he has a few problems with that, the murderer is not human and he can’t seem to keep his hands off the alluring stubborn woman.

This fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on their toes with lots of action, suspense, drama and romance. The author brings this intriguing world to life with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination and the well orchestrated action scenes are exciting and believable as the suspense scenes draw the reader deeper into the story by arousing lots of curiosity. The characters are strong, compelling, easily related to and grab the reader’s attention right from the beginning.

The attraction between Dante and Beth has sparks flying everywhere and the sex scenes are hot and steamy, but it‘s the relationship that really adds lots of spice to the story as it starts off with the two not liking each other very much until they both find themselves saying “what’s up with this?” as they question their attraction which leads to some snarky and fun conversations with each other. The interconnection with the other characters in the story also adds depth and spice to the story as which seems to be leading readers somewhere with every conversation which just invites the reader to want to know more.

The author has created a fascinating world of Nephilim with some refreshing different features and some captivating characters that intrigue as well as entertains. I haven’t read the first one…yet, and I thoroughly enjoyed this one, so you can certainly read it without reading the first one, but the story does reference the previous events so I wish I had read it first. I am also looking forward to reading more books in this series as I can’t help but feel that there is an underlying connection to the evil happenings of the Shems, like there is definitely a bigger picture that is just out of sight.

I was given The Fire Within by Manic Readers for an honest review

Elizabeth Rand is a private investigator who does her job well and when a murder is committed outside her office, she is determined to find out the who, what, when, and where much the consternation of one Detective Dante Zucco. With their growing attraction to each other fighting to take center stage it is a wonder they manage to solve their case.

First and foremost, I want to say that Dana Marie Bell is one of my favorite authors and I will always be eager to read her books. That being said please, Ms. Dana, forgive me any negatives as there are a few. I want to say that I will give The Fire Within a five-star review but in all good conscience I cannot because even if I plan to read it again there are is still the issue of edits that I wish I could ignore. There was one sentence that has words repeated making the sentence not make any sense and the ridiculous number of periods where there shouldn’t be any periods and lastly sentences with extra words that didn’t even belong in the sentence.

I loved the story line and wish that I had read All For You, the first book in the series first because I have a feeling that would have added some back story to Elizabeth and Dante. I absolutely loved chapters ten and eleven and most of my favorite quotes came from them and then of course there are the amazingly hot bedroom scenes. The characters were personable and easy to relate to even if they didn’t always seem to relate to each other. Dante for some reason made me think of Grease ever time his last name came up, which I thought was amusing.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

These books are adorable, romantic, smutty, and awesome! There are half-angels, demon-like angels, family drama, work drama, relationship drama, and lots of murder-mystery goodness! This installment in the series was a lot of fun to read, and it probably isn’t even necessary to have read book 1 first.

Dante is a detective angel with a wild temper who cannot seem to get away from the stubborn PI, Beth, who has been haunting him since Abby and Seth’s ordeal. These two very strong willed individuals really crashed into one another in the best possible way. Their romantic relationship was filled with fun and sexy times. The story has its usual intrigue in the form of a murder/blackmail plot that pulls in all the different portions of Beth’s new life.

If you’re looking for a really fun new series, and you’re not averse to some sizzling paranormal romance, you should check this set of books out. It’s not too dark, not too gory, but fills all my paranormal romance requirements, with a nice action filled story as a bonus. There is a bit of a pattern that indicates we will be seeing the rest of the angels pair up with their mates in the near future, and I’m super excited to see these quirky characters have to deal with these drastic changes. I’m rooting for every single one of the character

The more I read about the angels in Dana Marie Bell’s series, the more I love them! They are so different from everything I have previously read about angels and they are so much better!

Dante Zucco is amazing – he’s sweet, funny, protective and hot (pun intended!). The only thing I don’t like about him is his name. I can’t be the only one thinking Danny Zuko? (Grease, if you didn’t know). It annoyed me a lot more than it should have, men I couldn’t stop reading Danny instead of Dante and it drove me insane! Beth is just the right amount of sassy – she is so much fun and she is so cute. She is insecure, but hides it behind a tough façade. Together, the two of them are very close to perfect.

The story is a mix up of a detective novel, a paranormal novel and a romance novel. It may sound a bit weird, but it works! I feared that the detective-part would be long and boring to me since I don’t read that genre very often, but it was very intriguing and helped the relationship between Danny Dante and Beth develop naturally.

The story is not very deferent from the one in All For You, but that wasn’t a problem since I read this series because of the characters and Danny Dante and Beth are nothing like Seth and Abby.

I really hope there is going to be more books in this series, because I sooooo want to read about Piotr!!!

I read the first book in this series and liked it well enough that I thought I'd give this one a try. At first I was confused cause I didn't remember Beth or the part she played in the first, but I could remember Dante. This book starts a little later and pairs those two up in chasing down a murderer. The relationship between the two starts off being pretty intense considering that Dante doesn't like the attraction he feels for Beth and the fact that she knows about the Nephilim. Things heat up pretty quick between them and they can't hide their feelings from each other or the demon they're tracking down. And of course there is plenty of heat.

Looking forward to reading more about this group of guys tasked with keeping humans safe. There seems to be at least two of the Nephilim that has a mate hanging around so I'm excited to see where that goes.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

The Fire Within by Dana Marie Bell - book two of the Nephilim series - A story filled with mystery that intrigues the reader with its sizzling characters and the paranormal/fantasy story content. The book was, at times, engrossing and others mystifying. Strong characters with many references to the first book, All For You (Abby & Seth's story), of the series and the character confrontations within that story and the resulting outcomes. Interesting characters, events and situations within the story with an explosive confrontation towards the end that leaves you guessing for the following book of the series.

I was really confused when I realised that I had actually read the first book in this series but couldnt remember. There are a lot of references to it in this book but it is a standalone.
I found it pretty standard PR, it wasn't particularly interesting & it certainly wasn't anything new. The characters never managed to drum up any feelings within me & I wasn't invested in the story.
