Master Sheng-yen combines wisdom gained from years of study and practice with knowledge of the contemporary world to show how Chan and Buddha’s teachings are still relevant today. Beginners, as well as those already on the path, will find clear and useful guidance as the revered teacher answers questions from his students on the simple yet elusive principles of Chan (Zen) practice.
This is the 2024 book club recommendation for my local chan temple. It’s written in a question answer fashion divided over a few broad categories (practice, philosophy / doctrine and finally social issues). Apparently these Q&A’s are from a weekly newsletter he wrote for western students.
I really enjoyed it, a lot of rich answers around karma and Buddhist doctrine generally. It’s rare to see these principles applied to “modernish” life. I say modernish because the book was written in the early 90s and the newsletter from the 80s. Still lots to get and deeply practical. I love chan for how practical it is.
I really appreciated how he contrasted chan and zen. Pointing out how it’s mostly culture. Emphasizing that Buddhism and even chan is constantly evolving.
I also found some of the questions amusing. It seemed some of the students were trying to get him to contradict himself. It never happened, he’s clearly a really smart guy and a real master of the topic.
Anyways well worth a read if you can find it. I got my copy on loan from the Vancouver public library.
Discourse on Chan or Zen Buddhism. In-depth look at karma, the principals of practice and meditation. Some I for regarding the differences and similarities of the different Buddhist sects. More of a religious base.
This book was great. It can enrich your knowledge about Zen and Buddhism. I recommended this book for a beginner who wants to know deep all about Zen and Buddhism
