First, some backstory on the significance of this apocryphal text. With certain stylistic cues from Lovecraft and Ballard, Jordan Krall introduced a new mythos with his enigmatic book, Beyond the Valley of the Apocalypse Donkeys from Copeland Valley Press. Certain symbols and motifs have since reoccurred with regularity throughout Krall's work. Visions of masked women torturing inquisitive young men for all eternity, hummingbirds which always herald a rupture in our perceived reality, the consumption of pancakes, American currency with tentacled or masked faces in place of presidents, dead presidents appearing as ghoulist apparitions, toad venom used as bullets, and a wide eyed giraffe on a unicycle are all calling cards of Krall's apocalypse donkey mythos.
Contained in this book are individual impressions and reactions to the mythos by authors in the Bizarro and Dynatox Ministries communities.
Personal favorites include The Sun Turned Blood Red by conspiracy researcher Randy Cunningham in which the main character survives a building collapse but is attacked by a first responder who is physically transforming into a donkey. Lincoln and Kennedy standby as impartial observers, claiming they tried to put an end to this before they were waxed.
The Watering Hole by Chris Kelso about a marketplace filled with ghastly deformities and monstrosities in jars of formaldehyde.
The Sea Valley by Rafal Kuleta where the author contemplates the origins of the otherworldly forms creeping and slithering on the ocean floor.
The Glory and the Apocalypse by Josh Myers puts the urban perversity of the glory hole in a perspective that is both evangelical and culinary as he parallels the hot and heavy activities of glory hole occupants with frying pancakes.
The Witch in the Orchard by Jonathan Moon is about a man coming into contact with one of the masked sirens who damn human beings for all of eternity by turning their reality upside down. The hummingbird also makes an appearance.
The Tape by Gabino Iglesias deals with the diehard VHS collecting community and a man who is forced to choose between a pizza box or a video cassette of The Apocalypse Donkeys film.
We have only scratched the surface of what Krall's Apocalypse Donkeys canon has to offer, but it took a lot of scratching!
