The United Nations was established on June 26, 1945. This historical document establishes and guides the workings of this international body. This is a must have for every political science and history student.
Decided to brush up on this. Memes aside, there is a lot of good will and intention here. The contemporary tension and debate since the failures to enforce peace during most of the Rwanda genocide, the Srebrenica massacre in Yugoslavia, and the resurgence of the Mali civil war, is whether or not the United Nations should have a permanent standing army rather than a at-will volunteer force, as well as the question of the national sovereignty of a state when its inhabitants suffer clear human rights abuses. There is also the debate about the permanent standing members of the Security Council and the power they wield, as one veto ultimately determines the course of action in the larger picture, since the Permanent Five are wielders of coercive power.
Its other organs, even subsidiaries of the General Assembly, have much autonomy to operate and make a variety of social, economic, and cultural studies which can be presented during sessions. But the same problem arises again when the studies find something to be erroneous happening within the state, that there is little that can be done outside of the Security Council other than sanctions and strongly written condemnations.
The charter states that all member states have the obligation to uphold the first article, which is to promote a variety of common goods. What happens when a nation, or many nations fail to do this? This is why the United Nations gets the reputation that it often receives. There is much advocacy, but its actions are questionable. No doubt that it has been able to provide a variety of good works like the Sustainable Development Goals. But it has also been observed in history to be a international organ that is very limited, and that is in part due to its very large restriction on being a pacifistic organization, having barriers in-place to do all that it can to avoid violating a states sovereignty. Even when abuses and the failure to uphold the first obligation may be clear.
